I seen a Lady on twitter asking for advice, Due to having trouble with her editor. Apparently who ever she was going through another guy didn't have a very good review for the Company Brand. So I shared your video in a direct message.
I dont have time to see the video. Can you write here the total amoubt you soent? Thabks
Please make a video on ISBN
You should totally make a "Things I Have Learned since Song of the Dryad" video, that way you can cover copyright and formatting and the tips. I'd definitely appreciate it! Also can you go into how to market a book?
Hey, thanks for the request! I made a video on this topic that you can watch here if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/ZVa5sV9MDl4/видео.html
Thank you so much! This video was so helpful, and informative. I’m a 24 year old paralyzed quadriplegic, and currently writing my first novella as an introduction to the world. Thanks again 🤘🏼
Hey let me know, when you get it published. Would love to check it out!
This video was so incredibly helpful. I'm 17 and strongly looking into self-publishing the novel I've been working on for two years, thanks to having heard a thousand different horror stories from some acquaintances who published their books traditionally. Like you said, no one does it perfectly their first time, but I am really trying to explore my options and find out what would work best for me. As a teenager who has no idea where to start, this video pointed out some things I hadn't even considered. Thank you. Now, I'm off to binge your videos.
I'm at the other end of the age-scale. I'm 77½ looking to publish a first collection of poetry written for young people . . . very much a niche market.
How did you get on
Wishing you the best of luck!
Finally someone talks about it!! Thanks so much! I'm intending to self-publish so this was interesting. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it Fee! I hope it'll help you budget and plan for your own self-publishing journey :)
You're right on with the copyright. As for the non-registration vs registration distinction, as of a recent Supreme Court case, you can actually no longer file a copyright lawsuit until you've registered the work with the copyright office. Saw a few cases get thrown out this year because of that ruling. But, it's a procedure thing. You don't have to have the work registered at the time it gets infringed, but before you take your case to the court, you'll have to get around to registering it, anyway. So you might as well up front.
Plus! When you register your copyrighted work completely changes what types of compensation you can get in court if someone copies your stuff. If they infringe a registered copyrighted work, the copyright holder can go after them for up to $150,000 per infringed work in court. If they infringe when your work isn't registered, then you register it so you can sue them, your damages are limited to pretty much what it would have cost them to pay you to license your work for their purpose.
All that aside, there's some movement right now at Congress for more options for smaller artists to enforce their copyright, because the average cost of a copyright lawsuit is upwards of $250k. Yikes.
Instead of Writing Thank you so much for sharing all that information! It’s incredibly helpful and makes me glad that I decided to officially register with the copyright office 👍🏻
This is a special case for the United States only.
Here in Australia there is no formal copyright registration system. The copyright owner has full rights immediately and automatically when they create anything, and this is also the way it is in the rest of the developed world.
If the US wishes to fix their silly copyright system, all they have to do is _remove_ the requirement to register copyright, and it's done and dusted.
Also, the International Copyright Treaty means that somebody in the US violating the copyright of an Australian citizen automatically gets Australian law applied, which becomes very painful - financially - for that idiot because our courts take a very dim view of copyright violations.
@@pauligrossinoz The US Copyright system isn't all bad. It's like insurance. When something is filed and officially copyrighted, you have proof and a date. Otherwise, you can have two people right a similar song, but how do you prove who was first and who copied? This way, we have an official documented event that's filed and registered. I can write a song without copyright by mailing a copy to myself and not opening the package. Then it's officially dated by the post office. It's not as strong in court, but it's better than nothing.
If you don't copyright your work in Australia, how do you prove the date it was written? Our system doesn't sound so silly to me.
@@TexanUSMC8089 - in the rest of the world, not just Australia, you can simply produce your own dated copies of the earlier revisions.
And today, electronic versions are valid in a court. You don't need to post any hard-copies anymore. Server logs can be accessed as necessary.
The actual author of the book will be constantly producing new revisions to their manuscripts and sending them to people for review, not the plagiarist, so it's a simple matter for the judge to decide who is lying.
No judge is going to believe that a completed, polished manuscript materialised in the first revision. It's basically not ever been a real problem for authors.
And the best part is that by International Treaty, any copyright cases are decided in the author's jurisdiction, so if a US person decides to try to steal my manuscript(!), the Australian Judge will make the decision. And obviously they will decide in my favour, because I've already emailed heaps of people my revisions so far.
