I don't comment on videos often (or at all actually) but just wanted to say I found this video particularly enjoyable. The editing and flow was easy to watch and funny. Great video :)
Panasonic has been SO CLOSE to making the perfect camera for YEARSSSS. And now that they have really good phase detect auto focus combined with all the other great features like really good IBIS...they may have just finally done it. Can't wait to see this tech start trickling down to their more affordable cameras. A G85 with PDAF would be the perfect for me, for example.
Recently ventured into the world of DSLR with a Lumix G7 and Im in love with this camera. I can only imagine how nice their new models are. Sony never really did it for me on their UI/menu nav alone. Its always felt cumbersome and tedious to me.
Panasonic has been killing it since the G9 in 2017, which was years ahead of its time, especially shooting 4K60p. It still matches or beats many cameras in 2023. The S5ii is a steal considering it's $500 cheaper than both the a7iv and R6ii. Panasonic also has the best stabilization Ive ever seen in any camera and the video always looks great. Im a current Canon R10 owner but Ive owned or shot with all the major brands. S5ii is on my short list if I want another FF camera again.
I know you probably won't see this comment..... Cause who reads all the comments. I just wanted to say your videos are really nicely done. The passion shows through. Keep up the great work.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but this is probably the happiest and most “giddy” I’ve seen you in a long time! Japan will do that to ya. I wanna go back soon! Also, great editing!
I'm still repping the G7 and the stuff you can get away with it is mind blowing if you know what you're doing, The Lumix line in general is just highly overated but easily best budget line, and yes, even the camera showcased in this video just for those features could be considered a budget camera.
I'm renovating my equipment, and my friend is letting me borrow their Fujifilm X-T3 to see how I enjoy it. My main use will be in my room, but I also want to do some outside photography / videography . So, my question to you, what camera would you recommend?
I'm using GH4 still for years. Where do these S5 cameras sit in range? Are they below the GH series? I don't think GH series has phase focus yet do they? Unless the GH7 has it...
FIrstly, the IS is really cool. The 4K crop at the beginning of the video is definitely lacking definition though, it's not sharp. (edit: Other parts of the video, shot in the studio, are much sharper.)
@@andersistbesser Naw, it really has issues prioritizing what to focus on. And every so often just forgets to focus. But for the most part it works fine.
No mention of autofocus? Have they improved it on this camera? That’s what always seemed to be the Achilles heel for Panasonic in the RUclips space for vloggers or other RUclipsrs on the go.
They waited too long for the S5 IIX so I bought a used A7RIV instead and sure teh 4K is cropped but I can use my non full frame lenses on it from my A6500 and it's cropped but full frame I have 61MP for photos and those pictures are breathtaking! I'll wait for the GH7 or whatever comes out as I already have all the glass I need for MFT and it's IBIS is betterbecause of teh space the sensor has to move around.
Just so we are clear. I had to go back and freeze the frame at 1:23 to make sure we were on the same page on manga selection or this relationship isn't going to work. You pass.
8:03 it looks like your camera connects to your phone using Wi-Fi. The reason why your phone keeps disconnecting from your camera is because your phone detects that there’s not an Internet connection on the camera’s Wi-Fi signal. Has nothing to do with the camera, it’s just a problem with the way most smart phones handle Wi-Fi connections.
Can someone explain LUT to me, please? It is the first time I am hearing that term, but is it like in-camera filters? I typically just work in RAW and make adjustments in LR and PS with nik collection.
LUT stands for Look-Up Table. An easy way to describe it is it’s a color preset. The more technical description is it does dumb math to take a specific color and luminance value, and change it to a different color/lum value. The key thing to know about LUTs that a vast majority of people don’t know, especially those that sell LUTs, is LUTs expect a certain color space and return a certain color space, so you have to use LUTs in a very specific way either from someone who actually knows what they’re doing technically, or if it’s directly from the camera manufacturer.
but how is the auto focus? I thought that always was an issue with Panasonic cameras and that should be a high priority feature for content creators. on the steps it was pretty bad
I’ll talk more about it in the next video about it. They finally added phase detect into their cameras. Autofocus was good. Not quite Sony level, but good.
