To swim really fast butterfly, you have to take advantage of every opportunity for propulsion. The place where most swimmers ignore this opportunity is... the second kick.
Thanks for all your videos teaching butterfly, dolphin kick, front crawl and other techniques of swimming. I gained so much from your channel. Although I'd never assigned for a formal swimming class, now I able to swim various type of strokes because of your every explanations on channel. You are like my virtual swimming coach! Thanks again. -Greetings from Malaysia. :)
One of the greatest butterfly drills videos ever and one of the earliest highest quality videos by GoSwim.. I learned butterfly ground up with GoSwim with the 2nd kick and I remember this video very fondly.. I can't imagine swimming fly with out that 2nd kick.. I am not a competitive swimmer and my goal is to not go fast but this technique is so worth learning! Thank you GoSwim for sharing your wisdom!
I'm also in the process of strengthening my arms, core and legs to be able to swim Butterfly better. I still can only swim 50s (but the last metres are a little weak). We've just got to keep training hard. No pain, no gain. Wish you good luck, mate.
Im not much of a flyer but i swim IM and struggled with a second kick more than anyone i kno. I worked on putting a second kick into my fly for over a year befor it became natural but even if it is harder, more exhausting, and slower when you start, it will eventually make you faster
It's always better to get another opinion as to what you're doing. Also, hiring a skilled teacher actually shortens the time it takes to learn a skill. Their experience can help you avoid mistakes that naturally happen.
How about fixing an extra kick - third kick? I've been struggling to fix this, every now & then my coach will tell me that my legs are bouncing out of the water for a third kick. Any advice on how to fix this pls.
@Holycrap27 He mean: Butterfly body movement (dolphin kick) with freestyle arm stroke. I either don't see caterpie, metapod or butterfree here.. The narrator doesn't know butterfree as name of butterfly pokemon.
@aandreyyy1 yea that is pretty decent for someone who just startd. i had a couple people butterflyers on my hs team that swam for a whole year and were only about that fast
You are really great, goswim098! Thanks to you I learned the butterfly swimming! But I have a question. Is it true that you have to learn from a real teacher to get the right technique?
Is it possible to make better times even when you are older?? I just returned to swim a year ago, and I see techniques I didn't know thirty years ago. I keep in good fitness, but I have to train myself because of time shortness to have fixed hours to have a trainer...
i'm 6'0 200 pounds. i swim freestyle sprints and i have the best butterfly on my team, mostly because im also the strongest, but my timing is a little off. i want to drop my 50 time by another 3 seconds by the end of the season. would fixing my kick work well? at my last meet, my coach tried to change around my pull as well to make it more hydrodynamic, but in doing so, my time increased 2 seconds instead of droping it. would the kick help me drop my time or should i focus more on the pull?
@sunnykhoo88 this is the problem with most peoples butterfly . You need to learn to keep it a kick based stroke. The second kick does so much to move you forward
I felt that my arms couldn't be lifted after 10 strokes or more, i can feel like it's too heavy for me to continue to swim the butterfly. the leg was okay, the problem is with my arms. why is this happening?
yea you're absolutely right. i guess i'm lacking arm strength which was probably the main hindrance on why I cant do a 50. Whenever i'm in the pool, i tend to prefer other strokes than butterfly, which could also be translated to my poor butterfly performance. Nevertheless, I heed your advice and thanks for it man!
ouch this looks painful :X, i'm having a hard time synchronizing my butterfly strokes with my dolphin kick as the kick sometimes turns into a freestyle
I don't think that's what she was asking you. I think she was asking you if it is possible to improve at an older age. The answer is yes. Good technique brings efficiency and speed and theoretically less chance of injury.
Hmm.. maybe that's why I swim like shit ? ..because my second kick suck! I'll try this when we start again next season.. Thank you so much for this video ^^,
l love all this videos but when swim in the a swimming pool I'm very slow also I'm don't this reason to make me slow also my phrase fast finished please if you know this reason please tell me
Definitely not a lack of strength, since I see 8 year old's everyday, both girls and guys, swimming great looking butterfly for 50 & 100m repeats. If you get fatigued after 10 strokes, it most likely incorrect technique from either a wrong arm pull and recovery, mistimed kick, or poor body position. If you are serious about improving, check out goswimtv.com, you can get a subscription for $10/month and they have exclusive training videos that they don't put on youtube. I hope that helps.

