Be careful buying a Spyderco Paramilitary 2/Para 3 from Amazon. They seem to have issues (for whatever reason) with fakes entering their supply chain with this series. I think I read somewhere that the PM2 is the most commonly faked knife on the market right now. I received a fake PM2 from them a while back, and I'm by no means the only one. They made good on it without issue, but the fake was pretty darn convincing. If there weren't a ton of videos on how to spot a fake, I might have been fooled since it was my first PM2.

Agreed. Knives are kind of like watches to in that way. You can have a collection of different ones you like for different reasons. If they're all good pieces there's no reason not to swap them out here and there.

Seriously, Jesus... like I flip my Para 3 open a million different ways from all orientations, and closing it is as simple as holding the knife vertically and pressing the lock in and allowing gravity to bring the blade down. Opening is faster than the axis lock of the Benchmade, just press and hold the lock and flick.

You should see other people open my ZT 0450. I told a guy awhile back, just push the flipper tab on the bottom, he did, held his hand over the blade, stopped it, then commenced to open it with both hands. He never even got to see how cool the KVT flipper action is.

Spyderco knives are pretty damn solid and you get more for the money compared to Benchmade.
I personally only have one mid-grade Spyderco, the Manix 2 in S30V and absolutely love it. I carry it alternating with my ZT 0566 with a S35VN blade. Both are badass, strong and sharp as hell. The Spyderco is a better slicer, while the ZT is built like a freaking tank.
Each serves a similar, yet slightly different purpose. It depends on what I am doing and where I am going.
Office, I take the Manix 2.
Weekend running around, I take the ZT 0566.
Either way, you can't have too many great knives.

Why do you have to pick just one? Rotate them out and enjoy both! Mix in some others for even more enjoyment!

I started carrying 2 recently, so I laughed at this. One in each pocket. Thinking of adding a cinch pick for the left side instead.

Yeah idk how the hell he has not figured how to use a spyderco compression lock. He says that when he closes it with his hand the “spring” pinches his hand!!! Lol wtf. Spring!!??? How the hell does this guy not know about the para3!! I’m blown away how he does not know. Obviously he knows quality knives. He has two of the most popular knives in this video. Did he not do research on how the pm3 works and the mechanics of it!! Wtf

If you adjust the tension on the pivot you can close it one handed. The blade can actually just fall closed once pressure to the compression lock is applied. I think if you do that, you'll be even more happy with the PM3. I did that with my PM2 and couldn't be more happy.
If the washers parts around the pivot are cleaned off with some rubbing alcohol then lightly oiled with mineral oil then reassembled you can tighten the pivot screws down all the way and still have smoothly dropping action on the para3 (at least mine was that way) and it came to me with very bad action.
I think it was bought and returned a bit dirty before it got to me.
Still have to keep the compression lock pushed in tho the way he just pushes on it for a second to break loose the lock it won’t fall
I'm a huge PM2 fan. I have the cruwear one and another customized one. Just is perfect fit and for use in my opinion

My father carries several knives, for different uses. He said once "suppose someone takes the one that I am carrying openly, and pulls it on me. Then I reach in my pockets and pull 2 on him. Then somehow loose all 3 of them. That's fine, because I keep a 4th one in my wallet"

I carry a folder with a pocket clip in the usual position and a fixed blade in a horizontal carry kydex sheath tucked under my shirt along my beltline. Backup is never a bad idea.

I carry a Spyderco Para2 after having a Benchmade axis lock. I really prefer the Spydy hole opener to a thumb stud. I had the thumb stud catch on my pocket more than once. The last Benchmade I considered buying actually had a Spydy hole!
You need to clean and tune the action on yours. It should drop closed freely when you release the back lock.
You can open paint cans with the Para 3, when the knife is closed, use the spydie hole spine to pry the can open
Too thick for that you need an edge or a point. Obv shouldn't be using a knife for that tho lol
I just use my fingernails to open brand NEW sealed paint cans.
I have 5 knifes that I rotate through. I can’t pick just one. It takes longer to pick my knife in the morning than my shirt.

