Shane, You need to try 65:24!!! If you don't know already, it is my favourite aspect ratio!! I done so many photo walk video with photos shot in this aspect ratio. I agree S9 is really nice for travel I did the same for my recent overseas trip and left my S5II, A7CR, Leica Q, XH2 all at home. It's not perfect, but the limitations actually aren't as bad as people thought it would be. I agree electronic shutter is not really a problem to me at all from my last two trips and I shot thousands of photos day and night, outdoor and indoor! Merry Christmas and have an awesome 2025!
Thanks, Richard! I will give it a go mate! It's definitely something I'll try coming up. I think people give stuff a hard time if they either haven't used it, or if they are pros looking for something else. Glad you're enjoying the S9. I have not had an issue with it now on two trips away either. :) Great recent reviews too mate, you're a total pro!
I took it as a backup to my SL2 (which had a glitch on day one, so it was my sole L-mount camera) in a trip to Venice in mid-October and it worked like a charm - within limitations. The hand-held multi-image with stabilization was a fine substitute to the 47Mpx on the SL2 that I couldn't use.
Just remember, you have to pick the thing that you enjoy the most, and I really enjoy using this! 😎 I hope you're all having a nice end of 2024. It's getting hot here, so get ready for some more blue sky videos over the next few months. ☀ Thanks for watching!
I just bought an S5IIX with the 20- A60 and 85mm 1.8. I think it was only $2100 USD. Also got the 28-200. What do you think about the 28-200 with the S9 as a travel camera? Also, how do they make the hybrid zoom work w/o loss of resolution? Seems like they must be resampling do fill in the missing pixels??
Panasonic S9 is the most fun camera that I have used. Fuji is right up there as well but I was sick of their AF and bad IBIS. Also had Canon R8, Sony A7C II but they were lacking in some departments. I sold Panasonic S35 f1.8 and now I am rocking small Sigma 45 f2.8 which renders similar images to my all time favourite Fuji XF 35 f1.4. Fantastic combo for travel, kids and street. Small size, IBIS, full frame, pretty good battery, good AF, great LUT feature and good app. In my opinion really underrated camera and I'm glad that I didn't hear all those haters online. I just regret that I didn't wait couple of months as now there are fantastic deals for S9. I could buy brand new S9 for almost the price of used Fuji X-E4 which is a crazy good price.
I made a few short films and have been using S5IIX with the new Sigma lens 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II. It has been working great for me. I'd like to try Lumix S9 as a backup camera.
Nice! It'll match great with that. I use my S5IIX as my main camera in the studio and the S9 is usually the second shot when I need it. It's a fun little camera!
As a filmmaker, I think the S9 received an unwarranted attack on its release. I have the S5ii and I would gladly use the S9 as a b-cam. It's much more capable than many people suggest given that it has the same sensor as the S5ii/x. Headphone jack? Don't care. I record audio with external or wireless audio recorders. The camera's audio works fine as scratch for syncing in post. I also do video and audio tests when I first get a camera before I use it for projects. I think the S9 is much more than a travel camera. P..S. Do you remember the ISO setting you used for the shot at 9:13 ? Yes, the 20-60mm "kit" lens is much better than most kit lenses I've used in the past. So glad I picked it up.
Thanks for the video Shane - I actually saw one in use in the wild a week back, which rekindled my interest in it. I think if I didn’t have my S5ii, then I would totally get one and pair it with the sigma I series primes, though sadly those lenses for l mount are rare as hens teeth. If they ever make an S9ii, I hope they at least give it a faster reading sensor if they insist on keeping it as e-shutter only, or give it the option for an electronic first curtain so flash can be used.
I’m pretty new to photography, and I picked up the S5IIx…walked around DC and NYC with it. At no point was I like “if only I was carrying 250 less grams then this would be doable”. I’d still need a bag, or a neck strap, you can’t fit the S9 in a pocket with the 20-60mm or the 50mm f/1.8 on it. I really don’t understand why the S9is “good for travel”, I feel like the s5ii is just as good, if not better due to the evf. While saving 250 grams would not have helped ME in any way, I think I would not have gotten certain shots without the evf. I love the live lut workflow, but that is basically the same on both cameras, as is the lumix lab integration. I really wish I understood how that extra 250 grams has such a big effect in the eyes of others.
