He said "I didn't really know much about/who ___was" a good few times in the video. I was beginning to think that it would make a good drinking game whenever he doesnt know about a character before smash.
I was working at the time of the reveal and I had found out about it during my break. I didn't look much into it because I thought that Sephiroth had to be fake because I didn't think a 3rd party game would have 2 unique fighters and I was holding out hope that it would be someone I wanted. When I was done working and checked out the trailer for myself I was a little upset if I'm being perfectly honest. I mean, another anime swordfighter isn't the most exciting archetype and I wasn't overly familiar with Final Fantasy. The trailer completely shifted my opinion though. He seemed like he was really unique in both his playstyle and character design compared to the rest of the roster. This was the first and only time that a trailer had made me hyped for a character that I previously didn't really care for.
Fun fact: When it says "Lucas comes out of nowhere" its actually not only a reference to him being thrown in last minute but also to the nowhere islands where he's from in Mother 3.
Not gonna lie, the Everyone is Here trailer is my favourite trailer, ever. Not only was it immensely hype, but I still truly believe it's still extremely hype to this day. I still get shivers watching it. Plus, it was in the first Direct I ever watched, and it was also watched by me live too. I can't forget that.
i was really into metal gear when the reveal came out, and when i learned snake was coming back, my entire YEAR was made. no other trailer would hype me up like that, though joker's was pretty close.
I think my favorite part about the Steve reveal is how just after it officially drops there's this awkward silence where Mario stares at em just as shocked and confused as the rest if us were.
I feel Sephiroth's reveal should be an example on how you want to to a reveal trailer enjoyable and hype even for people that don't know the character. I think it helped that his theme fitted perfectly the situation
For me personally the best of the best trailers were Everyone is Here, Steve, Joker, Sephiroth, Mega Man, Sora and the original Smash Ultimate/Inkling trailer in that order.
I’m sorry how was Terry’s reveal so low? I didn’t know who Terry was before smash. Yet I loved it. It was kinda fun seeing all the people trynna grab it. And I loved the pixelated animation, it reminded me of my favorite era of gaming which was when games looked that way.
Terry’s trailer was the only trailer that managed to “hype” one character, then then kill it immediately after, the moment, the moment Iori apeared with eyes closed, I was basically 100% sure it was going to be him
for non snk fans it may seem that the terry trailer drags on for too long because “it’s obvious that it’s gonna be terry, he’s the protagonist after all” but it doesn’t work like that, it wasn’t a fatal fury trailer, it was an snk trailer (mainly a kof trailer with a little bit of samsho) and there’s a lot of “protagonists” in there, seriously, from the characters that appeared in the trailer, kyo, Ryo, Iori, and even nakoruru could fit perfectly into the smash roster because each one of them represents very well the franchises they’re from, I genuinely thought Iori had more chances to enter in the roster than terry
This was exactly my thought. I had assumed it was going to be cross promotion for the new Samurai Shodown, so my first thoughts were Haohmaru and Nakoruru. SNK loves putting a different character in each crossover. Iori in Million Arthur, Terry in Fighting Layer, Geese in Tekken, Hauhmaru in Soulcalibur. It seemed like Kyo had a real shot too. Also, the beginning was a King of Fighters reference. It definitely wasn't a Fatal Fury only affair.
As much as I loved the Terry trailer, I WAS secretly hoping for a metal slug rep. It of course made infinitely more sense to include Terry, he's a fighting game character, from a company who primarily makes fighting games.
For me not even Sora's or ANY OTHER reveal beats Sonic's At the time Sonic was that one character who people said they wanted in Smash Bros but then would be told "Never gonna happen" like a lot of us did with Sora and more than likely Steve. So for me Sonic's reveal will ALWAYS be top tier!

It's also a masterful bait and switch. There have been enough Protags in KoF that ANY of them could have been viable had Sakurai not been an O.G. in the Arcades. Terry was a pick I never knew I wanted, because the possibility never even crossed my mind, but I am SO HAPPY he made it in.