The US system takes a non-issue for authors, and turns it into a barrier with a price tag. It's worse than pointless.
I bought the ebook of Song of the Dryad, because I live outside the United States and shipping is a fortune. But I'm seeing the hardcover in your hand and it's so beautiful!
Thank you! I mostly buy e-books as well, but there's something so magical about a hardcover book!
I did the same, not because I live over seas though, it was because I was short on funds and needed the budget option, and i've finally just started reading it, and now that I see how even more fantabulous the cover looks, I've fallen in love and plan to buy as an (next) xmas gift for myself.
@@BPRINC1 I hope you enjoy the story, and thank you so much for your support! 💙
@@NataliaLeigh I live in Germany und bought the paperback via amazon, which looks also very nice.
Unfortunately I really don't like reading ebooks 😅. My hands need to feel the pages.
Can you go into the nitty gritty details of self publishing, such what exactly to send in a manuscript to the copyright office especially when you are dealing with a cover designer...and how to format like a pro?
Every time I hear people talking about having to buy an ISBN, I’m amazed and horrified. They are free in Canada.
What are the limitations of a Canadian ISBN? Is it only limited to distribution in Canada / only available to Canadian residents?
@@adrianpillai6645 they are the same as any other isbn but only Canadians can get them
I ended up buying the pack of 100 ISBNs for $595. Big one-time expense, but each one only cost $5.95, and I am set for ISBNs for the foreseeable future. (I needed 24 ISBNs for one series, 8 books in paperback, ebook, and audiobook, so I had little choice.)
Will you also barcodes as well?
As far as I'm aware, using free KDP ISBN means that Amazon is the publishing house rather than (e.g.) Enchanted Ink, or our own publishing house/LLC.
I also know/as far as I'm aware in the UK at least (don't quote me if I'm wrong 🙈) you have to register (when you copyright, pre-publication) your book with 5 different places -
Book Depository*
British Library
Library of Congress
(Other 2 I cannot remember off the top of my head).
*Only 1 that's mandatory, the other 4 are good to have.
Your cover is exquisite. I went to 8 little pages to check them out because I liked it so much and they'd gone out of business. I'm not shocked with how badly they treated you. It sounds like with Pistol Daisy you'll be spending a lot less money and hopefully your profits will be a lot higher! You have to sell a lot of books to even break even at $2800, plus ads etc. Good luck with your new book.
Thank you for this. I received an offer for publishing from a company based out of the UK (I live state-side) and this confirmed for me that the prices they pitched me, along with the equity split they brought, were hugely unfavorable to me. I would actually go ahead and describe them as downright predatory.
Best of luck to you with your future books as well.
It is totally predatory. Run away from any publisher that charges you even £1 to publish a book. They are usually vanity publishers, and don't care about you or your work so will charge a fortune and then not do much for marketing - it is better to self-publish.
Traditional publishers will pay you money, rather than you paying then. money should always flow from the publisher to you, not from you to them
With the copyright, if you register you can seek legal options if someone plagiarizes you, but you can’t if you don’t register.
Krysteen Damon Thanks for the additional info!
What's the point of it, then?
All works are automatically copywritin without registration. Copywrite just allows you to be very specific about what is protected such as character names and titles.
Great video. Thanks for breaking down costs...helps me as I'm thinking of self-publishing a children's book. Your information is invaluable.
This was such an interesting breakdown! I'd love to know what copyediting courses you're taking/where you're taking them? I have a similar background to you (BA in Creative Writing with a minor in Publishing & Editing) but I'd really like to take some refresher courses just to stay on top of things!
That was very informative. Thank you for sharing! I might be going this route, but we'll see! I love the cover, as well as the illustrations.
Hi Heather! I'm glad you enjoyed it - I never realized how expensive self-publishing could be before I just jumped right in. Hopefully this will help people get more of an idea about pricing, budgeting, etc.
Such a great resource for new authors to learn more about the nitty-gritty behind Self Publishing! Thank you for sharing your experience and your knowledge. The cost certainly veries depending on what self-pub avenue you take, and sometimes the investment is present in the outcome. The world of publishing is a fun one!
Your book cover looks so nice
Thank you! I love how it turned out.
publishyourfirstbook.blogspot.com/2020/11/self-publishing-vs-traditional.html
Very informative. I definitely rushed my process and now I am having to go back and make my first book better. Guess it’s a good thing I didn’t do hard copies yet. Lol. I’m grateful to those who have read my book though and enjoyed it.