I started photography with Nikons (D90, D600), then mirrorless A7 mk I, Fuji X-E3 , X-E4, Canon R8, Sony A7C II and now Panasonic S9. I by far prefer smaller form factor of rangefinder style bodies like A7C II and S9. I carry those in a small waist bag which wasn't possible with bigger bodies. Of course it makes most sense when you pair them with small lenses. My favourite is Fuji X-E4 + 27 f2.8 WR followed by Panasonic S9 with Sigma 45 f2.8. I do love them as they are taking less space, they are less obtrusive for other people and they react to them differently than to bigger bodies. Lower risk of thief noticing smaller camera and even if they notice more often than not they think it's some cheap compact. No evf is no issue for me as I already switched to different style. Low angles from the ground, shooting from the hip, shooting from above, near the wall. Evf is fine for perfect framing but it's also limiting or just harder to use in some scenarios. Weight of 250g doesn't seem big but I really feel the difference and I can simply just now add Dji Pocket 3 for some additional video versatility. I also have wife and two kids and it's exactly when I started to value smaller camera system in my life. Plenty of other stuff that is hauled around with them on trips.
@@MrRafalEn I want to try holding one I guess, because they look to be about the same size and the lenses are pretty big for any full frame camera. Any small lens for the s9 is also a small lens for the S5IIx…
@@MrRafalEn even that sigma won’t fit in a waist bag attached to the s9 I think. Basically, I don’t think the s9 is portable like an x100v is portable. As soon as you attach any decent lens, I think it’s basically the same experience…don’t have to use the evf just cuz you have it, it has the same style screen as the s9.
@@MaximoJoshua It fit's comfortably in my waist bag but I agree that my Fuji X-E4 + 27 f2.8 was even better but I don't like their AF and IBIS in X100VI is still jerky so I had to sell Fuji gear. It's so dumb that some many of the creators/reviewers hate on this camera.. THEY want a small FULL FRAME camera, but then complain about missing features, well yeah no crap.. you have to take things off to make it smaller. It's not like the S5II and just a huge empty case with a tiny camera inside it.
Thanks for the great insights. I'm a beginner photographer & I'm primarily going to use this camera for still photos, landscape/travel photos and minimal video. Should I get the Lumix S9 20-60mm lens or Canon R8 with 24-50mm lens(both cost same)?
If primarily photo why bother with s9? IVF is very handy for photos and R8 would be much better choice imho. But when choosing camera choose the system and the lenses before anything else. Consider what can be your upgrade path etc. Because changing system costs much more than changing the body. Overal now Lumix is not the best system for photographers, because what your upgrade path would be? S1h? It would be very controversial, while Canon or Sony or Event Fuji has much better upgrade path and lenses and support, and second hand market for photographers
Good question! I think from memory it doesn't. It's not a mode I've ever used on any of their cameras. I'll have to double check, but I don't remember seeing it on the S9.
Can you compare the high res 96mp photo to the photo from a Sony 61 mp camera or a S1R? Curious to see how close or better the 96mp mode is compared to the single-shots of the high-res bodies.
I don't have any of those cameras sorry. I think Tony Northrup did a comparison on the high res mode on the GH6 back in the day vs. some other larger sensor camera. (it was either that or the G9II video)
Yes mate! Man, Panasonic is really trying to take my money. To switch to an S9 / S5 II / s1h Mark II Studio setup would be pretty freaking cool. Especially for doing concert photography versus micro 4/3
What do you think about the Lumix S5d? the S5d with Kit lens is shy below 1000 Euro at the moment. I was thinking of upgrading from my mft E-P7 to the S9 but seeing the S5d for so low I was thinking maybe to go for this one I like the snall size of the S9 but I am not sure if it's worth the higher price. I have no real use for life luts and so on but damn the s9 is a beauty😂

Weather sealing is definitely a consideration. The ZV-E1 is a solid video camera, but due to the sensor, it might not give you the same sort of higher megapixel images as this, but the Sony has its own set of advantages and vice versa.

