  • This is a piece that is much longer than it is wide. This makes for a great place to store bananas! Red Cedar is a soft wood but sure has some pretty colors! Finished in shellac.

Morning Phil, I'm bright and early today, started watching at 6am, that's more like it. Cuppa tea in bed watching Phil make something beautiful, happy days.🤗
I just paused to say that it's just occurred to me your workshop would be the ideal candidate for infrared heating, far IR panels or perhaps even an outdoor type visible infrared stand heater. I've been researching it for my home and I've discovered it works well in larger spaces because it doesn't heat the air first to get you warm it warms you first: like the sun without the UV rays. I don't know if anywhere in your neck of the woods manufactures them, we have locally made panels here in the UK, they come with smart controllers which make them easy to use and cheaper to run than you'd expect. Of course they are silent and require no maintenance. Suspended from the ceiling they will heat the whole room if sized correctly, (they use them in churches, Fully Charged/Everything Electric Show just reviewed Herschel's Halo heaters designed to blend in with church architecture, they're beautiful!) or you can put them on a wall or get them on a stand to warm a smaller area, but ceiling suspension is most effective and they're not that expensive, here at least.
    Ok, back to the video.👍
Ha ha, yes it's obviously a flame -thrower! I'll have a think and a look through the comments to see if anyone else can remember what we call it!😅
Well I never thought I'd say it but the natural edge was much better than a live edge on this one Phil, that bark was a bit furry eh?! So pleased you managed to get that beautiful wood to shine, must have been a lot of work I'm sure. Definitely did it justice though, another gorgeous piece. 👍😊

Over here, Costco sells an infrared heater but, it's portable and kind of large. I just don't have room for it. Ceiling hung might worked. My shop has no insulation and lots of gaps in the doors and the unfinished ceiling where the bird blocks let in lots of fresh air. None of it is really practical. When we moved in here, the shop was completely empty. I knew that was my one and only chance to seal it all up but, I couldn't wait to get my shop all set up, so, here I am! 😊 Thank you, Jude!

    • @judebrown4103
      @judebrown4103 6 месяцев назад

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshopyeah you really need the good quality ones with the suspension kit and the smart controllers to make it worth while. The ones they sell in places like Costco can be a false economy as they're not always the correct power for your space. The drafts don't matter so much if you can size the panels right and place them in an ideal position. There are guides on the websites as to the best size and power rating for your room depending on it's cubic feet and amount of insulation. Which in your case is definitely none because you just could wait to get to turning and who can blame you! Cheers Phil, see you next time. 😊👍

You tuned a beautiful banana bowl, it turned out just gorges. I have a lot of experience turning red cedar. Depending what you are turning, bark or barkless, there is some hidden beauty under the bark. The bark leaves a grain stain underneath that a lot of times make the project pop. Here in Jefferson City Missouri, most of our forest is just THICK with Red Cedar and we dont have a lot of other woods to chose from to turn. Since you a root/bowl turner, the red, white and burl like grain pattern in the bottom of the bowl can be spectacular. The multi different colors and wild grain patterns blend themselves and are indescribable!!!! I haven't tried to burn the top of the bowl where the bark was. I had another SENIOR MOMENT and didn't even think about that method. Leave it to you to suggest that, that is why I ( LOVE) your channel, I learn some thing every time I watch your video. KEEP ON TURNING ❤

Another triumph, thank you for allowing us to enjoy your production, again. It is just as well that we 'Brits' do not take offence too readily at remarks made by 'Colonials', perhaps because we are well used to receiving them! Winston Churchill, who was half American, once said that Britain and America were two countries divided by a common language, your experience goes to prove his point. I look forward to enjoying future productions, they are always great experiences.

Very pretty coloration, that kind of looks like a plum color on my screen, but whatever it would be named the word pretty would be attached! My favorite cedar are pieces that had branches. The graining with the color is absolutely gorgeous. I try but I am pretty inept at using a bowl gouge larger than 3/8" for smoothing sides or the bottom, although going small seems to help a lot. I got so frustrated I decided to try a 1" left hand bowl scraper and a 3/4" round/side cut scraper and am very happy with the results. Another beautiful bowl Phil!

