Without wanting to come across as giving advice - I'm really not, but I thought I'd pass something on that may change the way you view yourself. Your comment reminded me so much of me a while ago, so I hope you don't mind me passing what has been found on to you.
You can learn to understand that the mind and its thoughts are not you - because they really are not. You can accept yourself as divine grace - because you really are, even if you don't believe it yet. You can stand objectively and look at your life as it has been, with all your wrong doings and virtues along the way, and do so without guilt and without judgement, and you can practice meditation. With meditation you can see yourself, the world and your actions as an observer, and in so doing your actions change of their own accord - you don't do it. But most importantly, if you do none of those things, know you cannot become a better person no matter what you do, it is simply not possible. This is the revelation of all the things I've mentioned. You cannot become a better person because you are divine and cannot be otherwise. This misunderstanding leads to deep unhappiness and even self-destruction.
The thing that we want, we already are.

He emphasises 'There's a lot of things we can't change'etc. But not the things those prepared (to take up arms against a sea of troubles)to take the challenge CAN. If you critically examine alot if what John says it contradicts itself. He would claim otherwise but to me he seems almost fundamentalist. 'Don't criticice the higher powers that judge/punish you

Shane T I too have depression/anxiety . In some of John’s other videos and others like Ekhart Tolle, Rupert Spira etc. They describe about been willing to keep coming back to being in the “now” and it does work for me to the point where I understand the mechanism of these negative thoughts with some space between my real self ( the “you”that notices that depression is there) and these thoughts and realise that one of these thoughts holding all the others together is a “me” thought . For example- what will happen to me if I can;t pay these bills” The thought of me and what might happen to me is yet another thought but more subtle so takes an alertness to catch it in the act , but its not your real self any more than the thought of a tree is a real tree .In other words , It is seen that I am not my depression .What happens gradually is that they don’t overwelm you anymore because you realise they don;t speak the truth and you start to believe in them less and less. One thing I notice more and more about despression or anxiousness is that the theme is always about past or future. It might not happen overnight but be willing to have a go at this coming back into the present. I start by listening to sounds around , look at something in the room or things going on around you. Feel the sensation in your arms and legs , all that kind of stuff keep doing it everytime you;re aware you’re feeling depressed. Trust me it gets better even though when you;re new to it at first it can sometimes be a bit tricky till you get the hang of it because we’re so used to living in the mind and this is precisely why it works because it brings us out of the thinking level . The thoughts evaporate just like bad dreams end when you wake up , you don;t have to try and block them out, they just go by themselves. As for the bills you will be likely to deal with the real situation a lot more practically and effectively in the present with the help of a healthy mind when your emotions are no longer in the way . 😎

I'm not a Christian, but I have suffered from depression since a very young age (I'm now 30). I usually hate to hear people talk on RUclips about it because I always feel like it's not my experience so it doesn't apply. However I agree with so much John's saying. He got through his depression because he forgot about it, was distracted from it. This was the case because he remained open to new people and circumstances, did not become withdrawn and limit himself. "I can't do that, I can't go there, that won't work..." Etc. Once you open yourself up to all the world can throw at you in your short life, new opportunities and people will present themselves. I practice this every day, checking for moments of withdrawal and correcting them. Breaking the cycle. Hope you're all well x

      @OzarkoBlam Insanity?
Illness? (that one is more "trendy"/popular from what I've seen in the past too, not just in this thread)
I always call it a *symptom* or a reaction to certain realizations (unless it's truly crippling/severe, something constant or inherited, in which case I'd say meds are mandatory).
Stupidity and what's wrong in this world (stupidity's consequences, mainly) is insanity and an illness. Until we fix/tone it down, I know depression is gonna be here (well, in my case it was "mild" and it's been replaced by a constant/strong taste of anxiety, but I've always had that "spidersense" ringing in my head, that something new (or old, past mistake, like a huge war) is gonna go wrong soon, be it because of the rising levels of human stupidity/hate/immaturity/selfishness, etc. or simply because of life, since it's quite unforgiving to many of us and we're so fragile, lol... in fact, that alone, how short life is, is and would probably be enough to cause depression, even if everything wasn't so wrong and all ppl were united and truly good and logical, fair, and capable of true peace and, lastly and automatically, of evolution as well; though you'd have only one, or two, reason(s) to be depressed then😏).
I'm curious to see what others think of my description of depression. Even if I'm gonna feel disappointed. It's ok tho, I can't be more disappointed than I already am💩

@@ericatard God is there, all we have to do is go on our knees and be humble, ask Jesus to show us the truth and He will 100% show you He is there. I spent 35 years of my life believing there was nothing more than what we can see, smell and hear. Except we can only perceive a tiny amount of our surroundings. We cannot say there is no God, because we have not searched hard enough. Animals can see and smell things we cannot, that does not mean such things do not exist. It just means we are ignorant of them at this time. It is the same with the spirit. All the hard problems are in the start when we are blind and stumble. But if we have faith and pray, God will guide us and provide. Materialism and unbelief is destroying our world. Be different. I am just an insignificant farmer from Romania, in the end, what i say does not matter much. I found that some people are too proud and stubborn to even go on their knees when they are alone. Such people will never accept God, no matter how much proof one gives them. Instead they would rather believe that we come from an accident, a cosmic explosion where nothing exploded and created everything, all this beauty and order coming from something that actually defies the laws of physics. Their Big Bang is just another word for a miracle. It takes faith to be an atheist too. So why not look if there actually is a God ? You have nothing to lose, only to gain. I wish you all the best and regardless of what you will do in your life, i hope it will be a life of smiles and love.

