"Professional features for non-professional cameras." This is probably the most appropriate statement for this camera I've heard since it's been announced. The grippers which are professionals and enthusiasts aspiring to be pros or wanna be pros are the ones gripping the most about the legit crippled features. But if we could reframe this as a consumer camera rather than the perfect camera, these crippled specs don't matter as much! As a photo enthusiast, tho, I hope they come out with a compact version that does have at least a small evf, mech shutter, and a hot shoe. As a Lumix shooter, we shouldn't have to be forced into the A7C line or Leica for a compact full frame body that suits our WANTS. I would happily pay more for the aforementioned specs.
I’ve been shooting Panasonic since the GH5 first came out and I’m loving it. This was the best video on the S9 so far because it provided all the right context, the other reviews were so confusing. I’d only watched your channel for mic reviews previously, but looking forward to more of your thoughts on cameras
All my pro cameras over the years have been Panasonic. Yes the record limit sucks, but unless I am streaming an event I never shoot that long. So maybe this is my next camera? Open gate is awesome, price affordable, never use a hot shoe anymore, and I hade grading so the LUT feature is fire. Great meeting you BTW at NAB.
I agree with all your points as professional a content creator. I'd definitely pick up a S9 as a b-cam. Why? Well the ibis, it's not brilliant on my A7R5, plus the size. I do a lot of short on the spot interviews, and I'd like something a bit less intimidating. The price is to high, but that will come down. I'm happy at £1000 and £500 for a lens. There is zoom coming out for it, but it's a bit dark at 40mm at f6.3.
If this camera had a rangefinder-like body with an EVF, there would've been no controversy around the whole japan trip debacle 'cause the whole internet would've been just gushing over the new full-frame X100V. Design matters: A full-frame X100V clone = "mad money" Mini S5M2 = "no one cares. who got free trips for what?"
Loved the thumbnail! Made me think of a cyborg or one of the Borg. As far the camera…I think a good fit for the right market, more of a social media focus but can work for anyone. Great travel camera too…and having fun with a camera is underrated. Still in a sponsored video where compensation is free travel etc it will always be viewed as one that is biased. As long as you declare it I don’t see an issue, but personally I don’t put as much stock in them as in ones where folks buy their own. BTW…that hybrid zoom looked like a cool tool! Fun video!
Recently picked up the lumix gx85 full kit 3 lens bag/strap/2batteries/512gb sd card used for $500 and its been fun. Planning on sticking with them for a while
I have actually never used a LUT directly on a camera... It feels like "a decision I don't want to make right now" kind of feature. What are your thoughts on this?
Yeah, when I know I’m shooting for RUclips we usually shoot in LOG. It’s the stuff I want quickly for social media or for personal stuff that I slap a lut on. Makes life easy.
🚀🚀🚀 Great way to explain who this camera is potentially for! I’m a long time Panasonic LUMIX Micro 4/3 user and still on the fence to jump to LUMIX full frame (I did leave Canon full frame for Lumix years ago for what I did for photo/video). After watching this it makes sense to use it for content creation and not expect all the pro features that so many professionals make look for. Looks like a good content creating machine for everyday use. I want to try one even more now 🙌
Really digging this camera. Considering selling my OG S5 and Ricoh GRiii and combining the two in one small body with the S9 to pair with my S5ii. Would you make this move?
LMAO Dustin running with it is FUNNY! LOL!!!! But damn, that stabilization is pretty good. And 6k OPEN GATE? I never heard of it but sounds really useful.
7:15 - THIS!!! THIS IS THE OPINION THAT I WAS EXPECTING FROM Y'ALL REVIEWERS!!! DANG! I mean, it's simple! It's NOT made for pro photographers/videographers. It's NOT the S9's intended demography of audience. It's for content creators TRANSITIONING from smartphone-level production who wants to step up their production quality EASIER, exactly like what Panasonic intended. OF COURSE it has big smartphone-friendly features, OF COURSE it remove features that made a professional camera a professional camera. But the fact that Panasonic nailed this camera for it's intended use & audience, simplifying the S5 Mark II while STILL have the option to unlock MOST of the professional features that the pro-lines, and the fact that they CAN maximize it further with those facts earlier, AND THAT PRICETAG that rivals current top-line APS-C cameras, this could be Panasonic's most important camera in Lumix's history in a long time, and yes it's NOT a perfect camera. I'm a Sony user, and I WISH the ZV-E1 were treated like this. What's wrong with having fun as a content creator? The S9 is a lot more fun than many of my Sony gears, and I think that's what the purpose of this camera; to make photo & video-taking fun again. And that's okay.