I feel that based off of the trailers alone, bayonetta should be wayyy higher. only because she wasn't leaked and was actually unexpected, then you compare it to a character like ryu who is insanely hype, but everybody knew.

I wish Etika was still around because the community wouldn’t be shitting on all the characters they don’t want, Etika loved Arms and Fire Emblem Three Houses. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was literally his favourite game. Etika united the gaming community in a way that no other man did, which is why I’ll always mourn his death
If I ever need a boost of serotonin (since my body hates making it), I rewatch the live reactions to Joker's announcement. Never touched a Persona game, but people's genuine excitement and joy makes me happy in turn. Halo Infinite's E3 2019 announcement similarly makes me tear up, but that's sadly not relevant to this discussion.
Having played Xenoblade II long before their reveal, the Pyra/Mythra reveal is easily my favorite of the bunch. Because of how they did it - bringing back the original voice cast, using the XC2 engine to make the footage, and narrating things the way they did - it legitimately looked like XC2 DLC right up until Pyra revealed the Smash invitation. And then to play "You Will Recall Our Names" as Mythra is revealed, which first plays in-game in the very battle where she joins you and unleashes her full Aegis powers, was just the final icing on the cake. If I was tiering these, that trailer would be right at the top in S+ - next to Sephiroth (redo Advent Children in Smash!? YES PLEASE!!!), Ridley (Nintendo's OTHER Biggest Badass, next to Samus), "Everyone is Here!" (no explanation needed), and World Of Light (NEW STORY MODE!!!) in roughly that order.
The thing I love about the Sora trailer is that they kept Samus and Ridley as far away from each other as possible, and that Sephiroth is just awkwardly standing there
Honestly I'd put Joker's trailer in S+ tier, I wasn't even a persona fan back then, but I was amazed when I saw it live on the game awards and also when the lights went out, it was really unexpected
Honestly just the fact that DISNEY allowed Sora into Smash makes the reveal for Sora S+ Also Sora being the go to never going to happen character because of Disney makes it ALMOST the best reveal.... only behind Sonic because that LITERALLY made my arm hairs stand up Also I say that JUST FOR THE CHARACTER REVEAL TRAILERS obviously the ultimate ones like everyone is here or Inklings (kinda trailer so idk weather to count it) wins because it’s hyping an entire game
I see a lot of people thinking that Terry was obvious and them saying that only fatal fury fans knew is kinda weird, because everyone was thinking more of Kyo, but when he didn't got the letter it wasn't clear who it was actually going to be.
I feel like Joker should be at least S though. The pure shock it gave so many people was so good. Nobody expected Joker, cause he was hardly ever in n a Nintendo console. He opened the door to so many options, and was almost universally loved.
Banjo's trailer was kind of genius. It subverted our expectations by reusing the first part of K. Rool's trailer, making us think that it was another villain. However, once that jiggy bounced by, we realized that the reason why K. Rool's trailer was recycled was not because it was a villain but that it was another character made by Rare. Sakurai managed to subvert our expectations while still connecting the character to the context of the trailer that's S+ right there
Now that's a worthwhile tier list - ranking every character's reveal in the Subspace Emissary. Ike definitely would be near the top, if not the very top.
Sign of a generation-defining video game trailer scene: still getting chills seeing the scene nearly 5 years after the original airing. Case in point: the Everyone is Here scene
Sephiroth's reveal single handedly got me to buy and play both FF7 and the remake. I had no clue who he was before but the trailer and the hype around it convinced me to play his original game.
Super Smash Bros. is not only a masterpiece but also the dream of any gamer, having all of your favorite characters fighting and interacting together is incredible and it sad to know that after Sora is released, this might never happens again in the future (or at least not at the level of what Ultimate is)...
Didn’t know who Ken, Shulk, Cloud, Bayonetta, Isabelle, or Sephiroth were before they were in smash…? Never played Minecraft before Steve was added…? How…?
