Oh, that is beautiful! I love turning Eastern Red Cedar. It makes the whole shop smell wonderful. The shape is perfect for that wood. Eastern Red Cedar is funny it is a soft wood, but it can be hard to turn. And Happy Birthday Gary!!!!
Thank you very much Jane. It is such a pretty wood. Always wanted to turn some. Up at the Olympic National park there is a Red Cedar Tree that fell many years ago. Still that as it is in the park. It is 14 foot in diameter at the base. I have pictures of me standing by it when we were up there back in 2020. Thanks for the birthday wishes. Take care, Gary
Beautiful red. I am amazed you are able to design such mixed wood segmented bowls with your colorblindness; your wife must be a good helper and crafter too.
Thank you Lee. Most of my color blindness is some greens and browns. If they get close in shade then I am not sure what they are. My segment pieces and can tell apart. The one that had Birch and Cherry in the mix was a challenge LOL Thanks for watching, Gary
I have the opportunity to turn red cedar in small diameters (10cm/4"), I really like this wood But always, I keep a part of the sapwood to have the contrast between this red and creamy white in fact, I build my project around this with this vase whose shape is pretty, I stay on my hunger!! 😀
Thank you very much! I do like the contrast in wood but what I was trying to copy was made from clay and all pretty red looking. I have Black Walnut and Black Locust that has a wonderful contrast. Keep that hunger satisfied!!! Thanks for watching , Gary
Old shapes are fun to do, and can still look pretty good by todays' standards. I'm thinking of turning a set of old style dishes (those flat ones with a ~2 inch vertical rim, so they can also be used for soup or broth) myself, just haven't decided on the wood yet.
@@ThePapa1947 Not me, it's intended as presents for my sister and her husband, as they keep saying they want to move to living in a Yurt in a few years. So it's a bit tongue in cheek, but also should match the theme if they finally decide to move.
That looks real awesome. It’s too bad that it wasnot a little smaller piece of wood and you could’ve got some of the lighter outside with it but that looks awesome the way it is good job Gary
Thank you and best of luck getting one. Red Cedar is pretty special. Around here you can get plenty of western cedar but it is a bit plane. Thanks for watching, Gary
Stunning looking piece, but the best bit of the whole video for me was the satisfaction / excitement, when you got the shape just right ... fantastic 👍
Thank you very much. I really get involved with every piece I turn and when i took just a small amount off at the point the whole thing just came together. That was very exciting for sure. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Luie. It is sitting right in front of me full of pens and pencils and I love looking at it. The vertical dark lines are so interesting. Each one has a small knot in it and tells a story about the tree. Or at least lets your mind think of what it may have been. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Jeff. You are right about that. Wood turning is very exciting just for that reason. Even sitting here looking at the piece right in front of me I am seeing more and more things that we can miss while it is spinning on the lathe. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice, Gary! Lovely little cup, or mug, or vessel, or chalice, or... whatever.. I, too, have an idea for turning something based on an old form; just have to work up the nerve to give it a go, as it will be in 2, if not 3, pieces. Wes @ Piedra Designs

Very nice, the wood is a fantastic. You made a good choice for its use. I’ve been watching your videos for quite some time. My wife and I have relocated to Oregon and if your up to it and aren’t too far away, it would be a pleasure to meet you and chat about woodworking. If not, I understand.
Thank you very much. Where did you move to in Oregon? Where did you come from that would bring you to a state known for its rain. Well some parts have lots of rain and some don't. Depending how far you are but we can talk about it.
@@ThePapa1947 Gary. I’m not sure if this is going through RUclips. If so, please send me your individual email so we can communicate between ourselves. We are in southern Oregon so hopefully you’re not too far. Thanks
Ooohh, I like that shape too! I may have to borrow it if you don't mind. Cedar is such a cool wood to work with. I've got a lot of it on hand, more than I'll ever use, so if you want some, let me know. My cedar isn't that red though. Cedar also makes a nice ukulele top, crisp and mellow sounding ( I make tenor ukes). Thanks again for the inspiration. I always come away with an idea from your videos.
Thank you very much Gary. Cedar is a very nice wood. We have a very large Cedar tree but the best I can do is a limb now and then. Plus it is western Cedar so not all that red. Be my guest using the shape. Hmm...one of my acoustic guitars has a Cedar top and really has a nice sound. For years I have planned on making a guitar. Looking at what I needed to bend the sides I kind of forgot about it. Now I am thinking of making the body for an electric guitar I wanted as a kid but could not afford it. Now they are worth $$$$$$$ Thanks for watching, Gary