I had it running into a capture card for an hour and a half and then it over heated. I was using 6k, though so I’m not sure how long it would last in 1080p
after watchin this vdo you influenced me to buy this tiny fullframe cam Could you recommend this for me ? And does it has versatile third party lens option?
to me the biggest problem about the S9 is how they marketed it : they basically sold this as a "compact entry level full frame fur hybrid users", and even bundled with it a 26mm f/8 manual focus pancake, which is a street photography lens (you wouldn't do much of anything else, and especially not video with such a lens) The problem is that's it's NOT a photo camera. Never was. The sensor reads out pretty slowly, and the lack of mechanical shutter leads to pretty significiant rolling shutter issues whewn taking 12 or 14bit photos. We already had an L mount camera without a shutter (and the same Sony IMX 410 sensor actually) in the form of the Sigma fp, and it was a disaster, mostly because of that lack of mechanical shutter. Second, the camera has no hotshoe, nor does it have a pop-up flash. Having no flash at all isn't only a problem for studio use, it's also a problem for events, even street photography sometimes. Any kind of photography where you'd need light filling to compensate for a harsh sun backlight. Straight up removing all of that of a camera meant to take photos as well as videos is batshit insane. The fact that there IS ample space for an EVF, but it wasn't put in the camera is another pointer that this is a video camera, not an hybrid. Sony managed to fit a larger battery, 0.7x magnification EVF, mechanical shutter and the same sensor size with an 8-stop IBIS in the A7CII. The A7C also has that if you're okay with the smaller EVF, and it's even cheaper than the S9 nowadays. If you take as much photos as you take videos and you still want to have a compact full frae, those cameras are no-brainers over th S9, even at a higher pricepoint. Lumix should have either waited until their 18-40mm lens was ready, or marketed the camera better towards videographers rather than hybrid shooters. The number of people coming to DP review forums wondering if their camera is faulty because they took a picture of a moving car (or whatever moving thing) and it's all wobbly and slanted on the final image is so high that I genuinely think Lumix missed the mark on the marketing. It's a great video camera but it's basically as bad as it gets for photography. I'd even take a more expensive crop sensor camera that has a proper shutter and hotshoe over this. I should have been put on the market as a video tool that can sometimes take a picture or two if you really need it : like the Sony ZV and FX cameras. Those didn't miss the marke and someone buying a ZV-E10 or ZV-E1 knows that they're getting a video centric body, not a video centric claiming to be a hybrid.
The biggest complaint about the "open gate", which I think is not reallty open gate, is the crop. So it's not 1 to 1 to if you shoot 4k. But it can still be helpful if you can take that into account.
Eh? I bought a Lumix G7, a PANASONIC camera in 2015 which shot 4K30 video, that was 9 years ago. Not sure what the point of the Sony 1080p camera reference was.
It should work with a dummy battery, but it won't give you unlimited recording. The recording limit is there because the sensor overheats when recording 4K or over. IIRC, some of the older models can do unlimited recording.
I’ve spent the last two hours watching video after video after video and I feel like you are the only one who’s able to justify the choices Lumix made without downplaying or overhyping the changes. Like you actually seem to be the target audience/get what this camera was intended for.
G100 was released in such a mess, its a good b cam with log option and a good 4k/fhd capture that doesnt overheat, but the marketing . . It was not a vlog cam, but they had the bright idea to market it as such
@@victorsaavedra6595 g100 is such a good b cam, clear fhd , decent 4k , v-log for grading , small as heck and a decent pre-amp. Keep it and maybe buy another lumix cam to compliment it.
