Does 'Modern' Resident Evil Still Have the RE Formula?

  • The 'modern' Resident Evil games are infamous for their focus on action compared to the fixed camera games, and for how different they are as over the shoulder games. But upon closer inspection, most of them still retain the fundamental Resi formula, not just with 7 and RE2 remake, but with 4 and Revelations 2 as well.

    I like to think of Resident Evil 6 as a progression of acknowledging the existence of zombies and other BOWs.
    At some point you arent trying to survive your trying to get as many things dead as possible to do your mission.

    Revelations 2 is so good and has a really good balance if old and new RE elements. Especially the ending is all I, as a RE fan, could wish for.
    And the partner characters are good for coop partners who don't have much action game experience, I found this really nice!
    Yet many hate it because it's not a AAA title, episodic and "Claire is ugly" ... :(

      Love your RE and Sonic videos, keep it up.
      Just a possible hint for RE analysis, I think exploration should be divided into 2 categories: the searching aspect and linearity of level design. I think the RE3 remake really puts the second parameter into perspective.
      Maybe atmosphere should be included as a new topic, but it can get kind of subjective, so I'm not sure about this one.

    Can I just say Resident Evil 4 is just amazing, I had the Wii version when I was 12 and I played it a lot and beat it multiple times, I remember the Chainsaw guy and Regerators made me jump. Leon is so cute, badass, and sexy in this game and I love the cheesy lines he says like "where's everyone going? bingo?" and "no thanks, bro". I love Leon's voice, Paul Mercier did a great job voicing Leon and the Merchant. I love roundhouse kicking ganados in the face and picking up herbs and ammo. Ashley was a little annoying but she isn't that bad as the internet makes her out to be though I find it stupid that she can't climb down ladders. The bosses were also great with El Gigante and Krauser being my favorites, I found it pretty hilarious that Krauser can be beaten with only a knife. The graphics amazing for a 2005 GameCube game.

    Advice for RE5 here. Use a machine gun as your base weapon and give your AI partner a handgun and magnum. MG ammo is not as plentiful as handgun ammo, but it's not an issue if you can ration it out, especially since MGs can carry more ammo. With the AI partner, handgun ammo is everywhere and spawns from enemy loot regularly, so they almost never run low. Only have them switch to the magnum when a boss has their weak spot exposed. And you can exchange weapons with your partner, just not if it's the same one, why ask for a Hydra when you already have it.

    • @cookieface80
      @cookieface80 4 года назад +4

      No you keep the handgun and give them the machine gun, if the ai has a pistol they won't use other weapons as long as they have handgun ammo.

      @johnm.8414 4 года назад

      @@damiangallo4185 I usually keep weapons with rarer ammo and let the AI partner use the handgun since ammo loot drops for it are so common. But I have heard of giving your AI partner the sniper because of their accuracy with it, but I'm usually fine with my strategy since it puts the excess pistol ammo to use. I'll probably try giving Sheva the sniper next time if I ever revisit the game.

    • @damiangallo4185
      @damiangallo4185 4 года назад +3

      John M. But... besides the magnum(which you can buy ammunition for), ammo is never “rare” the game will always drop you the ammo of the weapons you are carrying, you will still get handgun ammo though, but I just played today with only a handgun and I gave sheva only the rifle and 7 fas, the game kept giving me more rifle ammo than handgun actually

But i have to say the scores for 7 were way too low , i don't think a few linear sections that were more so meant to set the mood and stuff ruin the experience that much , and most of them are executed well , like the salt mines imo as much as i hate how short and straight forward it is i still think it has some good action with well thought out enemy placement , and also while the combat is not that amazing which i agree with you on , i think 2 is still a bit low for it , 3 or 3 and a half is a bit more appropriate imo

    That was a good video. I think it should be called the survival horror formula. The whole Exploration value, Combat and Octane, Inventory Item management, and Decision making. I have a few survival horror games you should apply that to and compare with RE. Dead Space series, Silent Hill series, Outlast 1&2, and Alien Isolation. Another one I'd suggest is underrated. It's the first Quasi Survival horror game that did the over the shoulder Camera before RE4. It's the not Canon Sequel to John Carpenter's The Thing. It's called The Thing from 2003. I'll let you decided which one you want to do or if you want to do any of them.

      I believe Ruby was correct by not adding scare factor as a metric.
      That kind of thing is very subjective, expecially so if we consider that exposure to scary games can leave some of us more desensitized to them.
      I'm in the same boat as you, the older games used to scare me more, but today? Not even RE7 left me very scared. It reminded me a lot of Outlast, and some of the scares felt kind of familiar to me.

