I've been looking for a smaller terrestrial for late summer and up popped this video.

You sir are an absolute joy to watch! A wonderful pattern, I learn a great deal from watching you! Thank you sir!
Great looking fly, and once again great tying from you as always. I will be tying some of these for sure . Thanks again
Davie, I've been watching you channel ever since I started tying and am continually impressed by you artistry.
I'm a doctor that love tying in free times. This days in particular, tying help me to take a rest, dreaming about what will I hope to fish when this nightmare finish. So thank you, because you help us to dream in the future. Blessings from Uruguay.
Hi Rafael.
If my videos help you in anyway to relax and look forward to getting out on the water casting your flies away from what happening at the moment makes me feel very useful though nothing in comparison to the job you and your colleagues are doing..If I can help you more then please let me know..Please stay safe and everyone is wishing you and everyone well..
All the very best Davie...
@@DavieMcPhail Your welcome. You use to give as a present your knowledge. To give your time to all of us is a beautiful way to show love to the other around the world. And that's s amazing.
I think that's the best pattern I've seen for a foam black ant
Nicely done , ants are one of my favorites to fish here on the Madison in the summer . Thanks for sharing.
Awesome ant fly! I'll be tying a few for my upcoming trip. Your videos are always great. Thanks!
Very nice. This will be one I have to have in my fly box. Tight lines🐜🦟🪰!!!!!
Nice work. I appreciate your attention to detail.
Once again you’ve taken an old favourite and improved it to a work of art.
"Ant" that a beauty! I have been enjoying your videos for years now Davie, best wishes from NY to you and everyone, everyone please stay safe and take care of yourselves and each other.
Yes,Davie is quite something. The accuracy and harmony of his flies is awesome. Enjoy your vids every time. And your Scottish accent !!! So welcome vids in this dark days in Spain, when confinement keeps us away from our beloved rivers.
Watching your videos has definitely helped me become much better at tying and finishing fly's. Thank you
Cheers Davie. I’m actually getting better tying flies thanks to your tutorial’s.
Thank you so much for sharing. In these days of uncertainty here in 🇨🇭 I’ll take advantage of the situation and spend time on tying your patterns. Stay safe everyone.
Excellent video Davie, must try some of these.
Just like to say thank you. These days are tough with that virus snd watching you vidz brings me joy!

