I think it's vital to do what works...my hair has responded positively to some of these "don'ts." I definitely see why this information is valuable to others, though. Thanks!
This video is still very informative never the less....she not EXACTLY wrong. On the other hand not every ones hair is the same and don't respond in the same manner with every product...do what works for you ladies! It's a journey for a reason..
Hi Izzy belle You can rinse with conditioner then a deep conditioner. However, it's not necessary because the deep conditioner will condition the outside of your hair as well. I would suggesting use the Cantu conditioner when you don't plan on deep conditioning your hair.
Girl I have been deep conditioning my hair overnight for the full 3 years that I've been natural and I do this once a week as I wash it and I have gotten no damage it actually made my hair grow faster I am now almost waist length 💁🏾
I have always deep conditioned my hair overnight and have never had problems with breakage. I actually get more breakage when I start to get lazy and don't DC overnight. This has been true for my hair both relaxed & natural. Relaxed I grew my hair to bra strap length. I have been natural for almost a year and have 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 inches of growth. Since cutting off my relaxed ends in January I have actually cut off about 3-4 inches. I wonder if the issue with excessive breakage has to do with immediate manipulation/combing after DC overnight? I only style my hair damp...If more moisture is needed I may spritz but styling right out of the shower is a no-no. Hair is too stretchy then!
Im sorry but I was disagreeing with you when you said when deep conditioning over night weakens the hair, but everyone hair is different and my hair loves it. I think that when I do it overnight and it's the best thing my hair has experienced.
_ Kylie Xo _ you are so right. Conditioning over night for years practically ate holes in my hair strands, literally. It was so horrible. I had so much breakage that it was insane. I now only leave conditioner on for no more than 2 hours
_ Kylie Xo _ Thank you so much!! I DC last time over night and it helped my hair a lot. Because it is normally so dry. But this time I added oils into the DC I am only about to be 16 and just starting to take care of my hair but it seems I'm doing everything wrong. I have noticed less breakage in my hair since using the JBCO line from Shea moisture but idk hair is frustrating.
Thanks so much for all your help and patience with my questions. I learned so much about moisture and protein balance. I never used a protein conditioner before, so I am excited to use it in my regimen. Also, I will make sure to squeeze my hair gently with a towel before conditioning...I just read in the description that too much water makes the product slide out of the hair, and I always wondered why my instant conditioner was heavier at the tips than the roots! I learned a lot about what I was doing wrong with my hair and how to fix it, thanks to you!
So I agree with some things u are saying all things work for u but other things work better for other ppl I keep my hair deep condition for like 2 weeks or more putting deep condition in my hair everyday or every other day and lock and seal it and my hair loves it with no breakage and makes it grow faster so u just gotta find out what your hair loves and works for u
Literally just got out the shower with moisturizing conditioner still in my hair. I was going to leave it in and put some oil in it and head to school but washing out this conditioner right now! Thank you!
I am so glad you posted this because I deep condition overnight every sunday and I was just about to leave oil in overnight. Thank you for posting this SUBSCRIBING!
Thanks for this. I cringe when women deep condition over night. If it say 7 min. Condition for 7 min! But what ever works for you. Thanks for the tip on deep conditioning on wet/dry hair.
Great video! Was looking for the answer to whether I can put deep conditioner on dry hair and you answered it perfectly. Learned a couple other things too. Thanks!
Ms. Rosie I am so glad you said you use the As I Am co wash. I use the co wash, leave-in condit, and the jelly. And every 2-3 wks I use the Deep condit. It has really worked wonders for my hair because when I was shampooing and condit my hair was looking dull and I didn't know what was going on. I think you give some great hair tips, so keep up the good job.
Latoya Lewis As I Am is probably the best product line that I've ever tried. It really helps in maintaining healthy hair and all of their products are formulated so well. Thanks so much for your kind words!
OMG I'm so glad I watched this... I have been experiencing excessive breakage and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know I need to stop deep conditioning overnight! Thanks so much
I can't stand when other people come on someone's video and try to tell them their information is incorrect. SMH. I found this video to be very helpful. Thank you !
Thanks for this video I'm transitioning and I'm having a lot of breakage!!! Hopefully following this regimen will stop it. Thanks again so many of us are not taught how to care for our hair as children and our parents aren't either and many of the stylists I have been to don't even tell you how to care for your hair if you would like to care for your hair better or maybe I have just been to the wrong people. I am trying to take care of my natural hair better thanks again. Love this video and I'll be sharing.
mscocoa011 Thanks so much for watching luv! Your experience is that of a lot of people. Including myself. If it wasn't for hair sites like Hairlista, I wouldn't know anything about hair.
