BOOK FORMATTING IN WORD | Page numbers and additional header formatting

- As indie authors, we are responsible for our books' formatting, and that process can be intimidating if you're just getting started. I've formatted all of my own books in Microsoft Word, and along the way I've taught myself how to do so in a way that looks and feels professional and often includes eye-catching visual elements.
In today's video, I'll show you how to insert page numbers and other header/footer elements without totally messing up the rest of your formatting. It's a little tricky, but once you know what you're doing and what to look for, it's not too hard.
Demo manuscript for you to download and see the formatting from this video: www.dropbox.com/s/waxc7pvuo45...

I have fought with formatting on Word for months, watching youtube instructionals over and over with great frustration. You have set me free, finally, with your guidance I've done it. Thank you!
Excellent! You're the first person who actually explained this how-to with ease. I've watched many 'try' to explain the same how-to and failed miserably. Thank you for taking your valuable time.
This was really helpful and clear and easy to follow and it worked. Been tearing my hair out to get page numbers right and there are a lot of dreadful videos about how to do it. You are stand out the best! Thank you!
So glad I found your channel this fixes some of the issues I've been having. Many notes taken! Thanks
Thank you! Numbering has historically given me fits, but you made it understandable! I do appreciate your helpful effort.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much. This is the thing I had struggled with the most. Not any more. You are a star.🌻
Thanks. Nicely done. Simplified and to the point.
Love your videos. CAn you please make one for open quotation marks on drop caps? It's really difficult trying to get it done
Totally in love with this video! You answered all of my questions thank you so much.
This video has absolutely saved me. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this video! Ive been trying to fix the page numbers for hours!
This was great and so easy to follow! Thanks!
I am also a fan of Red Rising. Thanks for the tutorial!
Such great info! Thank you!! 👍🏼
Page numbering my Amazon books has always proved very tricky. The most awkward part is leaving the headers off the new chapter pages and the first few pages of the book.
Very useful and informative. Thank you.
Thank you all so much for checking out this video series and for your likes and comments. I'm so glad it's been helpful for so many of you.
I've had a ton of people asking questions about specific formatting issues or problems, and while I would love to answer all of them, I simply don't have the time (or the knowledge sometimes) to respond to every specific question. Microsoft Word isn't the best or the easiest formatting tool out there, so it is pretty tricky to get things right.
Most of what I've shown here was learned through trial and error and many, many Google searches. You can find many of the solutions to your problems that way. I'm sorry I can't respond to every single question but I wish you all the best of luck in your formatting endeavors!
Could you help me I'm really struggling to complete my manuscript the last thing I need is to set the page numbers but I'm having a lot of trouble in word. Is there any way I could email you and you could take a look at it? Section breaks are really difficult and all my page numbers keep repeating
I'm trying to publish and this has been driving me crazy for the past two days. All I'm trying to do is remove a page number from a blank page and then continue the page numbers. But its so complicated. I dont understand why word hasnt updated or made this process simpler.
Great! Thanks. I've looked at several videos for help and yours is the best. Your voice is great at 1.25x. I did not listen at normal speed, so this is not an implicit comment on that.
Keep doing the great work. Bravo
Thank you for this very useful video!
Another Great Video 🔊🥇
Thanks for the video
Thank you. I am looking for assistance with section breaks on a Second Edition of my book. The page numbers and/or headers are messing up each time I need a section break to keep all chapters starting on the right side pages. Thank you for your channel.
I find your tutorials to be very, very helpful. You are very clear and your pace is wonderful so that I’m able to keep up with you in trying to learn some formatting things. I mean that seriously because so many others do not have good diction and it’s very difficult to understand them.
I’m In a quandary at the moment, I’m having trouble with something that I’ve never had trouble with MICROSOFT before, and that is page numbers. I mastered it from what you said in starting numbering in the actual body of my book rather than at the beginning pages and starting page one there. But all of a sudden, my pages have reverted to starting with page one and sequencing a few numbers after that and then stopping all numbers whatsoever. I must’ve done something else because it also tells me that I have six sections and I even went in and tried to delete sections and was not successful. Just from this confusing information I wonder if you can offer me any advice.
I also want to do my headers with odd pages carrying the title and even pages my name, but for some unknown reason I have been unable to master that.
I really would appreciate any advice. Thank you and keep on making those great videos.
thank you so much!!!
