Woodturning - Something Totally Unique and One of a Kind!

  • This piece is certainly something special! I was contacted by a retiring British Army Major in the 2nd Battalion Parachute regiment as he wanted to create an award that could be presented to the best Junior Officer annually. The idea being that the tankard inside the piece is the officers to keep, but the tankard holder/display piece stays in the officers mess, taking pride of place on their oak bar top.
Simon told me that he wanted the piece to look like a 9mm hollow point round, and I did my best to get the proportions correct. To accommodate the tankard, a slot needed to be cut in the side of the piece, and the stress while drilling and cutting into a perfectly finished piece almost killed me! But it was well worth it, to know that Simon was thrilled with the result, and something I made will become a highly regarded Military award within the battalion.
An engraving plaque will be added to the piece, so that the names of recipients can be displays forever more..... I just hope that they don't cover up much of that beautiful grain.
The casing is made from English Ash with some of the best grain I've ever seen, its been sanded to 10000 grit, and finished with three coats of Danish Oil, and 1 coat of wood wax. The bullet head is made from Australian Red Mallee burl, cast in epoxy resin.
Let me know what you think of this piece. Sorry it has been a while since my last upload, I've had a lot going on, including taking delivery of my new Lathe, Bandsaw, and Pilar drill! My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

      Brilliant…but can I point out…
If something is one of a kind it IS unique and vice versa. They mean the same.
People also mix up *rare and unique* all the time, which is the opposite of what you have done.
Something cannot be *rare _and_ unique*, it is either one or the other, but not both.
Your work is unique MEANS there is only one of its kind.
If you make two or three only then it becomes rare. and is no longer unique. So you can say it is one or the other but not both
