Tantos are completely under-appreciated (not as popular as they should be), and under-rated (don't get credit for how well they actually perform).

I love them, especially the tantos with a belly. It feels like the best of both worlds, the utilitarianism of pinch grip and the practicalness of the slim belly. I also enjoy the edge’s elbow being longer down the blade, basically a western and eastern amalgamation of a tanto. Either style works for me. And yes you can do a chef’s hold in the front to use the forward edge.

I like Cold Steel Tanto point knives so much that is what the bulk of my blades are. I have the SR1 Lite Tanto, Voyager Large Tanto, Immortal (technically a Tanto), Kobun, Recon Tanto San Mai 3, FGX Balisong Tanto, Tanto Machete, 24 inch Katana Machete, and a Tactical Katana Machete. That is nine in total. I am a sucker for a Cold Steel Tanto Point.

:) a truly unexpected admission SD. You have come all the way around on your tanto position. I remember when they didn't blow your skirt up and to see you clutching the Chrus Reeve tanto and admire it the way I do is super cool. I think every grind on any Chris Reeve knife is artistic and evokes a pleasant emotion. His obsession with detail results in blade shapes whose proportions have symmetry and are as beautiful as effective.

@@ajohnson6416 If you want a tough blade you can really use hard, the SR1 lite is it, but it's a big unit. The Air Lite is my most carried knife in the collection because it's strong enough for anything. I wouldn't recommend it for a beater, it's too nice and there isn't enough handle bushcraft type use. The recon and voyager series are in between and will do any job and carry nice in the pocket. If you don't mind loosing a little space in your pocket I would highly recommend the SR1 lite with any blade profile as an only knife, you'll never feel like you're asking more than it can handle.

I think my 2 favorites are tanto and sheeps foot. They just handle the things I do with them really well, like poking holes, opening packages, chopping, prying, scraping and that thing where you put your body weight over it to cleave something etc. I mean, every geometry and grind has a use, there is a correct tool for every job and I absolutely want my chefs knives to be curved and slicey even though thats my least preferred shape for a general purpose knife.
For a general everyday knife I find that having a straight edge and the point either at the top or at the bottom of the blade really makes them more versatile (at the cost of slicing ofc). Also, the straight edge is just alot easier to maintain. Having the pointiest part in the middle, like on swiss army knives, just makes that point very difficult to utilize for anything useful imo. But again, they all have a purpose.

Another factor is blade length. I mostly carry small knives. And since a tanto is kind of like a knife two distinct edges and you can only use one edge or the other, on a short blade, the main edge just gets too darn short. On the few small tantos I have, I actually find myself using the "front edge" a lot, just because I can reach stuff with it.

Very good review. I also did not like Tanto blades and have greatly appreciated Tanto blades recently. My favorite hard use American tanto knives are made by Cold Steel (favorite Recon-1 Tanto). Especially at the price point. Tanto blades are useful as edc tasks and have been touted as tactical/self-defense knives. I watched the video on the "Evolution of the Wharncliffe" with "The Knife Life" with Michael Janich (blade designer for Spyderco). I understand that the straight edge design of the Wharncliffe utilizes a shorter (2.5" - 3") to perhaps its fullest cutting potential, however, the blade design is being marketed as an excellent self-defense knife blade design i.e., the Spyderco jojimbo. I had commented that the Cold Steel Tanto's i.e., the Recon-1 also has a straight edge and a much stronger tip than the Wharncliffe which makes it more versatile in self-defense situations. The 'reply' I got from "The Knife Life" was . "I personally am not a fan of the American Tantos. The strength of the tip is nice, but its performance both in cutting and thrusting is rather lackluster." Although everyone has their own opinion, likes and dislikes, I am really amazed by this reply. The American Tanto made popular by Cold Steel has proven to me that it is a great slicer/cutter and piercer. I personally am not a fan of the Wharncliffe (and I like bigger folding knives) but I would only consider a Wharncliffe if I wanted to carry a 3 inch or smaller knife for strictly edc tasks.

What's your opinion on reverse tantos? I recently fell in love with their look and features on paper (I can't get my hands on a reasonably priced one in Canada right now that isn't a folder) and they're essentially a wharncliffe with a sturdier edge

Well I am a year late but the Warren cliff is not a good cutter. They don’t understand physics. The hole point of the curved blade is to increase pressure at the point it is touching. A long flat blade distributes force evenly across what it hits actually lowering the pressure.
My guess is that in their cut tests they just pushed a small point deeper and miss interpreted the results.
I own both styles of knives (also have a tanto recon 1). I don’t think it matters much. More about the user.

Yea don't think any Spyderco especially a thin tipped yojimbo is ideal for personal defense I've had a couple Spyderco knives and they are brittle as shit drop it just a couple feet and the tips or blade is broke cold Steel knives are way better in my experience!

The Work Sharp Precision Adjust is an easy way to sharpen Tanto blades.

Look at Vipers tanto (Katla). Razor sharp out of the box, M390 blade, various handles (Mine is TI) and more. Sticky out of the box, but that is normal. My Excuse to flip it 😎

To my big surprise the PM2 Tanto is my everyday carry...
Not the best on the kitchen table 🙄 but so tough everywhere else ...👍

    Hard... To sharpen? Huh?
The reason I dig the tanto so much is because of just how darn simple it is to sharpen! I just slide the thing with minimal mind along my stone! Sure you have to sharpen "twice" if you want a sharp tip, but it takes _nothing_ in terms of technique compared to caring after other blade tips. Don't get my wrong, I love and can sharpen all blades, but the tanto has a special place in my mind.
I honestly don't understand the "tactical" assosciation with it either... It's just a pure utility blade look to me. I think my Bestech Swordfish(spearpoint) is more "tactical" in shape but for some reason is seen as a "friendlier" shape amongst us blade nerds. Tantos fly under the working-class aesthetic much easier than the curvier stuff.

traditional japaneese tantos did not have the secondary tip. that is a cold steel thing from the early 80s that everyone copied... I have many tantos and love them and my cold steel master tanto and kobun are my favourites

My very first serious knife was a Cold Steel Voyager with a Tanto blade back in 1998. My second most recent was an Ultratech in OD with a Tanto. I’ve owned numerous and it’s my favorite blade profile. Including a Recon Tanto, which is basically a sharpened pry bar.

If you want to avoid an altercation -tantos give the impression you like stabby knives for stabby reasons. Like a survival knife with a clip point. They both scream *stabby stabby!

What? No Kizer Beglieter Titanium Tanto on the list. I told myself that I would buy it if it made it on your list.
You were so taken by it it’s beauty. Must have been a flash in the pan?