This is certainly a great camera, but I’d suggest another, the newly launched Fujifilm X-S20 also has 6K open gate, IBIS, does 10-bit 4:2:2 internally and even 12-bit externally, etc., but it‘s not full frame. Not the best RUclipsr camera but it’s way cheaper. Certainly worth checking out.
There is a reason the X-S20 is way cheaper, it's way less of a camera. Smaller sensor, not weather sealed, poor 1/4000s shutter, one card slot, crappy low res EVF, no headphone port etc...the S5ii is a professional camera, the X-S20 is an entry level camera.
@@michaelbell75 Of course, X-S20 is more of an enthusiast camera, thus the lower price, I'm just saying it is worth considering for what it offers, which is a lot. It's always nice to know what else is out there to make a better informed purchase decision. I think majority of RUclipsrs will appreciate the included Vlog mode which has features tailored for creators and other more advanced features that I mentioned in my original comment. Also, you're wrong about a few things. X-S20 has a headphone port and even a separate mic input, the EVF is 2.36m dots (same as Lumix S5) so I wouldn't really say it's crappy and it also has a electronic shutter speed of 1/32000s.

I've been thinking about getting the a7iv for a while now but this seems like a great alternative. I do photo and video though so I'm not sure which to get
If you're doing both photo and video, stick with the Sony, The eye auto-focus is godly for photography. The S5ii does finally have phase detect auto focus, but it's their first generation and nowhere near Sony levels in terms of speed and accuracy.

Ok, now let's talk about autofocus. My current Panasonic has a real weakness for autofocus. And I would say that autofocus is a pretty important feature for youtubers.
@8KisOK , Bro Chill we are on the same team. I am a daily "panny" user. I rock the lumix G85 and regularly struggle with the contrast detect. Forgive me for doing my due diligence before jumping on a new camera. So don't come at me with that attitude you long faced, mud sniffing, shoe lace double knotting, zipper snagging, Expo marker liquid sipping, forehead sweating, rich off a steam roller lawsuit causing permanent long lasting injury and bodily disfiguration looking, finger in slime cup enjoying, sock puppet making, expired milk drinking, clueless, indecisive, procrastinating, wishy-washy, flip-flopping, fence-sitting, hemming and hawing, dilly-dallying, time-wasting, opportunity-missing, regret-having, excuse-making, self-sabotaging, camera-hopping, panny-dropping, lumix-flopping, contrast-detecting, focus-hunting, blurry-shooting, over-exposing, under-developing, color-grading, noise-reducing, sharpening, cropping, resizing, exporting, uploading, deleting, re-doing, never-satisfied, always-complaining, never-improving, hobby-ruining, passion-killing, joy-stealing, soul-crushing, creativity-stifling, shell of a soul, dust bunny collecting, stale bread eating, sad excuse for a clown.
