I've been a carpenter for almost 40 years. Always use the right tool for the right job if it breaks or bends it means you're not using it properly. If people use a Spyderco as a pry bar knowing in advance that it has a thin tip obviously it's going to break. Every tool is designed for a certain job use it properly and it will not fail you. In 40 years the only tools that ever got broken are the ones that I loaned to my friends who don't know how to use tools properly.
I had a super in boston ask to borrow my knife(spiderco pm2) i hand it to him turn around , then i here scrapping like sounds, i turn to see he’s trying to pry a locked door open with it! Fucked up my tip, some people? Now if someone ask me for my knife i ask what there plan for it is. Lol
Gonna disagree with you. Tools and/or metal will flex, bend and break all the time. Most of the time it's metal fatigue or just poorly made metal that contained flaws. The ultimate issue is that you market a item to be tough or as well as all you need whether as a EDC or in a survival situation then the product should be able to handle abuse.
The best part about the 940 is that it is REALLY light and dissappears in the pocket very well despite it being a bit on the longer side. The coating on the aluminum scales is also nice feeling.
Honestly the Osborne 940 grew on me the more I used it. At first it wasn’t my favorite. Now, all these years later it doesn’t leave my side. EDC classic.
And yeah 940 is top dog. Designed by a real rancher. Enough said. That reverse tanto with that reinforced tip is the best looking blade ever imo & it can take a beating most blades can’t take. Can’t tell you how much heavy prying I’ve done with my 940 & never broke. I tried carrying a pm2 & broke the tip in like the first 2 weeks of carrying it lol got my 940 and that’s all I need. I have much much more expensive knives but none can take the 940 out my pocket.
ANNNNND YOU'RE A PASTOR!!! NICE! I thought that Hebrews verse was a cool one there on your 940. I went through a period where I was a skeptic when I was younger, but there is something radically cool that happens to your life when you accept Jesus and don't look back. LOL..like reckless abandon for God. Like you don't just know about God, or read about stories of people who knew Him, you experience Him in your own life. That's a beautiful thing. I can't speak for others, but God radically came into my life at a whole other level when I started helping start a church and going to small groups. When I first met my pastor I heard him tell me "If you wanna see God work in your life...serve". I did NOT want to hear that. I thought he was just trying to talk me into helping out because he needed people...and that COULD have been part of it.....but he wasn't kidding. The atmosphere and grace on my life is thick and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I won't lie, people aren't always the easiest to deal with, but I desire the power of God and blessing on my life so much that I walk through it and try to serve as faithfully as I can and it's always worth it. Jesus is the best thing that's ever happened to me.
I appreciate the brotherly Christian blessings at the end of your videos. Thanks for that RevHiker. The knives: You mentioned opening paint cans with the tip of you Spyderco. Try using the thumb hole (closed blade) to open paint cans. Been doing it for years and years. The round tomb hole on the blade in closed position will open paints cans fast. Thanks Rev!
Just carry something like the Gerber EAB so you can have a folding/locking tiny box cutter on you too, so you won't have to eat up your good steel on the menial tasks
@@inhalefarts facts 😂 I used to work at a warehouse where I had to cut cardboard and even my m390/20cv knives will dull in one day cutting cardboard. Definitely shouldn't be using a good knife for cutting cardboard jobs
@@inhalefarts yep i agree I've never understood people cutting cardboard with their knives. I can understand people doing reviews or edge retention tests using it but I see comments from people saying they use their knives for it daily. If you're cutting more than 1-2 ft of cardboard a month get a damn utitly knife with disposable razor blades is my thought. But hey if they wanna sharpen their knives that much and waste $ by eating up their expensive blades more power to the stupid.
I was at the store yesterday and I checked so many 940 variants. They were beautiful. Then I asked for a PM2 and a Para3. The Para3 felt small for me, just like the 940. The store showed me a Griptilian with hole. I like the hole. It became comparable with the PM2. After scrutinizing both, I was torn, but I ended up choosing the PM2. I just like the way it feels. My EDC knife is a Kershaw Funxion EMT, and the blade (saber) is similar to the Griptilian. That’s another reason I chose the PM2 so that I can have a flat blade. Now I carry 2 knives, the PM2 and the Funxion. I might get a very small OTF soon. Thank you for your video. I’m a Marine and a first responder.
I have both and love them both but see them as quite different. Even though both are buttery smooth the 940 edges out the PM2 in how fast it deploys and closes with ease. My 940 has become my Sunday knife...it’s form is more suitable for pocket carry in my church pants it’s more eloquent...to me more of a gentlemen’s knife. However the PM2 is my everyday carry the other 6 days due to the confidence I have with it in hand for larger tasks as well as small tasks. Both are amazing!
