Quite common problem on these engines. It happens a lot that the waterpump on the front side starts to fail or the vacuum solenoid on the driver side which controls the waterpump flaps. If you ignore it the engine will overheat and eventually causes a head gasket failure
C7's way better then
Why can't Audi/VAG get it right with these coolant issues across its engines? The EA888 Gen 3 suffers similar with the thermostat housing.
@@IYKYK-UKcan't compare those water pumps/thermostats to this engine one bit; totally different concept. But your underlying question is the correct one: why can't anybody build a decent water pump anymore these days? It's not like we've been using that for a 100 years now....
@@IYKYK-UK EA888 leaks, doesn't fail unless you leave it for ages.
@@dreamcrusher112but it shouldn’t leak at all
Id say the fact those 3/4 head bolts being easier to break loose than the rest is the reason it lifted the head in the first place. Manufacturer default right there, unless someones been in there before and didnt torque them to the correct spec.
I was thinking the same along with where was the looesening procedure - surely you loosen in sequence and to a single turm per bolt?
Other way around, Bolts were loose because the Head gasket had deformed (Compressed) HG had failed for sure but it sounded like it may have Rod/Bearing issues when we heard it running. Expect it's been Ragged to death and possibly with the waterpump being faulty 😥
@@Redshift-.....it did sound like a bag of spanners, I thought it was a diesel.
Water pump failure and engine overheating. Head gasket failed and water get ingested.
@@jeanfrancoismenard705that's probably the real issue

Better safe than sorry with Ricky, good decision.
May be completely unrelated but I used to inspect / collect high performance vehicles and our transport department did not believe in 99 rated petrol. Many Porsches, Lamborghinis and Ferraris have previously been ran on 95 rated fuel as people who do not understand cars don’t have any idea what they are doing and are there to “save” on costs. Turns out these thirsty vehicles don’t like 95 octane and will blow out the side / top of engines or through pistons and spark plugs. This may be completely unrelated but it’s food for thought
It’s crazy, I knew nothing about working on cars but I love watching RUclips channels on it. Have done for years. It’s at the point that I can pin point the issue almost every time due to the stuff I’ve learnt watching you and others.
Same with me!
Aye... dead on m8
Another low mileage Audi with serious engine problems, see so many, why didn’t the Audi dealer find this, many comments here saying about the same water pump fault, engines have so many ancillaries on them, making so complicated and labour intensive to work on, no wonder writing off, great video thanks.
No messing around and bravery at it’s finest fixing this the least popular Audi RS but possibly the most expensive to fi .
I like it but wouldn’t fancy owning it unless under warranty so will be good to see it rebuilt nd cured .
Well done Dean you’re one rising hands on no messing around RUclipsr I’ve followed since the cheap old banger days 👍
The shiny clean pistons indicate coolant getting into the combustion chamber, water ingestion is actually an old school way to decarb an engine(still used on rotaries)
Or someone keeps adding fuel adhesive with every single fill up.
Check the water pump. It is vacuum controlled and has a sleeve over the impeller. The vacuum line to control this sleeve draws water from the cooling system into the control solenoid causing it to malfunction. That causes the engine to overheat because the sleeve sticks over the pump impeller. Quite a common issue.
there was that code for the water pump too
Can't be the only problem with the car as I expect the dealer to figure out the water pump issue no problem
Could be true but im guessing not likely or the repairs were too expensive so the customer disregarded it@@tomn.1568
I thought vacuum pulled the sleeve over, so if vacuum failed, it would fail safe.
@@tomn.1568 thanks mate! Screenshotted this 🤣
Sensible decision to send the engine out for repair, you've got so much going on ..... and at the end of the day it's a very similar Audi engine rebuild. Keep them coming Dean.
The symptoms of the misfire, smoking exhaust and lack of coolant sounded very similar to the head gasket issues that the Ford Focus RS mk3 suffered with when launched. Some had the wrong head gasket in them.
Back to Vauxhall cavalier days pissing in it

I'd be checking it not damaged repaired or a cut n shut in that case!😂
Absolutely love this car good luck for it.!!!!
The pistons from cylinder 6 and 7 have obviously been washed by burning coolant for quite some time. Hopefully, you're lucky and it is really just a head job.
There is water in the inlet because the water to air intercooler for a turbo is probably leaking… you should test the coolant overflow bottle for combustion gases next time
Genuis you m8.matt Armstrong needs a team your blazing through most of this yourself. Hats of to you budy. Clever man..