I used the S9 for about a month but had to return it after it overheated four times while serving as my C-camera on an indoor shoot; and I also discovered that it cannot be charged via the USB-C connection while recording.
If you’re shouting 5 or 6K it can overheat but 4k doesn’t, I use it all the time in the studio 422 10-bit 25p. There an example of it in this video. Weird !
I want to switch my S5 II X for the S9, but I live in the Caribbean and the overheating problem is seriously worrying me... 😐 I may stay with my S5 II X.
I just got the S5IIx and took it while traveling around DC and NYC, and it was totally fine. I don’t really get why people think the S9 is more travel friendly, I would still have a strap and a bag using either camera (because once you add a lens neither is really pocketable). I also think the EVF comes in super clutch while traveling. To each their own I guess. I’ve just never been walking around and been like “I can’t go on, if only I was carrying 250 less grams that would really make all the difference”.
This camera is just chunky for traveling especially if you would like to bring some lenses which are not prime. Of course it makes good pictures but this is not the point.
I don't understand who this camera is for. Usually when the decision is made to drop the EVF, it's to make the camera tiny, like a GM1 or a Ricoh GR, but the S9 is not tiny. When companies remove the grip, it's because the system has tiny lenses that don't require you to have a grip, but there's only one such native lens for the mount. I honestly think anyone who gets this over an S5II at the current price has been bamboozled. Maybe it makes sense for someone who already has an S5II and wants a second body, but for $200 less than an S5II, why not just get a second S5II? This camera reeks of executive decision making like: we don't want to tap into this market... we don't want to cannibalize this product etc. Just make a good camera! We know you know how to.
this camera is more targeted towards video and easy pictures with LUT, alot of people don't use the EVF at all because they are used to smartphone photography if you actually used the S5ii you would notice that the HUGE evf with that internal fan ruins the camera and makes it too big and heavy i had both and i don't use the EVF and the S5ii was a pain to use
I find myself reaching for the S9 over the S5II anytime I leave the house or go on a trip somewhere. It's a fun camera to shoot with which is hard to explain to people if they haven't used it. Getting the most out of the lenses I already have is important to me.
@@mdenjoyer831you have the identical lut workflow on the s5ii…also lumix lab integration. You save 250 grams by giving up the evf which is a pretty terrible trade imo.
I had many cameras and S9 is by far my favourite to use. Combination of small form factor (I like lack of grip by the way), full frame sensor, best IBIS in the industry, great LUT feature for both photos and videos, fantastic app, good AF and most importantly it's really fun to use just like Fujis. It's more capable for video than my previous Canon R8 and Sony A7C II was and it's very capable for photos too. I take my S9 with small Sigma 45 f2.8 whenever I leave the house. The same I did with Fuji X-E4 but it was lacking in AF and video. Ricoh for example was too small, too fiddly for my big hands and video on that thing is non existent. Anything bigger than S9 on the other hand meant that it was living on the shelf in my house. Pick the right tool for the preferences.
@@MrRafalEn Fair enough. I wouldn't be as hard on it if it wasn't for the price. You can often get an S5II for a couple hundred less than an S9, which makes it hard to justify imo.
I'm sure it's a good travel camera, by specs, only if you have a small and light lens. But without a mechanical shutter (or stacked sensor) this will never be a great photo camera, no matter how much some influencers will swear by it.
If you missed the obvious, this was a vacation, not a professional shoot. That crap made no difference to the result for my use case. I literally addressed this in the video. 😂
I’ve shot weddings using electronic shutter for majority of the day. For some users it’ll be a great photo camera. For some it won’t meet all needs. Still a great photo/video camera.