Thank you for the inspirational and devotional message in the end. It made my evening. God bless you and keep you healthy and safe. As much as I had enjoyed your review of the knives, I got blessed with the last piece of the message. I am a baptized believer and thank God for His mercy and grace daily.
I own both…I own many Spydercos and Benchmades. Here are the main differences that make an *actual* impact on your experience. First of all, the Spydercos are superior cutting tools, period. Their blade shapes and edge geometries are just better. They also come in much better steels…if you like a model, chances are you can find it in Cruwear, m4 or S110v. Lastly, Spydercos have very “blade focused” ergonomics…the blade itself sort of becomes part of your hand while you use it. Benchmades feel slightly more luxury. They’re very smooth and satisfying to operate but they still feel sturdy and capable. If you like to choke back, a Benchmade is probably what you’re looking for…their ergonomic is more “I’m holding this knife” than “this knife is an extension of my hand”. Lastly, Benchmade makes the most of its size. The 940, mini grip, etc. are all incredibly efficient. They make the most of their scales by fitting a ton of blade length into a small package.
@@EDCandLace For sure…I feel like benchmade’s s30v is a bit easier to get *ultra* sharp on a bench stone. But other than that, the cruwear and m4 on my shamans, etc. is undoubtedly better than my adamas or 560. I think spyderco just has more experience with tool steels since they use them so much more often. I also like that they don’t automatically coat every tool steel.
Friend, I truly love the way you finish the video off, there’s nothing like Grace the gift that keeps giving. The gift that’s so simple people won’t accept it.
@@Phaminator525 the only thing the PM2 beats the 940 in is cutting vegetables! I don’t know about you, but I use my knives at work(interior/exterior paint, drywall, and stucco) and wouldn’t even consider using them on food preparation.
Amen, brother. Good review and I appreciate your encouragement. God is grace to us. The more we open to God the more we partake of His grace and can extend grace to others.
Great and honest review! I have a 940 and love it. But at times I think I could really like the Para 3. Different situations could determine which one I bring that day. If I could only have one, it would be the 940. But just maybe I can do both. Great point at the end. You don’t know what others are dealing with. Keep an open mind. You would be shocked at what some people can hide or deal with. At the same time you can be shocked with what people do for no reason. I just try to be the best person I can. But I’m not perfect either.
Picked up a 940-2 a few days ago to replace a PM2 as an EDC. While I liked the PM2, it is too bulky due to the handle shape and length, as well as the Spyderco hole in the blade. The 940-2 is a lot slimmer and lighter, and it has pretty much the same blade length with a much stronger tip that's still sharp enough to pierce or drill a hole.
Having 4 para 2's and 1 940-01 I can say personally without a doubt I'll take the Spyderco everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. I cant think of a single thing Benchmade physically did better than Spyderco. Maybe the warranty is better but that's a good thing since you're way more likely to need it in the first place.
Idk?, i have a para 3, 2pm2’s a total of 4 in total I have owned, & 2 940’s currently both -1 &-2, spyderco’s warranty is worthless & no they do not come perfect from factory it’s a shame their warranty that is currently in place does not honor factory flaws as long as it does not flaw the working design albeit opening/closeing & pivot anything other than that spyderco feels every single 1 of the knives that come from their facility is flawless, that said spydercos flaw is that mindset unfortunetly, I sent a mini grip in pieces to benchmade w/ a quarter of the blade Length broken off, all I paid was something like $30-$40 to replace the knife blade for a completely new 1 & they corrected their wrongs & sent the knife back put together new blade in perfect grind tackt , can spyderco do that ? Go fucc urself is spydercos awnser, ppl don’t realize that ppl themselves is a incorrect use that’s spydercos problem
I bought one Benchmade. It works fine but was underwhelming. At half its price, I would have been happy with it. I bought one Spyderco and found it worked better for me than any folder I’d had before. If I want hard use? I’ll grab a fixed blade with sturdy tip and tough steel. I won’t use a folder, especially an expensive one.
Watched for the knives, stayed for the ending. Thank you for putting that in your video it means alot to me. Its amazing how God can use people in all sorts of ways. Keep the motivation coming.
I never 'warmed' to the PM2. It's a truly excellent product (and I do have other Spyderco's) but I found that the hype didn't live up to it. In fact I gave mine to my son and don't miss it at all. I bought the Shaman as a replacement for my PM2 (before the prices went up) and although it's another great folder, it's way too heavy for EDC use. The standard 940 ticks all the boxes for me and I'm thinking of trading my Shaman for a second 940 if I can get a good deal...
Yeah, I love the PM2 but find it a bit heavy for EDC. Now the Native 5, in FRN is just about perfect. Great weight, great cutting tool, very comfortable in the hand. I'd refer a G10 version, and am hoping to get one soon.
