Hi Friends! Thank you SO much for stopping in for a look! I appreciate all of you! If you haven't subscribed, please do! Soon, I will be announcing a giveaway prize for when we reach 20,000 subscribers! Who want's a FREE Saw? For your Stihl MS170 side tensioner - order part number 1123 007 1000 from your Stihl dealer. They are around $25.00 in CAD pricing. I can't wait to see you all next video!
Looks like it wasn’t the bar holder that was the problem but the chainsaw holder😂 thanks for the peep into you n your hubby’s recreational life. Another great start to my day❤🇦🇺
As I watch your accurate, helpful tutorials I'm amazed at the total disregard for basic maintenance. If Stihl saws were throw away types might understand but they are pricey. In heavy equipment don't see this as much, yes don't care types are more prevalent of late. I'll keep it civil.
Lol, sucked more dirt than my Dyson vacuum cleaner!!! I could tell you were getting aggravated and felt sorry for this little saw. Another fantastic video... keep up the good work!
I like your videos. These are great for guys like me who never had a father figure to teach us these things. I just went out and dinked around with my little MS 170 for a couple hours. it's been road hard and put away wet. only run a few tanks of gas a year out of it though. I've been known to break things easy so just for kicks, I checked the spark arrester, plug, fuel and air filters, took a look inside the cylinder and piston on the exhaust side. and cleaned most of the gunk and crap out of it and dumped all the old dirty gas out. everything looked pretty decent. eventually want to get a tune up kit for it. want to get a bigger one but not sure what to get. leaning towards a 271-farm boss with 20" bar.
I am not a fan of paperwork but maybe have a checklist tag when a saw comes in. When did it last run ? What is wrong with it ? Maybe show what the problem is . Who worked on it last ? What service was done? Would you like full service as well? Air filter new plug fuel filter cleaning . I would also include in repair air filter and cleaning on all service Us men are an easy bunch just tell it like it is eventually we will get it
I’m learning a lot watching your channel. After watching one of the videos I pulled out a recent auction purchased McCulloch 2.0 saw and gave it the evaluation. Fuel tank was dry, bar oil tank was full of nasty old 40:1. I remedied that, cleaned the air filter, and mixed some 40:1 fresh. Surprisingly it coughed, then it ran a few seconds, and finally I got it to stay running at idle. I think the diaphragms are dry, but I remember Chickanic advised to let it run to see if they soften up. I managed to get it to rev up and go back to idle w/o stalling. So I took it outside to test. Dull dull dull. I remember you saying a dull chain is the fastest way to ruin a saw. So I stopped it and ordered a new chain, it will be here Friday. Thanks to your help, this 1988 McCulloch might cut a tree again. Thank you for quality content!!
A fellow down the road from me gave me a free Mac 3214. All it needed was new fuel lines, a fuel filter and a new ($12) amazon carb. The saw runs great and is one of my best "saved from the landfill" chainsaws. I've got a several Macs and they all cut well.
My favorite MS170 repair was when a customer brought me one with gas in the bar oil tank and bar oil in the gas tank. For some reason he couldn't get it to start 😉
I appreciate you and your videos. Im just a homeowner in Los Angeles California. You have taught me to respect my machines and learn how to maintain, use, and store my machines. You, Steves saloon, chicanic, Donyboy are all great and i thank you for your help!
I am a little surprised that the saw could leave the shop without replacing the spark arrestor screen. I do sense some frustration as to the neglect of the machine. Inside the cylinder looked pretty good for the ingested dirt. Tough machine. Carry on.
I’ve heard people call the chain brake a guard, perhaps the chain brake engaged and he thought the “bar holder” was broken! Anymore lawn mower racing video? That looks like fun
Happy Monday Erika. My guess is the Rocket Scientist who left the note of a broken bar holder stuck a screwdriver in the empty hole on the side cover and attempted to adjust the chain tension from there instead of the front of the saw. Let me know when you talk to the customer. If this is true you should definitely sell him a kit to move the adjuster!! Thanks for the videos.
Your videos are so addictive, the way you introduce what your going to show us in the video, the way you work out problems and the way you show us the fixes, even the way you pour out the old fuel, you make it look so simple and of course its far from that. Huge thank you! PS loved the racing!
I’m guessing the owner bought it secondhand or had the saw given to him. He can see the hole in the clutch cover, where he could tension the chain, if the saw was fitted with the adaption kit. But he doesn’t realise, that as is, he can’t tension the chain from the side and is assuming the tensioner is broken.