Tbf I didnt know Cloud, Seph, Shulk, Bayonetta and Ken either I only knew Steve and Isabelle. Tho I have to thank Smash for the Sephiroth reveal thought he was just another anime swordfighter and now I know the lore and he's awesome
Even thought Sans isn't an actual character. His reveal was freaking INSANE! hearing the first few motifs of Megalovania and suddenly before you know it Sans is standing in front of you.....GODDAMN that was an awesome reveal
What I got from this video Nick literally doesnt playing any games, like at all Hasn’t played and/or heard of: - Metal Gear Solid - Final Fantasy 7 - Xenoblade Chronicles - Minecraft - Animal Crossing - Persona - Fire Emblem Fates/Awakening - Kingdom Hearts - Dragon Quest - Bayonetta
Sakurai should be the most beloved human in gaming. He brought unadulterated joy to so many of us, and the passion he showed toward bringing said joy was truly unique. He deserves the best from all of us in whatever he decides to do next, be it a new Smash game or something else. But no matter what, he deserves a break. He should take the entirely of 2022 off to relax
"I don't know who sephiroth was" nick's internet points -100 but dumb jokes aside I agree, some of these trailers were absolutely awesome and deserve the love
I have a feeling if Jesus Christ was announced as dlc for the next smash game, and he made an update video he’d say “I had no idea who this dude was for smash”
You meant Konami. Koei still makes games, and besides that, they don't own Metal Gear. Btw, specify VIDEO Games when you say Konami doesn't make them anymore pls. They still make the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official/Trading Card GAME and Mobile GAMES, so they're still in the business of GAMES.
@@evanvongustav8814 thanks got those two confused, maybe because they sound similar. I forgot Konami existed. Edit: And when I mean games i of course mean video games cause they were originally a major VIDEO game publisher. Didn't think that needed to be elaborated on. Sure they make gatcha mobile games, slot machines, and trading cards but those aren't really games or (medium of games) they're known for. I'm sure no one would get confused because i said "they don't make games" and think they stopped making the Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards.
When I watch the sephiroth reveal I was thinking “god damit another character I don’t know about” But than after thinking for a bit I was like “Hey wait a second… I maybe do know him” and after some research I ended up loving ff7 and was finally appreciating the fact that they put Cloud and Sephiroth into the games. Now the trailer gets more hype when I rewatch it. 11 of a 10 reveal.
The Everyone is Here trailer and the Mii Fighters reveal will never not make me emotional. Everyone is Here for obvious reasons, and then seeing Reggie and Iwata in that Mii trailer, telling you without telling you that they're the most passionate people Nintendo has ever been blessed with (alongside Sakurai of course), and now living in a world without Iwata and with Reggie retired, it just hits so different.
Don't disrespect Greninja like that. That reveal was hype. Stylish, made in a way that some people thought it was just Mewtwo using Aura Sphere instead of Shadow Ball, and full of character even though the part focusing on Greninja themself was short.
I feel like for me Corrin would be C or bottom B. Removing my personal biases, I understand that most people dislike and blame them for FE reps. Which is fine it's an opinion and their are valid reasons for that. However looking back at their reveal at the time, it's was pretty positive or indifferent and had a nice degree if hype. The controversy did happened but that's was later on then during the reveal. The reveal is a nice reference to the end of Chapter 6 but added Smash as an option. And while their was no fighter interactions it was cool to hear Xander, Ryoma, Elise, & Sakura stating their thoughts on Corrin's decision. But it did drag longer than it should have and they were from a game that wasn't released in the U.S. yet making it feel like a promotion for western audiences.
Sephiroth trailer is the best trailer. Inking trailer was a great trailer to get people to be hype for the game. While Sora trailer was the sad one because it was basically the ending to everything.
I respect the joker in A tier, but personally, even just for the energy alone, there’s so much buildup and the payout of simply turning the invitation around will never be beat for me

TBH for me Cloud should be in S tier because of him we knew that in Smash everything was possible.
That was Sonic, or Snake if we're getting technical.