All the very best Davie
As always, another great video, you never fail to inspire me, thanks again for another cracking dressing. ATB Jimf
Thanks for the advice re foam on the shank....6:00pm here in Australia !
As usual a great pattern Davie
thx for sharing
Brilliant Davie, thanks
Great ant pattern mate. The bluegill and crappies would modern that puppy. Thanks for sharing another great video with us all. Best Regards, Ken
Thanks for the content during these hard times
The man who taught me to tie many years ago had a beetle pattern similar to this. It had a rabbit body and palmered hackle legs trimmed on top and bottom . It caught me quite a few fish when beetles were about. He had a Japanese beetle pattern that used pheasant body feather covered with ambroid cement but it was never as effective as the black one. Stay healthy and thanks
Very awesome patern for sure and the fish love them
Thank you for the great vids i have been following you for many years you have helped me tremendously with my tying smaller flys normally I typically do big streamers but i do fish trout lakes have cought many on your patterns this is a great one for panfish in mn in the us. Cheers thanks again
I have to be honest Davie and say I don’t normally like foam or synthetic materials but this one does give me inspiration. Maybe I’ll give it a try. Thanks for another one dude.
Gracias Davie por compartir.
Bonito montaje, te lo copiaré para mis queridos barbos gitanos.
Cracking little fly. Well done Davie
Quality workmanship
Nice job Dave awesome 🐜
Very nice Davie, you are the better.
how easy you make it seem!!! Looks perfect!!! Thanks for sharing!
Very nice Davie! Ants must taste good to the fish as it seems that they are always "on the menu". ATB!
Прекрасная работа ! Браво !
Nice fly.your a good fly tyer. I tie a few of yours .works great
Like that Davie, great use of the Deer Hair.
Looks amazing
Amazing Brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!👍👍👍
Love it! Thanks Davie, I've been a fan of yours for many years. You make it all look so easy. Tying some up for my trip into the Bob Marshall!
Thanks for the video!
Looks to be a very convincing pattern. Thank you again for the tie!
Love all your videos. Thanks for keeping them going.
very nice ant gotta give that a try really need to make more topwater flies that float without addons the foam will do
Thanks Davie, wonderful thread control and a great pattern.
That is a great ant pattern. Like this a lot.
Wow nice or what Kudos Davie wishing you the best my friend
your welcome
Davy I’ve been making them for a while, using Oliver Edwards method and at first I thought you were copying that, but yours is unique to me and one I’ll definitely try. Love the head idea. Thanks.
Great! I'll try in a #12 hook size for "tilapia rendalli"
Very nice !👏
Lovely
Genius your a fly tying genius.
*you’re
Another great one. Maybe the tight wad in me will finally use those wee feathers that I save for the little spiders I never tie. Davie, In all these years I can't remember you tying a parachute. I know you fish a lot of dries. Do you prefer CDC even in fast water. Cheers and stay safe. Thanks for sharing your skills
Hi Possum King Productions,
I do tye many parachute flies and I've even tyed a parachute version of this ant as well...It may be a few months since I filmed a parachute fly so I'll see what I can do as I do love tying and fishing them..I also like the CDC flies and If I had to be honest they are the most popular and asked for dries..Stay safe and thank again for all the kind words..
All the very best Davie...
beautiful
I enjoyed the excellent video but could hardly believe the trash words the closed captions displayed. Too funny!
You should do a tying video of a skykomish sunrise. Theres only a couple videos up on how to make one and I feel if you make a video of it, it will be 10 times better than any of the others!
Hi Jesse G,
I've never tyed a Skykomish Sunrise so it would certainly be worth looking at, if you have a link to the dressing and the way you would like to see it tyed including the size then please send it to me..
All the very best Davie..
@@DavieMcPhail its primarily a steelhead pattern but I've seen some people tie it into a heron spey pattern like this:www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?/topic/6020-skykomish-sunrise-heron/
But this is the original pattern: www.frankenfly.com/skykomish-sunrise/
I would love to see it done in a heron spey pattern but you can do it the way that you would prefer. I was unable to get a dressing for the spey version but I would like to see it similar in hook size are some of your spey patterns. Kind of like your orange heron pattern. Here it the info for the original pattern:
HOOK: 7999, sizes 2-8
THREAD: Red
TAG: Flat silver tinsel
TAIL: Red and yellow hackle fibers, mixed
RIB: Oval silver tinsel
BODY: Red chenille. Angora goat dubbing may be substituted.
HACKLE: One red hackle and one yellow hackle, wound together
WING: White calftail
CHEEKS (OPTIONAL): Jungle cock.
Hope you can work your magic my friend!
Thanks again!
I want to adopt one like it for Lambari fishing but I'm going for legs
Great Looking Ant pattern and simple too. I've got to tie some of those today. I live in South Alabama, we don't have Trout, but I'll bet a Bull Bluegill cannot resist that Little Fly. Thanks for sharing that pattern with us !!!.. Keep those Great Videos coming !!!!
P.S. Do you know a good Spider Pattern?? If so, please share it with us too.
Hi Mike,
I don't think I have ever tyed an actual spider pattern though I have seen one or two patterns in the past so I may have a look for one...I'm glad you liked the ant, it is a simple fly the ones I like most..
All the very best Davie...
Get looking fly
In all the ants,I remember that the red ones are hard for the body, I remember when was young, that it is a ants who turn whit the teers on the skin. AIEEEeeeeeee....🐜 🦷 CONTINUE YOUR GREAT FLYS, BEAU.....
Супер работа!
When nothing else is working put on a black ant.
Another great "bread&butter" fly from master Davie. Straight to favourites. I use them from August to mid September, on really hot, sunny days, with amazing results, caught my biggest trout using one of these. Have to say, the smaller sizes - #16, #18 are trickier to tie.
Thank you sir for a great video!
P. S. What vise are you using?
Alex
Davie, I hope you and your family are all doing well and healthy. I love this particular pattern style, but one of the little ‘add-ons’ I put on mine is a small hot spot on the shank behind the butt end covered with resin. Seems to add a bit more to the patterns effectiveness. Lastly, I must ask this question...I have spoken with you numerous time and you already know how I feel about your fly tying skills...but why Uni Thread?
Hi Fly Tyer,
We are all well thank you and I hope you and your family are safe too, thank you for asking..I have used uni-thread for a long time and just got used to it and it's in all the shops...It also comes in the 200m spools rather than 100m which you find with other brands so it lasts far longer..Thank you for the kind words again..
All the very best Davie..
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Davie... love the vids, can you please confirm what make of fly tying vice you are using
Hi Stephen,
I use a law vice but unfortunately it's no longer being made, I did make a video of the vice so I have attached a link to it for you to see...ruclips.net/video/3P6MZIrpGG0/видео.html
All the very best Davie..
Very effective fly at one time. Thanks
Классная мушка!!!
🇨🇿CZ. 👀👍🏻 super 👍🏻👋🏻
Still can’t twist the dubbing around the thread… can you guide me on that?
Hi David,
I have attached a link to a video I made on mixing dubbing which I always like to do with my dubbings as this will help you when you go to twist it around the thread. I will look at making another video on this as it's an old video and the footage it not as good as it is today..