@Tia Smith & that's why it's not good to deep condition overnight. Your hair doesn't suppose to be stretchy. Stretchy hair is moisture overload. You need some protein.
TheJazzplease It may lead to high porosity when done too often. Especially if your hair is exposed to a relatively higher alkaline deep conditioner than your hair. The older your hair gets, the more porous that it becomes. But hair porosity isn't something that is a big deal. If you have high porosity hair, stretch the time between chemical treatments and use products that are closer to hair's natural pH. If you have low porosity hair, when deep conditioning just use heat. Low porosity hair only becomes a problem with chemical treatments.
Thank you so much for this video, it is very informative. I am going to deep condition my hair the correct way from now on. I love your bun, Ms. Rosie!
omg thank you so much. i used to deep condition over night and i already have softer hair than usual so i can never really tell the difference but now i do. it feels better not deep conditioning over night.
where are the 5 BEST ways to deep condition? I am looking on your channel but I have yet to find it. I found the best way to MOISTURIZE but not deep condition. Is there one? Thanks in advance.
@Makda Haile Your concoction shouldn't cause any breakage because it doesn't contain water. Olive oil and mayo isn't protein either because it doesn't contain hydrolyzed protein. I don't think mayo has protein as a nutritional value either (less than a gram). You just have a really good hair mask that's full of olive oil and possibly biotin. Thanks for watching!.
well....ive been deep conditioning with an Herbal Essences conditioner with heat, for years now. And my hair is just fine. Ive also noticed quite a few deep conditioners that have literally the SAME ingredients in them as a normal conditioner does. I think the manufacturers just want to make money by slapping the word "deep" in front of the word conditioner, but i think its just best for everyone to find what works for them. But i dont think you should say its the "worst" way to deep condition your hair. Maybe instead say its just a different way to deep condition your hair. Everyone's hair is different and likes different things is really all im trying to say.
Hi +Autobots Attack Thanks for commenting and watching the video! This video was not intended for people to think that if they don't use a deep condition then they won't have hair. One doesn't have to use a deep conditioner to have long hair. Deep conditioners are used for sustainability. Yes, some deep conditioners and conditioners have similar ingredients. However, it doesn't make them one in the same. Deep conditioners tend to have a stronger cationic charge than regular conditioners. Deep conditioners are intense reparative treatments while conditioners are restorative.
+Ms Rosie Ahh okay. I couldnt really tell what you meant exactly in your video. Im not a hairstylist or trichologist by any means although i do know quite a bit about hair in general, and whatnot. But i didnt mean any harm or anything of the sort. I just always get hounded and asked tons of questions about my hair and a lot of people are determined to tell me that im wrong and what not you know ? And thanks for replying :)
Autobots Attack No offense taken hun. :) Even if you were a trichologist or hair stylist, people would still question if you're right or not. That's just human nature. However, the people that ask you questions can't get mad when you give them an answer that they wasn't expecting. If they knew the answer then they wouldn't be asking. So take that with a grain of salt. Yes, conditioners help to impart moisture and balance the hair's pH. Deep conditioner do the same thing, but it's on a deeper/intense level and it repairs the areas of the hair shaft that are damaged.
+Ms Rosie alright :) well thanks for the info :) and yea I kind of take everything with a grain of salt nowadays. And I do own some deep conditioners, and my hair always feel a bit stronger so that makes sense, I don't use them all the time though because my hair gets weighed down sometimes. But I love the way it makes my hair feel :) so it's a bit of just a balancing act in most cases. But thanks for the info :)
also, deep conditioning on dirty hair is no good. you're putting all that moisturizing goodness on hair that is clogged up on oil and dirt and product so the conditioner is never going to reach the inside of your hair strands
I'm happy I came across this video. My mother and grandmother used to say leaving conditioner in your hair would "rotten" it, so I was always skeptical on how ladies left conditioners in over night? Happy to see I've been deep conditioning the right way ☺️
This was really good and informative. What you said about deep conditioning over night is so true, When I did that my hair started breaking so bad and I couldn't figure out why because I was deep conditioning. However, by doing it overnight, I had protein overload. My hair wouldn't stop breaking. I am so glad I saw this for the other tips. It was not too wordy and I like how you get straight to the point.
