Sorry for your loss, but we do see all these lovely bowls being turned out by expert turners but never see their failures. So a first class effort to you and a thumbs up.
Bill Giles thanks Bill! I certainly won’t spend the time to video and not share due to failures. Many actually enjoy the failures more than the successes as a learning experience and to see how others come up with a work around. I know I’m definitely not an expert, and very capable of making mistakes 🤣.
Seedaholic Gardens just what you are doing. I had an idea I wanted to try, watched a bunch of you tubers bought a cheap used lathe and I was off to the races. Now I’m 5 lathes and a year and a half into it! And lots of money 🤣
MrTaco250 thanks Mr Taco!! I really hated wasting all that time videoing the process. Just like the bowl... I couldn’t see throwing it all away! Rest assured if I get a fail on video, I’ll share it! 😉
Dunno if you guys gives a damn but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all of the latest series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my gf for the last few weeks xD
JET 1221. Workhorse of a lathe! I turned a nice, but smaller, Eastern Red Cedar bowl a while back. The wood was wet, but not sopping wet. All went well. Nice piece if I say so myself. I put it on a shelf in my office with several other items I'd turned. A few weeks later I was in my office and heard a loud pop. After several minutes of eliminating things in my office that might go 'pop', I happened to look at the shelf with the turned pieces. My pretty little red cedar bowl had a chunk out of it - much as if I had pie-sliced it. I still have it to remind myself of the possible challenges of wet/green wood.
Carol Riley thanks Carol! My wife loves it crack and all! I just need to get back on that horse and try again now. I will have success with cedar one day!
I have a small willow bowl that broke into 4 pieces. Too pretty to throw away so I glued it and kept it. Red Cedar can be full of surprises, but so colorful.
Valerie Henschel yup for the next few days for sure! My first mistake was changing to a tenon when I’m used to a mortise. I should have flushed the crack off and sunk a mortise!
Kennet - I am a bit upset (perhaps even angry)! We woodturners should not take such chances to prove a point. It is so easy to leave a stub, saw it off and sand smooth. It was such a beautiful bowl. Please! I do think you were upset yourself, however. Serves you right. Ha-ha-ha. Regards from South Africa - Hennie Basson
Hennie Basson you had me cracking up laughing! You are right I took a chance I should have never taken... that’s why there were no beeps (me cursing) when it happened. I just stood there and watched it fly. I couldn’t blame anyone but myself. I have a bunch more cedar, I will have my day! And soon. Thanks for the laugh. Made me smile! Have a great day
Just subscribed! You have great videos! Love your content 👍🏻i know the feeling when you go through all that work and a accident happens like that. Still looks amazing
I always love to work with cedar, I love the smell and the finish it takes. I think anyone thats turned wood has had a piece come loose with similar results as you had..... and it always Sucks. But it was a beautiful bowl, I look forward to your next one.
Cedar really does love the higher grits. I've gone up to 3k on my "worry wood" pieces. And I'm glad the bowl is still going to be put to use! Even flawed, it's lovely. I think I would have cried if it had been relegated to the burn pile.
Rebecca Hewett thanks Rebecca! The wife has a new office that needs a candy dish... it will be an adequate candy dish for our crew! 🤣. Super glad it only lost one piece!
Maybe you should try using a back saw to finish the last little bit of the spindle. This is what I see on other wood Turner's vids. They finish with the lathe turned off. Happy trails.
Richard Parker thanks for the recommendation Richard. Typically I use a flat chisel and sand everything flat. What got me with this I think is I typically use a mortise, and when I do have a tenon it’s in hardwood and I have to go close so as not to tear the bottom of the bowl... doesn’t work on the soft cedar. I’m going to process another blank or two an get them ready to go... there will be another rematch! 😉
All was going so well; all gussied up real pretty like with someplace to go but hey, some days the bear get you. Ugh 😕 Full strength sanding sealer, eh ? I hear that'll put hair on your chest 😁 -Mike
MPart yeah some days it’s just not to be. I shot myself in the foot with it. I should have stopped... oh well. Yes full strength mylands. Don’t know about the hair but will keep an eye on that 😉
Oh damn, Mert! That was looking so good too! The worst thing is that unlike mine, yours was done for all intents and purposes. Sorry about that, bro! Billy
Sorry about the mishap it does happen from time to time. I finish off my bottom with the same setup although I've gotten into the habit of putting a few strips of blue tape from the back of the board across a part of the bowl I won't be using the tool on. It only takes 3-4 pieces, looks funny and sometimes sounds funny after it comes up to speed but helps keep it in place in case of an accident.
Allen Mayles thanks for the tip Allen. If I go with a tenon again I might try that. Or I could not go so far and finish with a flat chisel and sanding 🤦♂️. It’s ok though I have a bunch more of the tree so we will return with it 😉
😖 Ouch! I was really exciting watching Your video. Pattern is almost simetric and looks great. This badly fall down was necessary 😵 Either I like Your videos 💪😊
Second life of wood-turning thanks for watching. I was excited too when I flipped it over. My heart sank as it bounced off my elbow onto the floor 🤦♂️
James Harper thanks for watching! At 4:16 I am actually using my straight skew as a scraper. In this position it acts as a negative rake scraper on the outside of the bowl. At approximately 10:45 I did use my dedicated negative rake shear scraper (home made) on the inside of the bowl.
Kennett B Turned its still good, I just need to sand it back again and possibly add in a feature line using milliput (10mm/3/8 inch) then she’ll be right! I’m happy none of the resin was damaged.
George Brill only the forth I’ve tossed on the floor and by far the worst outcome. All the others I’ve been able to retrue and refinish this needed glue! 🤣
Hi Mert, Stunning looking bowl. I love Red Cedar. Great shame the bowl went for a flying lesson. Any reason you didn't use Cole Jaws to take the tenon off? Cheers, Huw
Wooden-It-Be-Nice thanks for watching Huw. Yeah a bit of a shame but my fault and I accepted it as soon as it happened. I don’t use cole jaws for a couple reasons mainly because the set I had lost more bowls than my face plate had (until this one). Now They are equal so I’ll probably pick up another, better set at some point. Secondly, on the nova chucks they are a pain to transfer on and off. But Santa has two new chucks on my list so hopefully I was good enough 🤣. The red cedar will come back for a rematch and eventually I will win... I have a whole tree of blanks, I’m bound to win one 🤔. Thanks
Donna Ricardo thanks Donna! I was bummed when it was all said in done... but when it happened I didn’t even curse, I knew it was my own fault. I was thinking in my head... don’t do it... get the flat chisel out 🤦♂️
Troy Bucy thanks for watching Troy. That is a home made dedicated negative rake shear scraper. I got the idea for a build that Rick Turns did. His build video can be found here ruclips.net/video/cguioocjwIc/видео.html.
Jen's Woodworking & Things I hope you have similar grain but let’s hope it’s flight tendencies are limited to the north side of the tree 🤣. I got a whole bunch more... I just gotta try again!
Sorry for your loss, but we do see all these lovely bowls being turned out by expert turners but never see their failures. So a first class effort to you and a thumbs up.

