I wonder what the statues on Easter Island are waiting for
Do you think they're waiting for us to build a bridge off the island?
Brent Coker Nah, they could just walk along the sea bed. most of them seem to be looking upwards so perhaps they are going to stop a meteor shower destroying us in a few years.
Let's hope they'll prevent a incoming nuclear attack or asteroid shower/comet.

This game still breaks my heart. This wise, all-knowing stone man watches years go by in seconds, yet he loves and values the world so much that he travels for miles, something he may have NEVER done in his life before. He enjoys watching society evolve around him, but knows he must keep going if they’ll ever survive. Finally, he makes a sacrifice that may not have killed him, but forces him to wait forever inside a volcano, to never see the sun or sky or plants or people again. But still, he’s happy, knowing that the world above will be blissfully unaware they were ever in danger. Unaware that they were ever so loved.
Aaaand I just depressed myself.

"Grandpa, how long has that Statue been there?" The young child asked. The elder smiled and looked over to where the stone, silver, statue sat. It sat in the grain, some say it even planted it.
"Well, 30 years ago our civilization has just started to grow. We're we ever hungry and cold, we waited for a miracle to happen. A miracle to bring us food. Then, one bright winter day, a figure came. The figure ventured far, then stood still, with a puzzled look planted on its grey face. Then it moved to another place. After a year it came back, wielding some grain. It took and planted the grain several times. Then sat and it waited... Well, for us to eat it I supposed. Even though we have but it is most likely blind due to its stone eyes." The old man shrugged. He sighed and relaxed while looking down at the youth.
"That's it?" the child asked. The elder nodded his head as he chuckled. Until they both heard a yell. The child and elder rushed to open the door. And there they saw, the statue. It was standing and...Yelling.

Theory Time: You are the Wander Between Worlds, whose gravestone you find on the other side of the volcano, you saw the calamity and died in it, and your restless soul traveled between worlds in time, and possessed the rock to stop it. This is why you felt there was a calamity coming in the first place, and how you knew it was a volcanic eruption. It could have been a meteor impact, but you knew better.
How is there a theory to this? it's obviously shown directly no-bullshit-style in the game.
As said by Interesting After School:
"Well, this is an ancient story based in some Inuit tribe beliefs in northern Canada. The Inuit people known it as a rock with a face. The belief was every year the rock would move forward. There was no logical explanation because many of the men were weak and had no food, therefore no one had the strength to push the rock. The rock came to a village and yet a tribe had only one piece of food. It was not enough to feed the village so they gave it to the chief. The next week, they found plants growing in the village. Not only that, but the rock was on the other side of the village facing toward the volcano, and it would wait. Later in a decade it was gone. Many years later when European explorers hit Canada, there was a Mountain they named Artemisia pipe. They checked to see if there what was down there. This game is just so peaceful. The simplicity honestly just makes it perfect.
nostalgia man
I think the monument in the end is there to honor the player themselves by breaking the fourth wall-- you being the traveler between worlds (real world and game world) who has died from saving everyone from the volcano. And since it is a secret location, an easter egg, the player can be qualified as a curious person who's never satisfied with the conclusion that's handed to him, therefore the game wishes them to "find a way home", to a place where they could finally be at peace and stop looking for answers to questions that might not be there. That's why the monument is a tombstone, because it's literally the death of the player's curiosity, if you reached that point, there's nothing more you can do to explore the game.
That's how I see it anyway.

