This is a DIY how-to on replacing the CVT Fluid as per the Nissan FSM outlines, and replacing the 2 transmission filters on a 2013-2018 5th gen. Nissan Altima. Sorry it got a bit long, just wanted to be as thorough as possible. This is a follow-up to my original CVT fluid replacement video:

Torque specs:
Filter Housing bolts = Wrist tight
Strainer filter bolts = 70 in/lbs
Pan bolts = 70 in/lbs
Overflow bolt 89 in/lbs
Drain Plug + crush washer = 25 ft/lbs

Even with the car running his voice was louder. Most maintenance content creators don’t pay attention to the audio balancing like that. Super helpful I just bought a 2016 Altima and have no idea if it has or hasn’t had the transmission serviced so I’m just gonna go ahead and do the job it’s at 96,000 and runs pretty well but I know it could be better

I changed my cvt FLUID & FILTER and it was worth it. I would not just change the fluid because when you take the transmission pan off. The magnets inside catch a lot of gunky metal that are on them. (150k plus cars that hasn’t had a fluid change EVER disregard this message) the problem is the longer those metals sit they become part of the fluid with excessive heat cycles, flushing the Fluid OR changing the Filters won’t get all those gunky metals out running throughout your trans.
The reason I did this service was because I was experiencing slips and stutter & short pause delay shifting into Reverse.
I found out the reason it slips and stutters FOR ME is only when I’m accelerating at low RPM the torque converter starts to LOCK UP.
All Issues resolved after this service 😎( Minor slips when Foot On gas pedal entering a light throttle)

My Nissan Technician told me when the warranty expired do the change ever 100k miles. As of right now I have 291k miles on my 2013 Nissan Altima and I've have change the fluid as follow. 291K so far with no issue on The CVT transmission and motor. I do my own work since warranty expired

@@TheOriginalBeeCee I am experiencing slipping right now and my car is getting a catalytic convertor/oxygen sensor code. I just replaced my air cabin filter because I saw that could be a problem but its still having the same issues but not as bad. This is the first time this happened and my car stalled out on me and the battery light came on too. My battery connectors aren’t the best so it doesn’t get a good connection. Any advice? I am pretty new to all this stuff

Best Video I have ever seen on this topic. Thanks for taking the time and editing all the OEM items in between. CVT gets a bad rap because most people do not service their transmissions or service them incorrectly. If serviced regularly it should work as a fine tuned machine.

Thanks for a great tutorial. You are the first YT video that shows both filters, most people miss or skip the canister filter. I need to change transmission oil for my 2011 & 2015 Altima.

Thanks for a great, comprehensive video tutorial. The Nissan instructions say to refill with 2 5/8 imperial quarts (3 liters). Note that imperial (British) quarts are a little more than a liter, whereas US quarts are slightly less than a liter each. So if refilling with US quarts, you would need a little over 3 quarts with each refill.
Yes, 3.55 litres to an imperial gallon

This is definitely the best video on the Altima CVT fluid change. I wondered how to get fluid in it, there has to be a better way then that little rinky dink dipstick hole. LOL. Now I know the proper way. We purchased the car new now we have 65k on it. No issues. Great video thanks again.

Great vid, super informative you may want to add flushing the trans cooler located in driver side fender well as it has more fluid and a spot to hold debris. Great job keep it up as they are known for issues best to clear out as much of the old ns3 fluid

The 2016 Nissan Altima transmission strainer is different for anyone who has one. The part number for it is 31728-28X0A. Every other part fits the bill. Thanks for the video!

After researching parts to attempt this, the 2016 Altima 3.5 SL transmission strainer filter is 31726-29X0A. All else appears to be the same!
This is the gold standard when it comes to nissan cvt fluid change. I deliberately took my 2015 xtrail/rogue to an authorized nissan service in jakarta and they skipped alot of steps as recommended in the service manual. They drained n filled the fluid twice. It took 7 litres of ns3. Didnt even touched the overfilled plug. Didnt check the oil temp. Just ran through the gears a couple of times n they were done. The car was about 100k kilometers. Two thumbs up for this great diy video

There is a recall on certain nissan transmission if you have under 88k I highly recommend it they put you a brand new one in for free

Awesome video. Nissan repeatedly told me I don't have to change the filter, just do a "flush" and they NEVER told me about the cartridge filter. They only referred to the metal pickup in the pan.
I have since gone to Nissan and told them I want the cartridge filter changed (I even had the part number thanks to you) and the mechanic afterwards said to me "nobody ever changes those but it's a good idea yours was dirty"
For some reason the sales team doesn't inform customers however the mechanics know that this should be done.

