    I've turned several of these red cedar bowls and still have lots of blanks ready to turn, you said something about it being brittle, I haven't noticed that, it turns like clay, just find lots of small cracks, and C.A. glue works good on that. I cut my blanks out the same way except I use a pick instead of a nail, but they make beautiful bowls, I only use polishing grit and bee's wax for the finish, so not to cover the cedar smell !

      Thank you Larry. Glad you are enjoying this project. I have used the Meguires Cleaner Wax on Acrylic and Epoxy turning projects and agree that it will leave a superior finish. The Yorkshire Grit that I have I got about six months ago or longer. I use it all the time and you can hardly tell any is gone from the can. You literally only use a "very" small amount on a project. I think it is well worth the money and I am a real cheapskate. LOL!! Take care my friend!

    Hi Stephen. I know it's been a few years since this video was published and that you've likely upgraded from this lathe, but I wanted to get your opinion. Did you find that this lathe's weight helped to offset the relatively high 650 RPMs speed minimum? The swing capacity and price point are attractive, but the opportunity for excessive vibration has me hesitant to upgrade from a midi lathe. Thanks. All the best.

    • @StephenOgle
      @StephenOgle  3 года назад +1

      Thank you Jason. I have bought a new lathe a couple of years ago. I never regretted my G0462 and enjoyed it for years. Just be aware of the minimum rpm and balance of a rough piece. If it is bolted securely to the floor (preferred concrete) you should be good. If a piece is out of balance it does not really matter which machine you are using. You will get vibration from any of them. Just for your information. Grizzly changed the design of the tailstock and I do not like the new design. The foot sticks to far under the quill. Looks to me like it can get in the way with a large bowl blank. Just saying. I hope this helps. Take care.

    Steve, I have two questions. I have a Sorby 13 mm (1/2 in) bowl gouge that is the only tool I use for my bowls, except touch ups with spindle tools. If you only could keep two bowl tools, one being a 13 mm, what would be your second tool? Second, what tool did you use to get under the rim?

    • @StephenOgle
      @StephenOgle  7 лет назад

      Good question Jamie. I find that my most useful tools while bowl turning and even for a lot of spindle turning is my 5/8" bowl gouge. It just gives a lot of control when roughing a bowl and if it is really sharp will also complete most of your finish work. On this bowl I used my gouges to do the recess below the rim. I hope this helps.

    What size blade do you use on your bandsaw and what finish do you use. Everything I use on Ceadar just soaks right in and I have to put 8 or coats on it before if stops ducking it in.

    • @StephenOgle
      @StephenOgle  4 года назад

      Good question Tim. My bandsaw is used for mainly rough cutting and I choose to us a 1/2 inch blade with 4 to 6 tpi. They are 105 inch. A great finish on Cedar is two coats of Tung Oil and 2 to 3 coats Minwax Paste Finishing Wax. However, DEFT Laquer based sanding sealer works very well also. I hope this helps.

    hey there Stephen, I have been able to acquire quite a bit of the red cedar myself and will trying my hand at turning a few bowls and boxes. how do recommend finishing them to keep the color from fading and what to do for the boxes to not cover that sweet aromatic smell?

    • @StephenOgle
      @StephenOgle  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you sir. I have found that Laquers and Oil based Polyurethanes are your best bet for finishing cedar to retain the colors. Wax only finished seem to allow the red to turn brown. As far as retaining the aromatic fragrances. The wood will stop giving off the nice smell after a few weeks, but can be restored by lightly sanding an area. I hope this helps.

    Nice smooth work at the lathe. Loved the use of a face shield and actual wood screws rather than drywall screws to mount the face plate. Every step done properly is a good work method and ethic to have. My hat is off to you sir!

    I like cedar as well. Haven't tried Yorkshire grit.

      Thank you sir. I find the Yorkshire grit to really help with the surface preparation before waxing. It actually works great!

    Is Yourkshire grit the same as EEE? I see a lot of guys using the Yorkshire grit.

      Thank you Michael. I am not really experienced with the EEE and can not honestly answer your question. However, a lot of people compare the two so I believe they are similar compounds.

    What does adding the sanding sealer after sanding do? Thanks Karen

    • @StephenOgle

      Thank you Karen. It simply ensures a good base for the Yorkshire grit to work on. I hope this helps.

    Is that a shellac based sanding sealer you used? It turned out really nice.

      Thank you Mike. I use DEFT Lacquer based sanding sealer. It is much more durable than Shellac based. I hope this helps.

      Thank you John. Yes, just simple cabinet liner. It works great for this application and holds up well.