People don’t use laptops anymore. People don’t watch TV anymore. People are watching videos on their phones. You don’t need super massive video files to post things on Instagram. You can use your phone and it’s fine. You do not want to complicate your life in this way. trust me if you’re a professional photographer. Well then that’s a different story and I feel very sorry for you because you have to use equipment like this it must be a horrific job and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
I bought one because videos like this suggested I get a “real camera” instead of using an iPhone. I thought that sounded like a good idea. It wasn’t. I hate the S9. And I don’t think I will ever buy another camera again as long as I live. Using the phone is light fast and easy. I can go anywhere in the world and shoot reasonably good quality video with a little thing in my pocket, which also has a bigger screen than the S9. The smallest video format the S9 can shoot is still MASSIVE, and it takes FOREVER to transfer to your phone IF you can get the software to work, which sucks ass btw. Basically the only way to get your videos off of the damn camera you need to carry a laptop with you. Well, I’m not carrying a brick, just to suit another brick. Instead I bought a second iPhone and I’m selling the S9. Good riddance.
Then you are simply not the target audience for this camera and don't know how to use it properly. Last weekend I was shooting with Panasonic S9, I picked my preferred LUT for a nice ready to share output. I shot in MP4 Lite format. After shooting couple of clips I have uploaded them within minutes using Panasonic LAB app and then transferred them to my wife. I also shot with my iPhone 15 PRO at that event but with iPhone you have to shoot in Apple Log as standard profile is an over sharpened mess and looks horrible. Shooting in LOG means files are also bigger and you have to edit them. You probably can do it on the phone but I am not a fan of it so I did it at home in DaVinci resolve. End result was fine but nowhere near results from my Panasonic S9 shots and I had to edit them before sharing with anybody. I won't even start elaborating how much of a gap is between iPhone and full frame sensor with proper lens regarding photo quality.
Non sense. If you're willing to shoot with slower lenses, FF has no size disadvantages. For example look at the Lumix 18-40 for FF and the olympus 9-18mm for MFT. Both of them weigh the same while the FF lens has a larger zoom range, better macro and covers a 4 times larger sensor while only being 1/3 stops slower, though still 1.7 stops faster by equivalence. The problem is the lack of more options for small, slower lenses.
@@Wildridefilms you can always point to the odd lens that corresponds in focal range and equivalent speed but most FF lenses are (equivalently) faster and therefore heavier and bulkier. And for travel that's not what you want or need. Especially if you want more depth of field, where then the low light advantage disappears completely: eg f4 MFT gives you f8 of FF DOF saving you 2 stops ISO.
Not even going to watch this. Most cameras are good. You'll be fine. No actual photographer cares this much, only talentless tech nerds obsessed with specs sheets.

I may stay with my S5 II X.
No EVF a BIG deal breaker
This camera is just chunky for traveling especially if you would like to bring some lenses which are not prime. Of course it makes good pictures but this is not the point.

Excellent 👌
We know you know how to.
this camera is more targeted towards video and easy pictures with LUT, alot of people don't use the EVF at all because they are used to smartphone photography
if you actually used the S5ii you would notice that the HUGE evf with that internal fan ruins the camera and makes it too big and heavy
i had both and i don't use the EVF and the S5ii was a pain to use
Main Panasonic mistake is lack of view finder, among others.
It's a bad travel camera because it's full frame. All full frame cameras are bad for travel due to their ridiculously heavy and cumbersome lenses.
😂
@@Wildridefilms you can always point to the odd lens that corresponds in focal range and equivalent speed but most FF lenses are (equivalently) faster and therefore heavier and bulkier. And for travel that's not what you want or need. Especially if you want more depth of field, where then the low light advantage disappears completely: eg f4 MFT gives you f8 of FF DOF saving you 2 stops ISO.
It's all plastic, no metal
Not even going to watch this. Most cameras are good. You'll be fine. No actual photographer cares this much, only talentless tech nerds obsessed with specs sheets.
You doing ok bro?
Thanks for helping the algorithm 😂
