Very informative strip down. I've never seen such depth of disassembly in such detail before on a Stihl chainsaw. Thanks for sharing.
Sure thing, anytime!
My dad's Super 29 quit running 2 years ago.
I am DAMN determined to rebuild it.
DO IT!
Always clean the tapered area of the crank and the matching surface of the flywheel with break cleaner or carb cleaner before installing the flywheel on the crank, otherwise you can smoke the flywheel key, regardless how tight you put on the flywheel not, especially on a saw that you replaced the seals. I doubly clean them before I put on the flywheel.
I would replace the bearings if I had gone that far- 6203C3. They are pretty cheap, but not from Stihl. A boot for my 260 cost $45 and seals for my ms 250 cost about the same.
I rebuilt an 029 a few years ago. Put new bearings, seals, and a cylinder kit in it. It ran fine, afterwards. I completely disassembled it and cleaned every part. The worst part was getting the rear bar lug out, because Stihl uses a permanent green Locktite on it. You usually ruin the rear bar nut getting it out. Heat helps. You cannot replace the bearings and seals without removing the rear bar stud. I screws into the crankcase. I used vicegrips and heat to remove it, plus a little heat on the stud. I will never rebuild another 029, Ms 290 or 291 - just to much work.
The fuel didn’t look like it had oil in it.
Wouldn't surprise me, I almost always put fresh 91 w/oil.
Great video
Thanks!
Looks like straight gas no oil mix😮
The rear bar stud is screwed into the crankcase of the 029 and is a bitch to get out. It is coated with green Locktite. I sometimes have had to use heat on it to get it out. One time I even welded the nut on to the bar stud and used an air impact to remove it.
You got that right!
Save that elbow on the oil pump, because you have to put it back on the new oil pump.
Wowww. That's amazing!
Thanks a lot bro!
I hate working on the 029 series of Stihl saws.
The piston rings aren’t gone, they have aluminum up from the cylinder smeared over them. That’s why they call then Jesus clips, because where in the Jesus did they go. I can’t tell you how many that I have lost. I usually get an extra on to use if I loose it getting it off or putting it back on. I loose one about 50% of the time.😛
Spray dow dirty plastic parts with Super Clean and pressure wash it.
Damn!!! that saw had a hard life "/
It is my policy to replace all rubber parts on a saw that I restore, including fuel line, impulse line, oil lines and intake boot, plus any gaskets as needed. This eliminates future problems. I sure do not like having to tear down a saw, again, because i short circuited a few items.
I have sthill 039 it's very strong although she is old.
They don't make them like they used to!
I have the same saw mine runs fine but missing the stub hose on the top left side of the fuel tank believe it’s a vent hose
Yep your correct. Its a hose with tank vents inserted on either side.
Is there a decompression valve that n the 029?
Nope, all compression.
Rubbing on case. My guess is bad bearings.
Use a ratchet instead of impact to break free less chance of stripping thanks for the video
wow you should be teaching in school for new mechanics coming in trade.
Love to help.
Apanya yang di ganti kawan ?
No sure what your asking?
He said what’s replaced friend
Looks to be informative so thanks for contributing. You may want to be a little more professional without the potty mouth though.