zakiah tukes Great question! I am still in the process of understanding if coconut oil can be added to make a conditioner deeply penetrate. In the meantime, you can look at this article to better understand if it's possible www.thenaturalhavenbloom.com/2010/07/does-deep-conditioning-require-specific.html
I am going to have to disagree with about half the things you stated, simply because you're speaking in a generalized manner. Say someone is protein sensitive like myself and doesn't need to follow up with a protein products? So I'm doing everything wrong according to you? No hun. Also there are TONS of ladies on here with natural and relaxed hair that mix oils in their deep condition. Grape seed oil, and vitamin E oil, and coconut oil can be absorbed into the shaft fairly easy because of their low molecular weights. Sooooo all the long haired ladies who do that are also damaging their hair huh? And I deep condition over night EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. Have been for years now. And my hair has never been stronger. Also you should take into account of different porosity of hair. Everyone knows their hair better than anyone else. Just because deep conditioning over night or using an instant conditioner isn't an "adequate" method for you doesn't mean you should say it's damaging. A conditioner like Herbal Essences is an instant conditioner, however a TON of ladies on here use it as a deep condition MIXED with oils and they are sporting darn near waist length hair. I guess they're damaging their hair too huh? Seriously. Don't over generalize. Because even the manufacturer doesn't know someone's hair ,or how it reacts ,or what it needs ,and doesn't need. Yea I get they have directions for how to use it but many people are saavy and think outside the box. And their hair thanks them for it. Also what tends to help the hair more than anything is something with a low PH. It can be an instant conditioner or a mask or whatever. Also many products tend to contain the same ingredients. In different order but nonetheless, the same. So please, not everyone is the same. Keep that mind.
Decepticons Mobilize I never said that one couldn't mix oils into their conditioner. I said that using oils SOLELY as a deep conditioner is not beneficial. This is the third video you've commented on trolling. I am not speaking generally, I am speaking scientifically. If you leave keratin in a moist environment for a long periods of time, it will become soft and weak. That's not generally speaking, it is scientifically proven. That doesn't necessary mean that your hair is going to break off and you're going to be bald-headed forever. LOL It just means that the cuticle layer and cortex are weak. Also, if you know anything about the make-up of hair, you would know that exposing the cuticle structure to water for long periods of time is a no-no.
Again, thank you. Just like your videos, your responses are precise and very informational. Your videos are the most informational and straight to the point than any others I've seen. I have officially subscribed.
JazLytrice I have on 2 plastic grocery bags (because I didn't have any plastic caps) and 2 satin caps. Will that be good? I am just 15 soon to be 16 and I feel like I'm doing my hair all wrong. my mom now works 2 full time jobs and my hair is a mess since she doesn't have time to help me
This is really helpful. Today was my first time deep conditioning and I used heat as well for 1 hour. Then I left it in with no heat for another hour. My hair literally felt like plastic after and I couldn't figure out why. It was breaking like crazy when I was trying to de-tangle it and it was overall a hot mess.
I'm glad that this was helpful. Sorry that happened to you. A light protein treatment like ORS Replenishing conditioner should help with your hair regaining its strength.
I was just about to deep condition my hair overnight thinking that it would help keep my hair hydrated to where it needs to be and i'm so glad I watched this before actually going through with it, thank you for posting ( : very informative !
Thanx for your valuable educated information, I'm a new sub and have already watched all your videos and try to like them all as well as I remember. Because of you I've finally learned the value of oil treatments, how to and when to do them. I also found out that all this time I have been deep conditioning w/the wrong conditioner, my hair is colored and is in pretty good condition as I haven't used and heat since I've had it colored, but there's always still room for improvement. I really appreciate your channel and I hope you strive and succeed well gurl!
Thanks for sharing information that I found to be very helpful. I'm sitting here now with a conditioner/light protein mix (ORS Replenish Conditioner, and ORS Mayonnaise) in my hair, and before I rinsed it out, I wanted to see what others are saying about using a conditioner after rinsing out the conditioner and protein. Before I started with my hair today, I watched a video where one young lady talked about how she uses the conditioner and light protein (w/ oils), and someone pointed out in the comments that you should always use a moisturizing conditioner after you've finished. I've read that from two people today, so I'm giving it a shot. Thanks again! Gotta go rinse! :)
I'm glad that you've been of help. :) I've done this treatment twice before, and didn't know that I was supposed to use a conditioner afterward. Yikes! Thankfully, I learned before I did it a third time. My hair did feel softer this time, too. :) I also appreciate that you take time to answer so many of the questions asked in the comment section. That's very nice. Thanks again. :)
@Taylor Atkins There may have been an ingredient in the deep conditioner that caused irritation because it was left on too long. The product seems to be a moderate protein treatment, so you'll want to do a moisturizing deep condition to counteract any adverse effects.
