When I came back from Afghanistan in 2010 that's when I discovered the tau and Warhammer 40K as well it's been so much fun I just wish there was a group to play with around in my area.
"table top simulator" could be an option. Effectively, it's the closest thing to the irl board game. You will have to find others via discord or something tho. I personally haven't tried it so I don't know how large of a community there is but it's better than nothing. There's also other video games on the subject as well Example of "table top simulator" 40k ruclips.net/video/Ql0Pi1pPaIk/видео.html
Thank you for your service. I just searched “game store” or “Warhammer store” in Google Maps and found several places within an hour drive of me (any further is a bit much). I live in middle-of-nowhere Texas, and I found a couple places I’m sure you can too. Hope this helps.
Theyre literally the only faction that offers you to join them as an option to "we just kill you lol"... which indeed basically makes them the only real "good guys" in the franchise
When I was getting into Warhammer 40k I didn’t know what army I wanted to play. But when I saw the video Nick did showing off all his T’au made me realize they were the army I wanted. He even got me to want kitbash my own stingwings so thanks Nick for getting me into the greater good!
Hell yeah! Don't let anyone discourage you with pointless Tau hate. The point of this hobby is the freedom to choose and play any faction you want for any reason you want. Play with people who make wargaming fun for you, and spread the Greater Good in the name of the Ethereals!
The bigest mistake that GW has made with the Tau in recent years is to try and give them some dark edge. They should be the good guys in a universe of darkness, a lone light monst shadowy opents at best.
Frankly even in there most noble bright versions, they’re only considered good guys compared to the rest of 40k, put them in any other Sci-fi setting they are still an expansionist empire with an manifest destiny attitude, they would be seen as a villainous faction.
The Tau are scary and amazing at the same time. It does not fit my way of fighting, but it is so damn cool. I cant wait to see them explode even more stuff!
Yeah I love the tau but I'm not gonna play them on the tabletop. Meele has a certain equity. I have to dance around your guns and threat ranges, then in combat the unexpected happens, sometimes the lowly gaurd roll hot and survive, sometimes the squigs devour custodians. Playing a bunch of big guns and deleting shit doesn't speak to me, but I do love the blue boys.
I remember I started collecting tau when I was in year 6 (uk) so about age 12. I got a firewarrior kit for my birthday and I was so proud of them that when I built a couple I took them to school in my book bag to show my friends and they got absolutely destroyed because I left them loose in my bag all day with my books, lunchbox etc. hard to think that was 15 years ago!
I love seeing two Fish People talking happily so much of their lore. Jokes aside, this is actually enjoyable to watch. As someone who’s recently got into 40k (last year), the T’au has always been my favorite faction and it was the faction that got me interested in 40k. So seeing this interaction or discussion is quite wholesome to watch.
@Play On Tabletop Found a glitch at 8:46 timestamp where the "Thank you for watching" end card shows up for a few seconds. Not a huge deal, just figured I'd let y'all know. Thought the video was over already for a moment. XD
I was unsure of which faction to start with when I joined the hobby a couple years ago. Their lore, mechs, and play style are just so much fun. Seeing Nick have a blast playing them and even killing an Imperial Knight with a wounded Farsight in melee sealed the deal for me. Now my army is steadily growing. From startung with a mere Pathfinder team to now building Stormsurge and a Coldstar/Enforcer tag team duo I'm now looking at the start of a great army to field while having a blast putting them all together. Thanks, Nick, for inspiring me to pick the Greater Good!
this was such an interestign video! I'd love more where the players discuss their armies, why they got into them, etc. I think esp when they go over different tactics over the course of the tau lifespan in the game was cool! Also just discussing lore bits and what they like/dislike was cool. Excited to see the video of these two playing (:

Can you guys tell me what books to read to learn about the things you talked about in this video. what novels and maybe what order i should read them in? I've never read any Warhammer novels at all, but i really want to learn about the Tau, and the Orks and hopefully the Dwarves soon too, but i just really wanna focus on the Tau for now.
I started 40k during 4th ED and the T'au in the display case of the store is what initially convinced me to go in and get started. Now over a decade later, watching Nick's T'au on Play On convinced me to pick up the hobby again. I'm working on painting up my old models and can't wait to watch the T'au vs T'au battle report. For the Greater Good!
