THANK YOU for the link to get the foam cutters !!!! My link to get mine is hopefully on the way right now. This is what I love about you, total professionalism, you list ALL the materials and hardware and actually SHOW IT to TOTALLY be helpful to the tier and give EVERY tip you possibly can in material manipulation. These videos are like a college course from a Cambridge level instructor, EVERY one, and I mean EVERY SINGLE ONE is the best I have ever seen, these are SO helpful on SO many levels !!!!

Great looking Daddy Davie. I've seen a diy of making plug cutters in Fly Tyer magazine, the hardest part is grinding out the the channel on the side for plug removal. Lots of diy using retractable antennas for making cutters too. Bass Pro shop used to sell them for cutting out plugs on plastic grubs and minnows to insert rattles. Thanks for another great tutorial Davie, they always contain tips on technique and materials in every step. 👍 All the very best to you!

Nice tie Davie!! For making foam cylinders I just purchased ($6 Cdn at the local Hardware store) a "Mop" style duster that has a telescoping handle made from thin-walled stainless steel tubes. Dis-assembly yielded five 5 inch tubes ranging in size from .220" to .375" ID - perfect for bobbie-eyes and foam bodies - and enough "mops" to make a couple of dozen flies. ATB! Hank

Great fly Davie.. I have caught 4 grilse on this pattern this year and sea trout up to 3.5 lbs this year. It even works in salt and brackish water.

I use something similar to these cutters that you have. I made my own out of steel Brake Line. 3/16,1/4,5/16, and 3/8, and then Sharpened the one end. Once cut I use the next size down to push the foam back out. They fit well inside of the larger sizes.

I've recently been looking for the tools to cut these foam tubes and found Gunville foam cutters which look exactly like these but are sold in the UK. Got a set and they're brilliant. Just thought I'd mention in case anyone else is hunting for the tools.

In Montana over here in the States, particularly in the Beaverhead River they fish a cranefly pattern by skittering it along the top. It's very primitive compared to this one you've tied Davie and I think yours would be much more effective by making more of a wake plus it looks like the real deal. I'm going to give it a go.

      Hi Kerry,
I've not tyed a dapping fly in a very long time so I would say that it's not a very popular way to fish as it once was even though you can have some great fun dapping as I have done it in the past..

I don't know why this was in my feed. I know nothing about fishing or whatever this man is doing.. but this is incredible 😆 this is art! And very relaxing voice, could watch this all day. Great work sir!
Excuse my ignorance but does anyone know why they are made so accurately? Can a fish tell the difference?

    • @rlwkirsch

The debate between advocates of matching the appearance of the bugs as closely as possible and advocates of flies that give the impression of food is endless. Personally I feel that the only thing a trout has to decide is 'stick or not stick" and 90% of what they eat is dark colored, fuzzy, and just under an inch long. Davie ties both types of flies and is one of the true masters of the art. Enjoy watching. Think about whether or not you want to try throwing something like that at a fish. It's a great sport/hobby/addiction.

It's one of the patterns I tied for them many years ago when they supplied Sportfish and they have continued to make them as they have been so popular, I also did a mayfly version as well...They are going to be tying them in smaller sizes next year as well as they work just as well..I will be filming one of them for over the winter months to help promote them...