I actually bought a creme of nature mango & She's butter ultra - moisturising conditioner and I used it last night under my heat cap for 15mins it's amazing the smell is just off the chain......I'm still in search for a deep conditioner thou. thanx for your reply. we do have loads of Ors products and also creme of nature.
I see some naturals deep conditioning with Herbal Essence Conditioner (blue bottle) which contains Sodium Hydroxide (relaxer) in the ingredients, and loving the softness and slip, not realizing that it is the chemicals breaking down the hair causing the fake results. Thanks for the vid, very good info.
Hey jenntopp1 Great observation! I could see why one would come to that conclusion. However, many chemicals serve multiple purposes. Sodium hydroxide is used in lye relaxers for alkalinity and to straighten the hair. In other solutions like the Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Conditioner, it acts a pH adjuster. Also, the sodium hydroxide in that solution is in a concentration lower than 1%, so it doesn't have the ability to actually alter the hair's proteins since the solution itself isn't alkaline (higher than 7 on a pH scale).
Makes sense! My husband gets so annoyed when we're in the store bc I actually READ things when we go shopping. Lol I never really understood until I paid attention. Like there is a difference b/t the shampoos and conditioners.
AT LAST!!!! Fantastic information that makes absolute sense, there has been so many methods on youtube it can be overwhelming. I'm very pleased to say that I follow all the methods you suggested :-)
What a fantastic and informative video! Thank you for the great info. I subscribed to you. We might not have the same hair type, but I am bound to gain knowledge!
I really appreciate this video. My hair is super fine and anything can weigh my hair down. I know im on the opposite end of the spectrum but I think this still applies.
OMGoodness! I'm so happy I found you! I recently started deep conditioning my hair over night and noticed a lot of breakage. I had no idea that doing that could even cause breakage. I'm glad I just watched your video because I darn sure was about to wash, condition and put in my deep conditioner and get readuy to take it down. Thank you so much!!!! Glad to be a new subbie :)
Thanks for this video I have extremely dry hair with crazy breakage and I always leave my conditioner in over night ....smh now I know why nothings changing lol thnx again
That was an Excellent video sistah. You were able to cover all of the relevant reasons and give a quick synapsis of how everything works. LOVED it girl. Thanks for all the information, which I will be applying to my routine. Again lady great video :}
I think it's vital to do what works...my hair has responded positively to some of these "don'ts." I definitely see why this information is valuable to others, though. Thanks!
I think deep conditioning over night just depends on your type been good to me I don't do it often though I only when I'm really tired from work
Straight to the point thank you I'm glad to see someone without all that excessive talking
Hey +Amara Thomas Oil is fine to leave in hair overnight. It's the water-based conditioners that weakens hair.
This video is still very informative never the less....she not EXACTLY wrong. On the other hand not every ones hair is the same and don't respond in the same manner with every product...do what works for you ladies! It's a journey for a reason..

Toria Abraham don't be worried becuz in the morning just wash your hair with warm water first than cold water your hair will be fine😅
_ Kylie Xo _ Thank you so much!! I DC last time over night and it helped my hair a lot. Because it is normally so dry. Thx 4 sharing!!! I found this VERY informative!!! Now you have got to share your favorite conditioners :)
Thank you & I will definitely do that.
OMG I'm so glad I watched this... I have been experiencing excessive breakage and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know I need to stop deep conditioning overnight! Thanks so much

Yay!! I cant wait! Thank you!
So helpful informative and insightful thank you!
very good information and i agree with everything you said
+Ruth Paige Thanks hun!!
Okay. Eye opening!!!! Please make videos on how to effectively moisturize and deep condition because my hair is a desert of breakage
I will have a video up soon on different methods of moisturizing & another video on reasons why your hair is dry. Thanks so much for watching!
@Makda Haile Your concoction shouldn't cause any breakage because it doesn't contain water. Olive oil and mayo isn't protein either because it doesn't contain hydrolyzed protein. What deep conditioners do you recommend using after using a protein deep conditioner
Bri Any moisturizing deep conditioner is fine. I personally like the TGIN Honey Miracle Mask and SheaMoisture's Honey and Manuka Mask.
