    Nice list. I can roll with you on putting the Hinderer XM-18 at #3. Shiro are top notch knives after all. BUT...no Sebenza on the list?? I mean, that's almost criminal. Most enthusiasts, notice I didn't say collectors...put Hinderer, Chris Reeve, Strider (no particular order) as the holy trinity of knives. I am one of those people. Sure, there are "nicer" knives. But those 3 encompass all there is to love about knives.

    I agree with a lot of your choices…the ranking is another thing but I also respect your overall feel about it…you know I owned better half of these knives but recently sold them all, except for Spyderco Kapara, Civivi Elementum and Spyderco Police…I also didnt sell even one Victorinox knife or Opinel knife…ive actually gone through the journey of finding the best knife for me and I came to realize i dont want my folding knife to be thick as hell in stock and TBE…for prying I have fixed blades, for sliciness I have Opinel…opinels are also just so much more customizable than most of the knives you mentioned…you get 0.007” TBE which is just a dream…i spent so much money on high end knives...man i regret it now cause the thrill of owning them was only temporary and soon it became an unhealthy addiction…Rocksteads cant even be used to nicely cut through an apple, I mean what do you actually pay 1500$ in such a knife…design, quality but utility not so much…i sold it all and took my girlfriend for a premium vacation instead…the best choice i ever made

    • @evanacey1414

      @lakylaky2008 2 года назад +2

      @@evanacey1414 do you actually use your knives? If you did, you would perhaps understand my side of the argument…its not the steel or brand that cuts, its the geometry and TBE…Shiros are like 0.015” behind the edge, Hinderers like 0.028”…now compare it to Opinel, you get 0.007” TBE, its a noticably better slicer than Shirogorov, I know that because i had owned 3 Shiros and actually used them for hard work…

If you want the best edge...wet stones . ..but you're gonna spend time and money. The difference between a wet stone edge and this device is maybe 5-10 percent. No one will ever notice. However.. make sure you don't take off too much material from your knife!

    1980-81 3 dot Buck 110 with the better 440C steel which was the last time they used it. I have some of the blades on this list and all of these "super duper" steel knives sit in a box collecting dust. The thicker, squared off bolster 3 dot 110 is the best version Buck ever made. It's also the masculine version and what the 110 should look like. It's the only blade you'll need. Reason being, easy to sharpen to a razor blade, no moving parts, no internal springs, no screws or a pocket clip that destroys pockets. Just an all metal handle and a very strong lock back with a spring bar. And I'll have to add (just for the hell of it) it has killed Grizzlies before. The best part, I just scored my third one for a little more than $40 in perfect condition. Runner up I would add the Gerber 06 Manual with S30V or the Benchmade Ritter Griptilian M390 with AWT aluminum handles and maybe the Adamas 275. I just don't see the point in purchasing knives that cost as much as guns.

They had just gotten it and after some research I snagged it.

    I've been carrying my Spyderco Military Model since '08.
    Before that, was the Benchmade AFCK.
    (Similar design, but the ergonomics were a bit off.)
    Dude, I'm picky about my folding blades.
    Here's a few criteria:
    1) must have lanyard hole.
    2) must carry tip-down.
    3) blade hole or finger flipper. No thumb studs.
    4) made in America
    You'd be amazed at what prevents me from purchasing every sharp thing I see.

    Please forgive my ignorance.
    I was looking at buying a pocket knife on Amazon, and afterwards I got this video suggestion here on RUclips. The algorithm at work.
    I appreciate good design on anything so I understand paying for quality.
    I guess you’re a collector, this is a hobby as much an anything, but can you explain to me what you use these knives for day to day, and also why you own so many.
    Going by this video I am picturing knifes falling out of every pocket, bag, glove box, jacket and drawer in your life…
    Please don’t take my comment as a negative, I’m just trying to understand and am curious.
    I live in Ireland and EDC isn’t a thing at all here.
    The closest anyone would come to carrying a knife with them would be a leatherman or similar multi tool . And even then only if they worked in a trade, carpentry, building etc…
    Thanks for reading this and I appreciate any replies.

    In reference to the rockstead and maybe all "overpriced" knives: what people don't realize is that extra cost does not often come from materials but from quality control. I work in quality control as a QA Lab Tech. Higher quality control means more expensive equipment capable of a higher degree of accuracy, more discarded cutting tools as they are exchanged more frequently because as they wear the accuracy is decreased, and more product being rejected for scrap in general. This is where we start discussing if it's worth it and as MC says it's entirely a personal choice

    • @johnnyboy1586
      @johnnyboy1586 2 года назад +1

      Why then does knives like civivi or ruike have better overall fit and Finnish than the over priced Benchmade?

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  2 года назад +3

      1. They don't. That's a pretty exaggerated statement.
      2. Civivi/Ruike are made in China (dramatically lower labor costs) and generally are utilizing lesser materials, especially when it comes to steel.
      Benchmades are expensive, but not "overpriced" just because they cost more than Civivi/Ruike knives. Now you have the correct information 👍

    That's a great list. I haven't handled many of the knives on it, and I'm just edging my way back into knife collecting after selling everything & spending a few years away from most of the knife 'scene'; but your taste in knives is (nearly) impeccable. You must have one hell of a collection.
    The folders I miss the most were the ones I sold last (naturally): my Shirogorovs. I had two F95s & an F3. Fairly basic, no Custom Division awesomeness, but they felt like folding knife perfection to me. I liked my Sebenza (never owned an Umnumzaan), I liked my Hinderers (& I liked my original 0392), but I fucking loved those Shirogorov blades. That Shiro Quantum & the new F3 look amazing, and the collaborations with makers like Tom Mayo & RJ Martin look outstanding... just really expensive.

      collecting antique knives is a lot more interesting in the long-term than collecting modern precision folders that all kind of look alike and do the same things. Obviously if you got rid of everything and lost interest in knives then the modern folders werent doing much for you.

    Great list! I’m glad I have a few of the lower ranked blades. Maybe someday get my hands on some of those higher premium knives.

    These knives are interesting and show some differences on our own requirements (for example I want my knives one handed ambidextrous). However, I honestly think leaving off the Benchmade 710 off the list is just a miss. It really helped make the modern EDC knife seen as well as being the first Axis lock. Just my thoughts.

    I have an XM-18 3.5 and have carried it only a few times. It would be a better knife if it didn’t have the aggressive jimping by the flipper tab.

    I liked this list. My only suggestion would be maybe to make a series out of it. 5 videos one for each of your tiers. Could allow you to take your time explaining your favorite knives, but I still like the quick delivery.

    I have to throw my hat in the ring for Kizer. I think the Sheepdog and the Gemini are two of the best designs we've seen in a long time, especially on knives that aren't running you hundreds of dollars. The Gemini in particular is fantastic, being a Ray Laconico design, and the Gemini is just a production version of his custom Gemini that he put out. They recently released a version with contoured micarta handle scales, and it's one of the most comfortable, dextrous knives I've ever held.

    My favorite ZT is the Todd Rexford zt0801 but I'm talking about version 1 with the 2 piece full titanium and elmax blade steel. They did make a version in m390 but it's crazy expensive