Yup. The lack of knowledge and information surrounding the fluid changes on these CVT’s is extremely high.
You can go to 3 different dealers and i bet they all tell you something different, and will only recommend or inform you they just do spill and fills if not tell you that the fluid is lifetime.
There is some idiot who keeps commenting on this video saying his local dealer told him this process will ruin the transmission, as well as “called nissan USA” and they said the same thing lol. Like a major manufacturer is going to put themselves legally at risk and tell you what you can and cant do DIY-wise……of course they are gonna say dont do it 🤣 this video is straight from nissans own FSM, but its going to ruin the transmission according to the customer service rep @ Nissan USA 🤣🤣🙄
An excellent "By the Book" video. I will be changing the trans fluid in my Rogue. I know that there will be differences, but you clearly illustrate the general procedure.

This is the only RUclips video that shows how to do this service properly. Everyone else I see doing this is spreading misinformation. I'll never do this myself because I'm lazy, but thanks for showing this to the world... I do a drain and refill every 3 years or 30k miles at my local dealership. Runs about 260 bucks.

To think that straight out of the assembly line these CVT transmissions are made to fail & some are actually very low on fluid causing them to overheat. I personally would flush the system prior to filter replacement. Regardless thank you for sharing & thank you for doing it to specs. Quality work right here & I just subscribed 💯

Did this a few years back on my 2010 Altima and posted the info and parts on a Nisan Forum. 2010 and other years do not show a filter available or listed. Took some research to find the correct filter part number. Had to cross reference different vehicles and manufacturers that used the same transmission as they did had a filter replacement and part number. Well worth doing despite the pleated filter looking very good with only a few very small metal particles inside.
For 07-12 Nissan the small pleated cvt filter part is 31726-1XFOO or Mitsubishi 2824A006. The o'ring can be reused or Mitsubishi 2920A096. It is simply an o'ring and does not have gasket material attached to it as the one in this video. I could not find the Nissan part for the o'ring but one "may be" available. I made a two trips to the dealership discussing replacing these parts, looking through their manuals, and they thought I was crazy thinking these items were serviceable.

Excuse my cynicism, but I doubt one in a hundred dealership techs would go through this procedure. If they do it would Costco a small fortune in fluid, parts and labor. That being said, thanks for laying out the whole procedure so thoroughly.

Awesome, the way that you explain all the video, I wish the mechanics in my area were like you, I will learn from you and continue to maintain my truck as I have been doing with other aspects. For those uninitiated, when installing a gasket on a vertical face in awkward spaces, a dab of gasket sealant on opposite sides of the gasket on the trans side will eliminate the worry of it slipping or getting cocked when putting the cover back on
hey, man, great video, always appreciate the Altima content. Thanks for demonstrating the factory procedure. I have a 2016 with almost 56,000 miles. I've been doing drain and fills, the first one at 36,000 miles ( a double drain and fill, running through the gears), then 45,000 and just did one at 55,500. I drain the fluid when cold, and almost exactly 4 quarts comes out. I put in exactly what came out, pouring it down the dipstick tube. So far no issues with my CVT. I plan on doing a 4 quart drain and fill every 12 months to keep the fluid fresh. Haven't thought about changing the filters, but now I think I can wait a while, especially since you went 150, 000 on your original filters. I drive this thing like an old lady, so I think that helps as well.
Now, I have a request for another video: I'd like to change my power steering fluid soon, but it seems we can't do the "turkey baster method" since there seems to be a plastic part in the way when you remove the reservoir cap. Any thoughts on how to replace the fluid? I imagine you can remove one of the hoses and get it done, but would appreciate watching someone like you do it first. Thanks again for the great content!
Hey Glenn, thanks for the comment! Good to hear how proactive you’ve been with the fluid changes. And yea I would suggest doing the filter changes around 100K, my opinion of course, especially with how often you have been and plan on doing spill and fills.
As for the PS fluid, you pretty much hit the nail on the head, removing a hose would be the route I would take. i would disconnect the line leading from the reservoir right at the pump itself, and drain from there. Once refilled with fluid and everything was back together, i would remove drive belt, and with the belt off I would spin the pulley a few times and it will help “bleed” the pump and you more than likely will get some air out. You could even cycle some fluid in and out that way.