I could watch you work that lathe all day, every day!Just gorgeous!
Seedaholic Gardens thanks! Wish I could run it all day at times ! 🤣
@@KennettBTurned How sis you learn this wonderdul art? They never offered this at any of the schools I attended!😊

@@KennettBTurned A year and a half? Holy Cannoli Ken, wow!
Congrats for being willing to show the things that don't go well or fail. Shows your integrity and character. ☺

I think the bowl is gorgeous

AWWW bummer Mert, she sure was purdy though !
thanks Doug! guess I gotta work harder at making sure I catch all the comments 🤔
That was a fine bowl, Mert. Sorry for what happened. At least she's happy with it - a silver lining.
William Ellis thanks William! It may have won the battle but the war is far from over. I’m super glad I didn’t have to toss it in the stove 🙃
Great looking bowl
Mountain View Turning thanks. Just wish it didn’t get the added pour spout!
It happens keep on turning
Oh, what a bummer! That was such a gorgeous bowl and the cedar has such spectacular grain!

Been there, done that! Be careful with soft woods, cedar, aspen, poplar, pine, redwood, etc
Allyn Wasser thanks for watching! I thought I was being careful... just went one pass too far 🤷♂️
its funny how that works like that- its always that last pass! kinda like looking for your wallet or keys- they're always in the last place you look!
Slow and steady wins the race.... Nice bowl tho.

I always make sure the wood has stopped turning before putting my finger on it. Especially, the edge, it can cut you to the bone. Ask me how I know.
