How to make realistic Cranefly / Daddy long legs bodies with Barry Ord Clarke

- This is a great little technique for making very realistic cranefly / Daddy long legs bodies. For just a few Euro you can get one of these simple extended body tools (link below) and with the material from just one vinyl glove make hundreds of bodies. It takes a little practice, but once mastered you will be churning them out. When made correctly, they are filled with air and float like a cork.

Takker!
Very cool tricks, and super realistic Barry. The technique used to make that body is very inventive. This is the kind of stuff that I think makes the art of flyting so interesting and addictive.
You are so right, thank you.

Beautiful Barry. I can see this technique for Damsel Flies too, just a different colour marker.
Absolutely, but I have a technique for damsel bodies that is much quicker. ruclips.net/video/LUD7osSrw50/видео.html
that is a very life like fly very good
Thanks Steven.
NICE
Thank you.
Дуже гарно.
Thanks.
Thanks for sharing this pattern!
I was excited to try tying one of these but didn't want to have to wait for a tool to arrive in the mail. I remembered I have a box of flat toothpicks, took one and cut a slit one end with an X-acto blade. My biggest concern was the finished body wouldn't slide off the toothpick but I had to problem. It fits in my vise after snipping off an eighth inch from the tapered end making it easy to work with. This also helps with heating the body up with the flame. My vise spins so it's like a rotisserie
Hi Mickey, thanks. The tool has a special finish on the surface of the needle, this makes removing the finished body easy. You can try applying a tiny amount of Vaseline to the tip of your toothpick before you wrap the body strip, this also makes it easier on the tool.
I'm giving this beauty a go, my pack of 100 vinyl gloves just arrived in the post, i think I should have enough material....lol Once again Barry you make it look easy! but I'm sure it isn't.
Thanks Timmy, good luck with it.
@@Thefeatherbender I really struggled with the knots in the legs, old hands don’t help. I’ve tied two flies so far. I’m off to fish the River Tees for the next 10 days, hopefully I’ll be able to give them a go. I’ll let you know if I have any luck. Best Regards Timmy
That is just SO good. A new best in show of daddy bodies. I'm on it. I'd be interested to see your take on Robjent's daddy. It doesn't 'arf rise a lot of fish.
Thanks John, I don't know that pattern!
@@Thefeatherbender Barry, it's the slightly peculiar-looking version tied by (and for) Alastair Robjent, that he sells in his Stockbridge shop. It's a noted killer, and he sells hundreds. I'll get a photograph of it to you via the SIG. Of course, it's either a noted killer because it's brilliant, or because he sells so many that it's the daddy so many anglers have in their boxes. It floats with the legs UNDER the body in the surface film.
Will have to find a way to get/ make the slotted tool
Hi Bruce, they are very difficult to make but you can find the link in the video description.
Berry, I am always impressed with your care to making it look real with available materials. Fragility would be my only concern here similarly with the wally wings your so good at. Some flys don't look so realistic in detail but are very durable, and catch fish again and again. I fished all evening with a stimulator pattern catching dozens of fish (released), and the fly kept on ticking. But, I really am going to give these a shot and let you know if my fears are correct.
Thanks for all you show.. Danny
Hi Danny, I know what you mean, but these bodies are almost indestructible if made correctly and will outlive the hook. Please do let me know how you get on with them.
Какая прелесть!!👍👍
Thanks
Do you have a materials list?
Absolutely amazing. Where could I purchase a tool like this would do may flys also
Thanks Maz, you can get them both here: www.54deanstreet.it/shop/category/vises-tools-54-dean-street-tools-285
Nice tip Sir ! Very cool
Glad you liked it Chris!
That’s smashing Barry, I’m doing some! Thanks. What scissors do you use? They look very fine tipped…? Cheers again
Thanks. Yes they are, they are from the Italian company called Kopter.
Hi, Can you still buy the body making tool. I have been looking everywhere for one. Thanks
Hi Paul yes, from 54 Dean Street.
Was expecting that one to fly off when you opened the vice. Very nice tie. When you rolled the glove strip , did you start with thick or thin end in the slotted tool?
Thanks B, yes the thick end first in the tool.
Hi Barry, love this. Just wondering... You mention marking the thicker end of the vinyl strip... But which end do you put into the slot of the tool, thin or thick?
You start with the thin side of the Vinyl.
Hi Barre have you attempted to use the smaller version of this tool for a mayfly body? I'm playing with it now and wondering if you have any insight into attaching mayfly tails?
Hi Lucas, I use the Mayfly body tool for the mayflies, I'll be making a video soon...
Magnificent daddy long legs pattern, where can I purchase the detached body tool please ?
Thanks, in the link to 54 Dean Street.
I ordered the tool from the video and it’s much thinner than the one your using.
Hi Paul, I can't understand that, they are all made by the same man. Mine is 1.5 mm wire.
Beautiful work what hook are you using
Mastad Heritage C49SAP # 10
@@Thefeatherbender thank you
Is there any place else that sells the body tool other then 54 Dean Street? I’ve been trying for what seems like forever to get this. 54 Dean Street fly tying tools does not have them and there is no expected time for them to restock.
Sorry I don't know anyone else that stocks them.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!
Very realistic but how durable would they be when fished, is it worth the effort?
Hi Scott, they are almost indestructible ! and thats no lie, you can't pull them apart with your fingers, so they will last longer than the hook.
@@Thefeatherbender having now watched the tying sequence l have to agree, lovely tying!
@@Thefeatherbender so when you fish them do you trim the underside hackle fibres to avoid them riding too high on the surface?
@@scottgillies5779 I'm also curious about this one 🙂
why 2 hackles?
More the merrier ! I wan't a lot of disturbance in this pattern when its on the water.
Very nice. I missed how you made the legs. Is there another way I can see the legs? Tight lines 🐜🕷️🐛🦟!!!!!
Hi I have two videos showing different techniques for the legs. ruclips.net/video/rYWSCEGepIs/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/EDZ6xZ6ogoQ/видео.html
Is it possible to make spider legs this way also?
Yes!@@robertperman8967