Multi spline spark plugs and a lot of other changes are to stop DIY mechanics, so they'll be more inclined to use main dealers and get shafted for over the top parts and labor. £££££
Any parts supplier has the socket for cheap...
With how that head gasket looked, I think it's either lifted the head, or more likely warped it due to overheating.
As an old school city and guilds apprentice it was so easy to work on cars 40 years ago.😊 so full respect to you and your friends for being so skilled in the art of motor mechanics.😊
Can a bad head gasket cause a loss of compression on cylinder 7? Perhaps a leak down test will show. I'm guessing the pump being stuck caused the engine to overheat and then it blew the gasket.
Correct.
Might have some compression escaping out the leak in the head gasket. Could be wrong tho
@@LubomirFotev yeah perfectly accounts for our 30psi we were down! It was leaking into the sump and coolant system
I can honestly say going from a c7.5 rs7 to a c8 rs6 was the biggest regret of my life, constant headaches with them. Alternators and 48v battery system is the worst on them, alternators going 2/3 times on cars that are only 3 years old, waterpumps, creeky pan roofs, mmi’s going blank, honestly any c7 ownes stick with them. Far better car and far more raw.
Got a 2016 a8L s'charged 6 w/ 52k miles on her. Recent trip from Charlotte, Nc. To Boynton Beach, Fl. 30.2mpg @ 78 m.p.h most of the way. No issues yet. Full Carmax warranty up to 💯 k miles
Safe to say that CHG blew on the vee side of no. 7
Worth measuring piston to deck heights though just to be sure it’s not hydro’d
Multispline spark plug means they can sell more tools. Not a technical reason purely economical to rinse customers.
If a $7 socket is too much, then stick with a honda
Just removed the engine in a few hours, priceless. Main dealer would have needed the car for 6 months and a second mortgage on the house to pay for it which is probably why the insurance company got rid. Great video and story as always. The quality and quantity of rebuilds puts most other tubers to shame. 👍👍👍
The only RUclips repair channel that actually knows what he’s talking about 😂
Brilliant content and good to see someone actually doing some research on how these things coming apart rather than randomly trying to pry apart an engine and hitting piston with hammers whilst trying to extract them from the wrong direction......
The crisp clear filming - kudos to the cameraman.

I purchased a low mileage rs3 over an rs7 off lease. Sorry not paying for someone else’s problems after they beat on it then trade it in with bald tires. Pads and disc. Probably a rear end service. @ glad it wasn’t just me that felt the urge as soon as I saw it!
Maybe someone used a pressure washer up into the front grill while the car was running, would make sense that its only in one side, although the filters may have stopped a lot of it, might have even been replaced after it happened which would hide it, as the filter looks relatively new.
Mate, I love your videos, been following since 50K subscribers and the quality of your videos is amazing! I asked it before and i will ask it again, when will you drop some merch? Got plenty of cool cars that would make fit for it :). Keep up the great work.
I picked up an Audi RS7 from We Buy Any Car. It was a 22 plate and the bloke sold it to WEBAC for £74k. It had 4K miles on it. I dropped it off at Blackbushe. Lovely car
I would check the air to water intercooler as sometimes those tend to leak and cause water into the cylinders, although it wouldn’t explain there only being water in one side of the bank we never saw what the other side looked like!
Also removing a head you’re supposed to break the nuts/bolts loose in the reverse torque sequence until they are fully loose so you don’t have any risk of warping the head fyi!
Great video btw!
Could be wrong but i tought they went air-to-air cooling on the c8 platform.
@ that I’m not sure, if it is in fact air to air and there’s coolant in the intake manifold, then there is a possibility coolant got into the vacuum system (coolant pump uses vacuum in these cars) if it’s like the rs5/s4 b9+
Gas testing at the coolant reservoir could help with diagnosis. Also those head bolts didn't look very hard to crack with a short ratchet.
Audi are great in snow but always broken and they burn oil. I loved it though. But expensive to repair.
Was doing the head on a BMW & ran into those multi-spline pattern bolts holding the head on(same pattern as your spark plugs/head bolts here). No socket we had would undo them, so I bit the bullet and bought a full set, cursing because I thought I'd probably seldom if ever use them again & they were spendy. Fast forwards a bit & we're using them almost daily as we run into more and more of that style fastener. Go figure.
For anyone thinking of purchasing an older rs7 model do your homework. They can be a very attractive purchase but the maintenance cost can be insane. Canadian prices. Timing chain $6500, brake jobs $2000 to $3000. If you ever have any turbo issues $1000s more. That being said you aren't buying an audi to save money. I love these cars but can't justify maintenance and the depreciation of new.