    For me "Resident Evil" has always been a zombie game. It started out with a virus outbreak in a small midwestern town called "Raccoon City" where citizens were dying from it and coming back as zombies. An investigation team from the RPD (S.T.A.R.S) was sent in and discovered that a pharmaceutical corporation called "Umbrella" was responsible. The story continued on until part 3 when Raccoon city was nuked and Umbrella corporation fell into financial ruin. End of a great zombie game series, and amazing story telling. In my opinion all of the games after that were not _really_ a continuation of the story and should have been stand alone games. "Leon's big adventure" or more appropriately "Curse of the Mennonites" was great and fun to play, but it didn't deserve the Resident Evil title; nor did any of the rest of them... especially 7.
    The "re-imagining" (not remake) of RE2 and 3 merely touched on the foundation of the original games and as a result were wildly successful. A large part of that is because fans of the original games petitioned and begged for remakes of 2 and 3 ever since the remastering of RE1 back in 2002. What we ended up getting was far from a remake or remaster, but it certainly showed that Capcom was not moving in the right direction after the original RE3 (as far as RE fans were concerned). I think the initial sells of "RE4" was due to the six year gap between RE3 and not because it was a new bold direction. Everyone was just tired of waiting for it and bought it simply because it was titled "RE4." Its a good thing it turned out to be a fun game, but I think it would have sold almost as many copies even if it sucked.

    No, they gave up on trying to have any sort of a cohesive plot to this series. They also for no reason at all destroyed some of the set in stone cannon plot points that could have been used to add plot links to the early days and could have turned into a hood storyline. For example re3 nemisis has multiple ending based on the choices of 2 live selections if you push nemesis off or you jump off the bridge. If you jump off you can either shoot Nikolai down or have a little heart 2 heart over the radio. Everybody always lost there minds 2 Barry picking you up at the end of the game if you jump off. Little known tho is that the dumpster fire that was gun survivor, if you chose the theater path you get to read a file which is probably the only interesting part of the game but you read everyone's favorite Russians report on raccoon city which was written after the nukes it. The opening of zero also sets in stone that hun survivor was cannon. So all these years later during a game you here I'm quite impressed you've stayed alive till this long girl, no one would have ever thought oh yea the villain in cloak off in the shadows who could it be? It's the Ted Bundy's of umbrella supervisors up to his old shenanigans. Instead of that when you delegate a remake of that old game off, well let's have ya shoot him in the head to be the only way yo end the game, and if ya dont take the shot you get 2 quick shots and a game over. When they dud REMake shinji Mikamis golden rule was if you add something to the game, it has to positively add to the experience, stuff like lisa trevor or the graveyards. Well hey fallout had a cool ending if you had bad karma, let's rewrite cannon history for a second of shock value.

      It's a shame he didn't enjoy the game. Personally, I liked the game a whole lot. Do I think it's the best RE game, hell no. Is it the worst game, I don't think so. RE6 was my first RE game and it led me to play the other games. It's definitely strayed from the first game's focus, but it does contribute to the lore quite a bit imo.
      Edit:
      I don't hate any of the RE games, Resident Evil is a great franchise and the variety between games was interesting to say the least.

    Great video! I agree with your points on RE4 and RE7. RE4 didn't remove what was in the originals, but instead reorganized them into something fresh. RE7 disappointed me immensely. The linear moments and slow movement hurt the experience. OG RE2 was more linear than RE1 but made up for it with the zapping system and atmosphere. RE7 had more "in your face horror" than its predecessors.

    in short no, even missing things like fixed perspective means a lot of hings get lost that can't be done the same as that style, not a matter of liking those changes but a style lost because of that won't come back, sure others will pick it up but RE not having its core design still is a stab in the gut

      - the moment they over focus on multiplayer kills the point
      - the moment it became action horror killed the point
      - the moment they don't go back to fixed perspective they lose things only really gained in that style
      the problem is losing its style - even if one likes the result it doesn't capture that style cause it simply isn't, its apparent they should make a new ip and cut the fat of the branding that isn't helping anymore, ironic as that would be given the engine name

