  • John Butler ‘Discovering Stillness - Part 1’ Interview by Iain McNay.
    Author of ‘Wonders Of Spiritual Unfoldment’ and Mystic Approaches.’ His loves were farming and meditation. Tells his story of spiritual unfoldment and how he discovered stillness. It was not always an easy path for him and he went through periods of depressions and hopelessness.
    ‘Realisation is not a personal attainment - it usually comes at times of deep prayer or quietness when the mind is clear of personal me…’
    ‘I’m just a quiet old man of regular habits going up and down the hill to church each day, sitting on a bench when the weather is warm. I don’t speak much. Adventures are inside.’
    ‘From worldliness the absolute completion of Pure Being can seem out of touch, more theoretical than real. How can it be relevant to need? Once known however any return to ordinary worldly ways only seem to emphasise its loss.
    Total longing brings its own reward but all feelings of achievement disappear. Incomparable gifts of Heavenly Grace instruct, inspire, save us from drowning in the world.’

    He touched on something that slapped me in the face around 10 years ago. I have always loved solitude; even as a toddler I apparently used to run away from mum and just investigate the park as if she wasn't there while she watched me. My siblings are 5+ years older than me, so I remember looking out the window watching them go off to school. It hurt a little bit to be left like that, it probably felt like being abandoned (to my little mind), but I soon learned how to entertain myself which began a lifelong habit of enjoying solitude. What hit me 10 years back when I was almost 40, was that although I was in a bustling community of people, happy, friendly, very social, because there were cliques and a lot of the interactions were somewhat superficial, I felt very, very lonely, lonely in the middle of a bustling socially active crowd.
    I realized that when I'm on my own, that gnawing sense of loneliness I felt in the crowd is completely absent. To me, being in a group of people but being unable to connect is a fate fare worse than being alone. There's contentment when I'm alone, but in that other situation there's pain and confusion.

    • @dennissmith9435
      @dennissmith9435 3 года назад +5

      Thanks for sharing. Why do you think you find solace in solitude?

    • @mikeb3315
      @mikeb3315 3 года назад +9

      No One is ever truly alone... But see it as all one. Loneliness... Or oneness... As you said, "its what my mind told me" what is the mind... The ego? The ego can't bear being "alone".
      Hope all is well.

    • @TinyMaths
      @TinyMaths 3 года назад +12

      @@dennissmith9435 I can't be exactly certain of the answer to that. I know that as a youngster I was 'forced' to be alone for long periods of time. I can also remember that in my pre-teen years, I used to feel the pain of being left at home while my older brother went out with his friends on all-day bike rides and did other stuff. I remember the pain of it. But I soon forgot about that pain and learned to entertain myself. I guess repeated responses like this were habit forming. I eventually started to engage in hobbies that require a lot of time alone to develop the skills the hobbies require. One such was learning Piano; back when i was playing, I had little trouble spending several hours a day trying to learn music. I honestly don't know the answer. I've kind of eked out an existence and really enjoy solitude nowadays. Sometimes, if I'm in a crowd for long enough, I find myself longing to get back home to myself, where I can indulge in whatever I love doing.

      "If you find an intelligent companion
      who will walk with you,

      walk with that person in joy and thoughtfulness.
      If you find no intelligent companion
      who will walk with you,
      who lives wisely and soberly,
      walk alone like a king who has renounced a conquered kingdom
      or like an elephant in the forest.
      It is better to live alone;
      there is no companionship with a fool.
      Let a person walk alone with few wishes, committing no wrong,
      like an elephant in the forest.
      Companions are pleasant when an occasion arises;
      sharing enjoyment is pleasant.
      At the hour of death it is pleasant to have done good.

His soothing voice and calm approach to his stories is like listening to your great grandfather in the living room on Christmas day. Snow falling outside, a lit pile of wood in the fireplace. What a relaxing time.

    John Butler is clearly a wonderful being who has discovered what it is to have transcended ‘the human condition.’ The pace at which he speaks and the attention he pays to everything he says is simply beautiful. The clarity and courage of his ‘delivery’ comes not from himself but from the beyond that he has realised. Love to Iain and Renate for their wonderful work❤️

    I once worked in a rather small pet zoo which for some reason had three highland cattles. In my first days I was afraid of going into their barn but it turned out for no reason because these animals were the most peaceful ones. After some while they sometimes came to me and just pushed softly their head against my chest leaving it there and it was such a beatuiful and calming experience. So I can really connect with the story of john and his little ram.
