I HAVE to wash my hair with sulfate every week. My hair has so much build up n I get really itchy dirty scalp! once I started using sulfate free shampoos it seems like it was making my hair dryer! I just follow with a hydrating shampoo and a deep conditioner
I forgot to mention that concentrating your cleansing product on your hair instead of your scalp is a no no. Always wash your scalp first and during the rinse, the cleanser will glide down your strands and gently wash them as well. Let me know what you like about this video!
What i LOVE about your videos is you say like do this or do that and the you explain WHY! Im that type of person i wont just do something coz you tell me to, i gots to know WHY! ..... WHAT IS THE REASON! *Cardi B voice *
Hi! I love all this info! For ppl who don't like to wash their hair because they don't want to mess up their braids or twists. Can you talk about the science behind why it's important to wash your hair in relation to scalp build up and slow hair growth? Plssss 😀
Hi!, I am thinking of starting a natural hair care regimen. I love your videos I found them very informative and I have learnt a lot from several of your videos :) Lots of love from London! :)
boy the hot water part just hit me a month ago. i color my hair and I've been natural for a long time and I've had hair that was healthy and i would color it and it would be fine for a while. but i wash my hair with the hottest water cuz i shower that way and after my big chop a month ago i researched about water temperature and hair and i realized that i was burning up my already colored hair. because i took such great care of my hair i never understood why my was experiencing such damage and i finally got it and saved the heat for special days cuz i got eczema too so my skin was suffering also. as for acv i do that once a month and i mix that thing up because that stuff is strong.
Taneisha White I was like that for a long time too. I now use tepid to cool water. It has helped me to retain moisture and detangle my hair more easily. Thanks for watching luv!
Wowwwww,.. I swear I thought I knew how to wash my hair. Apparently not lol. Great info. Thank You so much for making this video, lord knows I needed it.
Ms Rosie I swear your videos are everything lol... I have a few questions sorry if they are too long but I jus started my hair regimen about 2wks ago and I jus recently trimmed my ends like a month ago but the middle and back is the shortest due to my unhealthy hair habits. I was wondering should I leave it alone and let it grow or cut it even all the way around? Also should I do a protein treatment before or after a relaxer and if so how long before or after ? And last question as far as protecting the already processed hair can I use Vaseline on all the processed hair, and my scalp ?? Lol ok I'm done. =) I think lol.
Hi Tee Thanks so much for watching my videos! Congrats on your new hair journey! For aesthetic purposes, you may want to trim your hair to one length. However, if you've just gotten a trim, then you may not need to cut all of your hair to one length. Just make sure that you baby those areas to prevent more breakage. A week prior to relaxing, if your hair is healthy or experiencing mild breakage, then you can opt for a light protein or moderate protein respectively. If you're experiencing excessive breakage, do an intense protein treatment and wait until your hair is back to normal before proceeding to do a relaxer. Do a protein treatment post relaxer with a light protein treatment. Yes, you can use Vaseline on those areas. I would suggest applying it lightly on the scalp so that it won't prevent the relaxer from taking. Hope that this helps!
Thanks! tgin Honey Miracle Mask (DC) and Herbal Essence Hello Hydration are my faves. Products sans silicone As I Am Hydration Elation (DC) and Alaffia Everyday Coconut Conditioner, Coconut Lime are great too.
Hi Ms Rosie, I have a question. If I use cones in my hair, and use a sulfate free shampoo, How would I get rid of the cones from lets say leave-in conditioners and other products that have cones in them. Wouldn't that build up on the hair if you continue to use sulfate free shampoo or cleansers? I'm just a little confused!
Hey Kathi Sorden I can understand why you are confused. It was confusing to me as well. Any cleanser that has cleansing agents will cleanse cones from hair. However, some cleansing agents take longer than others. Sulfates can cleanse cones within 1-2 washes while a cleansing conditioner may take 6-8 washes to completely remove the cones. There are other cleansing agents that are normally found in sulfate-free formulas that can also remove cones within 1-2 washes such as Sodium C14 Olefin Sulfonate and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. A good rule of thumb is to use the cleanser from the line that your cone-filled products come from to prevent product build up. But if that line happens to have sulfates in their cleanser and that's not your preference, either use cones 1-2 times between wash days or find a cleanser with one or two of the ingredients that I mentioned. Naturally curly has a great list for cleansing agents here: www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/no-poo/curlchemist-what-makes-a-cleansing-ingredient-more-harsh-or-more-gentle/?page=2
hello ms Rosie, i have a question. i Just cut my hair real low (BC) a month ago and i use a sulfate free shampoo once every month but i co wash my hair every day and deep condition once a week. is this a healthy practice?