    Looks great 👍
I’ve turned a lot of red cedar, and it can be difficult. Like you said, it’s very soft and porous. Can’t do anything with that shredded paper like bark. The sapwood is too much like pine, and cracks so easily. Smells great, but the dust from cedar is a pain too. Sticks to everything like powdered sugar.
But all that said, the heartwood is very pretty…and in the end, it’s always worth it. I’ve found to get a good shine go from the sanding sealer to something like Acks. Once the wax is on there, it really pops. You lose the smell, except for the bottom after removing the tenon. I use walnut oil for that part. Blends in well, and saves the wonderful cedar smell in at least that part of the project.
    Anyhow, wrote too much 😂

Hi 👋, Phil, what is burning, 🔥, A small gas torch for soldering copper pipe, and if you want to go the other way, roofing gas torch, or weeding gets torch, might find these a bit too big, you’ll end up burning your place down, I have a roofing torch, it does a lovely job of getting rid of weeds, . Had problems this evening. Sorry it’s morning, couldn’t sleep very well, so I got up around 3 o’clock in the morning and started watching your program, I know, had a problem, the au pair girl 🧒 😂 and obviously been cleaning my hi-fi equipment, I had no sound, it appears the mute button had been pressed, silly, Billy, 😂, and yes, I listen to my RUclips through my hi-fi equipment,
As per usual, the bowl looks amazing, that was definitely a lot of signing sealer and shellac to get a finish on it, but as we know you’ll get there on the end, And I have made a bit of progress with my workshop come garage, I’ve now got the DPM down, getting ready to lay concrete. Might be doing it this coming week, Keep up the great work. Stay safe.,

if you search for blow torch for catering you should be able to get a small hand held one that chefs use for sprucing up there dishes,

Truly beautiful colours there Maestro. What a stunning piece. I've never been successful in keeping the bark on cedar, it's too soft and fiberous. Ooo I bet your workshop was smelling nice after that. I love and hate cedar... I love the aroma, I hate the resulting rash all over my arms...
You made the right call with not burning the outside. Cedar is so soft, when you burn it, you end up with the grain darkening, but the softer wood between just kinda disappears.... oh, and it's a "blow torch". ;) It can be pretty cool though! Especially if you take a wire brush to it afterwards to really knock out the soft wood and leave the raised grain...
    Keep rocking, sir. :)
    Jay

Hi Phil Not sure how you would ever keep the bark on Eastern Red Cedar. Live trees can be stripped from top to bottom in long sheets. We have lots in South Western Ontario sometimes called Juniper. Beautiful natural edge "banana bowl" love the colour.
    Take care Bob

Beautiful piece Phil! Was just thinking when ya was talking about that center as you were getting it finished up, would look pretty cool with one of those brass ships wheel nutcrackers on it!😎

Beautiful looking bowl Phil. I myself have turned tons of red cedar, very seldom does the bark stay on. Personally I think it looks better without it. Thanks for sharing and take care.

It’s a blow torch 😊😊 normal torch is a battery powered flashlight and a blowtorch is the gas powered flame one 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

🙋‍♂️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Hi Phil beautiful bowl once again the colour of the heart wood is amazing. Being from Wales I would call anything that breathes out flames a dragon, see the Welsh flag 🐉🐲. LOL But in all seriousness it would be called a blow lamp or blow torch, a hand lamp for illumination would just be called a torch. All the best Phil hope it warms up for you soon.

Thanks for the video Phil. I love the colors. I too want a little hand torch. I haven't bought one yet but I've seen them used on a cooking channel. It has a little nozzle, fits in the hand and uses small butane containers that look to be about 3 inches round and about 6inches tall. Not sure if that's what kind of torch you're looking for but I'm a wood carver and I think it would work for burning off fuzzies without over burning. Like I said I haven't bought one so no recommendations on brand it's just on my wish list. 😂. Have A Great Rest of the week. Be safe and be well

Thanks, Linda! I do have one of those small kitchen torches for creme brule'. I don't think it would be powerful enough to burn wood efficiently. But, I have a good idea of what to look for now thanks to all these helpful comments! 😊
