I agree, did very well with this in 16 for Brook Trout in spring creeks, also used a shakable top ride floatant by Loon for the first time. The combo made the fly very realistic and a killer for the surface.
This has become one my favorite patterns to both fish and tye to represent any olive on my local waters. This pattern is perfect in my book!
A very nice and easy to follow instructions. Thank you Davie for keeping me motivated
Great fly, Davie !
Good looking Fly Davie, thanks for sharing that pattern with us.
Another wonderfully simple pattern that catches fish. I've learned so much as a tier from McPhail.
I see Davie's devoted are all watching this morning... enjoyed the video mate!
I just found your channel. Absolutely great instructional. You are like the Bob Ross of fly tying. Can't wait to tie some of your patterns and see how they work in local stream. Cheers
Excellent video Davie.
Great looking fly,l will try and make it, hope it looks as good as yours. Thanks for all your great videos, just can't stop watching them.
A very nice variation. As usual you demonstrate the most refined technique and a fantastic end result. Thank you.
Un montage simple et efficace pour la prochaine saison ! Merci pour le partage de votre "savoir faire"
Simple and efficient assembly for the next season ! Thank you for sharing your "know-how"
Great looking comparadun mate. That would be a good little dry for brookies. Thanks for sharing another great pattern to have in your box. Best Regards, Ken
Another great tying of a dry fly

I'll be tying a handful of them for certain
Thanks Davie
Loved the lesson, winter tying this fly for me next season. Thanks Davie. Big Davie
Nice fly.TanksDavie👍
I tied 6 in a couple of sizes and Landlocked Salmon ate them like candy!! They held up through some rough fights. Great fly!
Thanks again Davie
Another beauty Davie, that'll fish really well on my local water, the Tyne in East Lothian👍 still can't get the hang of breaking off the deer hair though🤣
I like it, you tie your beautyful flies on barbless hooks.
Beautiful
Good job! Hello my Friend! Super Like 👍
Top notch
I tied up some of Davie's BWOs and fished them here on a very pressured stream, right above a busy bridge and they were automatic.
Pretty flies.. Je vais même essayé sur la March brown
СУПЕР!!!! БОЛЬШОЕ СПАСИБО ЗА ТРУД!!!. ИЗ РОССИИ С УВАЖЕНИЕМ!)))))
👍👍
Hope your ok Davie!!
👍👍👍Замечательно!!
🇨🇿CZ. 👀👍🏻 TOP 👍🏻🍻👋🏻
Fantastic Video as always Davie, my tying is going fantastically now amd I really have a good rhythm with it now. Sadly my father died last year and he was a massive part of fishing for me so I sold my vice, rods the lot..
Happy to say I have a tying table again now and have in the last few weeks started tying again. Ive had to tie everything from scratch so Ive tied a few hundred over the last week or so to get a good box together.........
Anyway I digress,..... Could I use a grey CDC and olive seals fur blend for body and then use a grey feather for the wing.. I don't have any olive cdc amd I doubt the died grey ones I have will dye well olive lol. I have dyes I just have yet to buy a bulk pack of CDC.
(Just finished tying a cross between an olive bumble and a pearly palmer on a size ten, used a white/grey partidge and a died hot orange Partridge as the front hackles.. Was alot fun. Thanks fpr teaching me Davie)
What is traditional attire for fly fishing? Would a kilt be frowned upon? I'm a quarter Buchanan. My grandmother was the first of her family born here in the US. Just wondering. I recently taught my dad how to fly fish. Thought it would be neat to do it the way they used to back in the old days. My great grandfather fought WWI in a kilt. He was a Highlander brigade soldier (I forget the actual unit name) and he got sent home after he and like 7 others survived a gas attack out of stone 300+ men. His uniform was crazy by today's standards and I mean that in the coolest way.
Nice pattern -is the thorax too bulky if you bring both cdc feathers to the front? Do you dress this with standard floatant ? Thanks for your videos Davie
Maravilha Maravilha beleza pura jovem fica com deus
Amazing as always, do you apply floatant when using this fly? THANKS
Hi LarryW,
I do apply a floatant as it will float far longer and catch more fish before you have to change it.....I'm glad you enjoyed the video...
All the very best Davie
Hi Davie, superb pattern. If I wanted to add a trailing shuck to your pattern, what product would you recommend? Many thanks
Hi John,
An antron or poly-yarn would be ideal for the trailing shuck as I've used them on a few patterns over the years..I'm glad you liked the fly..
All the very best Davie
Davie, As always enjoy your videos as I've been doing for many years. Question: As you know, typically when using a CDC feather for the body, Marc Petitjean will twist the CDC as he wraps in around the hook. That technique provides a tapered effect, but results in a bit larger diameter profile than the technique you used in this video of wrapping the CDC flat, without twisting it. Do you prefer this technique when using CDC as a body on dry flies?
Again, thank you.
Cheers,
Bryan
Hi Bryan,
I do like and use Marc's method as well though the way I used it will give you a finer body especially on the smaller size dry flies.. Some cdc feathers can be quite sparse in fibre and twisting it will help you get a better body unlike the feathers I used in the video that have a lot of fibre so I have to watch that I didn't tye in too much..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the kind words...