Hi Gary, that Eastern Red Cedar is beautiful wood. I turned some of that not too long ago and it made the shop smell really really nice for a few days!! I love this piece that you made. Take care, Ted
Thanks so much Ted. If you want to smell some very sweet wood you need to have a good smell of Sugar Pine. When I started my wood pattern making apprenticeship many years ago we used it for making patterns. Wow that stuff was sweet smelling. People would come in the shop and think it was a bakery. I would get used to it during the week but Monday morning there is was. And go on vacation and come back WOW! By around 1983 we could not longer get it so it was another pine that did not have that smell. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you very much Carol. Yes it is sitting right in front of me and I keep picking it up just to hold it. Such a comforting feel it is hard to resist. And I have claimed this one unlike all the others my wife gets first choice on LOL Maybe I will make her one out of Black Walnut. Take care, Gary

Thank you TM! Yes is is very soft but very pretty and worth it. Josh said it had been down for years but out in the weather the whole time. It seemed pretty dry to me when I turned it.
Hope you had your morning coffee...I know I did LOL.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice. I love red cedar, but sometimes it can be a pain to work with.
Thank you Ted. We do not have all that much Red Cedar around here so was sure happy to get this piece.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Always watching and learning, so thank you.
Who knew cedar could be that pretty?
Red Cedar and Redwood both have some rich colors like this one.
Thanks for watching Dave!
Take care,
Gary
Gorgeous piece of wood. Really like that design.
Thank you very much Garry and thanks for watching,
Gary
Absolutely gorgeous Gary.
Thank you Jack...happy you like it.
Take care,
Gary
Happy birthday Gary. Cool looking piece.
Thank you and thank you Johnathan.

Your shop must have smelled wonderful while you were turning!
Thank you very much. I am sure it did. I lost most of my sense of smell in 2006 from an unknown reason. Now and then I can sense some things but not like it used to be. When it happened I could not tell the difference between gasoline and water.
My wife enjoys the smell of coffee when I make it but she does not like to drink it LOL the doctors told me I should not be able to taste things but I do fine with that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great little vessel! And I like the internal support trick, which I can use in the future. Thanks.
Thank you Julian. It is always good to be able to support a piece when needed. For sure I felt more comfortable with support on this one.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That's a very nice piece Gary. Really liking the colour
Many thanks Jiggsy!
An absolutely beautiful piece of wood made into a wonderful pencil pot.
Thank you very much Jean. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Very beautiful Gary 👍👍👍👍
Thank you Radar and thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Nice this week Gary.
Thank you John I appreciate you watching and commenting.

Gary
Excellent video Gary. Lots of detail and depth, I could look at it fo hours. My thanks also to Josh.
Thank you very much Bob, It was very kind of Josh to send that piece to me. And I still have a much bigger piece left.
Josh has made some very nice things out of this Cedar. I put a link to his Facebook page in the description if you want to check it out.
Let him know I sent you.
Gary
Love that shape. I have a supply of buckthorn the perfect diameter for this project.
Thank you Douglas. Not sure I have seen Buckhorn. Sounds very interesting. Have fun!
Gary
Looks beautiful Gary.
Thank you very much Deno!
The shape resembles something you would find in a Aztec village a long time ago.
Yes it sure does Josephine. Thanks for watching,
Gary
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful red. I am amazed you are able to design such mixed wood segmented bowls with your colorblindness; your wife must be a good helper and crafter too.
Thank you Lee. Most of my color blindness is some greens and browns. If they get close in shade then I am not sure what they are.
My segment pieces and can tell apart. The one that had Birch and Cherry in the mix was a challenge LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It's absolutely beautiful.
Thanks so much Carolyn. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching.
Gary
Nice as usual , great video and finish
Thanks so much Edward I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Really nice Gary, great shape and finish!
Thank you Chris. Strange how something simple and small can be one of my favorites. At least for this week LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I find that to be true more often than I would expect.
I have the opportunity to turn red cedar in small diameters (10cm/4"), I really like this wood
But always, I keep a part of the sapwood to have the contrast between this red and creamy white
in fact, I build my project around this
with this vase whose shape is pretty, I stay on my hunger!!
😀
Thank you very much! I do like the contrast in wood but what I was trying to copy was made from clay and all pretty red looking. I have Black Walnut and Black Locust that has a wonderful contrast. Keep that hunger satisfied!!!
Thanks for watching ,
Gary
Old shapes are fun to do, and can still look pretty good by todays' standards. I'm thinking of turning a set of old style dishes (those flat ones with a ~2 inch vertical rim, so they can also be used for soup or broth) myself, just haven't decided on the wood yet.
Thank you Judith! Will you be eating soup from them? That sounds very interesting.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Not me, it's intended as presents for my sister and her husband, as they keep saying they want to move to living in a Yurt in a few years. So it's a bit tongue in cheek, but also should match the theme if they finally decide to move.
@@judithflow3131 😁🤣❣️
That looks real awesome. It’s too bad that it wasnot a little smaller piece of wood and you could’ve got some of the lighter outside with it but that looks awesome the way it is good job Gary
Thank you Ken. I have a large piece where I did get some of the sap wood on it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I’ve just made a bowl out of jarrah and coated it with orange oil. It’s amazing how the colour changed
It is always interesting watching how some woods come alive with a coat of finish.
Now I need to find a piece of cedar. I like it. 😁👍🏻
Thank you and best of luck getting one. Red Cedar is pretty special. Around here you can get plenty of western cedar but it is a bit plane.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Stunning looking piece, but the best bit of the whole video for me was the satisfaction / excitement, when you got the shape just right ... fantastic 👍
Thank you very much. I really get involved with every piece I turn and when i took just a small amount off at the point the whole thing just came together. That was very exciting for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Loved the shape and the color of the cedar. Very nice, Gary! It should look great on your desk. Thanks!
Thank you very much Greg. Yes it is sitting right in front of me with one of my favorite pens in it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
well done sir!
have to love the cedar!
great video
Thank you Luie. It is sitting right in front of me full of pens and pencils and I love looking at it. The vertical dark lines are so interesting.
Each one has a small knot in it and tells a story about the tree. Or at least lets your mind think of what it may have been.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Yes you do have to love it Luie. And I do 😁😁
Belle réalisation Gary bravo 👍👏👋
Denis, j'apprécie vos commentaires et merci beaucoup d'avoir regardé,

