I do not know what seems to be so many people's problems. I have worn Levi's 501s for over 50 years. They fit me perfectly and the quality is as good as ever if not even better. I have taken the same size from the first pair (31" W X 32" Inseam).

Having worn Levis 501 jeans for over 40 years, I am convinced they are one of greatest products ever made in history. I believe the 501s made between 1993-1999 are the gold standard of jeans. But sadly, today's 501s are too loose so they don't look as good, don't fit as well, and the looseness causes the button fly to pop open. Even worse, Levis now uses inferior cotton that is not as soft, so they are not near as comfortable to wear. The denim is also thinner and doesn't fade with the same beauty. Luckily, I have enough US made vintage 501s, so I can wait for Levis to restore the fit and quality.
drwisdom1 yup Levi's pre 2002 were all made in the U.S.A. my dad has so many vintage Levi's all made in the USA. But Levi's in my opinion is still the best.
Luckily I do have 25 pairs in my closet for my personal wear. Most of them are made in USA. A few pairs are made in U.K. Canada, Mexico& Poland. The important thing they are the 1990's cutting.

Bought four pair of Levi 501 one wash tapered this year and the quality these days is poor! The eighties ones were superb. They just don't look to be finished off internally and had to cut all the loose bits of stitching myself in every pair.

Im confused. I want to buy a pair of the 501 shrink to fit and distress them myself but in every picture I see of someone wearing them the waist of the pants sits differently. On some it looks like a lower rise and on others they have them hiked all the way to their belly button. I would buy the slimmer fitting styles that are advertised to sit at the hip but I like the button fly. Im young so I really don't want them to look like dad pants if you know what I mean.
They're mid rise, so they are supposed to fit a little below your belly button. Of course, if you buy the wrong size they will fit lower on your waist since they're falling off. If you haven't worn anything like that, I highly recommend you try them, they seem much more comfortable than the low rise jeans you see everywhere these days
The smallest waist size Levi’s have for men are 28. If you’re going for a raw denim indigo/ridge wash(if there is any) then it’s going to always look like a Dad Jean unless your a big guy. There are options for a tapered 501, but none come in the ridge color. Women jeans can vary waist 24-32, but none are in classic 501 ridge color. Women jeans btw have no difference in look except in some because how/who it’s marketed for(plus sizes, curvy).
Got to buy levis vintage one expensive i got them but in fact a well shrunk ordinary pair self distressed makes no diference they are a rip off the vintage in a year when thin etc no diferenve except the wallet

I bought my first pair of brand new 501s in 1984 I also bought the redlines vintage 501s from American classics back then 501s changed in the 90s and in many ways fit improved. I stopped buying them in 2020 as the outer seams where so badly sewn they had crooked seams and I could not find a pair in that store that did not. It was a insult to the customer I bought a pair of made and crafted 501s and they smelled of bleach and they ripped so I got them refunded. Bought 3 pairs last year including the 93 and these have all been ok. I buy them sized up so they have a bit more room to move comfortably. I don’t know how many pairs I’ve had in my life but it’s a lot. Different colours vintage 1955 vintage 1947 501 ct 501 tapered 501 93. Shrunk to fits etc. if I buy blue always dark blue. Just for information James Dean wore LEE jeans. Brando wore Levi’s.
Can confirm with others that the 501's are nothing like they used to be. I have two pairs and sadly will never buy another pair again. the butt is too sloppy and the leg openings are too narrow. I thought the sloppy butt problem would be solved with a few washes but nope. they're just like that now.

I remember guys would say the 501s saved their butt a lot of discomfort when they got the paddle at school. Guess your dad believed you & your brother needed it bare butt!!

One of my friends also slipped his cigarette into his back pocket and sat down to crush it out. One of my favorite memories was the day that a guy got paddled for wearing leather Levi's at school. I still remember him laughing and saying, "I did not feel a thing". The sound of the paddle against the thick leather was also giving the guys a boner. LOL.

When quality deteriorates over a period you do not always realize it. Back in the 70s when jeans were worn tight, rather than have a matchbox bulge we put matches loose in the back pocket and it was easy to strike them on the denim. At parties, it was also quite common for people to use their jeans to stub cigarettes out. When we came across a grass fire, a guy also used an old pair of 501s to beat the flames out and they were still wearable. Imagine what would have happened to today's jeans. When we found an old pair of 901s at the bottom of a drawer, our daughter wore them at a party. Using them to strike matches caused great amusement and their was no shortage of guys wanting to use them to put their cigarettes out. Although they are nearly faded to white, all the cigarette stub marks just washed out afterwards..
You are right...you can find a good pair of 501s nowadays too, but there is also a lot of rubbish - cheap mass production with a high price. My other remark would be the design...they are still making 501s with very wide legs, which doesn't look good at all....I adore the upper part of 501s, but the legs are really shit and absolutely not trendy.
Sebastien P. Sounds like you need the slim cut of the 501s, the 514s I believe. I have thicker legs (I weight lift and have thick quads and calves) and so 501s fit me perfectly. I do wish theyd stop reducing the denim thickness. I think theyre down to like 9oz cotton. Way too thin imo.

I buy the vintage Levi’s 501 off eBay you can get them for 30 bucks or less and they’re made of thicker denim and fit much more better a true 501 fit