I would think people who don’t know much about chainsaw should read their manual book or at least RUclips it. Love watching all of your videos along with others i watch. Love to learn and watch. It teaches me on mine of course i happen own poulan pro
I like that you don’t sugar coat stuff. People buy chainsaws and don’t know how to sharpen the chain or mix fuel, tighten chain, or do any maintenance. Let alone how to use it. This generation can’t take any criticism or they will cry like a baby. Can’t learn if you don’t want to hear what they did wrong. Tell it it how it is. Man up or woman up for crying out loud.
Thank you for sharing your insights on customer behavior and explaining how your shop protects against subpar equipment or customers that may be playing you a bit. Need any more help?
The Tractor race looked like fun!!!!! MS170 is about $249 now. Still a very good deal . I put some of my award winning stuff on the wall in my little shop, for fun. LOL
I love MS170’s! I’m sad they are discontinued. Good thing I packed two new ones away for a rainy day. Thanks for watching Bruce!! How’s the weather out there?
I have one of these from new and while the front tensioners work they're an ergonomic curse. After a few years I asked my local Stihl dealer for the spikes and side tensioner. Luckly I had the part numbers because at first they didn't believe that it was possible. They started believing after the installation happened on their own front counter!
Given no helpful information you did a methodical assessment and probably saved the machine. Focus on the people who appreciate your service. Stay positive. You’re a great mechanic!
1 hour diagnostic is the minimum. I found the verbiage does make a difference. Diagnostic imparts there is knowledge, competency, value. Were just cutting tree carcasses.
Well now this is a interesting video and I have been enjoying all of your repair videos. I can't believe that anyone would run an air filter to the point of being that dirty and allowing dirt to bypass it and go right into your motor. I will say one thing that is a piss-poor excuse for a filter. There's no way that sthil could have put a cheaper looking filter on a chainsaw.

Nice waking up and finding a new video uploaded, get my coffee and the cat comes up and we watch you together then i shake my head and think WTF, how can people actually let their machinery run down so much. Good for you thou $$$ and us to watch but seriously?
Looked like the chain tensioner was full back, if the pin was behind the bar and the cover put on….. it would have not been able to push the bar forward to properly tension 😎. Rookie mistake 😂
I have one of these little hobby saws and it is a real workhorse for a homeowner. I don't know if I would tackle cutting up 10 cord of firewood with it, but it would probably be OK. I like the idea of the tensioner relocation kit. I'm going to install one over the winter. Thanks again for your awesome content. I learn something new every time I tune in to one of your videos. :)

It looks like the owner knows nothing about the chain tensioner and probably didn’t have it engaged in the bar so the chain slacked off in use. It’s amazing how little some people know about their tools and are unwilling to learn.
Awesome video. Same as my dad’s 170, quick throttle response. Do you sell or have worked on the new MS182 yet? I purchased one for limbing and when my MS361 first went into the shop. My chain slackens and tightens as i spin it on the bar. I did an engine rebuild (but kept the old crankshaft). Does this mean that the crankshaft is bent and thats the cause of my problem?
The saws that you throw in the junk pile, could they be given to high school students who are studying small engines. I mean that you don't have to deliver, but the auto shop teacher could pick up them from you. Just an idea. I love your chainsaw repair videos and always learn something. Thanks!
As careful you might think you are it’s a great idea to actually flush the fuel tank and oil reservoir occasionally. Crazy how people just drop off these extremely filthy saws and other equipment to be serviced. I pressure wash my vehicle engine compartments before I take them in for any service. 😮
Damn I dont even own a brand name chainsaw but I take more care of mine than some of these owners do. Its just a chinese chainsaw that I paid 100$ for it but I make sure it has good fuel and filters and it is cleaned after use.
Erica, some people have more money than sense! To leave a chainsaw in that condition after use on a $200 - $300 tool has anyone heard of cleaning or maintenance. Obviously this owner is not fit to possess a dangerous tool like this, I dread to think hat injuries the owner or possibly others could have had if that chain had jumped or snapped in that condition. Obviously the owner would rather spend money on purchasing new tools rather than spend money on maintaining and looking after it. My father brought me up to clean and look after my tools and in return they’ll look after you in reliability and keep you safe. I certainly take heed in his advice and do not abuse my tools. In fact if my tools needed repairs in a repair workshop I would be very embarrassed to submit a tool in for repair in that state.
You should produce a proforma with the relevant questions listed then whoever receives the saw can complete it before accepting it in, doesn’t have to be a long thing just covers the main questions you need answers to
There should be a hotline you can call when you see power equipment being neglected and abused. Offenders should have to sit in a class until they learn how to properly use and care for their equipment. 😂
You could make an ASPCA style video for abused and neglected OPE. You know the style, with the sad looking dog on a chain 10x too big with no food, water, or shelter in sight.