Nissan says 96,000 km in the owners manual or 5 years. This in my opinion is way to long for these CVT’s. I had to insist on them changing one of the filters as they said it was not necessary, perhaps they would just like to install a new CVT later on, lol

Great video sir - absolutely one of the best that I have seen if not the best. What might help to keep the oil pan gasket in place is to tie this loosely with a couple of snip and ties, do a couple of bolts loosely on the pan and then cut them off - never tried it myself but I have seen it work on other videos. @@TheOriginalBeeCee finally knocked out the fluid and filter change yesterday and followed this tutorial to the letter. I can’t say enough good things about this video. The little details like including snippets from the FSM, providing OE part numbers, torque specs.. it’s immensely useful and gives a lot of confidence to amateur garage mechanics like myself. The fluid that came out was very dark but didn’t smell burned, but the pan and old filters were relatively clean, given that the CVT has likely never been serviced. I used several clear cups to catch a little “sample” of the original fluid, 1st flush, and 2nd flush, and compared them to the new fluid. Very satisfying to see the difference. After doing some research, I ended up using Idemitsu CVTF N3 fluid, which meets all the NS-3 specs and is apparently the factory fill for most Nissan vehicles. Here’s to another 100K!

Nicely done, excellent video. I would say that it is way easier and way less messy for the fill to go in through the tube at the top .You are correct there is no hard and fast filter replacement time but not a bad idea to change them once the milage gets up there. Glad to see you using genuine NS3 and not aftermarket.makes a big difference.

Great job BeeCee and well explained. This video made me feel comfortable that my 2013 altima will (hopefully) also reach 151k miles. I've read alot of complaints about the CVT transmission going bad and couldn't help be worried about mine.
How often do you change your cvt fluid ? Also, do you feel any vibration in your car when reaching 1900 rpm?
This was the 3rd change, I gave some insight on this cars history and what I recommend at the end of the video. And I can’t say I’ve ever noticed any vibrations with the car at all really.

@@puma1294 really hard to say. It seems dealers are over the place with this job and its specifics. If i had to guess, they probably just replaced the fluid.

you can do it without the special tool and fill it from the top.....just measure the exact amount that came out and replace it.my 2018 rogue 2.5 took 4 1/2 quarts when i replaced both filters...filling from the top is the only way to go....

Yes, yes you can...as I mentioned in the video. And personally, I’ve done it that way as well, as I have a video on the channel utilizing that method. But no, its not the “only” way...quite obviously when Nissan has a specialty tool to avoid filling from the top. The purpose of this video was do the OEM FSM procedure exactly to spec, which to do correctly, would require the overflow tool to fill. Can you drain from the top? Of course. Does it mean its the “ only way to go”, quite obviously not.

276,000 miles. . As today 4/16/24 Still running good. Original transmission fluid .
I got a 2013 and I get the cvt serviced at the dealership for 2 reasons, 1) the price of the fluid and the amount the dealer charges isn’t much different in my area and 2) they give me 1 year warranty but now I know to make sure they swap the cartridge filter

The referenced Service Manual fluid fill amount reads --"Fill approximately 3 liter (2-5/8 imp qt) of the CVT fluid." The manual does not include US qt. One imperial quart is more than one US quart.
3 liters = 101.44 US fluid oz = 3 US qt + 6 US fluid oz - (Rounded UP the 0.44 oz). So far there are 4.3K posts and this may have already been noted.

Excellent video explaining everything step by step . The only thing that I see the other people doing is flushing the transmission cooling system also to by disconnect both and out hoses by Nissan recommended spry using half the bottle one way and the other half for the other way until clean and clear liquid comes out . That’s my only take on the video to make it a prefect transmission oil change ever . But I know you flow Nissan guidelines and procedures.