I did that too. 😬 At least we can go back and fix it. 🙂
@@heatherkirchhoffwritesya Yup. Lots of grammar things. Should have had that professional edit done. Live and learn, do better and better as you go!
@@latishaaustin3740 Exactly. :) That's all we can do. Learn and keep going.
I feel ya! I've rushed some things in the past that I wish I hadn't, but it's all part of the process. 💙
Great video and I relived some of my pains. I learned from the experience with my cover designer that I will always make sure to get the source files included in my contract.
Great information, thanks for sharing! My budget is a bit higher as I am paying for a developmental edit before I work on my last draft, and then paying for the copy edit. But given this is my debut, I don't want to mess it up, so I feel it's a good investment.
I find copyright the most confusing thing ever haha I'm pretty sure you're right in the fact that everything you write is copywritten. I'm pretty sure you have to email/mail it to yourself to give it a "timestamp" so to speak. But if you ever want to bring someone to court, you'll have an easier time winning your case if you filed for copyright and paid for it. On my bucket list is to just talk to a legit lawyer about it and really find out whether or not it's worth it to pay.
Anosther excellent video... but yes the cost was a little intimidating. I appreciate the "Pistol Daisy" follow up video....with lower costs, but I appreciate how you broke all the costs down. It has been an intimidating process trying to get through all the "self publishing" services "sales pitches" - to find a true breakdown of the wheres, whats, and whys. This video clarified it very well. Thank you.
Love this. I'm thinking of self publishing. This is so helpful. You're a god send. ❤️
I'd be curious why you chose Ingramspark, versus Lulu, versus Createspace, versus Bookbaby, etc.
Todd Warner I’d be more than happy to make a video about why I chose IngramSpark over the others, if you’re interested 😊
Yes please
@@NataliaLeigh That would be really helpful
I'd love this topic too. I notice Ingraham Sparks says they make the books available to Amazon. Does that mean an author doesn't need a KDP account?
I would like this vid too. Please make it, it would be very useful.
That whole process sounds so stressful 😭 awesome to see how far you've come!
Bless you for this, helped so much.
Very happy to hear it! 😊
Yes - a copyright exists as long as it is an original idea put down in some kind of physical medium. That is, when you write it as a Word file, and email it to yourself, you have total copyright protection with a date stamp under the law. If you want to file with The Library Of Congress you get a number which can help in the event of a legal dispute.
Love the books, plants, candle and lights in the background, lol. That is so me...*
Even though i did my own covers for my Finding the Sky series, I'm facing having to set up a custom photo shoot for the character image i want to use for the cover of Kenzie Adrift. I'm sure that won't be cheap. I finished my latest round of editing and turned Kenzie Adrift over to my CP. Hey, good news, my long delayed first AuthorTube video will be coming soon. happy writing.
Charles' bookshelf Hey Charles! A photo shoot sounds like fun. I’d love to see a video on how it goes! Looking forward to your authortube channel!
@@NataliaLeigh Thanks for giving me the idea of making a video about the photo shoot when it happens. i haven't even contacted a photographer about it yet, so it could be a while. That said, I hope to have my Kenzie Adrift novel published by mid August if everything goes well. Thanks for all the hard work you put in keeping us going. Happy writing.
I don't want to know any specifics -- because it's really not my business ♡ -- but have you made most of that money back?
Was asking exactly the samd thing myself D:
I asked that to lol
Same question here.
Natalia, that is actually not a bad price. The prices I've seen were all FAR ABOVE what you paid so I'm very much impressed! Great job on the book. It is beautiful!
Thanks for breaking it down, Natalia. It's good to know all of this upfront and shows your dedication to the process. Hoping the process with Pistol Daisy goes smoothly for ya :0)
Thanks Katlyn! Pistol Daisy has been MUCH cheaper so far 💙

Thanks for sharing! You always have such great content which is very helpful!!
You're very welcome Monica! I'm happy to hear you've been enjoying my content 💙
I'm at the halfway point of my book and am beginning to investigate my options so to have an idea of my next step after the book is finished. I already have people who want to beta it and someone helping me look for errors in my writing as I go. But, even though I want to go traditional with my writing, I am aware that indie publishing might be a better option. This video is a huge help.
Thank you for such a open and honest video! So informative.
Glad you enjoyed it Rue!
