Woodturning - YEW're not my kind of bowl. A natural edge bowl

  • Hans (HB woodturning) gave me a nice piece of Yew (Taxus). I cut this piece in half and made this bowl. The wood is really beautiful. But I don't like this kind of bowls. I'm sure now. My preference is a usable bowl and not a decorative bowl.
Hans, thank you for this beautiful piece of wood. I'll think carefully about what to make of the other half. This wood is so beautiful that I want to make something nice from it.

a few apples, a few oranges, you have a nice looking functioning bowl. My opinion anyway, nice job.

Fruit is always a good solution to many problems. I think it's a good idea. Thanks for thinking along Al.

Lovely work Frank, the beauty of wood is that you can have a design change if you feel it needs one. Nice job!

Thanks Tim. Luckily I could do this change. Sometimes you can't mount it back on the lathe.
      Cheers, Frank.

Yew is such a lovely wood especially when it is all oiled up - I love it too Frank. The type of bowl ? Some you can't do too much with so it becomes art. Oh well. Thanks for sharing🙏 Take care. -Mike

Art is very difficult. That's why I prefer usable 😉. My wife made this one usable. Thanks for watching Mike.

Frankly I cannot see much wrong at all in this piece. The thing is I have a similar piece of wood from Hans laying in my shop and now of course the pressure is on to make something out of that as well. And it will be hard to improve on the job you did to this piece, I think it looks really great Frank! The Birch which Hans gave me has alreay been turned into a bowl and I will show that shortly.

I'm curious what you will do with it Leo. I'll keep my other piece for a while. I also have a piece of birch from Hans that I can turn for the second time now that it is dry. That will probably be a simple usable bowl 😉.

Hey Frank, nice to see what you've made with that piece of yew, I like the bark inclusions and natural edges.
What a pity that you yourself are not satisfied with the result, maybe you should see it as a work of art, not as a
    usable product.
    . Cheers, Hans
    Stay safe and keep turning

That's the problem Hans. I'm not that into art. But maybe I should look a little longer. Fortunately, the wood is very beautiful! Thanks again for that.

Prachtige schaal Frank.

Very good job on this yew, Frank, but with time I'm slowly having the same opinion about usable projects. It can have unusual colors or made with different techniques but must be usable. Sometimes is good to make something odd, just to go crazy a bit 😁 Take care my friend and keep thinking what to do from the second half 👍

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  2 года назад +1

Thanks Rav. (You are the man of the crazy projects🤭). But you're right, sometimes it's just crazy. Maybe I was just hoping it would turn into something nicer, because Yew is such a beautiful wood. I'll think of something unique for the other half.
      All the best my friend.

    Absolutely stunning bowl Frank
Al Ward idea of fruit is perfect. You could go one further and turn some apples & pears from various wood species to fill it, not that it needs it.

Hi John, I don't have your sticker. But I don't have a stickerboard and I'm not really into exchanging stickers. Only Rav and Leo once had a sticker of me and then I stopped. But thanks for offering and of course thanks for watching.
      Take care.
