What Chris Reeve Knife Blade Shape is BEST...

  • There are three primary blade shapes CRK uses. Traditional/Drop Point, Tanto, and Insingo.
    When you are spending the kind of money that Chris Reeve Knives demands, you may find yourself in a quandary as to which blade is right for you. A lot of factors do enter into it. For me, I've chosen the Insingo. It is a cardboard cutting machine, offering lots of cutting edge. On that note, the Tanto offers the least amount of edge, so keep that in mind. The Insingo also is great in the kitchen as a slicer/dicer and carver. Also, lots of cutting edge to help with those tasks, and with the very subtle curvature, you don't have to cock your wrist up in the air to take advantage of the edge closest to the tip. This may or may not come into your decision-making, but the Insingo is the least "stabby" looking and may raise fewer eyebrows should you take the knife out in view of the general public.
    The Drop Point is very traditional and still very useful. I've always felt it was a very expensive, one-hand opening, titanium-handled Buck 110. So, if that is your idea of the perfect knife blade and are a die-hard traditionalist, then this blade may be your thing.
    The Tanto is a very cool blade and their interpretation of the Tanto is quite lovely. I like it very much and found it actually fun to sharpen. However, unless my day was to be spent prying slugs out of wood for forensics testing, or having to stab into stuff, I find the blade shape to be the least useful. It is obviously the most "stabby" looking. But also incredibly cool looking. If you are looking for cool, then by all means get this one. But, remember, that tanto point is at the expense of a lot of edge.
    Which one would you choose? Let me know in the comments.

    Wow! great vid. Very helpful for those debating on their first Chris Reeve. My favorite blade Shape has always been the Insingo, it just appeals to me the most. Received my spydie benza today the work is outstanding! Thanks

    Good video man! I've been trying to decide which blade to get on a sebenza. I prefer the look of the drop point but I'm all about function. Bold move drilling holes in your expensive blades but function comes first! I bet that steel is a bit hard to drill through

      Thank you so much for the kind words. It was very nice of you. I appreciate it. I really like the INSINGO blade. With the right tools, you can cut through just about anything. But I really take my time, and nothing ever gets overheated. And they are perfectly round, and perfectly centered. I love this knife!

    I have a lot of 21's. I keep seeing your videos and it's so tempting. The hole looks great and obviously works great. Everything comes with a tradeoff. You must admit the blade is weakened some amount by the modification. I just fear it breaking. A cracked raindrop or basketweave would be such a loss. Do you do this for a price or do I need to start practicing on cheaper things?

      Feel free to email me or look me up on Instagram under the same name, and I can send you all the particulars in order for me to do the same to your knife. As long as you can remember it is a knife and not a crowbar, it should never be an issue. Just think about it… Spyderco knives don’t have a reputation for breaking. My holes are perfectly centered, perfectly round, and only take away just enough material to get the job done.

    I concur. I have an Inkosi Insingo and a Sebenza tanto. Even tho the Seb is actually longer, the effective useful length of the Insingo blade length is longer by about 3/8".

      Good. As far as that tanto is concerned, I think it’s an awesome blade. But just not as useful as the Insingo blade. I’m glad you concur. thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment and let me know your thoughts.

    have you ever had problems with blades breaking after having the spydie hole mod, i imagine it must weaken it a bit taking that much metal out

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  Год назад +1

      That is a fair question. I would imagine if you were to use the blade as a pry bar in anyway shape or form it would snap. But I’ve done hundreds, and never had anybody get back to me and say their blade broke. So I guess the rule is… If you just use it for the purpose it was intended, it should last you forever. Spyderco knives hold up really well I have a big hole.

    wow , haven't finished the video yet but love the spydie hole wow , wow , wow . i take it you stripped the knife down to blade only. then how did you manage to clamp it down without damaging the edge ? or you just put on a new edge. what type of drill did you use ? cobalt ? in a pedestal drill ? excellent skills , well done my friend.

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  Год назад +1

      Thank you so much for your very thoughtful comment! Yes I do remove the blade from the knife. And I clamp it in such a way that no damage comes to the blade, the edge, or the finish. I use a series of carbide bits that I’m going to say are “proprietary“ in system and series that puts the hole in the exact right position, with no overheating and the hole is perfectly round!

      I actually found the Insingo blade to cut cardboard better than the tanto. There is actually more usable edge on the Insingo. And that blade shape just lends itself great to biting into cardboard.

      @@mrsw916 I can see that for long periods of use, that would definitely be the case. Because there are some pointy spots on the handle of the Inkosi. But you can get the INSINGO blade on a SEBENZA.