I prefer the pm2 personally. I like the larger handle and it fits my hand better. And personally when I’m at work I’ve got a second knife on my radio strap I use to pry stuff up such as prying up pins out of door hinges

The ergonomics on the PM2 are far superior, especially in wet conditions and with gloves on. The tall full flat grind allows the PM2 to be thinner behind the edge, and if used in a self defense role, the wider blade creates a larger wound for the same depth.
True, the pm2 is a much better cutter but for self defense I would use the 940 just because of how robust it is. Also the Benchmade is faster to deploy in a self defense situation
This was a solid comparison! I am inclined to agree with you on the 940. However I have found that benchmade hardware is less likely to strip as well. I've had PM 2 hardware strip out on me, while the benchmade screws have yet to show any signs of wear or stripping thus far.
Man what a great video. I am looking at these 2 knives and can't decide on which one to get. Most of all, I enjoyed the end of your video when you offered the hope only found in Jesus! I am thankful there are still people willing to share Jesus like you are doing! Keep up the great work, looking forward to more great videos!
Good Video, I lost my 940 recently (I know sucks!) I ended up getting a Spiderco PM2 to replace it. it's a tough call between these 2 they are both great in different ways.
I own both of these knives. I have found the standard spyderco endura in vg 10 outperforms both of these. I know this is gonna butt hurt someone but out of all my knives the only ones I have had problems with are benchmade and kershaw. Pains me to ok say that as I think the 940 is the sexiest looking knife there is but I had to send it to benchmade twice to be fixed. But it is like you said benchmade is on point with warranty work.
@@Liz-em8mw yes sir i have i still prefer a spyderco jus my preferce , the wear factor on this 940 is an issue for me as well after a few months & the knife looks 10yrs old .
Great video! I’m a benchmade man but I got my first spyderco recently the micarta pm2 in cruwear. I thank you for your non bias attitude you are fair. And thank you for your encouraging word pastor. God bless.
neat vid mate and i might be an old aussie construction boilermaker but i have to say thank you for your great message at the end of this tale .god bless you and all our fellow Christians
I have and love both of these knives. I consider the 940 to be a better (and more "elegant") EDC for those of us who work in an office environment or when dressed up a bit for work or evening. That being said, the PM2 is a my choice for my weekend or outside activity carry.
Just got a 940BK. It's a great knife, but I still carry my Manix 2s more. They may be big and ugly, but the Manix 2 fits my hand so well that I can't help but take one with me every day. Manix 2 for life!
Great video my friend. While I love the ffg and blade shape of the PM2 I more often carry my 940 for edc because the tip is just too fine on the PM2. I snapped one once and now I'm nervous to use it for edc as a tradesman. And the compression lock is not great for us lefties as you pointed out. Both great knives though.
Im just a random dude on the internet. Having said that... all cardboard cutting tests are dumb. I have 5 dollar throw away blades that will blow away both of these blades. If you cant sharpen your knives better than factory you arent a knife enthusiast.
I love pm2s more but the 940 has blade ergos that let the cardboard crowd a little faster and more even....but the pm2 would technically slice most foods better except cheese bricks...then the 940 lol
I have a few pm2s and a few p3s and I actually prefer them to my 940. I also like that they occasionally come along in different steels. I have a p3 in s35vn, s110v, and maxamet is my newest for example. While I do keep my 940 in my collection, it’s not one that i carry all the time. Also you could go ahead and get a pm2 and a leatherman for your paint can prying needs (which I literally do because you can’t beat a leatherman for really hard stuff) and you’ll still have some money left over. All jokes aside, great video!
You're probably right. The right handed version is a pain to close for me. My biggest problem is the thin tip and the tendency to chip and break of a small portion of the tip... but for a lot of people it suits them perfectly. Cant deny it's a winning design and slices like no ones business
Spyderco yes, benchmade, depends on if CQ had their coffee that morning. Coming from someone who owns all benchmades and only owned one spyderco pm2. Key word "owned". Plan on getting a pm3 though to become a regular edc. Right now my Benchmade 9400 auto lives in my pocket everyday. Amazing knife.