+Ms Rosie thanks I'll be sure to try them
summer young It's perfectly fine to use silicone, as long as you don't let it build up on your hair and use the proper cleanser to remove it.
I think you should ONLY prepoo with oil...like coconut oil! :) Good Luck :) for happy healthy hair!!
I'm so guilty of overnight deep conditioning and my hair lacks volume. Could this be a contributing factor? Awesome video...thanks!
Yes, it may be the culprit as deep conditioning for long periods of time can cause limp hair.
well....ive been deep conditioning with an Herbal Essences conditioner with heat, for years now. And my hair is just fine.
Thanks so much!
Dope brows.
dkcmusic Thanks luv!
I'm glad I came across your video, I was just about to do an overnight deep conditioning. Newbie mistake. Thanks for the insight!
You're welcome! ShezaRN Thanks for watching!
zakiah tukes Great question! I am still in the process of understanding if coconut oil can be added to make a conditioner deeply penetrate. In the meantime, you can look at this article to better understand if it's possible www.thenaturalhavenbloom.com/2010/07/does-deep-conditioning-require-specific.html
Thank you so much for this video! I didn't realize all of the things I've been doing wrong. Very informational!
Thanks, have really learnt a lot about hair.
Ammina Rose I am scared because I am deep conditioning overnight right now and I'm scared I'll wake up bald. Can you please help me?
Again, thank you. Just like your videos, your responses are precise and very informational. Your videos are the most informational and straight to the point than any others I've seen. I have officially subscribed.
You are so welcome & thanks for your support!
I'm guilty of DC over night
Lol.
JazLytrice I am scared because I am deep conditioning overnight right now and I'm scared I'll wake up bald. Can you please help me?
JazLytrice I have on 2 plastic grocery bags (because I didn't have any plastic caps) and 2 satin caps. Will that be good? I am just 15 soon to be 16 and I feel like I'm doing my hair all wrong. my mom now works 2 full time jobs and my hair is a mess since she doesn't have time to help me
Yes that's good. Whatever suits you. I usually do one plastic bag and a cap but my hair isn't long so it's good
This is really helpful.
What a detailed video! Thanks for the info!
Thank you for these videos and going into such detail. Also REALLY appreciate the transcript below - really helps!
You are so welcome!! Thanks for taking the time out to watch my videos!!!
G Sanai Mixing deep conditioners are fine. Just make sure that you're going to use it right away to not cause the preservatives to become imbalanced.
I was just about to deep condition my hair overnight thinking that it would help keep my hair hydrated to where it needs to be and i'm so glad I watched this before actually going through with it, thank you for posting ( : very informative !
You're so welcome!
Dbaiely Awww, thanks so much!!!
They were so right. Thanks for watching luv!
I'm glad that you've been of help. :)
I've done this treatment twice before, and didn't know that I was supposed to use a conditioner afterward. Yikes! Thankfully, I learned before I did it a third time. My hair did feel softer this time, too. :)
I also appreciate that you take time to answer so many of the questions asked in the comment section. That's very nice.
Thanks again. :)
You are very welcome!
@Taylor Atkins There may have been an ingredient in the deep conditioner that caused irritation because it was left on too long. The product seems to be a moderate protein treatment, so you'll want to do a moisturizing deep condition to counteract any adverse effects.
What a great video! So informative. Thanks a lot!
Glad that you've found this helpful! Thanks for watching!! :)
Wow you learn something new everyday thanks great post
Thanks so much for watching!
Very informative video. Thanks so much for the tips!
April Pinkett You're welcome & thanks for watching!
Lots of good info. Esp the last. Water breaks the hydrogen bonds in your hair which is why it's more effective.

Yes! I forgot about Creme of Nature. The Creme of Nature Argan Oil Intensive Conditioning Treatment is a nice deep conditioner too.
You have made so much since. I just done my hair with highlights. So you already know I need lots of leave in and conditioner. Lol . Thank you.
Great information . . . i learned a lot. Thank you.
Thank you. I just went natural and this was very informational.
PogoQueen Thanks!!!

I really appreciate this video. My hair is super fine and anything can weigh my hair down. I know im on the opposite end of the spectrum but I think this still applies.
Also I just tried Hask shampoo (macadamia oil) and the keratin shampoo. Its worked beautifully.