There was a comment I read when I was watching this a few months ago that explained what this game might've been based off of. If I remember correctly, it was a folklore that went like this:
- Many years ago in northern North America (or Canada before they were colonized). There lived a small tribe of native Americans and they were starving. One day, a giant rock appeared in their village and many assumed it must've gotten there while they were asleep overnight. They described this rock as having a face. And in many cases when these unnatural occurrences happened in nature, such as a rock having a face, the native Americans would worship them as signs from their gods. And in doing so, they would give them some sort of offering, and in most cases it would be food. But the tribe was starving and had little food, instead the tribe gave any food they had to their chief leader so he could live. The story varies here but it's described that the Rock with a Face did not spite the Native Americans for not giving it any offerings. And every day since it arrived in the village, it would noticeably move from its original spot by a little bit. No one could understand this phenomenon because none of them were strong enough to move the giant Rock with a Face, and if they could, they would have still been to weak from hunger to push it. 10 years later, the rock had completely vanished and none of the people knew where it went. And in its path which it moved, within their village, food was growing abundantly.
Flash forward a few centuries to 2012, a group of researchers discovered a volcano in Canada. They observed that the volcano should have erupted many years ago, and if it did, a large part of North America would have been destroyed. However now that it has been so long, it is no longer active. They discovered that in one of the critical-erupting points inside of the volcano, it was blocked shut by a large rock different from the rock the volcano was made of -- and it had a face. We have no clue whether this Rock with a Face really had an impact in stopping the eruption of this volcano.
However, now this folklore has been retold that the Rock with a Face was possessed by spirits of the tribe that, in one lifetime, died from the volcano and came back to protect this lifetime of themselves so they could live and so a future could exist. On top of the Rock with a Face, there were two words engraved on it, where no one could see it because they would've been too short when standing beside it. It read (American translation:) "nomad" and "universe". Anyone who is culturally and ethnically multilingual know that words can have connotative meaning that can be lost through translation. "Nomad" and "universe" could have a deeper meaning.
Sorry if I got any facts wrong, like idk if native Americans worshipped gods.

Hey I’m really late to this but I sort of have an idea of what the gravestone means? (Not that anyone will likely see this)
I believe that the first two lines refer to the player them self because they are playing the game but are also in the real world. Their name is unknown because the game doesn’t know the player’s name.
The third line is calling the player curious, because they were curious enough to get to the grave and take the time to get there.
I’m not entirely sure about the last line, but I think it has to do with the patience of the player, and feeling like reading the grave wasn’t worth the effort (which is a bit dark but it kinda fits the theme of the game).
I’m like 3 years late to this so Mark probably won’t see this, but I hope he found some sort of meaning.
Hipster Shady That really makes a lot of sense!
Well, I'm surprised comments are still being made to this day
ikr
Hipster Shady
I think the last line means resting curiosity for this game. You may take a different approach of getting to the end, but there is no "secret happy ending", you just have to sacrifice, and leave the game. Maybe you can play again, but it's always the same. Everyone has the same two endings. You can let the fire burn, or put it out and achieve peace. And in your place, grows new life.
All of this, just a metaphor of reality. For those who can't be patient.
And I suppose even if this comment was posted 3 years late, I guess its also a metaphor of patience in its self as people who watched this 3 years ago and also Markiplier if he ever reads the comment posted will find out what the gravestone meant
The gravestone at 11;24 is an easter egg, built from a human's point of view.
1)Since Stone Monster has seen 150 year's worth of time, stretching quite possibly from the early 1600's to the late 1700's, it was able to see multiple cultures.
2)The Stone Monster doesnt seem to be capable of language, so there was no opportunity to exchange names with anyone.
3)The Stone Monster has been wandering with no apparent aim, so it was labeled as "curious."
4)Humans don't bury their dead far away unless they have to. It seems the latest buildings from the humans seem to from the late 1700's. Although Wyoming became a state in the late 1800's, Yellowstone is the most dangerous volcano in America, and quite possibly the world. Of course, only Stone Monster can save us.
---
You'll get a cookie if you thumbs up.
What if one of the stone faces of Ellis Island woke up, spread his seed for the humans, and jumped into a volcano to save the world? The humans would worship it by making more of it to help them further, right?