Great video! I really did enjoy seeing the illustrations in Song of the Dryad when I read it! It was a great touch!
green tokyo That makes me happy to hear! 😍 I really do think the illustrations help bring the book to life 🌱
Very informative video, would love to see those more in depth videos too
Tirill Writes Glad you enjoyed it. I can definitely make those videos in the future.
I'm almost done with the first draft, and I'm getting character art, and merchandise set up to begin promoting while the book is in beta, rewrite, and begins beta II. I'll be doing the beta process three times and then a manuscript critique and the editing process. Itll take about a year, so that's plenty of time to promote, and get the word out as well as prepare for the book launch and the other slightly more fun stuff for the book.
I am a senior always wanted to write & publish a few books was always too busy making a living, now retired and the whole ball game has changed, its much more complicated, expensive and more of a delusion to get your book a best seller only because their are so many authors out there! I am happy with my two new books fiction & non-fiction.
Thank you so much! This helps tremendously! I have two copyrighted books that I am seeking the publishing process for.
@@authorsnation8078 Thank you!
Well done video, lots of good info. The cost in and of itself did not scare me, but that would also be base upon income revenue. I would have liked to hear the outflow versus inflow. I will check out your other videos.
Yes! I would love to see a video regarding kdp why and why not?! Thanks
That cover design is so nice. Even at a distance on RUclips it's very eye catching. Money well spent I'd say!
That was the best and most informative video I have ever seen. You are the best! I will definitely be subscribing and signing up for your newsletter.
Is the "FREE Self-Publishing Budget and Costs PDF" still available to view? I signed up for your newsletter but could really use the list to go over costs. Thanks! Great video! I have saved several of your other videos to watch later. You really break things down into a way most of us new writers can understand.
Thanks, Natalia. This is helpful! I've been in touch with Greg on your website regarding formatting my book. I'm happy I found your company!
Great video! It was all very honest and detailed, as usual.
your book cover is absolutely beautiful
Hi Natalia, I am a new writer in the middle of a book. Thank you for the info which I found so valuable and instantly saved it to my book research playlist to refer back to. I might have missed this off but if going for copy editing would you go for proof reading also and vice versa. Im still trying to work out the difference? Thanks again for the info.
Very interested in hearing why you recommend buying own ISBN #s
I would love a video on how you put in interior pictures or fancy chapter headings and cutsey scene/chapter breaks in your book document 😊.
Also, do you have any good guides for formatting?
Thanks for this video, it was very helpful and interesting ❤.
I plan to make a whole video about how I format in Microsoft Word - inserting photos and backgrounds, scene breaks, basic page setup, etc. :) Keep an eye out for it! I think it'll be quite helpful.
@@NataliaLeigh Yay! I'll definitely look out for that one. Not that I ever miss your videos, but that one is one I've been wanting to see and learn from for a while. Thank you so much Natalia ❤🎁😊
Hope you have an awesome week!
This was really helpful, thank you! I'm so excited to be at the publishing stage!
Love this! How many copies have you sold so far for Song of the Dryad?
please do a video on ISBN
Will do! ☺️
Another great video. Thanks so much! Wondering if you could tell us where you’re taking editing and proof reading classes.
Hi natalia. Found your channel. Love the contents. So I gladly subed and gave you a mighty thumps up. Looking forward to more videos on this same topic but a little more in depth. Thanks. Have a fantastic week.
Thank you for sharing that with us! That actually doesn't seem so scary. There are a few people in my local writing group that have said they spend more than that on their covers! It's nice to be able to see what that looks like.
Registering your IP with the US Copyright Cffice has one advantage. But first...the law stipulates that your creative works (writing, broadcast, song, score, etc), is protected the instant that it is created. (Example: Ever watch TV news and it says, "This broadcast is copyrighted?" That's how they do it. So...the advantage is THIS: I'm a composer and an author. Say someone rips off my song and is making money with it. If I want to sue them, a judge will not take my case if I have not registered my song. So...just because your work is copyrighted by law, it does you no good if someone rips you off anyway! So--if you want to take the chance of going without registering your IP, just don't blab it out there, "I don't register my books/music, etc." Because if someone does hear that and rips off your creative works, you likely have no recourse in a court of law. A judge will say, "It's not registered? Then it's not 'legitimate'". or, you won't be taken seriously, etc. OK...there it is.
Okay, I must know why I should purchase my own ISBN when publishing on KDP and how that works?
song of the dryad has a gorgeous cover!!!