I got into warhammer and tau about a year ago and although I’m not the best Pinter every time I see a battle report or showcase of tau on play on table top it inspires me to keep loving the blue boys
I joined around the start of 9th as a tau player and fell in love with the models, eventually I picked up chaos space marines, but tau are still my preferred. It would be so fun to just paint and hang out with Nick, he seems like such a nice and genuine guy.
I picked up T'au when they first came out. A friend told me they have suits like Gundam and i was sold. I have the Citadel Miniatures, Free Copy, that came out in 2001 wehen They came out. There rail guns was the main weapon i feel in love with and now its finally a weapon to be feared again.. if we hit :D
I feel like if anyone is engineering a race to be advanced and that can take on Chaos effectively it would be the Necrons, not the Eldar. Especially Illuminor Szeras, he'd be all over that!! It'd be great if you could do a deep dive on Daemons or Orks next. They'd be really fun. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed that video and learned some interesting new lore!

2:55 Great video, and love this section bringing context to the fish theme / names. Glad to find that they are from the Imperial's perspective, and that the Tau's perspective are the more logical; technical code names, which from this day forth, I shall now call them by - It's not a Devilfish! It's TY7! ... and I also learnt what an 'Ungulate' is - Large mammals with hooves :D
"The one constant in the universe is change, the wise adapt." I got the Tau when they first came out. I wasn't the first to get the army box, but I wasn't too far behind; even got a mention in canon for my role-playing in the Eye of Terror campaign as "a human traitor operating out of Sa'cea" in the 3rd edition Tau Empire codex. I've loved the army and the lore from day one. I'm really impressed by that collection on the table, and frankly a bit envious. Really good modelling and painting... and a great discussion of the lore to boot. Great episode. May you keep bringing the light of the Greater Good to the benighted galaxy beyond our spheres. (And keep frying all tellers of fish jokes.) PS: would Hunter cadres feast on Waygu beef?
Great question, is that too close to canibalism? :D Thank you for the compliments on my collection. If you want to see more shots, find them on more of my work on instagram @george.t.paints
I've just recently started getting into 40k, and the XV88 Broadside pretty much immediately spoke to me, and got me excited about playing some T'au. I've branched out into Necrons and Marines as well now, but the Greater Good will always be my home now.
Honestly first i didnt like Tau but after so many battle reports. nicks passion for tau and after this video i learnd so much about their lore. Now i think they are really cool.
I got into warhammer 1 month ago now, got given a Pathfinder box, and now i have a couple of different models and I love it. Battlesuits are so amazing.
- The aquatic names are probably rough translations of tau names. In the Fire Warrior novel, tau have an aquatic-sounding "dorsal" bomber and revere t'pel sharks and other creatures that lived in the landlocked seas of T'au. - Tau do have cir'etz scales on their spine, also from Fire Warrior. - One of the first planets destroyed by the Imperium during the first Damocles Crusade was a tau fishing colony, which spawned a sushi-eating meme on Advanced Tau Tactica back in 2005? - The idea that the tau are a product of a faction of Eldar is interesting, since in the FFG Deathwatch sourcebooks, one Necron studying reverse biotransference recognized "the work of the Old Ones' progeny" in the tau.
Yes! Finally, someone else says what I've always said. That the T'au are the order equivalent to the Tyranids. They both evolve and adapt at a ridiculous rate. And considering how often they've faced each other in the lore and how much their encounters have effected both sides, it makes more and more sense. I love it. I LOVE George's army. It's exactly what I'd build if I had the ability to make one, a whole army of battlesuits. Their sleek, sensibly designed tech IS the reason I became a fan of them in the first place. As Nick says, it looks efficient and competent. Like these things were made by an actual engineer instead of sanctified priests or ancient bone Mages or... Whatever the necrons do (though their aesthetics have their own appeal to me).
I hadn't played Warhammer in about 30 years, when my son's convinced me to get any army to play against them. When I started looking Tau caught my eye, then video's by Tau Nick sold me on them. So I'm watching videos while putting my army together. Thanks for the dive into Tau in this video. I'd like you guys to dive into Adeptus Mechanicus.
Great video Nick! As always your enthusiasm is contagious and really pumps me up to finish painting my army! I would love to have a Faction focus on Grey Knights, the lore is just too good!