I’ve just about come to believe he’s trying to run them out of the church by doing “construction” whenever they record. Phil actually wanted to record at a house for silence sake but we all whined till he went back to church.

I see myself a lot in Mr Butler, even though I am only 33y old. I guess when you are a seaker of the big questions of life you are bound to get some dark moments in life. This clip reminded me of a quote I read during my academic studies in religion: "For the wise man everything is suffering". It's an Indian point of view, and I see a lot of eastern philosophy in Mr Butlers reasoning.
I would also argue that the whole notion of "cheering up" that we have here in west may be a result of the growing view of the "holy self" (second wave of New Age). That the individual is central and true happiness/potential comes from yourself and not from the community/group or other outside source. It goes hand in hand with the consumer culture that forms us to find happiness if only our worldly individual needs are fufilled.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but I can’t emphasize enough how correct this approach is. Even the transitions are great. This format will get you the most views. I would say about 2/3 of your audience originate from the ASMR community, and this is perfect for that. Many of us here would have never found John without the ASMR aspect. ( We found it through ASMR, but we came back for the message. ) I hope you guys will continue to produce in this way. It’s exactly right. In case you can’t tell, I’m proud of you Phil. 😅

Well, Super Glued - I need all the encouragement I can get. So thanks for that. The new setup - much simplified - helps enormously. iPhone with Filmic Pro, Rode adaptor, 2 lav mics in. I still haven't cracked the technical side of the output from iMovie to .mov and then upload to RUclips to maintain quality - this video looks a bit 'squashed' to me. And next time I'm going to swap my mic and John's mic. John's Aputure is actually better quality but my Sony is brighter and comes across more clearly in the final edit. Don't know why.

Dear John, what you said about depression is so true, most people just don't go into it, it has its purpose for sure. State of mind like this doesn't happen for no reason. John, I truly value your experience, deeply respect your honesty about this issue. In the west people are so accustomed to word "depression" + most people I've met in the US were on antidepressants and it seemed very normal for them. I was deeply surprised when I found out. As for me, I grew up not knowing such words: stress or psycho-somatic disorders or depression. Yes, lucky I was...Recently, I've been listening to all kind of specialist talking about depression referring not only to biochemical dis-balance of hormones, but also as a fundamental conflict, a state of soul of the human being that happens for reason. Thank you and Phil for recording this video. John's direct experience, his exploration of it and true knowledge from going thought it fully is needed and appreciated.

When I saw the title, I was frankly quite taken aback at how, for lack of a better word, insensitive it seemed, however after watching, I realized that this perspective of depression is one that in my life I hadn't before considered. Despite me being Agnostic, your words reached me and resonate with me, and has given me a refreshing look on my past and how to think of it, and therefore better my present life. What a wonderful person. He really make me smile when he laugh. I don't know why but he brings me peace, someone said to me once that i have an old soul. As a kid i had really deep questions and interests. More mature? I don't know. I suffer alot of pain (more mental than physical) all that pain only give more knowledge. Im still not in peace with my inner thoughts. I need to let go so much anger. I know im in the correct path... i love to see the little details of life, the smells, the distant sounds, stars in an open night sky. I think we are going to fast in modern days. We need to go slower, this is not a race. Im going to embrace my life as much independent and self-sufficient as i can. Repurposing objets, taking care of others, helping as much as i can. One great lessons i learned is that we live through others. Helping them help us. That grow your heart strong. We need to live just with the basic so we can experience spiritual growth. Cheers from Argentina.

I don't know if you'll ever see this, John, being so old a video. It has truly been inspiring and given me hope. For years in my teens and twenties I was depressed and suicidal. Having finally come out of it through a lot of hard work, I got a job and felt I was finally "going somewhere". Then the pandemic hit and I now suffer from long-covid, having been extremely ill and unable to work for several years now. I'm slowly building strength and adjusting to my new norm, and I feel so defeated. So many things I wanted to do are not physically possible anymore. I look at school and other such things and, in my mid-thirties, feel so far behind. Feel so hopeless. So thank you for sharing your story here. I needed to hear it.

I appreciate that you bring a Russian perspective into some of your talks, not out of. some silly sense of national or cultural pride but because it contains, and even embraces the reality of suffering, of depression, of the pain of living not as aberrations but as deep soul lessons, as urgings to deeper seeking, deeper growth, something, in the end, to be grateful for. Hearing you remind me of that, I am so very thankful. God bless you and keep you.

I was reassured by a friend who told me that depressed people have more accurate perceptions than happy people! That happy people are actually overly optimistic, and perhaps even deluded! The problem we're confronted with when dealing with a persistent case of depression is the loss of our relationships. Misery loves company, but most people avoid it.

@I M D Ltd...nope...glad i do not subscribe to that view. It seems rather backwards....some truth, but ultimately not accurate, IMHO. THANKS.

"at last I am in a world where everyone is as miserable and depressed as me" actually made me laugh out! I've never been to Russia but I now feel like I completely understand the place

@Lloyd Christmas he writes books as well...im PRETTY sure he's up front about everything he experiences and wants to share. He MAY drag it out a bit in his videos just because he's been made aware of his asmr like effects on people that click them. But he isnt trying to BS anyone.

John brings you back down to earth, makes you consider what is important. Quiet reflection. Its needed more than ever in this day and age, with all the advertising, social media bullshit. We all need this.