Looked at your editing services l am halfway through formatting my book as l go, l am using word, but might try Google doc's.
Yes, please do an ISBN video!
Your book design is amazing. How did you publish both a hardback and paperback? Most self publishing options don't seem to offer hardback.
Really informative and I love how you deliver information. This is the first video of yours I've seen, but I'll be back for more! Xx
Lucy Cairns Hi Lucy! Welcome to my channel! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and hope to see you around 🥰
Same here
I think im missing something... You got hard copies for yourself to keep or to sell? I know your making money online via ebooks, but what about if someone wants to buy hard copies? Do you keep a physical stash and mail them out yourself? Also if stores want physical copies to sell like barnes and noble, how do they get those copies and how do yall split the money?
Same question here! I've never understood that system (I used to do some work for a small publishing house, but that was before KDP and before Amazon got huge). For instance, if a distributor picks the book up (maybe you have some printed), so who posts it to... let's say Amazon? And should you already have print-on-demand set up from your account, how do they connect? Maybe things aren't that complicated and one can just link the products?
This was helpful, thankyou!X
I really enjoyed your video. It’s one of the best ones I’ve watched. I am writing 30 page reading and writing strategies books for teachers. I am trying to publish them in a series. Where did you take your courses to learn copy editing and proofreading? I would like to take those courses so I understand the process and get rid of my fear of trying any service.
Who did you go with for your book cover artists this time around? Also, why did you not decide to use KDP?
Did I understand you correctly about your fees for copyediting? I think you mentioned that one factor in determining cost is how much editing has to be done. In other words, if a writer's work needs fewer edits your fee is lower? Please clarify, and thanks for the videos.
I watched a vide or two of yours and now you keep coming up in my feed. That's it. I subscribed :) great content.
I would like a video on page numbering in word.
Thank you !
Susan Buckminster You’re welcome Susan! I hope you enjoyed it 😊
Hi Natalia, thank you. Very informative, do you have any video for marketing it as well?
This video is really helpful thank you so much! I was curious what kind of courses you were taking/have taken on editing?
Hi Natalia I was wondering how much your copy editing will cost for a book that is just over 37,000 words?
Hi Shiva! I'd have to do a sample edit to give you a more appropriate quote, but we'd be looking at about $333 for a novel at 37k words.
This video is a big help. Thank you.
Well, there went my future book ever being published. Why? Glad you asked. My piggy bank is squealing like some thief broke in and shot it because it WAS EMPTY! Now I'm sitting here crying, as I look at my pig, and saying to myself; they didn't have to shoot my pig. :( Takes money to make money and that is the one saying that I HATE with a passion. But thanks for sharing your journey and continued successful wishes with your writing/traveling experiences.
My formatter really messed up. Found out when we uploaded the book on Amazon. He didn’t have time to fix it either. Cost me time and $500
Very interesting, Thanks. Greetings from Colombia. The Venezuelan Immigrant writer 🌎
So you spent what like $3 Grand to get everything started and $2 Grand to actually publish the book....that's it? Sign me up! Take my money! If I would've known that writing a book and publishing it yourself was that easy I would've done it years ago. Beautiful content thank you!
Yes, why get your own isbn? Does kindle have some sort of hold over you with their ISBN>
How did you buy your ISBN from Valkyrie, when my library say "If you live in the United States, you can purchase an ISBN through Bowker, which is the only company authorized to administer ISBN numbers in the US"? I, too am interested in Valkyrie.
Excellent. Where can I learn formatting my book in Word? Thanks.
Quite a few books of fiction released in the 70s had interior art. It's a shame one doesn't find it so much nowadays.
Thank you, Natalia. Your videos are always so helpful!
To publish 1 book or a bulk of books I'm confused? But I'm interested as well.
What sort of classes did you take?? I would loveeeeeee to know them so that I could check them out!
Your videos are so amazing and helpful and motivating, thank you! Do you have any videos on finding a publicist on a budget? or any publicists and marketing consultants that you would recommend?
Dang almost 3 grand!? I knew it was expensive to self publish but I didn't know it was *that* much
Madison Peck It doesn’t have to be that much, of course. That’s just what I spent 😉
Thank you, very helpful.
Hello Natalia, Thank you so much for your great breakdown of self-publishing costs. I'm a 2 time author getting ready to self-publish for the first time. Please respond as to why you prefer not to use Amazon’s free ISBNs? I was almost convinced to go with them do to cost. Thank you!