Tau is my least favorite army in 40k (all about necrons baby) but I will never disparage you for liking them Nick, and I do still enjoy hearing you and other Tau enthusiasts share your love of them. It's entertaining watching you gush about the goat-fish (yes the fish thing is just to tease you at this point)
Great video, and that is a gorgeous looking army, the Tau always feel at home in some desert dust. As a kid I had just started to collect Space Marines (the boys in blue) but very soon after I got that issue of White Dwarf with the Tau release, and my fate was sealed.
I AM PLAYING FOR THE TAU FOR THE FIFTH YEAR ALREADY and I LOVE THEM TOOOO MY BROTHERS SHAS´O S, MY TAU ARE MY LOVE. None can stand before the GREATER GOOD!!!
I've been researching Warhammer, and some other wargaming tabletops to find something cool to get into. I love me some mechs, so I was also looking for that. I think the T'au is just what I was looking for. It's just a bonus that I also dig the fact that the fight "for the greater good" in the nightmare that is the world of 40k. Thanks for the video.
A week or so ago I bought the Tau Combat Patrol and the Kill Team Pathfinders boxes. (I have friends who play both) and this video has me even more psyched up to finish building and paint this awesome army! Lore wise what would be the best books to read? I recently picked up Farsight Crisis of Faith by Phil Kelly and I'd love some other books for after I finish it.
This was great. would love to see a faction focus on the Drukhari. They are my favorite army. Versatile kits, great looking figures, consistent range only marred by the lack of availability of certain units, especially the covens stuff. And a great, evocative, veeeeeery grimdark lore.
Faction focus Chaos knights I think that most people think that chaos knights are just a stat line army but I feel that people should know more about the chaos knights in particular. Because the reason some of them became chaos was that they were defending the imperium and they went mad from defending them
@@DMKleinArts The only thing I found about it was "[...] The Regent Ahhotekh is now well aware that others have marked his dynasty’s awakening, though he is far from certain which of the numerous species plaguing the galaxy knows anything of substance. He sees the hand of the Eldar all about, though he was much gratifi ed to discover that these erstwhile scions of the Old Ones are but a guttering remnant of their former glory. The presence of the Orks was of little surprise, for ever have their kind infested the universe. Of the Tyranids the Necrons knew little, but recognised them for the foe that had decimated the Charnovokh Dynasty. In the Tau, the regent saw traces of the work not of the Old Ones, but others of their progeny, determining that a more detailed examination would be necessary to ascertain their true heritage." Is from the Deathwatch RPG book. Some say that the Tau were Necrontyr pre-space cancer, retro-engineered by the Old Ones as a peace offer, but they were overwhelmed before any peace deal could have been made... But this is just speculation.
I started Tau at the end of Eighth edition so idk about the history of the tau on the tabletop but I chose tau because the aesthetic of the infantry and the battle suits, plus as a sifi nerd I’ve always loved the concept of front line infantry mechs.
I'd like to see all 4 chaos gods worth of armies on the table at once and talk about how each works and how they can work together etc. I don't know much about most factions, but chaos is one of the most interesting to me because it's like 4 factions + a 5th merged faction of any number of the 4 and that is really cool imo.
I'll be honest, I've heard about WH40K when I was about 10, was told too expensive and didn't get into it (mind you that was 24 years ago) Back in 2014, I worked at a call center where many of my colleagues were just painting wh40k figurines all day. Got into it too, it didnt take me long to have a huge HUGE crush on Necrons. reanimating dead units *chefs kiss* and the lore. was very scarce but as time moved on novellas etc. still one of my favorite armies... THAT SAID. lately found some 3d models (proxy) for tau that made me look into them. and boy of boy, kinda my new favorites. started listening to farsight audiobook. and like. Now i need a Tau army 100% Necrons are cool. Tau is where its at. :D I share the entousiastic feel about them now.
I have just been getting into 40K and I have been really interested in the Tau so much I decided to make them my main army. Tau remind me of the covenant from Halo and the Council races from Mass Effect.
I like the idea that the ethereals are the last remnants of what's left of the old ones. The orks and eldar failed and so they've put their hopes in a new race. As for which faction to cover next: I really like Grey Knights. They were my first army and so hold a place in my heart and they're good in every stage on the tabletop. I wish I could showcase mine on your channel, but travelling from England to Canada is expensive.