    re6 had the potential to be a really good game story wise and character development wise...but it didn't know what it wanted to be.
    IMO they should have focused on Chris' campaign and maybe Leon's (since he's a main character and we get the other half of the story with his missions) but Sherry and Jake seemed unneeded and poorly executed. i went into re6 with an open mind and i enjoyed playing Chris' campaign but through most of the game i was just waiting for a "down moment" when i could just sit back and explore and take everything in and not rush it, but the constant fighting and action just more or less annoyed me by an hour into the game. Yeah I don't mind action here and there, but just not constant. I like to breath and enjoy lol.
    I'm more of a story person than an action and pretty graphics person. to me, the story will make up for those other two. I liked Chris' exploration into his character and seeing how much this life has taken a toll on him emotionally. Leon's story was kinda...meh? i didn't like the story's full focus on Ada and I just disliked Helena all together. I don't mind Ada but she isn't my top five fav characters and to have a game focused on her kinda turned me off. But that didn't mean I didn't like the ideas they were working with. I thought it was cool how they went with the cloning route and Carla was a cool villain but they set her up and take her down in one story, wish I could have seen her in at lest another installment to flush out the story more.
    my other issue was the new characters. Piers made sense with Chris' story because the way i saw him was like what Chris USED to be like--the guy that just wants to help people and save the world and the whole good soldier. he was symbolically Chris' past self he needed to reconnect with. Jake...idk how I feel about his character. this once again goes back to my other opinion on how the game should have been flushed out more and slower maybe over two installments. they could have hinted to Wesker being his dad but have Jake still unaware. then maybe for installment two have him and Chris be forced to team up and their differences be the center for that game.Helena i just didn't care for. Sherry was an unexpected add in and leads up to my next thought. Capcom is great at making characters...but awful at reusing them. They made re5 about Chris finding Jill but then nothing is talked about after. instead of giving Leon a new character what about adding in Claire? or someone else that's already established maybe Jill? why do we always need new characters when we have lots of characters already existing? this became a longer rant then i thought so i'll cut it short. re6 is a decent action game with bad controls, but not a good resident evil game. it could have been if it was flushed out differently and the story was reworked with more focus on the main characters and their evolution inside this universe.

    So true what you said in this video about the resident evil franchise. Did you know resident evil is actually a Action&Adventure/Puzzle+Plaformer and Shooter game base on it's function and structure design? from the classic resident evil game it's gameplay structure design function like a platformer style and modern resident evil games going from resident evil 4-6 and 2019 resident evil game call resident evil 2 remake are shooter games.
    Which is nothing wrong with resident evil begin a Action&Adventure/Puzzle+Plaformer/Shooter game, i enjoy mostly all resident evil games including resident evil 6 because i understand what resident evil gameplay design is.
    Did you know the resident evil series isn't actually a true survival horror game it goes under the guise as a survival horror game? so many people have the wrong impression about resident evil. yeah sure resident evil has horror element and horror theme but is that all it takes to make a survival horror game? A well put answer. I agree a survival horror game would cause someone to be in a horrific circumstance where they can overcoming a sticky situation or overcoming difficult challenges, a struggle for survival.

    When I was eleven years old I saw the movie "Night of the living dead" when it was in theaters back in 1968 (yes I'm an old man). That movie had a profound effect on me at that age. I pissed the bed for a few nights after seeing it, and I never watched it again until 1996 after I played Resident Evil on the PS1. That Resident Evil game brought back that feeling of horror and fear that I experienced way back then (although it didn't cause me to piss the bed) and I haven't found any other survival horror game that has done the same for me. So when Capcom decided to take away the zombies, it was no longer "Resident Evil" for me. My point is, the foundation of any good story or tale is what makes the formula for its success. Its not so much the view perspective, inventory layout, combat mechanics or weapons. You can't take away the foundation of a story, replace it with something non related, throw in modern add-on's, and then call it the same thing only new and improved. Anyway, just my opinion and for what its worth. Nice video by the way. I subbed.

The best course of action is to dash toward the J'avo and press aim, it will make the character slide, knock the J'avo out with an opening for a clean kill, ranged attacks might cause mutation.
    Regarding exploration, there are a lot of nooks and crannies with ammunitions and herbs, finding them is a must while playing on professional due to the severe lack of those provisions.

    Despite RE6 having a terrible campaign, the mercenaries mode is worth the price of the game. That being $20. Don't get me wrong, a game should have a fun campaign and RE6 was a complete mess. It basically doesn't tell you half of the mechanics because it wants to show you an explosion. But the combat is fanastic, but a little jank. If capcom made another 3rd person shooter game with RE6's combat but more polished and a fun campaign, then it might be one of capcom's best games. It has so much potential, but it has no room to spread its wings in RE6. Or at least it has no campaign level design to emphasis the combat complexity

  • @xRocketzFighterx

    To me Resident Evil has always been more of an action series with an engaging story but bad writing and good corny jokes. Each game is designed to where the player is always loaded with powerful weapons or can abuse powerful melee attacks in some games. (tho code veronica's knife feels more like a oversight more than intentional).
    You should do some of the side games/spin off games, as much as I seriously love the classics and the modern games, Especially RE6 and Revelatons 2 (yeah i'm one of those assholes who loves RE6)... The best RE game for me has always been Outbreak.
    Back in the ps2 days Outbreak, along with my JRPGs, GTA. Has always given me tons of replay value also since 2015 I've joined the online community and good god it runs so well. I love how teamwork is handled in outbreak where one person or the team splits up to tackle various objectives or one player is tasked with gathering up supplies for the team to prepare for some of the tough fights later in the game. Also each difficulty affects how each stage is accessible with it's rooms, events, item locations and all that.
    Also for a PS2 game made in 2003 to 2004 it still looks lovely, It looks like RE1make but with full 3D graphics but sadly sacrificing those sexy polygon curves and HD textures. It does go to show that you can have low graphics but still make them look high quality with well done textures.
