Dustin's got a ton of tips for you just starting out your content creation journey. We just really wanted to drop some basics today. How did you like them?
TIP 2 is great! I just wanted to add that.. In PREMIER PRO, I use TEXT edit on the A-roll because it's so easy. You set the amount of space to cut out, and VOILA! DONE! Then I use (I ADDED my short-cuts like ripple delete in a row) all shortcuts in a row from "zxcvbnm" and use my hand and muse (MOVE) SUPER FAST to fine-tune! - JUST SHARING!
I love the editing tips from the same channel i learned about mics and other stuff, for me he is welcome even if it's about something else then editing tips
I liked Dustin's section, very good tips delivered in an informative yet entertaining way, so felt like a natural fit with the rest of the channel. I'd be happy if we see him more often in front of the camera as well as the amazing work he does behind the scenes.
Another technique to make editing faster is using clap cues to visually see the good takes in your waveforms. I clap once if a take is bad, twice if it ended perfect, and 3 times if a take is mostly good until the end. I can edit almost entirely without hearing a thing this way.
0:57 sure the second edit looks more professional but I feel like the second is easier on the eyes. I’m so fatigued from over editing or just super pro editing in every video I watch. I’m starting to feel like less is more. So in my opinion even tho the second edit is “better” I Much rather the first edit.
Agreed. I feel it takes away from the nice b-roll. There are definitely times where the graphics used would work, but the example scene was imo not a great example of when to use it
I love these tips. While I "know" most of them, seeing practical usage and getting the reminder to create templates and such is good. And Dustin is great. Harris is great. Y'all are great. Go forth and continue being great. Great.
As someone who always appreciates some editing tips these are great…for people just starting out. Been craving to learn more ‘intermediate’ techniques and tips and would love if you guys maybe did a 3 part series with this one being beginner, next one slightly more in depth, then a last one for serious editing skills for those wanting to really dive into this craft. And they can all be this length it’s nice to get right to the point and not watch a 30+ minute video. Much love ✌🏻
Just seeing this vid. I love editing. Dunno why but it's fun for me. Still learning more and studying and I feel like if it's enjoyable now as I learn it should be more so as it gets easier.
An additional word of warning on LUTs. They’re an incredible tool, but over 99% of LUTs that you can find online weren’t stressed test with proper color science parameters. Every single LUT in existence expects a certain color space and returns a certain color space, but if this isn’t taken into account, then a LUT made for a certain camera, even if it’s using a standard Rec.709 profile, might not translate properly to a different camera. Like if you made a LUT for a Sony camera, but tried to use it on a Canon, the color science between the two is vastly different and have very different color spaces and gamma curves. This is why the most reliable LUTs are the ones created within DWG and ACES as they’re universal and standardized color spaces that most manufacturers can conform to. Cullen Kelly has one of the best LUT packs out there with precessional accuracy in his tools.
Really like this video. Enjoyed Dustin. Quick hints like this are the best. Even if not used the exact way it gives me ideas to do something I have been planning for a while
I personally rebound ripple delete to A/D and set cut to S. It helps to keep all the keybinds to the same side of the keyboard and makes the whole cutting process faster.
I use a program called Recut to help me do step one faster. It edits out all the silent parts of your video in seconds, which saves loads of time! I'm starting to get the hang of B-roll, though I'm very much still at the beginner stage. The part(s) where I trip up the most in editing is adding animations, overlays, and graphic effects (LUTS). I would love some "beginners" guides on those things which go into a bit more detail than you did here, if you have time. Thanks for the video! I picked up a couple of ideas from this!
Dang guys, I really needed this video right now. I've been struggling to feel motivated to edit lately. I have tons of unfinished videos right now. I start editing for a bit then start a new video, expecting to make the next one easier on myself to edit. Now I have the motivation to go get some videos cranked out and better than ever!!
Need a video on the best way to set up a elgato stream deck mini to help you edit. It makes cutting so much faster, you can even set it up to add default transitions. Also how to color grade webcam footage
Backwards ripple delete is something I hadn't thought about using before, definitely going to be using that going forward! Would definitely love to see more of Dustin and editing tips =)
Hey, do you know what the border circle transition is called. It doesn't even have to be a circle just curious as to what the transition itself is called so that I can find something similar.