This is the most helpful tutorial, thank you so much. Your screen appears blurry but even so this was SO helpful1
Maybe check what resolution the playback is set at in your RUclips player? If it's not that then it's the recording resolution on my end, so I'm sorry about that. This was my first time using OBS to screen record something and I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't do it very well, lol
Greate video tutorial, would you a cooking recipe tutorial or a template, thank you
This is really great. I only wish you would have included the front matter, and how to add a section break in so that you're starting your numbers where you think you are. I've been struggling HARD with all this!
Thank you so much!! When I selected the entire document (using the most recent version of MS Word), and selected the widows and orphan, keep text etc, text shifted on its own page and if I try to manually put them together it's not working. Help!
Great video only issue is on the tool headers you have kindle and header & footer after Help... how did you add those into word ?
Thank you for this video...but I'm still having a hard time. I still can't get the page numbers to start later in the document. I've followed your instructions exactly. Maybe MS word has updated and changed things. Any ideas are appreciated.
OMG!! I have been looking for this info! Thank you so much! My only question is, what about a book that, in additon to what you taught here, has pages with full images that bleed off the pages? What about the page numbers where you don't want them on the image pages and don't want the universal margins? I'm having a heck of a time with this!
I'm so sorry for the delayed response but I do use full bleed images in some of my books. You want to make sure you set up the file with a little extra space on each side (Amazon has specific guidelines about this that you can look up) and then I just size my images to fit the entire document page. If you don't want numbers on pages with images, you'll have to separate out the images as a new section. I do have a video all about including images and formatting them if that's still helpful to you at this point.
Thanks 🌎
I'm beginning to wonder if we are using different versions of MS Word lol. I can't get the pages to start correctly either :( i'm using 365.
Oh no, that may be possible. A lot of it should carry over but the settings may be under different menus in some cases. In others it may just not work. That's unfortunate.
Hi, thank you so much for this. I'm struggling with pagination for a 44 page coffee table book where there'll be a lot of pictures and not a lot of text. Help :( And thank you!
Your video was very helpful! thank you. one thing I still need help with is how to ensure that all the chapters start on an odd page number. Not sure if there's a special tip for that.
I only ever try to make sure my first chapter starts on page 1, and then however the rest of them start doesn't matter to me. I have seen where all the chapters start on an odd page, in which case you would sometimes just need to insert a blank page between the end of the previous chapter (if it ends on an odd page) and the beginning of the next.
Could I use the chapter name in place of book name? Can you specify different configurations for header v. footer -- ex if I want "chapter title" on each odd page, except first page of chapter? When I try, it doesn't seem to allow me to have different settings for the header v. footer. I'm struggling with the sections too.
Thanks for this video. Some parts were a little hard for these old eyes (even with glasses) to see. :)
Headers are my issue right now. What I did not see you cover/show is whether, after adding the headers, they appeared on your previous unnumbered pages. Word adds my headers to every single page, regardless of which page is #1. How did you NOT get the headers to show on the unwanted pages? - thank you
Hello:) Great video! I was just wondering if I were to put the author name and chapter title (for each individual chapter) right into the header alongside the page numbers (on the extremities)... how should I proceed? (As I am looking to keep the footers for any additional information such as *, 1, and/or a's )
I'm not sure I'm fully understanding your question correctly, but you can put anything you want into the headers, it doesn't have to be specifically what I included in the demo. You will have to be in the header editing section when you insert your page numbers, but if you just select them as "insert page number" and then "current position" like I did here, you can then edit, move, resize, etc. however you'd like. Depending on where you want the other text (author name, chapter title, etc.) you may have to tab over or enter the page number on a separate line, still within the header. I would encourage you to just play around with it and experiment to see what you like best, but you can really customize those headers to look however you want. :)
@@f1racedrive in that case you should just be able to change them for every chapter, not for every single page. Still kind of tedious but not terrible.
This may be an odd request. I wrote an autobiography but I don't intend it to be published for wide-ranging distribution; it's just for some close friends of mine (there's some personal stuff in there). Is there a cost-effective way to get only 3 or 4 copies published?
I just have a quick question. To preface it, I have to say that I used to think that I had a fairly good knowledge of technology and especially of MICROSOFT, but putting together a book for possible PUBLISHING is a tremendous challenge. I think it is because of so many convoluted steps. The The topic for the week this week has been starting page one on the ninth page of the book at the introduction. I tried it first the way it was told by another RUclipsr and then I tried your suggestions and it worked!!! However, it worked for about three minutes and after that I had all the odd pages set but no even pages anywhere in a 218 page manuscript. They were there. They just didn’t have page numbers. Please before I go back and take out all the section markings and everything. I wonder if you could just help me with one particular question: can I finish all my editing and formatting and then go back and try to tackle pages at the very end?