@8KisOK So, let me talk about this given my personal experience as someone who does an in home studio with live streams and video recording, with a multiple camera setup for our PGF show. I use a Lumix G9, and had the G7 before it. For our PGF show once per year, I rent Sony cameras - this year I have the ZV-E1 and the ZV-E10. Last year was the Alpha 7r Siii Anyways, the reason people bring it up is that a majority of the line from Panasonic so far has had problems with it. And I can say as a daily user of the G9 it absolutely sucks at autofocus, even on a tripod in a podcast setting - the moment I look sideways or down, it struggles so hard to stay focused. Autofocus is a must for me given I have no one behind the camera, so when the background of my video is what it focuses on instead of me, that's a problem. And given he didnt' talk about autofocus, it's obviously going to be a question many have. It's a known problem that causes so many RUclipsrs to lean towards Canon or Sony. Sony, typically known to have industry leading tech in regards to autofocus. Because as a Panasonic user for my entire youtube career, one of the primary reason for PGF I rent sony cameras, multple, is the vastly superior autofocus. It's one of the single most important aspects for most youtube content creators who can't be behind the camera to manual focus. I went with the Lumix line because Panasonic has always offered a lot of features for way cheaper than Sony's stuff is. And, this camera right here that he's talking about matters to me. Because I am tired of renting extra cameras. I finally just want to have 3 or 4 cameras at the ready, and the first camera I want to replace is my primary shooter in the G9 and start using that as a top down camera instead. But, all my lenses are panasonic and I don't want to have to use coverter kits. I had been looking into buying the ZV-E1 because it's got all the video features I want for 1000 less than the alpha I do love, but also if I do that it means I have to invest in a whole new line of lenses - but the overheating issue is a real thing. I have had it happen once already in the past day, inside my home, in my basement studio, with the AC keeping it at 60 degrees F here. If it's overheating in that environment... when the alpha never had that problem... It makes me want to consider this new Panasonic instead. If it doesn't have an overheating issue in my given use case and environment, and it adds in the same level of autofocus the sony camera's bring - I can not only save money on not needing to swtich out all my lenses, I can save money on purchasing the more expensive alpha body if this gives me all the features I care about. Which is not only a full frame to maximize the light it can instake on set, but the ability to be always on with video out (all cameras allow this basically, but not all of them can stay always on due to heat concerns), but I really need the auto focus badly. It is the primary feature that matters most. Because most cameras basically have all the same features - then it's just about the sensor and lense being used. I don't care as much about the 6K stuff, though it may make a difference in some very specific vidoes I shoot, like product reviews. The option is at least nice. In the end, it's probably true that. most of their new cameras have fixed the autofocus problem. But people like me aren't buying the latest and greatest all the time. We go with Panasonic usually originally due to cheaper price, but we have been sacrificing autofocus for a long time. I am in the market for a couple cameras including a new main shooter, and I happy to hear THIS doesn't have the headaches my G9.
I was done when I heard $2,000 dollar camera. Content creation is very difficult as it is, but with tech being very pricey it is hard to keep up with high quality production value content when so many products are out of your price range.
So as a self made youtuber, let me start by saying the frist thing you should invest in is some sort of improved audio. Use your phone for video shooting - you can create stunning videos with just your phone plus some nice externa; audio setup. That's it. That's all you need. But when you finally make a little money, that's when it might become possible to up the qualtiy to the next level. You see, phone cameras are so damn good in so many situations, that to really get the improvement you notice yeah, you will spend 1500 to 2k on a mody and another 1 to 2k on a lens. But it's not NEEDED. These are all nice to haves. Your phone is plenty good.
@@NintyPrime Completely agree! Audio is more important than video. 1000's of TikTokr's with millions of followers + MKBHD on his channel AutoFocus uses just a phone.
I do wish camera companies (not limited to those) would stop using stupid arbitrary names for their features. I've had a Lumix G7 for several years and still don't know what half the stuff is in the menus because it's all made up words that bear no resemblence to what they do. It's terrible UX design and out of principal I've just never Googled it, and tbh after several years it's clear I haven't needed any of it. Just like few people need a $2000 camera for creating social media content.