Great tip. Great instructional vid. Love your kind of humor: "She will feel great... After the pain subsides."
fantastically useful drill progressions. doing them tomorrow at practice! thank you!
Jesus those stretch cords look brutal!
@iwustudent101 - Probably the first "famous" single kicker was Summer Sanders, 200 fly Olympic Champion. There have been many others as well.
I'm also in the process of strengthening my arms, core and legs to be able to swim Butterfly better. I still can only swim 50s (but the last metres are a little weak). We've just got to keep training hard. No pain, no gain.

This video has taught me a lot!
thank you so much ! this really helped me out 😃😁
Thanks. Glad we're helping.

so helpful......
really teaches you...
Well, I better like this video. I'll probably be coming back to it everyday haha...
So kick when your hands go in the water and kick when they come out. Gotcha.
@WujuStyleBlademaster Congrats. Keep up the good work.
I like the stretch cord idea. i have swallowed so much water trying this.

@sketsuarez you wanna make sure you're breathing when your hands are about to come out of the water
"after the pain subsides." Tried it all. Taking tylenol right now. Felt awesome at the time, though. :)
My technique is good I just need to get faster. I'm currently swimming 28-29 second 50s. Should I beef up my biceps more?
But accomplishes a goal in practice, which makes her feel good... after the pain subsides." LOL
u got a come up with ur own butterfly
i'm 6'0 200 pounds. i swim freestyle sprints and i have the best butterfly on my team, mostly because im also the strongest, but my timing is a little off. i want to drop my 50 time by another 3 seconds by the end of the season. would fixing my kick work well? at my last meet, my coach tried to change around my pull as well to make it more hydrodynamic, but in doing so, my time increased 2 seconds instead of droping it. would the kick help me drop my time or should i focus more on the pull?

on the last 25 after you do the two no breath flies what do you do for the rest of the 25?
I felt that my arms couldn't be lifted after 10 strokes or more, i can feel like it's too heavy for me to continue to swim the butterfly. the leg was okay, the problem is with my arms. why is this happening?
ButterFree?
I can't believe its butter.
@WujuStyleBlademaster Holy shit, you swam a 28 single kick. Hot damn.
nice one dude... yeahhh..

Doesn't a single kick put more stress on your shoulders?
ouch this looks painful :X, i'm having a hard time synchronizing my butterfly strokes with my dolphin kick as the kick sometimes turns into a freestyle
I can't make my stroke fast but I know how to do butterfly... And help?
I don't think that's what she was asking you. I think she was asking you if it is possible to improve at an older age. The answer is yes. Good technique brings efficiency and speed and theoretically less chance of injury.
Unbelievable stamina :o
Hmm.. maybe that's why I swim like shit ? ..because my second kick suck! I'll try this when we start again next season..
Thank you so much for this video ^^,
Need more strength, or possibly improper technique. Use a pull-buoy and try series of 25s of arm action only. Then as it becomes easier go for 50s.
i can feel her pain in the arms, shoulders, and legs. that training with a resistance belt is torture.
I think you can do it if you set time/dedication/hard work to do it. Dara Torres was 0.01 seconds from taking a gold medal at 42.
l love all this videos but when swim in the a swimming pool I'm very slow also I'm don't this reason to make me slow also my phrase fast finished
please if you know this reason please tell me
Maybe before learning how to swim, you could learn proper grammar ?
It all depends how fast you were 30 years ago.
i see do second kick as strong as first kick, thanks
GOOD!
I still can't lift my body in the second kick to take breathing.... anybody can gimme suggestions??
I do single kick, but I don't do the kick the swimmer does at the start of the video.
3:20 is like what I am doing...
I mean, a private teacher who can correct your mistakes....
I still can't lift my chest up higher for breathing... anybody can gimme suggestions???
use your arms and legs together☺
Definitely not a lack of strength, since I see 8 year old's everyday, both girls and guys, swimming great looking butterfly for 50 & 100m repeats. after the pain subsides.... hahah
wowowowowow
