Bowl Turned from Scrap Construction Lumber

- In this video I turn a bowl from a cutoff section of construction lumber beam. The wood was given to me by a friend and he challenged me to turn a bowl from the scrap cutoff. Never one to back down from a challenge, I was happy to chuck up this interesting chunk of wood and see what I could make out of it.
Thanks to everyone who has subscribed to my channel in recent months. Earning a living has required me to travel more than usual this past year, and I have not had a chance to turn much or edit videos lately. Thanks for your patience.

Great work and creativity but I don't get why you don't provide a flatter or wider base on your projects. On your Bradford pear vessel the foot is too small. On this segmented bowl it looks like the base is slightly rounded rather than flat. This will make it wobbled spin.

Beautiful bowl but please try and utilise the wood better by making smaller bowls out of the core of the big bowl.

Hi, first timer on your channel Chas. First I'll mention the great turning. Gorgeous engineered beam bowl :-)That control on the backside of your beautiful Powerall lathe looks very much like a VFD (variable freq. drive) out of a CNC Router . I am currently building one for 3D wood carving. I am swamped with the steep learning curve of new "stuff" . I must go look at more of your other uploads.

i just watched 'segmented wood bowl' ..this is a beautiful piece of turned art ..16 in dia ..just amazing and will make a great gift back to the man who salvaged the construction lumber ..wish i had the skills you have .

Hey Chas... How about revisiting the Bowl to see what your friend did with it? I would like to see the Finish he put on it and know what he did with the Bowl... That was one Awesome Job you did with the Lumber...

Nice Job. Yeah the first time I saw pine used in construction I was surprised. Hard southern yellow pine is popular now in construction. Plenty of strength, but very hard to work.
Pine and "white wood" are used heavily here in Texas.

Turned out very nice. One should note that when using construction scrap lumber to never use a piece of treated lumber. The chemicals used in the process can be extremely dangerous if inhaled from the dust.
Glenn Johnson Very true indeed, Glenn. I don't mess with the pressure treated wood.. this was just plain old pine, so my only concern was the adhesive. I used a mask when sanding and my "shop" is well ventilated when I have the garage door open... Cheers!
I was told that lambeams are treated lumber. I have a piece in my shop right now. I plan on wearing a respirator when I turn it.
That is not treated lumber.

Old video but LOVE the bowl! I worked with wood for 37 years but never turned. Never knew such a world existed! I missed the boat. Hate that. But I always tried to find a way to use every piece of scalp I could. I applaud you sir!!

Very nice looking piece! As a newbie to turning, I’m wondering how you held it in place, centered, when you r versed it to finish off the bottom?
Jim Bennett - I just jam-chucked bowls by using a faceplate (or scroll chuck with the jaws opened wide) on the headstock, with some foam shelf liner material for traction, then bring up the revolving center and “jam” the bowl against the faceplate. That provides a firm enough grasp and drive to finish the bottom with light cuts and sanding pressure.
nice going pal, this piece of lumber is not pine, but spruce. pine does not have the strength for construction
+John Kosichek Actually, this is a piece of a Douglas Fir glulam beam manufactured by Rosboro. And Pine is used for construction, it would be common in Texas, where Chas seems to be from.

The seagull is hilarious.
I've seen beams of that girth used to span the top of garage doors in 2-storey houses. They have to be strong enough to support everything above the front 1/2 of the garage (the back wall supports the back 1/2). If that beam delaminated, it would be Lawsuit City! So, the chance of your bowl delaminating, is less than it splitting.
The wood type, is Douglas Fir, not pine.
I have a few laminated beam offcuts of that and smaller sizes, that I found in construction dumpsters.

You just left the bottom round with no foot on it?
The bottom isn't round. There is a flat area roughly 5 or 6 inches in diameter. But you are correct in that there isn't a foot.

I was under the impression that it's unsafe to turn pressure treated woods? Sure is pretty, though...
The wood is not pressure treated. It is normal construction lumber glued up to make the larger dimension.