Also, for a quick second question: is it possible for me to get the results I want with page numbers without taking out section breaks and going back and undoing everything that I’ve done?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i downloaded this video
Thanks for this. But I have a question. Why didn't your author name show up on the chapter header page? Did you create some form of setting that stopped that from happening?
My Header format is the same for the first few pages, then for all of the rest of the pages, it has a wider gap from the top of the page. Can you tell me how to fix this? Please and Thank you.
Thank you but it only works for the first two chapters for some reason. Is there a button I don't have turned on I wonder. I figured it out. Go to current position and that gets it going again
how do I remove numbering from blank pages inside the text. I have title page then blank then text. I am using MS Word book template sourced from Amazon. So essentially I have title page, blank pge then text starts. If I add in section break it adds another page which disturbs the print layout for content publishing. I use ingramspark for the final publishing process.
I wanted to find out how to add the chapter # in each chapter, When I add the chapter # to the chapter the same chapter in the header appears on all pages. How can I make it chapter specific. do you have a video on that?
Regarding trying to get back matter without pagination, when I click on 'Link to previous' to unlink it, it removes all of those (even) page numbers throughout the book. How can I resolve this?
Mine doesn't change after I change the formatting to start on 1 it just stays the same?
I'm having problems!! 😥😔 Hope you might be able to help me!! When formatting, its done to sizes & margins, (certain widths inside & outside.)
When you 'ODD PAGE BREAK' & 'EVEN PAGE BREAK,' it alters the first page you add your numbers to. Sometimes it makes the 1st page (No#-2), sometimes the gutter is on the wrong side as it flips automatically... then it's impossible to fix. Also, when I add 'NEXT PAGE page break as instructed,' it adds an empty page... that I cannot even with a delete button doesnt fix it correctly.
It either alters the page layoutS (plural) and messes up the whole document, or just messes the page numbering. How do I get the correct page alignments using section breaks!!??
Where am I going wrong??? I'm in despair trying to just do basic formatting!! Thanks in advance!! 🙏
Question. When I enter the header on the odd numbered pages, it's putting it on the chapter pages as well. How do I remove it from those pages?
Could be a couple of different things. 1) You have to make sure every chapter is in it's own section, so you'll need to make sure you have section breaks at the end of every chapter so that the new one can start in a new section. 2) There's a checkbox under the headers and footers tab that says "different first page" and you'll want to make sure that is checked. Sometimes it will be in one section/chapter but not the other, so you might have to go through and make sure it's checked for all your chapters.
If you're not sure how to do any of that, I did show it in my previous video on this series--the one about chapter headers. You can also just Google it and find good instructions if that's easier. Hope that helps!
@@ta_hernandez5 Awesome, thanks!
@@RichardFierceWrites i have the same problem.
@@ECCLESIAOFBURNINGONESS T.A. was correct. I didn't use section breaks. I reformatted with those for each chapter and it worked perfectly.
help!!! how do i remove the headers from the very first page of every chapter without disrupting all the others?? thank you!!
i solved it !!!!!
???How do you keep your chapter page from having a header in it???❓
How do you make chapter pages exempt from having headers?
You have to make sure the "different first page" box is checked in the headers section.
The problem that I'm facing is that number page changes in my word files when I upload to Amazon KDP??!
The Kindle version page count will always change because I think it's based on the number of words in the file and not the actual pages in the document.
When I format to 1 it doesn't work and brings me to the first page.
It’s quite a complicated process with page and section breaks and removing a header so there isn’t one for chapter title page. HELP!
Question and you might not know. I self-publish for my congregations benefit, not for making my first million dollars. I use an HP color laser. My booklet size is 4 X6 inch. I want to print face to face and create booklets. I do an inside file and a cover file. I am having trouble when I print on my Colorjet. It starts to take in the data to the printer then I get a print workflow error. Any ideas? I do want to learn how to set up ebooks of my booklets as well.
What about google. Docs, please?
Unfortunately I haven't messed with Google Docs enough to know if this process (or similar) would work, but it is something I'm considering doing in the future.
This is not working for me. I don't know if I'm doing something right or wrong. :(
If you select the footer of the page you want to start numbering at, make sure (Link to Previous) is not selected. Look up this setting.
Also make sure each chapter is in its own section, under (layout).
@@andrewhopkins1694 thanks. I had to fill myself with a lot of patience and thankfully I managed to do it just like you said. Thank you btw 😊
You are looking beautiful, ha hahaha
None of the things in the video worked. What version of word are you using?