I've carried the same SpyderCo knife, clipped on my pocket, for about 30 years. I have 10 or so SpyderCo knives but always carried only the one. Yep, seatbelts and other things have tried to steal it but never succeeded. It's the serrated blade which is now almost a smooth edge. I love it.

When closing the Spyderco hold it the same way you were close to 940 grab the compression lock with your first finger and flick it down the same way you would on the 940 once you get a little bit used to it it will close just as fast and smooth as the 940 I own both and love both thanks for the video

Yup, probably the thing I love most about the compression lock is how easy it is to flip the knife closed. 👍
If you use your index finger, you can open and close a compression lock faster than an axis. In, out or both flicking it back and forth breaks the washers in fast.😁
I just rotate through 30 of my favs. I see no need to limit yourself but that's just me being a knife guy.
I am like you man, I have way to many favorites to just pick one, an they range from real light, short blades to heavy large beast blades, an the price range goes from 15 to an couple hundred bucks. An I may carry up to three with me, an its simply for my own personal enjoyment.
Same here. Switching between multiple knives keeps things fresh and lets you really use each and every knife you own. Rather than only carrying one and the rest never getting used.

You can rotate your carry based on what you’re planning on doing that day. Different knives have different purposes. Yes, the para 3 is an all around great knife though
Sorry but the benchmade only came in handy for him as a prying tool with the occasional screwdriving. There is no need to rotate, that knife is better left in the safety box where it belongs. He can always get one of those pry tools that works as a flathead 🪛
I fully luv my para 3, compression lock,,jus now learning a little bit bout the locking mechanisms,,my question is some of my spiders are from Japan ,and a lil harder to open or not as easy as the spiders from Colorado,,k I need ta watch a vid on what adjustments need to be possibly made to possibly have it open so smoothly as the compression locks,,if that’s possible,is there a huge difference between the locking systems,is one preferred more then the other.?

I realized a long time ago that I have other parts of my body that work just fine for closing my knives when I only have one hand free.
@No you I have 3 Spydercos and they are all to tight for the blade to be dropped of swung closed. I press the compression lock with my middle finger and push the blade down with my index.
Or just apply a bit of oil right down the pivot.

Closing the Para3 one handed advice:
I’ve had a Para2 for years and years. Try pinching it from the back with your thumb and middle finger to where your index finger can then pinch the release. Pinch/open release with index finger and give it a flick, similar to how you were closing the Benchmade and it’ll swing shut with all fingers out of the way.
Makes it much easier to close with a pocket clip on it. Gives you the necessary purchase to close the knife safely; Whether using the flick method or just closing it normally.
For me it's the Otter Mercator. An absolute classic, functional, made and hand fitted in Germany.

What I love about the Spyderco is that it's not a lint catcher! I live up north and often use my knife in cold temperatures, the spyder hole makes use with gloves easy. personally the Spyderco Para 3 is right for me! not to mention it is super grippy when using it with gloves too.
I live in cold climate and disagree. I can both open and close an axis lock with gloves but never close a compression lock. It’s easy to press back the axis lock and wrist flick both open and close the 940. Never ever can I close a compression lock without taking the gloves off.

I have and enjoy both knives. I've never seen that technique or struggle with closing. I use my index finger on the "compression lock" and the blade usually just drops closed with no interference. A simple assist with my thumb ensures closing when the blade doesn't completely shut on its own. Thanks for showing two great knives.
Or his opening technique. Much easier to thimb flick than roll.
Cody, love your use of “the fizz” like James May. The way you close that para 3 scares me. I’ve carried a PM2 for years and the compression lock should allow the knife to drop shut or shut with very slight wrist action. It’s why that family of knives gives me the fizz. Open and shut lightning fast with or without gloves etc. You may just need to open your para 3 and give it a clean and oiling. Your fingers never need to be in the blade path with a compression lock. I have several para 2 and para 3s. I open them both using the compression lock like the axis lock. But all of them definitely required a break in period for the washers in them to wear down just a bit. Also the para 2s have always flipped easier for me. The longer blade gives you more leverage to flip it open and closed. The para 2 is a superior knife to the para 3 anyway.
The benchmade axis lock is the exact same was except better. its designed to close with gravity.
I love my 940-2, and after seeing me use mine for a while (and taking it when she needs it), I ended up getting one for my fiancee as well. We're guaranteed to have a 940 around whenever and wherever we are and it affords us a real piece of mind. (We're no coast for the record)
I carry my Benchmade mini Griptillian every day, I have never looked back.
I have both as well. 940-2 and the Para 3. I think they nailed the size with the 940. It’s so slim in the pocket. I rotate mine and carry based on what I’m wearing. I love the axis lock for the one handed operation ease. There is just something about the para 3 that draws me to it though. I love them both. I also have a Benchmade mini grip in the rotation as well. My Spydie is probably my favorite if I had to pick. But I think the 940 might be the most overall close to perfectly designed knife I’ve ever used.
I’m absolutely in love with my Benchmade Griptillion i think it’s just as good as the the more “premium” knifes