@@whalehands when it comes to edc i think benchmade designs are king, they are alot more streamline, ive had 6 spydercos and now i only have a para 3 lw because of how well it carries
@@wyattbreymeyer4033 I have 3 benchmade 940s, two are serrated black, one is the 9400 auto. Bought to sell one. I bought a Maxamet para 3, then days later i was gifted a s30v Para 3. The second big knife i bought money wise was a Paramilitary 2 brown s35vn sprint run knife. Sold it days later. Ended up trading the Maxamet version to get it back months later. Which was a week ago. Love carrying it now. Only with DP clip though. Felt sentimental towards it. So those two spydercos are all i have. I have a Gerber 06 auto and a Toor Carbon Phoenix. I've had a lot of Benchmades. I would get them and resell them. I had a Super Freek. Wanted to carry it but, just didn't like it for some reason. As i mentioned above, im going to sell a 940 because for a long time, ive wanted a Bailout gry-1 m4 steel. I know i will carry and love that knife. The 940 im selling, i put custom micarta scales on it. After that, i carried it for a little bit, then really started missing the original aluminum scales. I would see all these other 940s with the beautiful wear on them and just wanted the aluminum scales back. I use my knives, the ones i carry that is. I keep them well maintained but, I'm not afraid to hack wood if i have to with them. I also have various tools from Winkler, Toor Knives, and Gerber. I love Gerbers american made products. I want to build a fastball on their custom shop. I know Gerber gets a bad wrap but, even though the quality on my 06 auto is shit, I love it for what it is. It just works. I also have the Principle and Strongarm. The Strongarm is a Beast. If they ever come out with a strong steel for it, i will get it. I am currently falling in love with Buck knives too. Looking to purchase a 110 in s35vn. I love Benchmades, and i have had more of them than any other but, i also like other companies as well. I hated Spydercos until i got my Para3. But my next knife will be a Bailout. I also carry a Leatherman Charge TTi on my hip everyday too.
@@whalehands i got my first 940 two days ago and i can already tell its not leaving my pocket for awhile i liked the buck marksman its a hell of a knife if you can tune it right, and sk knives had special editions usually in s35vn
@@whalehands I carried a para 3 ,pm2 and 940 as an edc. And honestly Spyderco knives perform better for daily cutting tasks like opening packages and whatnot. But Everytime you take them out of your pocket you don't get the same feeling as a 940. They just look ugly af and don't feel premium. Just my opinion tho, Spydercos beat Benchmade when it comes to performance in cutting so ig that's all that matters
Great video...overall Benchmade stands behind their steel more than Spyderco... Benchmade will list the Rockwell and Spyderco won't... makes me think they are not that good at heat treating...
Nice tests, I have a 940-2 and like it pretty decently. I need to get locktite for it though because my pivot keeps coming loose on it. My 940 also has a bunch of micro chips in the blade from cutting cardboard, which is odd because s30v usually doesnt for me. I also have a LW manix 2 in s110v which I like more, that doesnt microchip as easily which suprised me. S110v is supposed to be chippy, but I only have 1 chip and that was from hitting concrete being stupid lol. The manix has better ergos, is lighter, and cuts better so for me it's my preference.
Travis Meering I hope you can experience the Anthem. I broke down and bought one. I have a 940-1 and for another $160 I can tell I’m getting my money’s worth. The Benchmade anthem is the Apex of high end production knives. Plus there’s only two screws excluding the pocket clip.
At the price point of the BM Osborne 940, you can get Spyderco Shaman. A good slicer and more suited for hard use. I would be interested to see the two compared.
“Pried off paint can lids” . What? they make 59 cent tools for that. I will definitely look at both. I like the looks of the Spyderco. I like what you said about Benchmade customer service. Kudos to your end of video talk. Great video
Great video! Here's my 2 cents now. There is no perfect edc knife, all of them have their strong points along with their weak points. So get what looks the best to you lol. For me I went with the 940 because of benchmades warranty.
For me I really like the axis lock and I really like the para 2, so I've decided to meet in the middle and get the Ganzo G729 since its basically a para 2 with an axis lock. Of course the blade steal is different but the 729 is also about 20 bucks rather than over priced.
@@Wanucho no offend, GANZO knifes ARE JUNK. I have BM 551 (70$). Also bought Ganzo 727M (15$) and Sanrenmu small Axis (10$) some weeks ago, Ganzo: 1) very thin, fragile tip. 2) came with small rusty spots, 3)small, plastic washers :: horizontal play 4) springs too strained, when I fixed them, they deformed and now mechanism is too mild, 5) small torx-es were so tight, I damaged 2 T6 screwdriver while opening. small Sanrenmu is way better knife, but much expensive griptilian is perfect, so I don't think that "expensive" knives are OVERPRICED. PS: personal opinion that piggy capitalists making big money while producing awesome quality, durable products, while comrade china makes money from cheap JUNK , DDDDDD
Been using my pm2 for a few years now. Love it and can't complain. Ended up grabbing a pm3 lw as well and again, it's a great little knife. My first bench made will be here on Saturday:). Had reward points at work so I decided to cash in and ordered a 940-1
First one I received was tampered with, someone swapped the s90v for a D2 blade, whole thing might have been counterfeit idk. Replacement 940-1 looks nice but pretty dull, touched it up on the kme for now but the angle on one side is much steeper than the other. Will shave hair now but need to reprofile it in the future and even those grinds ups. After that this will probably be my main carry, so might and thin compared to my pm2. Lighter than my pm3 lw as well.