I have a dream, that hope will come true, that you'll be with me, I'll be with you. Please let the passage of time go swiftly.
I lava you.
+Sarah Hollis Oh my life.
:)
That reference...
why must you make that reference
Oh lord
5 years later..
This is in my recommendations..
I am happy..
I've reached enlightenment..
Because of this man..
I am proud to live..
*He* makes me proud to live
Him..
Every time I wait in bed for the release of sleep..
He is there.
With his brand new game, review, or anything of the such.
I would watch him until I fall..
Until I fall into the world of dreams.
And his name..
They call him Markiplier....
It is nearing the 6 year anniversary of this video. I remember watching this when I was younger and being amazed by his humor and his comedy. This was one of the first videos I watched of Markiplier. Oh what a journey it has been.
Wow, that went deep... Deeper than I thought a cute little pixelated game could. But anyway, about that gravestone, I think that's meant to be your character's gravestone. Think about it, it spoke of a traveler between worlds. You could argue that as years pass and things around you change and advance, you're leaving one world behind and entering another. We clearly don't know the name of this character, it's only described as a being of stone, and it could be described as curious because as it goes around and watches these changes happen, you could say that it might begin to wonder how these changes come about and what causes things to advance in society, even maybe how it becomes curious as to how to stop this calamity from happening.
That's just my interpretation, but I'd love to hear other ideas. :)
Jace Gem thats deep man thats deep.
Jace Gem what if there were multiple beings of stone and that was a previous one's gravestone and there are multiple calamities that happen every 400 years?
That's so deep it could reach 2 feet into the ground... Times a million!!
That... thats really deep. I think ill go queston reality in a corner now
Sage Foster That could be a possibility. Perhaps you'd found the grave site of a stone being from an alternate time line, and this only further motivates you to keep it from happening.
Villagers: wow this stone monster is standing here since he planted that wheat, well nice but every year he--
Monster: EAT THE GRAIN!!!!! EAT THE GRAIN!!!!!!
XD
This comment made me laugh so hard
*EAT THE GRAIN!* OKAY BYE!
That is why every year we hold a festival where we all eat as much grain as we can.... It's what he would have wanted :0
"OKAY BYE!!!! 0-o"
OMG IM DYING CALL 911! XD
like how Senku from Dr. Stone waited for millions of years to be depretrified.
thousands, not millions
12:05 You just know the light in this man’s life just flickered out like that. Poor guy, he’s so devastated. I feel so bad.
This Stone Man sacrificed himself to save humanity, Legends say his body still remains in that very volcano we speak of today
Is this a real story
@@joshualozada413 as far as we know
@@pyrothefriendlyarsonist9195 no its not-_-

@@Fwmelo ah buzz kill
8:55 you spent 267 years with that expression
Lol
+Michael Angelo He actually spent 1880 years with that expression...pretty impressive.
If I made a mistake, my bad
Oh, I see. So, the world was overdue for a massive end-of-humanity scenario, and the weird rock thing knew this. He is the reason we still exist today, and is most likely still there.
How humble.

Scriptwelder (Im sorry if the name was spelt wrong) can literally make anything into a game, from some murderous psycho in a spaceship to a literal statue walking
And alot of them are somehow connected
Like I'm pretty sure the grave at then end is a reference to a document in dont escape: 4 days to survive though I may be wrong
“A calamity is coming.”
Well...yeah. Except it’s coming in 4 years not 400.
Actually it's today. 4 days not 4 years
Actually it's about to come in 4 hours
what the fuck does this mean
EDIT: Nevermind, i get it now. I though you were foreseeing something terrible.
Actually it's coming in about 4 seconds
4 milliseconds
"time is very important"
Mark was ahead of his time
This is my favorite video on Mark's channel. I come here to rewatch every so often like every year or so. I just like it :)
This was 5 years ago I remembered watching this video when it came out
Hey marki!!, if you liked the concept of this game, you should try one called "The Company of Myself" it's got an amazing concept and plot behind it and the 'graphics' are similar to this game. I enjoyed it a lot on newgrounds and the ending blew my mind.
Camila Cuevas hey Cami, didn't know you're a fan of Mark yourself! :D
YES!!! I just played it and I'm crying so much...saddest ending ever T-T
haleybug230 It's not sad really, it's..... Sappy. Presentable Liberty has a sad ending.
I was just about to suggest it!
you made undertale stuff! dust is amazing
Well Mark I don't think it was sad because Ricky died with the thought of his death saving humanity. Ricky died a very honorable death.
who says he's dead maybe he's OK
D: I just live for the Cheetos....
Technically, since he is a rock, he is immortal. Therefore, the volcano's lava could not hurt him, maybe melt him at most. However, he would most likely cool down and be reformed as a new rock.
***** Is that the game I think it is?With high school students?
***** Oh,oops :x I guess I should edit that. Now no one will ever know..Unless they looked before it
Plot twist: he isn’t waiting, he’s accelerating time
...
MADO IN HEAVENDA
Kami no mimei ni oite shiri so keru!
The shade from The Longing gets bored waiting 400 days.
Stone man: Pathetic.
ricky the rock felt very cold one day, so he deceided to go sleep in the volcano THE END
Yay happy ending
What A Happy Ending =)
magesh sami XD RIP
And he literally never left the volcano
Happy ending