Yes very pretty Cedar. Thanks for watching
That's a beautiful piece of cedar Gary! Beautiful shape too!
Thank you very much Heather!
Beautiful piece fine sir. The shape does look wonderful.
Thank you very much Clyde and thanks for watching.
Gary
That's the beauty of woodturning, you never really know what's inside of the wood until you get in there. Beautiful piece.
Thank you Jeff. You are right about that. Wood turning is very exciting just for that reason.
Even sitting here looking at the piece right in front of me I am seeing more and more things that we can miss while it is spinning on the lathe.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That’s a beauty.
Thank you Herbie happy you liked it.

Really nice, Gary. The shape doesn't have to be exact, it just has to be pleasing to the eye. It is.
Bill
Thank you Bill. You are right because back when those were first made from clay I doubt any were the same.

Gary
Very nice, Gary! Lovely little cup, or mug, or vessel, or chalice, or... whatever..
I, too, have an idea for turning something based on an old form; just have to work up the nerve to give it a go, as it will be in 2, if not 3, pieces.
Wes @ Piedra Designs
Thank you Wes. Now you have me interested in what you are going to do. Let me know how it goes.

Beautiful piece of wood

Thank you very much!
Well I hope you had a wonderful birthday 🥳
That’s a beautiful piece of wood and you truly brought out the beauty in it! I love the red woods! Great job! A true masterpiece! Bravo!
Thank you Mary. Yes it was a wonderful birthday and this is a wonderful piece of wood. I turned the other half as well and there is a video on it as well.
Wow, Gary that is so pretty.
Thanks so much Laura and thanks for watching,
Gary
So lovely beauty , awesome 👍
Thank you very much Sony!
Really nice .makes a good pen holder.may have to make a few.
Thanks so much. I kept most of the inside as a drilled hole so the pens would stand up better.
They would be great gifts for sure.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice, the wood is a fantastic. You made a good choice for its use. I’ve been watching your videos for quite some time. My wife and I have relocated to Oregon and if your up to it and aren’t too far away, it would be a pleasure to meet you and chat about woodworking. If not, I understand.
Thank you very much. Where did you move to in Oregon? Where did you come from that would bring you to a state known for its rain.
Well some parts have lots of rain and some don't.
Depending how far you are but we can talk about it.
@@ThePapa1947
Gary. I’m not sure if this is going through RUclips. If so, please send me your individual email so we can communicate between ourselves. We are in southern Oregon so hopefully you’re not too far. Thanks
great looking like all way
Thank you very much Delbert!
Now they are worth $$$$$$$
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice shape. That is why classics are classic. Will you be in Albany next weekend for the Oregon Symposium? I will be there, hope to see you.
Hi Valerie. Yes that is a very classic shape and I just love it. As a matter of fact I will be there for 2 days. If you want to email me I can give you my number to text and I would love to meet up as well.

Hi Gary
What a beautiful piece, loved the final result. By the way I now hot glue my tenons on and find it works great.
Happy belated birthday Gary hope you had a wonderful day.
Thank you very much Jim. I have used the hot glued tenons on my last 3 turnings. You have only seen this one. More to come.
When there is not much wood to work with it is a good way to use what you have.

Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful!!
Thank you Maria!
Happy Birthday. Come to San Antonio for GREAT Mexican food
Thanks and it sounds good to me!
beautifuly turned.
Thank you my friend,

Love the shape and the color! Pink is my favorite color, so I especially love Cedar...wonderful addition to your desk!
Thank you very much Carol. Yes it is sitting right in front of me and I keep picking it up just to hold it. Such a comforting feel it is hard to resist. And I have claimed this one unlike all the others my wife gets first choice on LOL Maybe I will make her one out of Black Walnut.