Very comprehensive comparison between two favorite US made knives, Rev. Thank you for an exhausting effort. My brother is a dedicated Benchmade type of guy, the kind of person who only owns one knife, period. . And because he lives abroad and occasionally looses his one knife, I usually replace it with another Benchmade. Me, I like owning a few different folders, mostly budget knives with AUS 8 steel, or its equivalent as I am able to keep my knives razor sharp at all times. Given a choice, I would prefer the Spyderco because of the full flat grind blade; but then again, I really like the Benchmade Axis lock. Personally, both these knives are out of my price range. My solution? A Ganzo G729. Look like a PM2, but with a nice piston lock. Decent steel for my urban use, solid built, and available for under $20.
I am down to just three brands of folders I will carry. I always have a Benchmade Mini Griptilian in the pocket and also carry a full sized Griptilian, or 940 at times. Also quite fond of the ZT, 0566, 0350, and tiger stripe 0301, and the Emerson CQC-8 and CQC- Horseman. You can bet I have at least two or three of those on me at all times.
I have both PM2 and the 940 Osborne. Also have other Spyderco models as well as Benchmades. Own a Chris Reeve 21 Sebenza too. Take this for what it's worth... go ahead and spend your coin on these higher end EDC's with their "super-steel" blade materials that I find myself touching up just as much as a 420c blade that takes an edge and cuts like a scalpel. What my point is...I petty much have carried and owned the whole bunch, and the knife that rides with me just about every day is my little old Kershaw Leek. As long as I'm not planning on getting stranded in the wilderness or using my blade as a friggin' pry-bar, I'll carry my little slicer. If ya don't have one...get one, a fraction of the cost. I think you'll like it too.
The 940 has like a tanto, thicker on the half inch point with a very interesting & unique drop tip point on the cutting edge (instead of 2 straight edges meeting like a true tanto tip). While the Spyder co. Has a finer thinner point, with a thinner overall blade, so it slices better. As the Benchmades blade geometry has the varying thickness spine (thicker point section) its cross section is more like a wedge. I own both, and they both are absolutely amazing! Price is actually similar as well. If I had to choose 1 it would have to be the 940. Because of their lifetime warranty, as long as you don't loose the knife or get it stolen, it will always be there for you. Plus the fit and finish feels good in the hands and the strengthened tip was what really sold me on the knife 18 years ago. I just handled everything that they had available and it was between a Spyder Co, a Kershaw, Cold steel and a Benchmade. But I've collected all of the Above since then hahaha
Great vid. Like many I have both and have done similar tests with almost identical results but I've always preferred the ergos and blade shape of the para 2. My only gripe was always the damn size. Enter.. The para 3. Ultimatley you really can't go wrong with either. Great video man. Your closing statements were honest and real. Great stuff bruddah.
I love Spyderco knives. I've never owned a Benchmade , but I can confirm that Sypderco has so so customer service. I've heard good things about Benchmades. Still love my PM2. I'm careful with all of my Spyderco's tips though. The only knife I abuse is my Rat1 in D2. Can't kill it.
I loved your review Rev. And if I want to pry I will use a 🪛. I totally enjoyed your suggestions to give people a break especially during the silly season. God Bless You.
I have PM2 and 940-2, and I absolutely prefer pm2.. 940 is small-ish in hand, if you want a nice letter opener or a small urban/office EDC it's a-ok.. but PM2 is something you can really trust on.. i'm living in an asian (foreign to me) country and some locals have recommended me to carry a knife, I own about 20 different knives and PM2 is what I trust the most.. endura 4 would be on the second place
Mika Huttunen I’m with you man. Have 2 pm2 and a 940bk. Had the 940-1 and sold it to get the 940bk. I just couldn’t trust the cf scales on the 940-1for hard use. Even then, I still prefer to carry my brown pm2. Still, they’re both good knives.
Steve Brule I have an all black para 3 also. I didn’t carry it at all when it was gifted to me 6 months ago because of that damn placement of the pocket clip it came with. I pulled the trigger on an mxg pocket clip 2 weeks and it’s been in my pocket more than my pm2 and my brown pm2 has a Casey Lynch pocket clip.
I’ve tried several spyderco knives for EDC in construction, I always end up back to my 940-2. Size, weight, blade shape and feel in my hand is perfect for me. Spyderco just seems awkward to me. Pm2, pm3, tenacious and endura, tried them all.