I never played smash 4 but it’s still one of my favorite trailers. I mean it’s Cloud motherfucking Strife of course it’s hype
Uhhh that was done by Sonic Snake and Ryu in my opinion but okay
Honestly just the fact that DISNEY allowed Sora into Smash makes the reveal for Sora S+
Also Sora being the go to never going to happen character because of Disney makes it ALMOST the best reveal.... only behind Sonic because that LITERALLY made my arm hairs stand up
Also I say that JUST FOR THE CHARACTER REVEAL TRAILERS obviously the ultimate ones like everyone is here or Inklings (kinda trailer so idk weather to count it) wins because it’s hyping an entire game
This men didn’t know half of the characters before smash lol
I literally cried when sora was revealed. Me. A big, grown ass, huge-bearded man. Crying because his video game character was brought into smash xD
I see a lot of people thinking that Terry was obvious and them saying that only fatal fury fans knew is kinda weird, because everyone was thinking more of Kyo, but when he didn't got the letter it wasn't clear who it was actually going to be.
Yeah, like, KoF has around 10 games, I was kinda mad it was going to be Kyo and when he didn't get the letter I went nuts 💀
Overall, I think the trailers have been ranked more accurately here than anywhere else. (Except for Lucas lol)
I feel like Joker should be at least S though. The pure shock it gave so many people was so good. Nobody expected Joker, cause he was hardly ever in n a Nintendo console. He opened the door to so many options, and was almost universally loved.
@@tariqmcmaster8668 I don't agree some either, but you can't win them all.
I just got here from watching Hopcat and Z rank it, and my lord is that video an atrocity. Coming here is my palette cleanser.
Very good video, I think this is a really well argumented tier list. Well done!
Watching the inkling reveal gives me goosebumps every time
Imma be honest I've never heard of the sun before smash
The guy with the weird haircut was definitely the coolest reveal.
_Any anime guy in smash_ : is he talking about me?
Banjo's trailer was kind of genius. It subverted our expectations by reusing the first part of K. Rool's trailer, making us think that it was another villain. However, once that jiggy bounced by, we realized that the reason why K. Rool's trailer was recycled was not because it was a villain but that it was another character made by Rare. Sakurai managed to subvert our expectations while still connecting the character to the context of the trailer that's S+ right there
I was expecting the fake-reveal running gag to continue with the last character, too.
I remember a lot of people saying "Dixie Kong?" before that jigsaw bounced by. Then the hype went into overdrive.
Pyra Mythra Trailer was amazing. Beautiful animation, many references and I first thought it's going to be a DLC for XC2. It had a shocking effect.
Palutena’s trailer is my favorite cause it showed me my dream of a smash anime for 30 seconds
Not sure if this counts but Ike's entrance in subspace emissary is legendary enough to be a reveal tbh
Now that's a worthwhile tier list - ranking every character's reveal in the Subspace Emissary. Ike definitely would be near the top, if not the very top.
this video is "I never heard of [...] before but the trailer was hype"
Isn't this kid in like middle or highschool
The whole video in a nutshell:
“I had no idea who ____ was before smash, but after the trailer I knew exactly what he’s like”
I would like to bring up that Pyra and Mythra were hype for the Xenoblade fans
I really loved Sephiroth's reveal, It was such a good reveal trailer and Solid Snake's reveal in "Everyone Is Here!" Trailer, It was fantastic!
Finally, appreciation for the bowser jr trailer
That animation with the forward smash on Mario's shield still gives me chills
Fr it was crazy
11:29 "The first and only time you saw a spindash and cheered."
Accurate.
i loved when sonic basically saved the day at the end of brawl's subspace emissary
Sign of a generation-defining video game trailer scene: still getting chills seeing the scene nearly 5 years after the original airing. Case in point: the Everyone is Here scene
Sephiroth's reveal single handedly got me to buy and play both FF7 and the remake. I had no clue who he was before but the trailer and the hype around it convinced me to play his original game.
most surprising thing for me is , wow there are people out their who doesn't know who Cloud and Sephiroth is before they join Smash .
Sakurai: *reveals new character*
TCNick3: "So I didn't really know this character."