Thanks for the video. May I ask, for the hybrid zoom, does the raw file shows the image in hybrid zoom? For example I used hybrid zoom on the 28-200mm. So I assume at its maximum, the focal length will be equivalent to 600mm. Yes, the jpeg will show the 600mm image. But on raw? Will it show a 600mm image, or just the maximum focal length of the lens, which is 200mm? Thanks in advance.
some years ago I sold my beloved Sony A7II to my sister (it was a BARGAIN for her, dont throw rocks at me) but ever since I have that itch.. that itch to get into photography again.. and I kid you not - just yesterday I talked to my wife about how I am thinking about investing into a new camera for when our first child will be born in a few months and just getting into photography again. And now you dropped that banger of an appetizer... i am so intrigued right now Great video, great summary, superb quality as always
Many Thai RUclipsrs who came to Japan also said that they liked S9 when using it more than when it was showed in the paper. They said that it might be a reason why they were all invited to Japan for forcing to use it; not just looking at it for only the specification. However, many of them also accepted that they will use it more for travel / relaxed activities; not for professional works. Lastly, many Thai youtuber who came to Japan mentioned that they did not get any money for reviewing S9; just plane ticket, hotel, transportstion, and some meals. I think the problem with S9 is professional photo / video takers expected it to be more for them. They criticized many negative points without thinking that non-pro users use it or not. Currently, I use GX85 and I really interested in S9. I took video with GX85 that has no jacks for microphone and headphones. I never use EVF. I never do color grading coz I'm too lazy to record it in that white tone to color it later. As a fans who take video of idol / actress from an event, I look for a camera that can help me post 4K video clips of idol as fast as possible (That's why I like 4K Lite) and that camera must have a good stabilisation since using high camera stand or gimbal is too obvious and might not be used in many public locations.
Hi thanks for the review, I like your style. Two things I'd like to ask. 1: is there any frame rate that open gate can be used that can be 50/60p or above. 2: what is the X zoom in video and is there degradation of the video. Thanks again 👍🏻
I have this camera. Do you think there is a way to connect an external flash? Wireless? Or waiting for the firmware update? In the menu there isn't any options about it. Please help
Oh good I was worried I was dumb not knowing where to find LUTs haha I’m being honest, finding stuff like that I have no idea what sites I can trust for those sorts of things. A video on effects and other plugins perhaps? (Paid/free)
Can I use it in a wedding shoot ? If I am stop the record before 15min and record again, that scenario this camera overheat ? Or G9ii pickup is a good choice for me ?
I guess the biggest question I have left with this camera is how is the heat dissipation? Would my Sony? I can't record more than about 15-20 minutes before it starts. Overheating
@@jimshannononsounds I have an a6100 and the thing overheats if I even look at it lol. that being said I have run that camera ragged and it is definitely time for an upgrade.
Gordon Laing tested overheating and compared with a Sony ZVE1. The Lumix lasted about 50% longer. If you want a camera that doesn't overheat ever, get the S5ii over this. If is only $300 more new and should be slightly cheaper used.
Seems like it could've been a great photo specific camera. I'd rather have a hot shoe and mechanical shutter than 6k open gate and IBIS. Take some of the juice from fuji and leica

@@laughingthrushmusic5269 I think it's supposed to eventually, but mine never has. I only use it indoors at about 20 degrees C, up to 90 minutes at 4k. I never use it at 6k
@@laughingthrushmusic5269 The Film sims on the Fuji are cool but I never use them. On paper, the Sony seems better to me because it has more lenses and better auto focus, and some of the dials controls seem better too. But I think the physical lenses are smaller on the Fuji (if that matters to you) and I love how it feels on the hand - feels very premium. That said, I have never held the Sony.
Right when, and just after, I listened to you talking about the Insta360 scandal, three notifications popped up for YT videos about the Insta360 Go S2. 😂 📸
I'd love to have this camera, but I'm on a budget for a bit. Do you have any recommendations for a cheaper camera that I can use while saving up for this one? (I'd mainly use it for product photos and photography of people and landscapes, but it's a bonus if it can be used "always on" for recording!) Great review!!!
that would be the sony zv-e10 i guess. just make sure u have a decent pc or laptop if u need better stabilized footage using sony's catalyst browse software 👌💯
I'm looking to buy my first camera for myself. Correct if me I'm wrong, but it feel like nearly every budget to mid-range camera has issues, whether it's overheating, 1 card slots, size, battery life. I share your decision fatigue lol. I like the a6700 but it overheats like crazy and I want to be able to stream for long periods of time. I like the FX30 but there is no photo/video togle mode. The Lumix S5ii is nice but it's close to 4k Canadian... RIP my wallet
4k CAD for the S5 II (NOT the X?)?! That's 2900USD. Doesn't Canada have price slashes?! You could just pop in the States to get one for almost half the price?