My theory is that the Tau were a plot by an Old One, one of the lone survivors of the War in Heaven. The Old One looked for a race that could unite the galaxy, and that wasn't susceptible to the Warp. The Tau fit that criteria, so the Old One intervened to save them from extermination. Then uplifted select members of the Tau race, turning them into the first Ethereals, instilling them with a philosophy of galactic unity.
I was so young when i discovered 40k, it was because of Dawn of War 1, I was playing warcraft 3 during that time, but i wanted to try a sci-fi version of that and didnt want to play starcraft (starcraft 2 didnt exist yet).. and after trying every races available, i was so confused about the lore and races. I ended up really liking how the Tau looked. They had giant robots and small robots (i thought they were robot back then) and mixed up with different races like the kroots and the great knarloc.. so basically i fell in love with all the diversity there was in just one race
I remember when GW Stores had a campaign that Tau players could show up and play and if they won GW noted it; by the end of it we Tau players had won so many games during the campaign that GW released a bunch of new models ahead of schedule because each win helped towards the release of new models. I showed up with my heavily droned army, painted everything I saw with targets, blasted them out of oblivion, Crisis Suits filled the gaps quickly and most of all the Tau HELD THE LINE. I wish GW would do more of these types of campaigns, it really felt like as a player that we could affect real change in our favorite army by simply playing and winning games :P
I like to think that the Imperium uses what they think are mythical animals for many of their naming conventions. None of these animals have existed for thousands of years and evidence of them is probably so scant that they're near-mythical and thought of as such to the Imperium scribes recording encounters with alien tech, thus they get a nickname that's grouped together with others of that race.
was encouraged to buy dawn of war by some friends and while waiting for them to get online found the tau in the army painter, instantly drawn in by the Fire Warriors, XV-25 unit's and the tactical drones.
George's army DOES have an awesome color scheme. And as an ork player I have to say that it has some lovely conversions too. "Someday I hopes ta krump dis army real good." ~Gobstoppa da Evalastin'
In the second Last chancers book, Killteam, by Gav Thorpe, you get a detailed explenation to what Tau eat due to the killteam meeting envoys and sit down to dinner with them on a Tau planet, a good read
I would love to see more of the Salamanders. Think they've only been on the channel once? I love the idea of them leaving the battlefield in ashes, so cool.
That concept art actually looks like it could fit in the grim darkness of the far future. My biggest turnoff for these guys is how clean and Gundam-y they look amongst all these Gothic and Roman and Mad Max aesthetics...
gotta love that the level of warp corruption that could inflict horrific mutations on humans or turn them into chaos spawn just turns Tau equally as racist as the average imperial citizen lol
I'm late to this comment party, but I must say that it brings such a massive smile to my face to see some of my terrain designs in your video! Thank you
@@PlayOnTabletop the circular tower with the drone holders (remora siting on), large curved wall of the landing pad (orca sitting on), the tower in the middle that has been scaled up ridiculously 😄(barracuda sitting on), and some small foot details on the cone structure in the back. Such clever ways of combining a couple of the designs.
I got introduced to the Tau thanks to the UA mod for Dawn of war soulstorm. I hope to soon be ablt to paint and assemble Commander Shadowsun and my pathfinder I bought months ago on reddit.
My personal head cannon for the Tau is they are survivors from back when the necrons were flesh and blood, they evaded the whole being turned into robots bit and devolved (as at the time the galaxy was a bit radioactive), as the universe has become more conducive to life the Tau have grown until they reached a point when some of the original necrons have woken up from cryo sleep, knowing what happened to the necrons and the war in heven they have decided that their society needs to be built for the greater good and not in the dynasty style they came from. I have never been a huge fan of them being an eldar thing, as the eldar don't seem to want to be friends with them at all. if the eldar realize that they are somehow connected with the necrons this would explain why they are very cautious of them and making any form of alliance/non aggression pact love to hear everyone else's thoughts though :) also they do sort of look similar to the necrons, especially in some of the Necrontyr fan art
Honestly I think one of my new favorite things is that one of the client races of the Tau is a League of Votann that traded them ion Weaponry. That probably took centuries for the trade deals to be even drafted because oh boy, the Kin do not exactly do things quickly.

Thanks Shaderunner! I'm on instagram if you want to see more close ups of the models in my collection, @george.t.paints
You can thank Phill Kelly for everyone thinking etherals are mustache twirling villains
Ungrateful Tao
saved by a warp entity
Tau:”and I took that personally”
Great video Nick! As always your enthusiasm is contagious and really pumps me up to finish painting my army! I would love to have a Faction focus on Grey Knights, the lore is just too good!