Super Smash Bros. is not only a masterpiece but also the dream of any gamer, having all of your favorite characters fighting and interacting together is incredible and it sad to know that after Sora is released, this might never happens again in the future (or at least not at the level of what Ultimate is)...
The little Mac one will always be my favorite
I really liked the Greninja trailer, even if he isnt that hype of a pick
Didn’t know who Ken, Shulk, Cloud, Bayonetta, Isabelle, or Sephiroth were before they were in smash…? Never played Minecraft before Steve was added…? How…?
Tbf I didnt know Cloud, Seph, Shulk, Bayonetta and Ken either
I only knew Steve and Isabelle.
Tho I have to thank Smash for the Sephiroth reveal thought he was just another anime swordfighter and now I know the lore and he's awesome
I swear this guy is like " Oh yeah that mario guy, I never know who it was before smash but goddam he is hype"
‘I’d never played smash bros before it was revealed in the tetris trailer, but even then I knew it was gonna be hype’
Even thought Sans isn't an actual character. His reveal was freaking INSANE! hearing the first few motifs of Megalovania and suddenly before you know it Sans is standing in front of you.....GODDAMN that was an awesome reveal
What I got from this video
Nick literally doesnt playing any games, like at all
Hasn’t played and/or heard of:
- Metal Gear Solid
- Final Fantasy 7
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- Minecraft
- Animal Crossing
- Persona
- Fire Emblem Fates/Awakening
- Kingdom Hearts
- Dragon Quest
- Bayonetta
Sakurai should be the most beloved human in gaming. He brought unadulterated joy to so many of us, and the passion he showed toward bringing said joy was truly unique. He deserves the best from all of us in whatever he decides to do next, be it a new Smash game or something else. But no matter what, he deserves a break. He should take the entirely of 2022 off to relax
And probably for 2023 for that matter he deserves it
@@gn2677 I concur
Hey, imagine that, a tier list online that I agree with almost completely
As a person who has talked to Fatal fury fans, they didn't know who it would be. Everyone assumed it would be Andy or Geese not Terry lmao
"I don't know who sephiroth was" nick's internet points -100
but dumb jokes aside I agree, some of these trailers were absolutely awesome and deserve the love
Imagine this your walking though the desert and then all of a sudden your whole squad starts getting bodied by a 7 year old turtle
The funny thing in sora’s is that in the background you can see Sephiroth looking like “oh shit”
"Luigi never interacts with Simon"
Perfect way to describe the matchup
I have a feeling if Jesus Christ was announced as dlc for the next smash game, and he made an update video he’d say “I had no idea who this dude was for smash”
Fun Fact: Every time Snake is revealed, it means something Never-seen-before and crazy is about to happen.
Probably cause Konami being restrictive with their IPs even though they don't make games anymore. The fact they got snake back is insane.
Honestly I think joker would be in S tier. The way they revealed him was such a shock to everyone and was so cool
I still laugh at that reaction (I forgot who by) where they legitimately thought it was Mewtwo for a while before Greninja fully revealed itself.
Sonic blew up the internet when he came to smash
No no no. Banjo definitely deserves s+. The internet lit up like a Christmas tree after his reveal. One of the most historic reveals.
Naaah. That is bias
@@captainmega6310 nah, i heard of banjo once before it and it was still hype as fuck
“the most requested character”
waluigi: hold my tennis racket
That last one is important
the amount of people you didn’t k ow before smash jeez
Sephiroth trailer is the best trailer. Inking trailer was a great trailer to get people to be hype for the game. While Sora trailer was the sad one because it was basically the ending to everything.
"It was like an animated movie"
That's cause its strongly referencing hell even mimicking advent children
I respect the joker in A tier, but personally, even just for the energy alone, there’s so much buildup and the payout of simply turning the invitation around will never be beat for me
You really are the poster child of "smash brings a new audience to games that are represented in Smash"
You didn't know who sephiroth was?
This man really said “simon’s trailer is mid because as u watch it more it gets worse”, as if something is supposed to be revealed to u more than once
dude the joker reveal was crazy, as a persona fan i was hyped as hell