Black Chakra If you're not experiencing any breakage or weakened hair, then you should be fine. I personally wouldn't suggest washing your hair every day as that is a lot of manipulation. But if it's working for you then keep doing it. I bet your hair is super soft. Lol
Hey Ms Rosie, I use a moisturizing sulfate shampoo. I'm actually trying to use it all up before I buy what u had recommended (sulfate free shampoo or cleanser). What conditioner/or instant conditioner would you recommend to use before shampooing to prevent the hair from drying out from sulfate shampoo? Or would oil be better to use instead of a conditioner?
HeyKathi Sorden You can use oil or conditioner as a pre-poo treatment, they're both great. You're doing a good thing by using a moisturizing sulfate shampoo because it's not as stripping as most sulfate shampoos. I think you're fine in using that if it's not drying out your hair. However, if you want to use a sulfate-free shampoo, that's perfect too. My video "Hair Products: Using Bad Ingredients" talks more about how to incorporate sulfates into a healthy hair regimen.ruclips.net/video/WTCey2YjF8s/видео.html
I deep condition only with a conditioner on Thursday and shampoo, condition, and deep condition my hair on Sunday. Would that damage my hair's cuticles? I only do it because my hair is very moisturized throughout the week and helps me retain moisture, without necessarily sealing with an oil.
Oohhh don't wash hair in a circular motion...👀 it feels good though, especially with that scalp massager 😂😂 but imma stop now, coz i know why not to do that 😊😊
christine1962ful I personally like bentonite clay as a mud wash. Mix it with water and a little bit of aloe vera juice or apple cider vinegar (optional).
Hello. i am trying to go natural and grow my hair, i haven't permed my hair since last june. I was just wondering if my hair regimen sounds correct?my hair regimen is • Cocoanut oil&Castor oil 2x's a week ,Suave/vo5 conditioner 1x a week, & deep condition 1x a week, Shampoo 1x a month&wear Cornrows for a month(for a protective hairstyle. and leave in conditioner after every wash) i was just curious because Im afraid of product build up since i only shampoo once a month and i mainly use conditioners. Also Im not sure if I'm doing this correctly bc i i wear cornrows everytime i wash, deep condition, leave in conditioner and put the oils in my hair, I dont know if its a good idea to do all of these steps with cornrows, like im not sure if it will have a good impact on my hair or not
If you haven't experienced build up, then don't worry about it. However, using cowashes with silicones can cause product build up. So steer clear of those if you shampoo wash once a month. Exactly how do you moisturize your hair in between wash days? Wearing the corn rows every month is fine, as long as they're not pulled too tight.
For gray hair I would suggest moisturizing shampoos and deep conditioners to keep it hydrated and the elasticity intact. I'm not sure if you're 40 or above, but if you are, I suggest Silica to combat hair thinning. Bamboo Tea is the best way to get it.
You know what, I take that back. Though Bamboo tea is a great source for Silica, it's not the best way. It's best over the tablet form because the tablet form can take months to absorb into our system. I get mine from bambooleaftea.net. However, I am currently researching other places where I can get it from because $16 for a 30 day supply is a bit much to me for tea. I suggest reading this article: www.alive.com/articles/view/19800/silica-the_forgotten_nutrientIt it explains the food sources for Silica like horsetail tea, oats, beets, etc. Silica is definitely a vitamin that is needed as we age. It's not only essential for hair health, but overall health. I felt so much better after drinking the tea and I noticed less hair shedding.
Again thank you!! On my way to Trader Joe's to try the tea tree tingling conditioner. Bad problem with itching, it's been a problem for me for years. I really love that you respond promptly. Also I want to find the book you recommended about black hair. Off I go.....