I like the BM but when it comes down to it I trust the compression lock more than omega springs.
Over a decade of using BM axis lock knives daily, including mini grips, bugout, and osborne, never had any omega spring failure or problems
great video. I have been daily carrying a PM2 for 3 + years i think. Carried it through my career as an arborist. It's fallen out of trees, been buried for days under wet wood chips, just beat to hell. The only issue it ever gave me was my fault. snapped off the tip a few months ago. I definitely just got complacent and like so many of us do, it was the closest pry tool I had lol. I ended up taking steel from the spine instead of the blade side. about a quarter of an inch from the broken tip, I just rounded the spine over to a new broader tip. I actually like it better than the sharper tip. I keep my pivot tuned so that I can one hand flick open and close with the back lock. I'm just used to it. After all these years I think it's abou time to get her some new scales. The original G10 is still working but I have defiantly started to wear them smooth in parts. The 940 is also a fantastic daily. I have a friend that got his when i got my PM2. We just stopped arguing eventually lol.

Two knives in urban settings is overkill, I carry my para 2 in one pocket and leatherman charge in the other.
Na man, even in urban settings you could break a knife and need back up. 2 knives is perfectly acceptable in any setting. I used 3 knifes at my kids birthday parties. One to cut the meat, one for cake. One for presents. We forgot to grab kitchen knives on the way out so me being me I had multiple knives just by my own nature.
Instead of two knifes one of these and a leatherman model (I use the classic wave and 940) would be much, much more effective. Another sharp blade and all the other tools that come along with it.
I carry 2. A nice knife and a cheapo knife, just in case I need to do something awful to a knife.

My personal preference in Spyderco is the Para 2 also love the military (no para). In the market for a Benchmade 940 Osborn carbon fiber, really like the automatic version also. Truth be told I need to enter a 12 step program.

I owned a carbon fiber and frankly it isnt all it’s cracked up to be. It has weird weight and the satin feel of the aluminum scales are much more to my liking
Been carrying a Spyderco since 1986 when I was first issued one in the USAF. The one handed operation beats anyone's attempt. I do have several different knives (Benchmade, Gerber, Buck and my first knife from dad the Old Timer tri-blade). The smooth flat finish fits great in any pocket and does not catch like the "thumb nub" on every other assist knife. The other ones have their own purpose/use but my EDC will always be a Spyderco. Welcome to the Spyderco family...

I love my Para 3, but I love flippers probably a bit more, so the Spyderco Mantra 3 was a perfect choice for me. It has a smaller profile but longer cutting edge. Plus it has carbon fiber texture on scales. More fun to open. Para 3 is still a badass EDC knife though. P.S. I can open my Para 3 five different ways n always close one handed. Fun to learn.
I can do 6 different finger flicks, plus all the standard slow roll, thumb flick open etc etc
Spyderco will always reign supreme over Benchmade. Not only are they a family business, but Sal and Eric are class acts. Their quality control, attention to detail and the fact that they're always experimenting with better stainless steels puts them at the top of the knife game.
Aesthetics wise I like Benchmade's designs more, but you're right that Spyderco has way better QC and steel selection. Better heat treatment.