I don’t ever recall using a folding pocket knife to bore a hole in wood. I own both the 940 and the PM2, and Para 3 with S110V. The 940 is a power house knife for EDC because it is easy to deploy yet has a slim package. The Spyderco’s have a far superior blade steel with the S110V that makes it a high performance and compact EDC. Note that if you buy a Para 3, you will want to buy a Lynch deep pocket clip.
I have both and i like both but im a carpenter and i constantly need to sharpen pencils and the pm2 sharpens it like butter. The 940 takes a little more effort.
Both are great products but what separates them both is customer service Benchmade is amazing Spyderco is like a bunch of robots I had a knife that was broken and they wouldn't even replace it through warranty Benchmade no problem sharpening clips they are on point
I own several Spyderco knives, Several Endura 4s and a few Delicas. I also own a few Benchmade 940s and one Benchmade 940-1. My opinion is that both are great knives, I also think their intended purpose was for EDC. However, I think the daily carry for each was for 2 different type of people. My Spyderco knives do fulfill my NORMAL EDC. With light to medium use. I do like the leaf blade shape. However, the point is a “dual edge sword” type of thing. It is very useful in piercing. However, it is too thin for heavier work. My Benchmade 940s I carry when I’m going to do some carpenter, or other type of heavy use work. I like the blade shape for that. Also, the tip is much stronger. My 940-1 I do work with sometimes, but I also like to carry it when I am somewhat dressed up. I’ve no idea why. I think it’s the carbon fiber. But in the other pocket I also carry an Endura 4. If it’s a serious situation, I carry a cold steel Voyager, or a Recon One, with 4 inch blades. Just my thoughts.
I really like both of them the only complaints I have with them is with the 940 they handle is incredibly small for me my hands are huge but they are big and they can't hold the knife with confidence with the Spyderco the only complaint I have is sharp edges but you can knock those down very easily
👍👍👍 I like that you actually use the knifes, actually cut stuff. In my opinion this is the only way to test Action, Ergo's and real world cutting. A plus, Customer Service, and warranty, good work. 👍👍👍
Yes, but many, all too many, tell you this and that about knives ergo's and blade steel, but don't seem to cut real world stuff ( cardboard, rope, zip ties and wood) continuously to really know how comfortable the handle and blade grind is, plus, hand sharpen the edge so it's known the hardest it's temper to and edge angle. Thanks for putting in the work. The only thing I'd also like to know, is the handle grip area, being that I wear an XL glove, 3.5" blade can be the smallest blade for a four finger grip. 😉
The tip on the PM2 is its weak point . When I got mine the first I did was drop on the tip ( NOT ON PURPOSE ) and it bent over . I was not happy to say the least . I fixed it . After sharpening it I compared it to my wife's PM2 and I lost about 1/8 in blade length . It no longer has the needle point but its not bad . I've been carrying it now foe 6 years soon to be 7 .
Owning both, 940 is clear winner for me. PM2 is a slightly better slicer and also has a slightly higher fidget factor. 940 is a lot smaller in the pocket, has the better clip, better handle (edges and lock cutout on PM2 suck), and feels like higher value overall (which it is, ofc). Also: Warranty, looks. PM2 ain't bad but my 940 sees like 10 times as much pocket time.
The PM2 is an outstanding pocket knife. I have the S110V steel version, which I think is the best medium to large sized pocket knife in the world. However, even with the harder steel I wouldn’t twist the tip in anything too hard. On balance it’s a great slicer because of that fine blade shape, and that’s more important. Another thing - look at the wave shape of the PM2’s handle. It’s not ugly! It’s highly ergonomic. Whether you hold it behind or on the choil (which gives finer control) it is very comfortable.
In 40 years the only tools that ever got broken are the ones that I loaned to my friends who don't know how to use tools properly.
i know, ive seen victorinox knives being batoned and even higonomkami knives getting prybarred
James yeah I don't know what it is these days that people think a knife is shit if it breaks from doing something stupid
Lol
@@jasonphillips572 I would have lost it. Probably hurt his feelings. Ignorant bastard.
Jay N There is nothing on the market that carries the way the 940 does! And I agree about the aluminum scales, satin smooth!
Main reason why the s90v 940 is in my pocket every day... It's like a feather with a scorpion sting
Just got my 940 yesterday, and holy shit. Easily the best knife I’ve ever had in my hand and pocket. Truly a terrifying awesome tool.
Just purchased the 9400 auto

Honestly the Osborne 940 grew on me the more I used it. At first it wasn’t my favorite. Now, all these years later it doesn’t leave my side. EDC classic.
