    Writers tend to be creative. When it comes to publishing copy the experts. Select a newly released book from a noted author, one that will be on the NYT bestseller list. The book will provide the book size, page size, and book layout. Select a random page of full text and type that page in Word. Select the exact font style and size. Then adjust margins, header and footer spacing, and line spacing until exactly matches the published book. Do the same for the header and footer. I held my printed page to the published book for an exact match. Then I did the same for the chapter match. Once complete, save format for books you intend to publish. Now, I had the winning publishing formula for a best seller. Always use Microsoft Word styles' for formatting, not individual indents and such.

      Great question! I've used Scrivener for a few books, and it can be incredibly helpful in terms of keeping your scenes and chapters organized, but recently I've been writing in Word. Where were you a year ago when I started this whole process! This was so much simpler to follow than most tutorials I've seen. My third proof should arrive today, but now I'm thinking I may be ordering a fourth. I did learn that KDP templates are useless. It went so much better by saving my manuscript as a PDF before uploading. I will need to look, but if you don't have a video on proper formatting for character conversations, that would be amazing!

Question: I am using CANVA to design my book covers. I made the covers to the dpi requirements of KDP, and saved them. Could you make a video on just “uploading covers to KDP?” It would eliminate the most “terrifying step” of self-publishing! 🙏🏻 Thank you!

  • @kateh4595
    @kateh4595 2 года назад +2

    Great tutorial. Thanks! Another thing you can do it to create a special style for all those first paragraphs after a chapter or other break. I call mine "first paragraph" Style. Just keep everything exactly the same as your normal text EXCEPT that you do not select "1st line indent" under the paragraph tab. That way, you don't have to go through and remove all those indents. You highlight the paragraph and select the new style you created instead and poof, the indent disappears. This is not necessarily easier than manually removing the indent for each of those paragraphs but the big advantage is that if you change something like the exact size of the indent for most of your paragraphs, the change will not affect all your 1st paragraphs. They will remain without indent because they are programed to have their own style. This is no big deal if you are dealing with a short document but if you are writing a long book, you may like to do this.

    I questioned the validity of removing the indentation of the first line after a chapter heading or scene break. It goes against everything I've ever been taught about paragraphs. And of course, I've never seen it done in anything I've ever read. So, I grabbed several books and... you're absolutely right! Holy Mandela Effect, Batman! All these years of reading and this typesetting norm has eluded my attention. I even went back and grabbed some older books and saw it was done then as well. It's one of those things that you don't notice until someone points it out. Thank you for doing so!

    I have a long way to go with this, but your concise tutorial has been invaluable to me. I still have footers I do not want, My chapters seem to be all over the place, but I am so much further ahead than I would have been without your help.

    Hello Natalia, your video was so helpful. I just have a question for you….do you know if KDP 5x8 size book can be printed in the landscape view? Please let me know. Thank you! Laurie

    THANK YOU. Your tutorial was to the point and easy to follow. Subscribed.
    I would love to see one on the frustrating and unnecessarily confusing removal of page numbers for the first one or two pages.

    Natalia, I think that your video should be recommended by KDP to new authors before launching into drafting the book. I found the manuscript formatting to be very difficult to create mostly because I was not familiar with your formula. Free lance authors like yourself makes a difference. Great job! Thank you. Any ghost writing?

    If you add to not have space between paragraphs NO ONE WILL EVER READ YOUR BOOKS! Always have proper spacing between paragraphs!

    Thank you so much for the information. I believe your video is the best video that I've seen and understood. I'm just starting off writing to be on KDP but I have done a lot of journal writing to myself. Not understanding how to do this for the public has been a bit of a challenge but you've explained it so very well God bless you and your family.