I have both and benchmade is my go to. The axis lock is the best feature and also find the spiderco too wide for many of my pockets when I also keep wallet in front right with my knife. I live near Golden, so wish I liked them as much since I could keep my money more local.
I got a 940 then got the pm2 and the 940 has sat in my bedside table ever sense. its got to be one of the best designed knives ever. the ergos on it are amazing with jimping in all the right spots. I use to always want that next knife but I don't think id want to edc anything else and it took me forever to buy a syderco because I just thought they were ugly.
Spyderco knives are not good looking but there's something about the compression lock I like. Just one more (as far as I am aware part than a liner lock but stronger.
To open a paint can with the Spyderco: knife in the closed position use the Hump of the spine behind/on top of the spyderhole as a pry-lever.

Good point on the pocket clip..I recently lost my shot show limited edition mini adamas at work sadly….but i just purchased the 940-1 (my dream edc) an i will definitely be removing the pocket clip. Thanks for that tip buddy! And great comparison i still love to 940 for me. The mini adamas was an absolute beast an a surprisingly great edc as well.

Nice review. I pulled the trigger on a Para 3 Lightweight last night and feel this could be 'the one' for me. I've been carrying the Benchmade Bugout for several months, and though it's a great knife, I probably feel just how you do with your Osborne. Looking forward to getting my PM3 and putting it through its paces! Glad to be a new subscriber to your channel :)
Sometimes a thing just feels right...even when others may scoff. I have a CRKT flipper that I feel that way about. It isn't expensive or premium in any regard but it feels right when I hold it and does what I need it to do for day to day tasks. I guess I am not a "true" knife guy either since I carry it daily and even went so far as to buy a second as a backup if something happens to the one I carry. Switched to the Leatherman Skeletool CX. I know its not a dedicated knife but its just so useful, where as carrying a dedicated knife just doesn't get it done anymore for myself.
I liked your thoughts on no pocket clips...I’ve been starting to carry stuff either in a belt sheath or just in pocket too. My grandpa always carried his knife one of those ways!

I totally get it!! Great video! I have had numerous Benchmade knives over the years. Love, love love them! However, I recently had the pleasure of meeting a salesman at a store who had a Spyderco paramilitary. He let me play with it and I instantly fell in live with the knife. Such a pleasurable experience! I have to have one! Btw, I’m a long time fan of wranglerstar, have learned a lot from you and truly enjoy your message. Thank you and please keep the videos coming!
Great video, I EDC a Spyderco Para Military 2 Emerson edition which is a Badeops exclusive and am absolutely convinced it's the best designed knife ever. The Emerson wave only makes sense if you use the pocket clip as designed so may not be for you but still worth checking out.

One of my favorite EDC knives is a single blade 50-year old Case that I got from my granddad. It's worn, thin and barely holds an edge anymore, but something about it works for me.
Just bought a Benchmade Barrage, I absolutely love it. Opening and closing it gets addicting.

I have carried a Spyderco for 30 years. First a Delica with full serrated blade and then an Endura with 50/50 blade for the last 28 of those years. I have a few specialty Spydercos as well but never EDC them.
I had a lapse of sensibility and broke the tip off the Endura a while ago so I just retired it and replaced it with a full serrated Caribbean Salt. Great knife brand.
I've had a 940 for a good many years (15 or so). I do have to say that the blade geometry on it is a bit thick for trying to slice through something with substance. I haven't tried to pry much with it, but it seems much more like a gentleman's folder than a hard use blade... and for that, I really miss my 921 Switchback (gave it to a friend a decade ago).
Most of my daily drivers are Spyderco. The 2 I generally have on me is a fully serrated Endura and a plain Manix 2 XL. I have plenty of others (Centofante 4, Native, Native Chief, Endura plain in ZDP-189, Honeybee, Harpy, Captain & Matriarch 2) but those two are the workhorses I keep coming back to.
A glass of Jameson Black Barrel and a discussion of knives is a great pairing.
I love my Osborne, but if I had to pick one knife for the rest of my life it would be my Para 2. IMO, Spyderco offers the best bang for your buck.

Mine is a Osbourne 940-1 Carbon fiber. Blue spacers. So fast and easy to open. Totally melts away in the pocket, but good point on the pocket clip. That's how I lost my last one.