@@DavieMcPhail Davie, Thank you for the explanation. Understood. Cheers,
Morning Davie, hope to see some. More vids soon, just tied the most ridiculous fly to float buzzers under, a bit like a dragon fly I gueds, hahhaa Ive named it as Im sure its never been tied before 😂😂😂. Ive uploaded a video, no ones interested in my flys except me so may aswell share with you sir 😊
what do you suggest for winter flies? Ilike to keep fishing into Feburary and am at a quandary as to what to use
Can’t believe he Left that long piece from the wing he usually pulls all the loose ends of.
deee jaaay even the best miss things mate🙄 👍🏻
Really nice pattern. Thanks for sharing. Can you give me some tips on bleaching and dying moose hairs?
Hi Jeff,
Unfortunately I only once had a go at bleaching and made a complete mess of it so I've never tried to do again...If you can find some already bleached then buy it as you will save money..I'm glad you liked the fly..
All the very best Davie
Brilliant Davie. I know you're concerned about ads in your videos. One to start and one to finish seems fair, but were FOUR in this one, including two in mid tie. We're all grateful for your work, but four ads is so distracting. Are there pressures from Fulling Mill?
Hi Duofold,
I have always blocked the extra adds that they want to put on as I hate them myself especially the ones in the middle.. I just checked and it seems they have changed things so that when they are over a certain length they automatically put the adds in to run in the middle so I have now went back and took these out for the last 6 or more and then I'll look at checking the others for this year to see what settings they are at..It's nothing to do with Fulling Mill as it's a banner I add to the video myself when editing and it's RUclips that controls the default settings for the adds so I'll need now to keep an eye on them...Thanks for letting me know and if you see a video with too many adds let me know and I'll change the settings..
All the very best Davie..
Thanks for video. Can u recommend a substitute for coq de leon
Hi snapsnap1,
I am as happy using cock hackle fibres as much as the coq de Leon as this is what I used mostly over the years, the coq de Leon does last a tad longer but I don't mind...I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the kind words..
All the very best Davie..
Wow.... video europea hold fly possibility ? Dry fly. Luigino from Italy.
Nice. What vice are you tying on?
Hi SuperDrunkBird,
I get asked a lot about the vice I use so I made a video on it as unfortunately it is no longer being made, it's called a Law named after the gentleman that made it Lawrence A Waldron..I'm glad you liked the fly and I have attached a link to the video for you to see

thanks Davie!
Beautiful fly and I appreciate all of the instruction but I've always wondered what vice you're using. I have plenty of flies for fishing but I'm thinking about getting into this side of the hobby. I'm having a problem choosing my first vice because there are so many out there. Thanks!
Hi Dragon-Wolf,
Unfortunately the vice I use is no longer being made, it is called a law vice named after the gentleman that made it...I have attached a link to a video I made showing it as I do get many questions about it..There are lots of vices out there as you said and it can be hard to pick one. One of the best ways to help you make your choice is to go along to a flyfair / show and look at the vices being used by the many tyers and you'll see the one that suits the flies you tye..Unfortunately until this virus gets under control I can't see one for a while..
All the very best Davie..

@@DavieMcPhail Thank you for the quick reply. I researched it and found out that those are going for thousands of dollars on E-Bay now. I'm reluctant to spend hundreds of dollars on a first vice, never mind thousands. I'll continue my search. Take care . . . John

What type of wax are you using here?
Hi Mister Carpenter,
I use Veniards prepared fly tyers, I have attached a link to a video I made on the wax and how I use it for you to see..