Ant 🐜🐜
Could ypu use peacock dubbing if you dont have black glister??
Hi @scottingram6022,
Yes peacock dubbing would be ideal for tying an ant and so would the natural peacock herl which I have done many times..
All the very best Davie..
is there any tips to what kind of thread to use for foam? the ones im using slips and twists so much its very frustrating would flexible thread work for that?
Morning Raffael,
I use Uni-Thread for almost all my flies but what I do is wax the thread a little to help give it a bit more grip, you could also spin your bobbin to tighten the thread to stop it going flat which will help to give you a little more grip..
I hope this helps you..
All the very best Davie..
@@DavieMcPhail makes sense, ill give those a go thank you!
Super nice ant, unfortunately I'm a beginner and this is still too hard for me.
SUPER!!!
Классная мушка👍👍👍
Superbe 🙏
Does anyone make a cutting tool that can be adjusted to make consistent 2-4 mm strips. I gave away my paper cutter. Stupid move.
Any tips for stopping foam bodies rolling over shank?
Morning Glenn,
Just make sure you have a layer of thread down first and that it's nice a tight using a little fly tyers or cobblers wax to help hold the foam and thread turns as well..Also try and reduce the foam to a taper or slightly stretch it so that it's not to bulky as tying to put too much on can do this...I find one of the best foams to use is the one from Veniards, I have attached a link to it for you to see.

I hope this helps you...

Hey there! What vise do you use? Great fly pattern! I’ll be tying some up.
Hi Dang it Dee,
I use a Law vice but unfortunately it's no longer being made, I have made a video on it which I have attached a link to for you to see...

👍👍👍 Привет из России!
muy guapa
SA-WEET!! Enough said.
This is a "tanajura" in Brasil. good and reality
yellow it would pass as a wasp
Would you help my start up with suggestion of the number hook you use? Seems my #12 is too long in the shank. Thanks for the beauty of your tying skills!
Hi Robin,
I've tied this pattern on size 10s down to size 16s and I like the Fulling Mill All-Purpose Medium and also the Kamasan B175 which is a standard style of hook and suits many flies..Merry Christmas...
All the very best Davie..
👍🏻🐜🔥
What camera are you using?
Hi hawksmut, I use a Sony AX100e with a 2+filter screwed to the lens to get the closeup of the fly...
