FYI the "younger" co-author that he said he brought on board to "do the heavy lifting" on newer editions of his textbook was William Nordhaus, Nobel Laureate in Economics (2018).
I came for the ASMR aspect of this video, stayed for the asmr, but feel a new found interest in economics and knowing more about this incredibly intelligent, thoughtful and humble man 😊
"I'm not interested in mathematical economics as mathematics. I'm interested in it to only throw light on economic history. I do a lot of writing each month for newspapers all over the world and I think that a person who could write the best current accounts of current economic history would be doing the most important task of the good economist. Mathematics is just the catalyst that enables you to handle multivariate things."
My favorite part was when he mentioned that he had a lot of intercourse with the Math Department at MIT because I found that surprising. Doesn't seem like a Math Department thing.
The man charted a new and groundbreaking path for a historic institution, inspired so many great economists and had wrote countless economic think pieces and textbooks. To call him arrogant for recognising himself for doing something you could never do is ridiculous.
I studied economics in the era (the 70's) when Samuelson reigned. It was the golden age. This brought back some happy memories. Not sure why he disliked the faculty club in recent years.
I love how this video is evenly divided between the “what an ego “ people, the “ decrepit old lib tard” and finally “ love the asmr” so many people here for different reasons .
I don't get why anyone would blame him for being too proud the man has dedicated his entire life to the field and accomplished things most can only dream of. When can a man feel pride and accomplishment if not at 92 years old looking back at his life work
I think about this a lot. I think there’s potential that his mother was suffering either some PND or it’s possible that she was suffering multiple pregnancy losses and was confined to bed rest. He mentioned that “years later when he got a younger brother..” seems unusual that there would be a big gap between middle and last child unless …even only having three kids as a wealthy enough family seeks unusual … hence I think she was suffering pregnancy related illnesses maybe hypermesis and miscarriages
I think he meant two lol as far as I know he had six not nine children but still …triplets x2 … maybe some early fertility treatment like egg stimulating hormones seems pretty rare to get 2x3
To me “three triplets” sounds redundant. Is there such a thing as two triplets? When someone says they have triplets, I understand they have exactly that: 3 babies that happen to be triplets. And someone saying they have triplets should be enough to understand that. Now if they say they have 3 triplets, I’m thinking they have 9 kids: 3 sets of triplets. Same for twins. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say they have “two twins”. They have twins.
I think what St. Peter really asked him was “Why did you have such a huge ego and such an utter lack of humility for your fellow man” Then told him “Time to go back and try again buddy. This time try to have humility.”
Agreed. Even with these really clever people the world is on the edge of destruction. So yeah pal you are clever but what the fucb have you actually done to make the world better. Rhetorical question bud. You've done nothing...maybe even made it worse.
I'm guessing that being a January baby was a definite advantage in being deemed a smart kid. I don't doubt he was smart, but being older than everyone else in the class may have helped. Although, this may not apply if the year one started school was based on the school year and not the actual year one was born in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm a huge Paul Samuelson fan. What I love most about him? That he admits that "he's full of sensible heresies. ruclips.net/video/EeeasEyTZqo/видео.html
Also, even if he were literally born in January he pluralized “grades” when he mentioned that he skipped grades. Thus any advantage that he had over his peers by birth order should have disappeared.
