  • “(Walkin’ Thru The) Sleepy City” by The Rolling Stones
    Composers: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards
    Lyrics:
    Walkin' thru’ the sleepy city
In the dark it looks so pretty
Til I got to the one cafe
That stays open night and day
Just-a lookin' at the sleepy city
In the night it looks so pretty
No one sees the city lights
They just care about the warmth inside
No one listens to what people say
I just sit and hear the radio play
Just then this girl walked in my way
And she was as pretty as my sleepy city and
Will you walk thru’ the sleepy city?
In the night it looks so pretty
Tired of walkin' on my own
It looks better when you're not alone
    Oh Yeah
Will you walk thru’ the sleepy city?
In the night it looks so pretty
I'm tired of walkin' on my own
It looks better when you're not alone
    Mm mmm hmm mm
    Mm hmm mmm mmmm
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
Will you walk thru’ the sleepy city?
In the night, well it looks so pretty
I'm tired of walkin' on my own
It looks better when you're not alone
C’mon walk thru’ that sleepy city
I said in the night it looks so pretty
I'm tired of walkin' that park on my own
It looks better when you're not alone
    Whoa whoa whoa
    La la la la
    Oooooh
    La la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Aaaahhh... Those passageways, marvelous alleys... they seem to come out of 'Face To Face' and 'Something Else'... authentic odes to London in the 60's. A very good attempt to emulate the wonderful sepia vignettes that Ray Davies bestowed on us during the Kinks' epiphanic 1965-69 period.

It’s 1964 and the Stones haven’t had their break thru hit Satisfaction yet. While committed to a blues r&b rock n roll vibe, Andrew is all over Mick and Keith to write pop songs and this is a sample of their early results. It’s okay, but it’s not really a Stones tune and it gets shelved until Klein releases it in the 70s on his “I’m gonna milk every dollar I can out of the Stones” legal former manager revenge tour. Come to think of it, while fun - these lyric videos are more of the same. (Even though I enjoy em).

I've loved this track for as long as I can remember. But I always thought this song must be from a year (or even two) after '64...
Definitely connect with Ray Davies and his glorious period 1965-69 as a British social commentator... London poet par excellence. The sound, the atmosphere, the arrangements... Even that typical urban perfume in the lyrics...
Despite not reflecting so much Anglocentrism... unquestionably the boys were ready to listen to 'Face To Face' and 'Something Else'... and of course the singles from that time...
      Shamelessly Kinks.

I have this album on vinyl got in 1976 when I was 15. Cost $4.99 ( Canadian Montreal) I loved it the Stones weren’t thrilled cause it was put out by their ex manager Allen Klein the songs were out takes and he had the rights to them. He also did a number on the Beatles in 1968.

Yes..!!! I agree 100%. 'Face to Face' (1966) and even 'Something Else' (1967)... But the amazing thing is that this track is (apparently) an original demo from 1964...!! And it should be remembered that at that time Davies and the Kinks were still in their previous stage: inventing distortion, Hard Rock, Proto Punk, Proto Metal, Raga Rock (eastern drones), controlled feedback... And this Stones jewel is (always supposedly) an outtake that remained unpublished for more than ten years!!

Jagger & Richards didn't really care for writing and singing pretty pop songs. This is very poppy and doesn't even hint at the Rock Classics both of them would produce in the following couple of years. Still, though, this is interesting if only for what was to come afterwards. It's a damn gorgeous video though.

I am convinced that the date of 1964, which is indicated as the record session of this outtake, is an error. There is nothing during that period, neither immediately before nor immediately after, that sounds like this. And I'm not referring to the 'upgrade' that was made to edit it in 1975... It simply has to belong to another era... at least 1966... And then there is the matter of the Kinks circa 1966-67 sounding irresistibly... With its imprint of an urban costumbrista story... sooo Davies from the LPs Face to Face and Something Else...

It doesn't fit anywhere else , though, does it? I can just about see it after or around Satanic Majesties, musically. Even in 66 it still doesn't make sense, compared to their output that year.
I'm going to accept 64, and the "demo for a pop song" explanation, because Occam has a razor.
