    A real cute component of the EVAP system is the fuel tank pressure sensor. On my '11 Outback it is hidden way up over the rear axle and tucked away pretty good. Mine failed and set the code and I spent a couple hours replacing it in an area where snow-belt corrosion makes work so, so easy. LOLOL! I performed a smoke check with a hillbilly setup that uses Johnson's Baby Oil - easy to see and smell when there's a leak. Great video on an obscure but pretty important nightmare of a system.

      Subaru engine was off a 2000 out back it's a subaru swap in my 86 vw vanagon. It does have a few codes of fuel pressure and tank code if I install a code killer with that help.

    yep, don't use the cheap fuel with the lots of ethanol in it. It is unbelievable how the government gets way with destroying cars with their road salt and ethanol gas...

    Great video my 2003 Forester X has that code, but the shop concluded it's a wiring issue up over the rear crossmember above the fuel tank.
    Changed the purge valve, the car would flood every time you added gas, been chasing that code for a few years, and the wiring is what the shop is telling me.
    That's the only code and everything is working, so I drive my commuter Subaru around with a check engine light on.

    This was a great start to understanding the evap system. I would love to see a video on the shutoff system. I've had a few that the charcoal canister, blowing the lines out, and/ or purge fixed but others where it didn't help

    @HouseCallAutoRepair 7 месяцев назад +8

    Let's not forget the IMAGINARY leak...
    You know... The one where the purge valve pulls vacuum, on a perfectly sealed system, but the stuck pressure sensor makes the computer NOT SEE the vacuum/pressure change. It assumes there is a leak.

    Thank you so much for this video! Had my car smell like fuel about six months ago. They replaced the charcoal filter and it was fine. Six months later the same thing happened. They have done this test on the vehicle amongst others several times and never found any issue. We'll see what happens!

    • @plleger6
      @plleger6 7 месяцев назад +3

      Maybe the purge valve is stuck close and didn't drain the canister. That cause the canister to be full of fuel vapor and cause the smell if never drained. I don't tell its your issue but it need to be checked

      @@plleger6 That was what I was beginning to suspect after watching the video, great to hear I wasn't the only one. Of course there's several other places to look too but that's a solid start! thx

    Wow thanks! Just purchased a forester 2008, and drove it 500 some miles. Temp recently dropped to freezing and now I have an EVAP CEL. Annoying since cruise is disabled, but glad to hear it’s not “serious”. Subscribed to find out the fix for this, thanks!

      The smoke machines have an expandable part that can go into your intake for example and seal it up enough to send smoke other places

    Fixed a similar code on a 06 XT. Fuel cut valves on top of the tank had cracks at the hose nipples. Using my nose helped find this issue.😊

    Rust belt vehicles are notorious for those lines and mounts around the evap canister being rusted anf crusty.

    When ever I fix a vehicles evap leak if it's not the cap but if it's original or aftermarket I always install them a new OEM cap to save future issues so they don't see me for awhile.

    On my 2007 XT, that code has come and gone for the last 2 plus years. A shop has replaced the canister 3 times. Lucky they give me a 2 year warranty on their work.

    Dealing with this issue also. Smell of gas inside and outside the car. Replaced the gas cap, replaced the fuel pump. I’m thinking the purge valve is bad. Problem is no idea where it’s at on a 06 tribeca. Also has my sport light blinking even though i did an ATF change. Don’’t know if the mechanic changed out the internal or external filter though.

    I've heard that "topping up" when fueling can flood the charcoal canister, leading to the need for a repair/new charcoal canister. Is that correct?

    Hey, I stumbled across this video and I found it quite ironic because I also have an EVAP leak on my Subaru. I don't know if you'll ever see this but I have a 2007 Subaru Impreza and there were a couple worrying problems with it so I ended up going to a certified tech for some help and they diagnosed me with a leaking EVAP canister vent value with a hefty price tag to fix. I was wondering if you knew where the EVAP canister vent valve would be located so I could potentially DIY it given I'm in college and not at the best place financially. Thank you.

    Robert, isn't the evap system why you do not top off your tank especially in hot weather?.

    • @MrSubaru1387
      @MrSubaru1387  7 месяцев назад

      Correct, jogging the pump can over fill the tank and cause liquid fuel to flow into the charcoal canister.