The Para 2 would've been a much better comparison as far as size goes and it's a better knife imo than the Para 3 just due to size and Aesthetics
If you ever want a lightweight para 3, then get the cousin to it, the delica 2. It's not as stout as para 3, but, it's sooo light and you may like the lock on it better. Sometimes I panic until I get my hand in my pocket, because I think I forgot it, but, it is actually in my pocket, I just didn't notice it.
Its a compression lock and you can use it like you do the axis lock hold it in swing open and then push in and swing closed its that simple i love both knives i have both
I open paint cans with my spyderco. Keep the knife closed and use the back of the spider hole to get under the lip of the lid. Thats actually why I carry the spyderco, because for a long time most of the work I did was painting.

I’m currently carrying Kershaw Blur, Tanto. Use it everyday with one hand operation that is like second nature.
I’m a Para 3 guy. Mines the s30v. You can also flip open the knife just like the axis lock by holding down the compression lock and flipping your wrist.
My EDC has been a Spyderco Sage 1 Liner lock with Carbon Fiber scales that I just love! That CPM S30V stands up to anything I throw at it and stays SHARP! Knowing you, Wranglerstar, I just recently got one you should check out, but it's definitely NOT an EDC, and that's the Hoback Husky by Jake Hoback. This thing is a beast! It's 9.25" open and weighs in at a "Husky" 11.7 oz. Titanium frame, Micarta handle, flipper opener, just one helluva piece!
Late to the game here, but pinch the liner lock with your index and thumb and the blade will fall shut. Do so while holding the rest of the knife with your palm/pinky and ring finger.
This way, you do not need to loose grip of the knife and you can close with one hand.
exactly. but you also have to keep you knife well maintained and oiled. He may not have that level of action

I have a spyderco delica 4 stainless steel handles, the absolute most durable knife I have ever had. It has a thick spine, but fine enough edge to trust it to be reliable. I pick it up and feel secure in the fact that I know this knife will always be able to trust it to get any job done.

I haven’t ever thought of an EDC knife, and that is what got me started. I am so glad that you explained the best features of each, and why that was important. Better though is your explanation of why to have an EDC knife, and I could really feel your passion for each of those knives and knives in general
Not only have I subscribed, but now I will start looking seriously at knives for the first time in my life to have my own reliable.
From carrying a pm2 for almost 2 years now, I've always used a very similar closing technique that you use for your benchmade. Simple pinch the lock with my index finger and swing it shut with my wrist. I'm unsure if it would be possible as the para 3 is smaller but I hope this helped.
I do the same, but it's important that the pivot is loose enough, rotates or drops freely (I'm not a knife pro, forgive me if I don't know the right terminology)... while still tight enough not to loosen on its own (or use locktite).
If it's too tight, you need to apply some force to close the blade. Gravity itself won't allow it to close.
It looks like WS had his pivot pretty tight, which makes sense if he's keeping it in his pocket without a clip. Also, if you are going to loosen the pivot so it can drop freely, I suggest keeping the tip down when using the clip. I kept it tip up for a few months and a couple times reached in my pocket to find an exposed blade. One of those times I cut myself a bit, so since then I've kept it tip down.

@wranglerstar I carried the 940 for years and still go back to it. There's an option you might love and not many people know about. The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Emerson. It's only slightly bigger than the 940 and has added weight but that weight actually helps you feel it in your pocket without weighing you down. It's got a thicker blade than the standard so you can use it to pry pretty much anything. And it has the classic Emerson hook so when you take it out of your pocket a certain way the blade will open coming out of the pocket ready to use (safely). I've never had the clip snag and the knife fall out either. At first it looks hideous to me but it's a perfect combination of rugged, usable, and the easiest knife ever to deploy because of the Emerson collaboration.
That pocket clip advice is real solid.
I had a brand new never used ZT 0450 catch on a seat belt as I was getting out of my car at a convenience store.

Used quite a few knifes and the "Real Steel H5 Gerfalcon" is my knife of choice.