Harris I’ve been watching you for years and you’re definitely our stream daddy so please don’t be offended when I say that this was one of my favorite videos on the channel in like a couple of months it just gave us a little insight as well as showed the realistic collaborative exchange Between two brilliant minds. I’m so excited to add some of these tips into my workflow and I really really appreciate you sharing the information about color, grading and especially adding the lots to the full package of the video. You could’ve led with that, but instead just our expectations which is fantastic Thank you very much and great job Dustin I support him on the channel anytime!
I was REALLY hoping youere gonna show how to put ourselves in that Circle and how to animate it. Especially when it expands to the normal full screen shot! Oh well, kickass vid anyway.
my issue with editing isnt how to do things or how quickly i can do things, its that idk when to do things. basically its a form of art so what makes it good is subjective and i dont really know when an effect or transition is necessary or when its pointless. so many channels tell you how to do things or how to edit in a specific style (usually some sort of mrbeast style edit which is not the kinda vibe i like watchin nor is it the kinda video im trying to make) but none say very much about when to use certain techniques or transitions. like theres no use in knowing how to J cut, L cut, zoom out, zoom in or whatever fancy effect if you have no idea when they should even be used if at all.
Would love a long form video, series, or livestream showing the entire process of making a video. Setup, filming, editing, all of it from start to finish
More editing videos. That’s where I couldn’t keep up as a newb. Had tons of video, just had issues getting editing done like thumbnails and divinci resolve.
This vid made me realise that must me really hard to edit talking head recorded by other person. Btw found interesting way to edit talking head. Basically u play vid while watching wave and spam cut shortcut.... in a way like a dinosaur game when chrome offline. But u just catch pauses and all the bad takes, then just kill all empty parts... just sharing, since wondering what one might think of this method.
the second edit seem like they had a little more experience but the vfx was very distracting from the video and made me focus on thing I really don't think I need to at that part just to show off a very cool visual effect but the video was color grade more and didn't seem flat like the just left the video as the raw footage like in the first one also if you want a fast way to ripple delete in davinci resolve and are using the davinci keyboard shortcuts it ctrl+shift+[ will do every on the left side of the playhead or you can do ctrl+shift+] will do everything on the right side of the playhead and if you don't want it to ripple delete than just don't hit ctrl for either one of them if you're on mac than ctrl is the command key btw
To run your household there is a division of tasks. Your dad may work full time and take out the trash. Your mom may cook, do laundry and work part time. You and any siblings you have may do the dishes after dinner and sweep/mop. The specific tasks are more or less the same in terms of difficulty and time commitment. (Besides full and part time work). And if I was gonna ask someone how to do laundry, cook, and work at their part time job. Id ask your mom. If I needed to learn how to do the full time job, id ask your dad. So on and so forth. Ask the expert. The editor in this case is the expert. Harris may understand how to do this, but doesnt mean he can EXPLAIN it as well as his expert. And now he can be in a meeting or record a different video or write a video script. Instead of recording this video.

Can you please cover the steel series nova pro wireless again, you just unboxed it and didn’t review it, I got it based on what you said along with other reviewers but it just doesn’t sound as good as my previous Corsair HS70, they were so much better than this, when I asked I was told “that’s why sonar exists” but if that’s the case why is it so bad out of the box? I can’t even get the audio to sound good and for some reason when no audio is playing, it randomly starts making some high pitch him sound that’s very low it gets so annoying, I have anc off and I’m connected to my phone via Bluetooth, the moment I pause the video for example it triggers the sound for a tiny amount of time, after that it goes back to silent, but it doesn’t just happen in these cases it also happens any time even when audio isn’t playing, can’t tell if it happens while something is playing since, well it’s low volume and something is playing, I’d appreciate if you can cover this not sure if it’s just me, hs70 was so much more comfortable and sounded superior to this by miles along with corsairs RMA they never disappointed I even bought one for my brother because of how good it was, the reason I got this one was because it broke (fell and warranty ended, can’t do out of warranty replacement since I’m not in the US + it’s more convenient to buy a new one and have warranty on that) and I really wanted something where I can connect my phone to it at the same time so I don’t have to switch between headphones and AirPods every time I get off or want to watch a video on my phone (since RUclips premium downloaded videos don’t show up on other devices)
Honestly, the second clip was a bit over edited imo. It feels like the general trend is moving away from busy edits that can be "tiring" to watch and back towards a "less is more" approach. Though it really will vary by shot, content, and context. Some shots will work better with that over-editing technique

To add a bit to this, Backwards ripple delete in Davinci Resolve is in Keyboard Customization under Trim > Ripple > Start to playhead