Thanks Dude. Good Job. I had an old Ford machanic who showed me how to put a couple small dabs of wheel bearing grease on those pesky o-rings to help them stick in place while you tangle with installing the housing and getting the 1st screw started....:)

Excellent video. Thanks! I will say on opinion ONLY, the change frequency of the fluid, from my experience on a Murano and a couple Altimas I've dealt with, is subjective. Heavy use, such as frequent city/heavy traffic driving should make it more frequent, such as the 30k intervals suggested. I do mine at 45k on the Murano being it pulls things and does a mix of highway-city driving, and have done 60k intervals on other Altimas that didn't see more than highway, light duty, and infrequent use, like my pops used to do. The fluid did not seem broken down at all in his, so we opted for 60k, but checking the fluid at 40 and 50k for viscosity/visible condition.
As I said it's subjective and opinion. All of these vehicles were bought used and got a change of fluid after purchase being there was no record of it being changed. I also agree the filters are definitely a "by 100k" thing. If you don't drive it hard it should be good, but if you do, say, drive through something like the I-285/85/75 sector of Atlanta or worse, I would DEFINITELY recommend a more frequent interval to protect your transmission. Ultimately, these cars LAST if you care for them properly and nothing says you can't follow exactly what the manual recommends, either. 😁👍

The way you did this last time was so much simpler and I did it that way today.
I mean, it’s really not about what’s easier lol...more-so about what is in the best interest of the car’s maintenance & longevity. That said nothing wrong with a spill & fill, but IMO those filters are going to need to be replaced eventually and this procedure needs to be performed at some point. But I reviewed my opinions on time-frames & mileage and all that at the end of this video.

Thanks for recording and posting this vid. I just did this on my 2018 Rogue ..... before I found your vid. 🙄 Pretty much exactly what I did. I slightly over torqued the "inside the pan" filter bolts to 84 inch pounds (10 N-m) 😁. I wouldn't think it's gonna be a problem. The residue in the pan looks very minimal.

Check engine light came on, took it to AutoZone and was told it was spark plugs or ignition coils. Decided to see what Nissan said, told me the CVT control module was going bad and we need a new transmission $6,000.
My Nissan has 145K miles. The car is misfiring but not transmission symptoms I can tell of so I’ll be replacing the spark plugs, ignition coils, and now the CVT filters/fluid.
Really hoping I don’t need a new tranny.
Appreciate the comment man. But just some insight, I would have codes pulled again. Do you know what the codes were? Just speculating, but Nissan is definitely going to have better diagnosis abilities than Autozone. AZ uses general OBDII code pullers. They are only capable of pulling engine codes. So if there is an underlying transmission code, AZ can’t tell you. Nissan, and anyone with a higher end scanner can not only pull engine codes, but also transmission, ABS & SRS. I would have the transmission codes pulled by another source before you start spending money & playing the guessing game. And even if its just an engine misfire, I would start with just plugs. No need to buy coils & plugs. Plugs should have been replaced by 105k in these cars. So if they are original, than it’s probably just plugs. Don’t go spending unnecessary money without some more definitive diagnosing!
@@TheOriginalBeeCee Thanks for the response! The code given to me from Nissan was p17f1. I replaced the spark plugs yesterday and noticed a huge difference. Car runs better. However, I still have the check engine light. Thanks for the advice, I am going to take it to a shop and see what they have to say about it before I do anything else. If it needs a new transmission, is it even worth paying for at 145k miles?
@@Michael_G22 awe man. That is a CVT “Judder” code, which is when the belt inside the transmission starts to wear..in-turn the trans begins to slip, causing a “judder”. You typically would be feeling it…the trans would feel like it’s slipping a bit, and or shaking or a vibration. Just wont feel smooth. A new transmission is usually what is needed to fix it, but another potential cause could be a short in the CVT wiring harness tricking the code to come on.
And as far as it being worth it….thats really a subjective question that really only you can answer. Some things to consider are….is the car paid off? How the car’s condition outside of the transmission…is it mechanically sound otherwise? Is it cosmetically in good condition? how much is it to repair the car vs. how much it would be to get into another car Thats reliable? Do you like the vehicle otherwise and want to invest in it? Etc etc.