You're very welcome! I've heard good things about that conditioner. An itchy scalp usually means dry scalp. I just did a video on that. I like to put a few drops of 100% pure lavender oil into a tablespoon of jojoba oil and massage my scalp with that. The lavender stops the itching while the jojoba oils nourishes and soothes the scalp. You can find The Science of Black Hair online or at Barnes & Noble.
Decepticons Mobilize You have once again missed the point while you were busy trolling. That wasn't the point of this video. You clearly aren't a subscriber as you would've known that I cowash my hair solely too. Cowash only method is called the curly girl method which is what I follow. Stop trolling boo.....
I have a question about sulfate free shampoos. I use a black rinse b/c I have a lot of gray and I'm also relaxed/tex laxed. I have always used a sulfate shampoo. I noticed that every sulfate shampoo I've used takes the rinse out of my hair after two washes. What sulfate free shampoo would you recommend for relaxed color treated?
Hey Kathi Sorden I would suggest all-natural shampoos to prevent the rinse from being rinsed out quickly. A few good ones is SheaMoisture Retention Shampoo (yellow label) and Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture Shampoo. Another option to make the moisture last longer is cleansing conditioners.
I personally like the As I am Leave-In Conditioner. Other recommendations include Giovanni Direct Leave-In Conditioner or Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner.
I tried washing my hair in the shower and my eyes were blood shot red, not to mention when I tilt my head back it feels as though I am falling backwards.
I'm doing something wrong. I tried to deep condition my hair yesterday and once I was done and let it air dry it felt dry and scalp was itchy. So many good videos but I'm getting confused lol
cee dacosta If you're cleansing your hair twice, using a moisturizing shampoo is an option. However, it's not necessary and you can either shampoo twice with the clarifying shampoo, if needed, and proceed with a rinse-out conditioner or deep conditioner.
I dont do anything to my hair in between wash days. I just wash it with conditioners and put cocanut oil and castor oil in my hair when im done washing. Im not exactly sure what to use in order to moisturize my hair bc at first i thought i could use lave in conditioner as a moisturizer but I heard it was bad to use leave in conditioner as a moisturizer. Do you have any suggestions?
Leave-in conditioners are perfectly fine to use as a moisturizer. Just make sure that you're using a moisturizing leave-in. I personally like to use regular filtered water, As I Am Leave-In Conditioner, and SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie as moisturizers.
i am confused abt alkanin or acidic no-poo , can you pls explain here . i can't hear ya i am deaf. i am not worry abt other thing because i don't use sulfcent or whatever. only thing i do is no-poo and your quoting that states not washing in one direction. When you're cleansing your scalp, it's best to work your hands in an up & down motion instead of circles to prevent tangles and possible breakage. For the hair itself, smooth the product in your hair onto your hair in a downward motion (root to tip) instead of piling it on top of your head to help smooth the cuticle and prevent tangles and breakage. It's best to wash your hair in the shower or in a way that the water hits your scalp first and flows to the ends of the hair. Anything that is too alkaline or too acidic isn't good for hair. The ideal pH for hair products is between 3.5-7. Hair is naturally 4-5. Alkaline products like baking soda causes the cuticles to lift and swells the hair shaft which alters the hair's porosity. This makes the hair more prone to breakage. Acidic products makes the hair shaft contract. If the product is too acidic like vinegar, the hair can dissolve overtime. With no poo products, it's important to mix them properly to assure that it has the proper pH (3.5-7). For instance, baking soda is a 9 on the pH scale. One should mix it with water (pH 7) and apple cider vinegar (3) or aloe vera juice (3) to bring the pH down. I wouldn't advise just mixing water with the baking soda because water isn't acidic enough to bring down the pH to be applied to hair. The same thing goes with acidic ingredients. If it's too acidic, mix it with something more alkaline, preferably water to prevent it from dissolving the hair. Know that the pH numbers for products stated above isn't always that number for that specific products. pH can change and that's why it's important to have pH strips. For instance, water normally has a pH of 7, but if the water is hard or isn't filtered properly, it could have a pH of 8 or 9.