My $450 customized and reground Elmax para 2 has been my go to knife for years. I'll carry one of many other knives I own every now and then to get enjoyment of something new but nothing beats the cutting action of a knife ground to 0.005 bte. Plus customized scales, clip and hardware make it look and feel so much better than stock. 4v para 3, Smock (both customized as well) and a Benchmade Bugout(if you can call it a Benchmade with a Vanax SC reblade, Aramis custom scales, clip and hardware. Only thing stock are the washers and omega springs) are my other go to knives.
i have both, i use Para Military 2 or 3 at work and the 940 most other times. 940 more fun to play with, i love flipping blade open and close with axis lock. if i had to only pick one it would be my cf 940 hands down. or any of my 940s i have 4, also have multiple Para Military's. you may want to sharpen your 940, mine cuts food just fine.
Another option: If you like the "sypder hole" and you don't want to give up the axis lock, I recommend taking a look at the Benchmade Griptillian 550-1. Benchmade licensed the spyder hole and created a great knife.

One hand close: depress lock mechanism with your index finger and fling the knife to close the blade. Takes some practice.
Only about 30 seconds of practice. It is that easy. I think alot of people just dont think to use index for lock button. But its perfect method.
Live 15min from Benchmade. I've carried them from Army to Police to Security work 23yrs. I finally made the move this year to get the Para 3 and I really love it.
It's not Oregon pride made? And I can't get it repaired or sharpened free anymore but the Spyderco P3 has been a great EDC addition.
I have the Benchmade mini griptillian 555-1 with the cpm-20cv. It has the "spidey hole" but isn't as wide where the hole is on the Spiderco. I really like the hole with the axis lock. I know Spiderco has one with an axis lock, they call it a bearing lock, but I like using the benchmade lock much more.
The way he opens and closes that para3 is triggering me. Lol
I lost interest in the video when I saw he can barely close either knife with one hand. His opinion is worthless now.

It's an acquired taste. I was turned off by Spyderco at first, but now it's my favorite brand.
Nice review. I have lost 2 knives due to the clip catching on my seatbelt and falling out of the vehicle. That last one was my 940 Osborne! I lost it in Yreka, CA two years ago and miss it dearly.
while i carry the paramilitary 2 the 3 has always been on my radar, i just like a bigger knife. also try just letting the knife blade drop with your hand out of the way to close the spiderco.
At first glance, from the perspective of an “older man”, I recognize that one of these knives caters to the decreased motor function that time and gravity steals from the wise.

for the spyerco back liner, if you hold the lock the blade should drop shut, just like the axis lock.
I like your thoughtful reviews because I feel they are genuinely your views. I love Benchmade knives and own 6 of them. I am not adverse to a composite handle if it feels integral to the knife. I have a couple of Benchmades that I rarely carry because they do not pass the how does it feel in day to day use quality perception. Too thin and flexible or so light that the knife lacks a weight and balance that make it a keeper. I am a watch and knife guy like you. Always looking for the perfect knife. My solution is to continue to rotate my collection and see what continually speaks to me.
My favorite is the Benchmade Bone Collector knives of which I have the small uniform blade and the large smooth and serrogated blade. Both are great knives that in day to day use are among the best, but the smaller more compact size has lead me to carry the smaller non-serrogated bone collector griptillian. I have about 40 knives all of excellent quality, ranging from ZTs, Benchmade, and Buck to Brother of Bushcraft fixed blades. Variety and utility is the key to selecting the right tool for the job. I have my favorites, but all in my collection have their place in my rotation.
I think it would be fair to look at some of the cold steel premium EDC knives

😂😂😂 I'm 6ft 3 and do the same with my Rat 1 ...LOL Here in Oregon we have pretty relaxed knife laws but, almost 95% of all buildings have signs now that say no "weapons" allowed. Its getting a bit silly, its almost like living in the U.K in some states I can't imagine not being able to wear a belt knife in public .
@@Airik1111bibles I live in the UK, its pretty strict here but they aren't silly. I think its something like 4" blade for a folding knife and a bit less than that for a fixed blade.
But we definitely don't have butch blokes playing with knives all the time 😂

Paramilitary 2 > 3, i can flick the PM2 open/close with that lock (forget the name, not for left handed people). It’s similar to the axis lock in the regard once you press it ….the blade swings freely.

Do it. Axis lock beats the hell out of liner lock. But I'm a Benchmade guy.....lol.