I just hate those cheap shitty omega springs
And yeah 940 is top dog. Designed by a real rancher. Enough said. That reverse tanto with that reinforced tip is the best looking blade ever imo & it can take a beating most blades can’t take. Can’t tell you how much heavy prying I’ve done with my 940 & never broke. I tried carrying a pm2 & broke the tip in like the first 2 weeks of carrying it lol got my 940 and that’s all I need. I have much much more expensive knives but none can take the 940 out my pocket.
I’ve had 940s for 10 years. Just ordered the PM2 so we shall see. Good video and evaluation comparison. God is Great !
How has the pm2 been?
Well?
Amen bro! Serving is def the way to a deeper walk! Love hearing stories like this... thanks for sharing and God bless!
Love all my benchmades! Never had a spyderco...yet...but when it comes to prying paint cans that's a job for my leatherman lol
Thanks Rev!
I have both. Hands down the 940 is the best for my day to day application. I’m rough on a knife. The 940 takes everything I throw at it
Pm2 all day long. Favorite carry knife. Now I cut a lot of cardboard at my job and for that I use my Endura 4.
Spot on
@@inhalefarts yep i agree I've never understood people cutting cardboard with their knives.
You can ziptie deploy the PM2 so it's open as it's coming out of your pocket.
Totally accurate comment!!
One thing you left out, spyderco has absolutely the superior heat treats as well.
@@EDCandLace
For sure…I feel like benchmade’s s30v is a bit easier to get *ultra* sharp on a bench stone. But other than that, the cruwear and m4 on my shamans, etc. is undoubtedly better than my adamas or 560. I think spyderco just has more experience with tool steels since they use them so much more often. I also like that they don’t automatically coat every tool steel.
Spydyrco has better steel than benchmade,, 😅hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha 😆 😅
Spydyrco are cheap
Friend, I truly love the way you finish the video off, there’s nothing like Grace the gift that keeps giving. The gift that’s so simple people won’t accept it.
I have both, love both but I honestly do prefer the 940
I also use my 940 more often than my Para 2. Since about 5 years my 940 is my edc and it never failed.
Ulrich Wollfoerster I haven’t found its match yet, I have the 940-1 and still prefer the original..... idk it’s just a homerun of a knife
940 is better in every way EXCEPT cutting lol

Best test on RUclips between the 2 no bias and a actual test
Unlike some cosmetic review, this is the best knife test that I've seen so far. Please keep up the good work.
There's a bunch of meme like stories of guys punching holes in car hoods, used as a can opener etc.
Well said
No axis lock is better and so is the blade
Even after the para 3 chipped 😅
I bought one Benchmade. It works fine but was underwhelming. At half its price, I would have been happy with it.
I bought one Spyderco and found it worked better for me than any folder I’d had before. If I want hard use? I’ll grab a fixed blade with sturdy tip and tough steel. I won’t use a folder, especially an expensive one.
This the first time I visit your channel. I skipped straight to the end to see the winner. Your encouraging words are at the end made me a subscriber.
Thank you!
Have both, love both. 940 gets more pocket time because it's slimmer
Watched for the knives, stayed for the ending. Thank you for putting that in your video it means alot to me. Its amazing how God can use people in all sorts of ways. Keep the motivation coming.
Amen & God Bless you brother!

Good Video, I lost my 940 recently (I know sucks!) I ended up getting a Spiderco PM2 to replace it. it's a tough call between these 2 they are both great in different ways.
I own both. Benchmade 940 all day.
Lasurge1982 also own both to me edc 940. If your in the woods the pm2 or split the difference and get bench made nakamura
PM2 for me, I own two, my big hands require a larger size knife. The handle on the 940 would be a pain in the ass for me.

Yep
Great video my friend. While I love the ffg and blade shape of the PM2 I more often carry my 940 for edc because the tip is just too fine on the PM2. I snapped one once and now I'm nervous to use it for edc as a tradesman. And the compression lock is not great for us lefties as you pointed out. Both great knives though.
Just got a PM2 it's on the way. Love how you are spreading the good news at the end of your video. God bless
Good news?
Looks like you struggled more cutting the cardboard with the pm2
super biased obviously haha more than once the PM2 almost didn't even finish the cut through..
Yes I love my pm2 with a passion that most certainly is not reciprocated however I'll admit he definitely struggled more so with the Pm2 🤦♂️
Looked that way to me too. He also said the tip of PM2 got under the zip ties further...didn't look like it on video.
All jokes aside, great video!
for me it's quite simple. i live in the city and do hair for a living. a knife is about 80% toy for me and 20% tool i actually use. 940 all day.
you cut people's hair with a benchmade 940?