@@musicmaestro88 Video first and photography second. Honestly, it's the overheating drama around the a6700 that's gone to my head. I worry about limiting with longer recording sessions and live streaming.
You ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT on who this camera is for. The people complaining about what they wanted it to have… it’s like come on! You know better than this, there is the S5 ii X that has everything you wish this had! It was very annoying. I shoot on all BMD cameras. I’m buying this for run and gun stuff though. It’s AMAZING!
Fuji’s H2S has 6.2K Opengate and more options regarding ProRes/RAW. It’s APS-C but in video, meh, doesn’t matter. I own the H2S and Lumix S5IIX.. Lumix has better focus, and markers are great.. but the Fuji is def no slouch.
I just think it was an unfortunate launch for a pretty solid camera. The lens options that it launched with really didn't match the camera, all of the press controversy, and some of the missing features combined to something that didn't look all that appealing. It's sad because I think all of that distracted people from what this camera actually offers.
How would this also fare as a stream cam as well?! Currently have a Sony a7iii that I constantly remove from my setup to take and shoot other things. Would be nice to switch it up even though I know this will also be overkill for that😂
I am considering going away from Canon once I have more money, and the Lumix really looks promising How is it for streaming though? If I want to recorde videos for RUclips content, can I attach it directly to the PC and use it as cam or what? :)
How many of you are lusting after a camera right now? If so, which one? Or is it just me.. 😐 always..

Eh? I bought a Lumix G7, a PANASONIC camera in 2015 which shot 4K30 video, that was 9 years ago. Not sure what the point of the Sony 1080p camera reference was.
Question, can I use it as a webcam? I had heard the HDMI out was laggy, is there a USB out?
Will it work with a dummy battery for unlimited recording?
It should work with a dummy battery, but it won't give you unlimited recording. The recording limit is there because the sensor overheats when recording 4K or over.
IIRC, some of the older models can do unlimited recording.
It will literally shut down from overheating even used as a webcam into a capture card
@@user-le8ul4nr5t Thank you for this information and feedback. I appreciate it!
@@Carl-Camera Thank you for this information and feedback. I appreciate it! That’s unfortunate.
I’ve spent the last two hours watching video after video after video and I feel like you are the only one who’s able to justify the choices Lumix made without downplaying or overhyping the changes. Like you actually seem to be the target audience/get what this camera was intended for.
I love compact cameras but no hot shoe and no manual shutter? The S5ii too seems like a much better deal.
Hi, is that peak design strap ?
Whats youre opinion on the Lumix g100? And great vid btw looks like a really sick camera!
G100 was released in such a mess, its a good b cam with log option and a good 4k/fhd capture that doesnt overheat, but the marketing . .
It was not a vlog cam, but they had the bright idea to market it as such
I bought one last xmas. It was my first camera and I love it!! It has given me a great start and now I'm looking to upgrade but I will keep it
@@victorsaavedra6595 g100 is such a good b cam, clear fhd , decent 4k , v-log for grading , small as heck and a decent pre-amp.
And now you dropped that banger of an appetizer... i am so intrigued right now
Great video, great summary, superb quality as always
This isn't the "photography" camera... no nech shutter will disappoint you.
Does anyone know what to do if you need a flash or something. I take product photography , have been using FUJI XT4 , I am looking for something small
Is the IBIS as good as the S5?
is the kit lens a decent lens to start with ? or should i take the $300 and get a different lens?
I have this camera. Do you think there is a way to connect an external flash? Wireless? Or waiting for the firmware update? In the menu there isn't any options about it. Please help
Oh good I was worried I was dumb not knowing where to find LUTs haha I’m being honest, finding stuff like that I have no idea what sites I can trust for those sorts of things. A video on effects and other plugins perhaps? (Paid/free)
Can I use it in a wedding shoot ? If I am stop the record before 15min and record again, that scenario this camera overheat ? Or G9ii pickup is a good choice for me ?
Its not the people offering free trips to Japan, its the RUclipsrs who are accepting it instead of paying themselves....
