Tying an Extended Body Ephemera Danica

  • Forgive the slightly croaky voice - I’m just getting over a (non-covid) sore throat.
This is a cracking pattern to represent E. danica and the other big mayflies. Tying these long-bodied flies on a long shank hook is one option, but this gives a very straight (and very heavy) fly that doesn’t look quite right in my eyes.
This technique for extended bodies is very similar to how I tied the damselfly in my previous upload, but using moose and elk to create a banded mayfly body with loads of floatation power.
Top it off with some Wally wings and a big bushy hackle, and this is an easy to tie but very effective mayfly.

great fly, I'll be tying up a good deal of them.thanks ,Only I do not use wet fly hooks on dry flies. I will use a Ahrex super dry fly hook size 12. It's a wide gap hook that's very strong.

It’s the Petitjean one - by far my favourite that I’ve used so far, but much better for small flies than large as the reach is quite limited

Excellent. Thank you. A close cousin to Barry Ord Clark's version. Alas, that high quality elk is difficult to find in the UK. I love the look of Wally wings, but find they twist the leader somewhat; so I replace with Aero Wing or deer hair - not as pretty, but practical, and very floaty.

Great fly and excellent demo of the techniques. Does all bull elk come with that length of fibres. I'm UK based so interested in where you purchased your patch of hair.

Have you ever used the curved upholsterers needle for this? Hey if you ever want some good bull elk let me know I will send you some gratis. The hair you folks get there is not so good, not sure why.
Wally is a friend of mine. I always share videos using his wing. I don't think he knows how extensively his wings are used. Even in Malaysia.
Again you have a very good presentation! I hope your Channel grows accordingly!

Looks good, might give it a try but definitely have to compromise on materials!
P.s. can’t get away with ‘wraps’ and ‘head cement’, are you in the US? That would explain the materials 😄