The Marquis holy shit people would pay for that
You might of liked the pm2 better if it was the left hand version of it. I love my Benchmades but I also love my pm2 LH. Good review thanks 🐱
You're probably right. The right handed version is a pain to close for me. My biggest problem is the thin tip and the tendency to chip and break of a small portion of the tip... but for a lot of people it suits them perfectly. Cant deny it's a winning design and slices like no ones business
Benchmade and Spyderco I think are perfection when it comes to pocket knives.

Travis Meering best knife on the market
Travis Meering I hope you can experience the Anthem. I broke down and bought one. I have a 940-1 and for another $160 I can tell I’m getting my money’s worth. The Benchmade anthem is the Apex of high end production knives. Plus there’s only two screws excluding the pocket clip.
Having the Para 2 it is a great cutter. It sounds like it you want to bushcraft and do things you are not supposed to do with a knife get the 940.
At the price point of the BM Osborne 940, you can get Spyderco Shaman. A good slicer and more suited for hard use. I would be interested to see the two compared.

Can't beat a Ganzo. Budget gem.

My Endura with the VG-10 is outstanding!
The 940 blade reminds me of a old school Case knife. It is a rancher knife. The PM2 has a military background. Two very different use knives
Nice review, I would also prefer a 940, more durable knife.
I have a Byrd Meadowlark in g10. The edges of the scales were very angular so I took a small file to them and rounded them. Much more comfortable.
Love my pm2 I gotta get my hands on a 940
Very comprehensive comparison between two favorite US made knives, Rev.
I am using the leek every day as well. It’s a weird looking knife but it cuts better than anything I have.
I own both. I carry 940 as my daily knife. But PM2 as my work knife. Because I find PM2 handles better with gloves on.
I own both,.... and I would walk confidently into any dark alley with either of them my hand ! Both awesome blades 🥰🤙🏼🇨🇦
As opposed to carrying a pistol? Lol
@@e90_austin we can't carry pistols in Canada. Heh
I'm just happy to see a review by a fellow-lefty. It's an issue in the knife world.
Awesome! Thank you! And God bless you! So refreshing to see bold Faith in Our Saviour! ❤️
I enjoyed the comparison, but really liked how you ended the video. God bless!
Thanks so much for the ending and your advice...I praise God for you
Iam suprised about the wood carving. Nothing bites through wood like my PM2
Hi, what angle did you set your edge at? Mine couldn't bite through wood as good as the mini crooked river
You sound like a spyderco sales rep lmao
you probably need a gun
I think this was a very fair review. Thank-you
You know i don't think the rope will dull it near as quick as the wooden board.
Both are great products but what separates them both is customer service Benchmade is amazing Spyderco is like a bunch of robots I had a knife that was broken and they wouldn't even replace it through warranty Benchmade no problem sharpening clips they are on point
You need to do a Doug Marcaida test.... "it will kill (or keel)"
Chris Reuther 😂😂 that would be great
Keel haha
You right
Lol nice.
So the PM2 is slightly better for slicing, but the tip is stronger on the 940. Thanks for the video!
Just finally got my 940. But I will also be getting a Paramilitary 2 or 3 sometime in the future :p :p
I'm guessing you got the tanto?
Best wishes to you man! Thanks for the informative video and the solid message at the end! Good luck in all your endeavors!
👍👍👍 I like that you actually use the knifes, actually cut stuff. In my opinion this is the only way to test Action, Ergo's and real world cutting. A plus, Customer Service, and warranty, good work. 👍👍👍
Paul Jenkins thanks... these are pretty common tasks for knives so I think it makes sense to test them like this
Yes, but many, all too many, tell you this and that about knives ergo's and blade steel, but don't seem to cut real world stuff ( cardboard, rope, zip ties and wood) continuously to really know how comfortable the handle and blade grind is, plus, hand sharpen the edge so it's known the hardest it's temper to and edge angle. Thanks for putting in the work. The only thing I'd also like to know, is the handle grip area, being that I wear an XL glove, 3.5" blade can be the smallest blade for a four finger grip. 😉
Paul Jenkins I wear an xl glove as well, and these both get a good 4 fingers
The tip on the PM2 is its weak point . When I got mine the first I did was drop on the tip ( NOT ON PURPOSE ) and it bent over . I was not happy to say the least . I fixed it . After sharpening it I compared it to my wife's PM2 and I lost about 1/8 in blade length . It no longer has the needle point but its not bad . I've been carrying it now foe 6 years soon to be 7 .
Thorough test. Thanks for doing it.
I think it's really interesting that the Spyderco cuts apples better when that spine is so thick.
I have finally found another left handed knife addict
Not enough lefty options out there
I Own both. 940 as my daily but the pm2 is defiantly slicier better for food and opening boxes. Everything else 940. Have both sharpened to 17°
