I cannot even express how incredibly grateful I am for this video. Seriously, thank you so much! When I wrote my first book like 4 years ago, I tried to format it myself and I was in tears wanting to just smash my computer to bits. I ended up hiring a formatter, but I was really unhappy with not being able to easily go in and fix something if I noticed a mistake or wanted to change the backmatter of my books. So I'm SOOOO happy to have such a great tutorial now that I'm learning how to do it myself again! No tears this time around, and it looks beautiful!

You are an absolute book nerd. And I love it ! You are super easy to follow along with. You speak quickly, (this is great for people who get bored easily). But you explain things thoroughly.
I've just written my first book. It is fiction but also includes important dates in history. Such as these fictional characters attend real concerts on those exact days, etc.
I completed my first book which was 300 pages (takes place in 2006 to present). then I began writing the prequel (the parents of the characters from the first book, that one takes place in the 1980's).
This is something I've always wanted to do. I just turned 50 and I'm a badass, i know shit about this book writing thing. I wrote the rough sketch, then I used Chat GPT to help me with the "He said.. She said" and expressions.
I'm not a huge fan of Chat GPT, though. it just tries to add way to much filler.
i probably shouldn't written that, it's probably watching to me right now 🙂.
I want to put these books in paperback, i just don't know where to start. I wrote it in google docs, then transferred it to Word.
Your suggestion about using titles for easy navigation is frigan key !! A marvelous idea. It's something I did in G Docs since the first page.
    Thank you for the video.

The quicker way to do it would have just to have changed the style of the normal text. You could have changed the font, font size, indents justification, and line spacing in the style and then it would have applied it to all text of that style, and would not have changed the headings at all. :)

Thanks and you have a new subbie!

  • @thekamiakai
    @thekamiakai 6 лет назад +4

For formatting, you can either change the styles and anything that is set to that style will automatically change, but that is on the newer Word. On all words there is a little paint brush, if you have the ribbons then it will be under the clipboard. You select the style you like, double click the paintbrush then quickly select the text you want to have in that style. If you only want it once you just click the paintbrush once.
Page breaks = CTRL + ENTER
Also if you justify short paragraphs (between 2 and five words) it will add weird spacing between the words. You have to make sure that those paragraphs are left aligned or it will be weird looking.

At 11:16, you explain that you copy the format for the beggining of each chaoater and past it so that it matches for the 2nd chapter (hope that makes sense). On your Home tab, there is a tool that says Format Painter. If you highlightwhat you want and click Format Painter, then take it to chapter 2 and highlight the area you want to change, it will change it for you with the format for Chapter 1. If this doesn't make sense, look up how to use format painter.

The manual part is so much easier if you just make the subheadings another Heading, and then instead of hitting [Enter] two to three times, just adding another subheading with no words in its title line. That lets you change the font, indentation, alignment, and color and size of all three sections of each chapter separately and more easily/quickly. Of course, this method does not consider chapter indexes (which is fine if your book doesn't contain one).
    [Heading 1: "Chapter One"]
    [Heading 2: "Bright Night"]
    [Heading 2: (no text)]
    Body of Chapter

I loved all the formatting that you showed, as the one other youtubers say they use do not seem to want to work with me. The only problem i had following your steps, was the when i do page breaks, it doesn't break it up into sections like yours did. Mine just says header and footer, that's all

Glad you enjoyed the video! Make sure you select "Breaks" and then "Next Page" under the Section Breaks category and not "Page" under the Page Breaks category. If you have a different Word, it might be in a different spot, but it sounds like you were using a page break and not a section break. Happy formatting 😊

I think the reason the page count seemed off is that Word does weird stuff with section breaks. Basically, it often adds a blank page that it doesn't show. You can click around and two consecutive pages will seem like they jump a number. If you switch to the Print Preview, you will see the extra pages.
The only work around I have found is to experiment with deleting section breaks and replacing them with "section break - next odd page" and "section break - next even page." One of those two always work.