I guess the biggest question I have left with this camera is how is the heat dissipation? Would my Sony? I can't record more than about 15-20 minutes before it starts. Overheating
I have the ZV-e10. No over heating issues, even when connected to Camlink
Over heating isn't the issue, the record limits will kick in before overheating I'd imagine
Seems like it could've been a great photo specific camera. I'd rather have a hot shoe and mechanical shutter than 6k open gate and IBIS. Take some of the juice from fuji and leica
Just letting you know senpai, your discord link in invalid. And also have you heard or tried the software sheep chat? really think its a game changer and plus i need a tutorial haha thanks for the great content man
Can you use it as a webcam? And i mean without hacky solutions or extra junk to connect to it.
My Fuji XS20 does 6K open gate. About the same price. No recording limit.
Good for you
Does the xs20 overheat in 4k?
@@laughingthrushmusic5269 I think it's supposed to eventually, but mine never has. I only use it indoors at about 20 degrees C, up to 90 minutes at 4k. I never use it at 6k
@@munirone I am very torn between the XS 20 and the a6700. The Fuji just seems like more fun and inspiring
😅 looking for a new camera! Got me interested! First time seeing the content, dope stuff.
Fuji definitely has 6k open gate lol and have had for years now. I do wish Sony had it 🙈
What about using this camera as a webcam? Do you use a Cam Link?
real question, what brand nail polish do you use?
Is it good for livestreamers?
I would like to know too!
6k Open Gate = 4:2:0 colors
Great…such a badass new tech.
*In 10bit.* 6k downsampled in a 4k timeline has the same color information as 4:2:2.
Have u seen the new go xlr updates
"They flew me to Japan" that explains why almost every S9 review I see on RUclips is set in Japan. I was wondering why. 😂
Do you have a link for the lens?
Loved the video! Also…here’s some engagement! 🧐
first time here on your channel! love it! ❤
Whats the strap your using there , its got peak design logo but not the mico clutch as that doesn't have the grip ...? new model or custom.?
What's your use-case? You're hardly going to be disappointed with the a6700 as an 1st camera... even the a7iii is on sale right now.
You might have expected this question, but dose it have clean HDMI?
Yes
@@harrisheller respect
Fuji’s H2S has 6.2K Opengate and more options regarding ProRes/RAW. It’s APS-C but in video, meh, doesn’t matter. I own the H2S and Lumix S5IIX.. Lumix has better focus, and markers are great.. but the Fuji is def no slouch.
Yo your accessories for S9 super FLY!!! Can you do a video on it?
No EVF has not been an issue. Damn impressive little camera though
What wrist strap is that on the s9?
Would this be good as a main stream camera?
Can I live stream with the new S9 camera?
Hey Harris! I I am shooting with a beefy Gimbal what large/heavier lens would you recommend?
9:30 Hello. Will hybrid zoom affect the image quality?
Yes, it’s a digital crop. You lose resolution the further in you zoom.
How does this camera compare to Sony A7C II for photography?
It doesn't.
The teasing for S1H , We saw you .....
Man... cameras are so expensive. I'll keep this one in mind if I'm ever in the market for one.
That beat at the end was fire 🔥
It's an original track made here at the Senpai Recording Studio. Released to the public on StreamBeats soon ❤️
I just think it was an unfortunate launch for a pretty solid camera. The lens options that it launched with really didn't match the camera, all of the press controversy, and some of the missing features combined to something that didn't look all that appealing. It's sad because I think all of that distracted people from what this camera actually offers.
Thinking of getting it. It’s like 1200 on Ebay. But it’s a mystery why there are no good small lenses for it.
@@BartRos1980 Yeah I think that's really the missing piece here
🔥🔥🔥 Great Video awesome camera.
How would this also fare as a stream cam as well?! Currently have a Sony a7iii that I constantly remove from my setup to take and shoot other things. Would be nice to switch it up even though I know this will also be overkill for that😂
I need to see how long it can shoot in 1080p. I used it with a capture card for an hour and a half before it overheated but I had it running in 6k
@@harrisheller do they have dummy batteries for it or is it still overheating with one.
Cool AF!
Definitely gonna get this one
I am considering going away from Canon once I have more money, and the Lumix really looks promising
How is it for streaming though? If I want to recorde videos for RUclips content, can I attach it directly to the PC and use it as cam or what? :)