Tip
When you pay for an hour on the Audi site, don't read stuff, spent the entire hour screen recording as many pages as possible.
100% download the PDF engine manuals so you can always refer back to them later 👍
New cars are a bag of shit.
Relax
😂😂
That engine is a nightmare! I’m surprised that people willing to work on them exist, and i´m not surprised you're going to outsource the rebuild.
Cracking video mate. Funny that, as you were coming toward the end of the teardown i was thinking, ring RickyREP - i was also thinking hydrod engine until you again showed only water in 1 bank inlet.
Really look forward to watching you and Ricky go through this. He shouted you out the other week which i thought was nice. Lots of respect from you both. 2 good knowledgeable fellas. Petrolhead heaven.
Also. Seems the newer cars get, the more temperamental and problematic they are. Nothing seems built to last these days. Clever marketing, not good for us. The John Deere carry on has to be the worst scam going.
Nice.
I've owned a b8 s5 manual for last 4yrs never been to mechanic except for yrly pinkslips 130 000km. Got manuals for free online and bought obd eleven. Audi is specially intricate and neat 💯
Of the VAG vids out there the only i can say is DO NOT USE electric ratchet tools to refit assembly duties soft material overall vehicle if its a keeper take the time. Apart from that its a tight package
He makes it look soo simple Loving the recent batch of builds you've got going on
The car could have ingested water from spray from HGV while overtaking or hit a puddle, it only takes an egg cup full of water to wreck your engine. I had it happen on a Golf GTi in the 90's. The knocking misfire sound on start up sounds maybe like cylinder 7 has maybe bent a rod or damaged it's bearing and the hydrolock in that cylinder caused the head to crack/lift/gasket fail. UK weather sucks.
Loving the Vids… some serious cars on this chanel love to see it
One of the most beautiful cars ever made. RS7 has always been my dream car.
Dean you channel is growing with every video you release. I so much prefer this channel over other ones because you rebuild cars we can relate too. Your knowledge is unbelievable & content is amazing. Keep it up. Can't wait to See Ricky's (Dav Laaa) video on the engine rebuild.
I was looking, nay marveling at a 1950's V-8 at a hot rod show. The simplicity is astonishing compared to this. The thermostat, for example, sits right on top of the engine, held in place by two bolts and you could replace it for $20 and probably use kitchen utensils to do it. It was ONLY 450 hp though but probably got better mileage.
The water in the intake is probably being carried from the crankcase via the PCV system, hence why that was wet too. Great video BTW, love the car!
Haven't watched in a while, but I remember why I enjoyed your videos. Will try to watch more.
Glad too see you seem to be doing well, I guess compete for cars is working well for you :)
These engines are insanely complex! Like any other I.C.E., you've just gotta dive in. Love the videos and the fact that you don't exclusively work on high-end exotics. The only problem is that I can't compete for any of these cars from America. One day, you should collaborate with a creator here in the U.S., like Alex with LSC. I would absolutely try to win that build.
ARP studs and nuts mod is the way to go, those stupid stretch bolts are very unreliable, especially in a high performance engines.
For some strange reason, I don't like brand new cars and certainly not ones with a lot of cylinders. A well-filled engine compartment means that the engine has to be taken out for too many jobs. It is "just" to change the cylinder head gasket, but "just" is maybe 10 hours or more. It was much simpler in the past, and the more in the past the better in some ways. Sorry for the rant. You are good.
Enjoyed the video thanks, great idea getting this down to RE Performance, you know it'll be done right, looking forward to the rebuild
Well, Dean, you're a genuine person and love the fact that you will have ago at all, but also can admit defeat when necessary and not full of shit like some!! Thank you mate, I appreciate it. Let’s be honest Ricky can build an engine better than I can so for that reason I want him to do this one as I want to watch the video 😂… and yeah I have a few engines laying around at the moment so don’t want to get confused!
Just to diagnosed , wouldn't it have been easier to pressurise the cooling system am check with the borescope if water is entering the piston from the head gasket surface ?

I find it crazy that a car this new and this expensive can have such a failure after only 33k miles! and manufacturers want us to feel sorry for them cos they can’t sell EVs and that it’s costing them so much money.
Its because the car is a load of shite if they was any good they wouldn't be in a scrap yard
It's a 2020 car with low mileage. Audi would normally offer goodwill to repair given how close it is to standard warranty period. I suspect this car has had an incredibly hard life and the modified suspension, 3D plates, screen tint etc all suggest a car that's been hammered and likely had the engine modified too.
@@Dazg-666 calling an RS7 a load of shite is a fucking wild statement to make.