So.. 2 questions.. first the big one. 1. Given more recent news coming from Canon and Nikkon about how anti-consumer they are, can you look into Lumix (or pannasonic) and see how USER REPAIRABLE they are and will they try to say 'you dont own what you buy'? Does Lumix offer replacement parts like Sony does (not just generic parts, like INTERNAL parts, like if the power or HDMI connector breaks, can you get the part and take it to an INDEPENDENT REPAIR shop and have that part replaced? Canon recently refused to send someone a SCREW for her camera claiming "there maybe complications in the repair" while Nikkon, would NOT allow someone to sell a lens they OWNED over seas (on ebay). I think its extremely important, before committing to ANY eco system, not only how consumer friendly they are, but what their stance is on Right to Repair. Are they a 'Framework' laptop? Or are they an Apple Macbook? (check out some of Louis Rossman's videos if you want more info) 2. You mentioned this camrea is good for content creation. And im sure you'll dig into this as you explore what the camrea can do, but im curious how it will work for more "basic" functions like a Streamer/PC video camera to record content directly to the PC, what issues it may have or how it may make it easier? Like, does it have a USB (usb-c i hope) connection so you dont have to use an HDMI capture, allowing it to act like a USB webcam? If so how much does that limit its functionality and features? Can it run off AC power, thus not requiring a battery, or 'battery-ac adapter'? Thanks
Im really sick of cameras which always crop, especially at 4k60. even 3000$ cameras, like Sony. It's almost impossible to get a 4k60 without a crop and a full frame sensor below 4000$
@@urag3hard GH5 changed the entire market for consumer video, first real consumer camera to have proper 422 10bit 4k video. Since then had the GH6 which does 6k60p with no cropping or overheating. On full frame a few of the cameras like S1H & BS1H are netflix approved and now S5II and S5IIX have come out and are offering amazing value! Deffo check them out
@@TenaciousLeeTV And even cheaper used. Can be found for about £250 (probably 300-325 USD) if you're patient. And MFT lenses are cheap and plentiful, especially compared to most full-frame equivalents.

2nd comment yaaaay!!! Love your vidz Harris. Been watching you a couple years now.
And if Panasonic just happened to have an extra one lying around that they REALLY want to give me... :D
I wonder if Harris is trying to get 69,696 subs and 420 videos at the same time 🤔
I was done when I heard $2,000 dollar camera.
@@NintyPrime thank you for the helpful advice! I really appreciate it.
@@NintyPrime Completely agree! Audio is more important than video. 1000's of TikTokr's with millions of followers + MKBHD on his channel AutoFocus uses just a phone.
Bonkars!
bro your 20min from my house thats scarry lol
Open gate? Did you say 6K open gate?
"The Itis" in 6K hahahaha 😂 sorry I'm 11 years old in maturity 🤣
A7iv is perfect hybrid camera
Watching $2000 camera video knowing that all I can aford right now is my $100 sony a5000 with kit lens, hacked for clean hdmi for top down streaming 😂
6k open gate
6k open gate
6k open gate
😂😂😂
Black spot ⚫️
6K30p 4:2:0 10-Bit Video Recording
C4K/4K60p 4:2:2 10-Bit Unlimited
This is a big miss on their part. 4:4:4 or bust
(check out some of Louis Rossman's videos if you want more info)
Panasonic always seem to have so much amazing features. BUT, micro 4/3rds always makes me SOOOOO hesitant.
The S5II and all Lumix S series cameras for that matter are full frame 👏👏
@@FuzeDzn wow, shows that I haven’t paid attention to Panasonic in quiet some time lol 😂 last I had seen was the GH5.
Deffo check them out
I feel that recommending a $2k+ camera body for streaming.. is pretty amusing. I wonder how many of your viewers will have had payouts like that.
When our Bro speak Japanese i just forgot to blink😄🥶
Most people that are not big in terms of there channel size won't able to afford that about of money on a cam.. DAmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Lumix G7 holds up great. You can find them for 500-600 new. Fantastic little camera, as anyone will tell you.
@@TenaciousLeeTV And even cheaper used. Can be found for about £250 (probably 300-325 USD) if you're patient. And MFT lenses are cheap and plentiful, especially compared to most full-frame equivalents.
😊 I love it here, teach me more plz
As always 👍
Please, Panasonic, fix your AF. And MAKE FASTER PRIMES!
Thanks for the commercial. You can't call it a balanced review anymore.