""frozen fish..."
YOU MADE THIS JOKE NICK
YOU DID THIS TO YOURSELF
I just started War Hammer 40k, and was choosing my army and I thought the T'au would be a good army an when I saw Nick play it sealed the deal.
I had such a similar start! Boys in red though for me :).
I AM PLAYING FOR THE TAU FOR THE FIFTH YEAR ALREADY and I LOVE THEM TOOOO MY BROTHERS SHAS´O S, MY TAU ARE MY LOVE. None can stand before the GREATER GOOD!!!
Please make a video explaining how to use the tidewall rampart system
cant wait to play tau it will be my first 40k army
Welcome to the greater good!
Welcome to the greater good! Definitely give pathfinder a read, one of the first long form tau stories written.
Finally, someone that has the old crisis suits! Like me!
This was great. would love to see a faction focus on the Drukhari. They are my favorite army. Versatile kits, great looking figures, consistent range only marred by the lack of availability of certain units, especially the covens stuff. And a great, evocative, veeeeeery grimdark lore.
Play on is now part of the pilgrimage? Shit i gotta get me a plane ticket... Another Tau player here Nick!
Ohhh, now the fish joke will never die
Mechs and Railguns... Sold. You got another Tau player here
This is sweet I can't wait to see what you will have in store for us in the spring.
Faction focus Chaos knights I think that most people think that chaos knights are just a stat line army but I feel that people should know more about the chaos knights in particular. Because the reason some of them became chaos was that they were defending the imperium and they went mad from defending them
I like the lore of the Tau. Especially the part where to Silent King is going to use them to give the necrons their living bodies back.
Where is that mentioned? That's interesting and foreboding
Funny. As I understand it the new hope for reversing Biotransferrance is actually the Psychic Blanks. Hence the Pariah Nexus.
Eh I've never seen that mentioned.
But this is just speculation.
the silent king is not going to do anything
Thanks for this great vid, i love the Tau and this army looks amazing! Play ON!
I may prefer Necron's as a race, but Commander farsight is probably my favorite character.
I started Tau at the end of Eighth edition so idk about the history of the tau on the tabletop but I chose tau because the aesthetic of the infantry and the battle suits, plus as a sifi nerd I’ve always loved the concept of front line infantry mechs.
I'd love to see a necron faction focus video! Their lore is so interesting and got a big update for 9th edition
My tau army have been sitting in a box half primed in my closet since 05. Ive been wanting to finish them but other armies have gotten in the way.
Box of potential, waiting patiently for your return!
"Cetaceans such as whales, dolphins, and porpoises are also classified as even-toed ungulates"
Water Caste at least as Land Dolphins.
Well played! Still not fish!
I guess we'd all love to see you cover the adepta sororitas with their awesome models!
Great video :) this is what the hobby is more for me, collecting and painting
Hello, I really like to see a lore and army breakdown of the Grey Knights.
I have just been getting into 40K and I have been really interested in the Tau so much I decided to make them my main army. Tau remind me of the covenant from Halo and the Council races from Mass Effect.
My favorite time for Tau was 5th edition with 4 devilfish running Fish of Fury and spamming Crisis Suits with FSE
We didnt even mention Fish of Fury, wow that was the way for tau in 5th
@@thompvancity Fish of Fury was beloved and hated by all sides....but I miss those days
Sgt. Nicholas Angel: 'How can this be for the Greater Good?'
NWA: 'The Greater Good...'
Ooo, I like this theory!
T'au is my main army and I totally agreed with Nick on it being the best army in 40K :)
We might be biased, but I agree completely!
I haven’t played 40k in a long time but the T’au was my army. I have no idea where they are but I miss painting and playing
7:25 laughs in superior range
Can’t wait for that Battle report!!
Its live now, what did you think?
was encouraged to buy dawn of war by some friends and while waiting for them to get online found the tau in the army painter, instantly drawn in by the Fire Warriors, XV-25 unit's and the tactical drones.
Yes Tau!
I love these guys!
George's army DOES have an awesome color scheme. And as an ork player I have to say that it has some lovely conversions too.
"Someday I hopes ta krump dis army real good." ~Gobstoppa da Evalastin'
Bring on the krumpin' ya git! Thanks for the compliments @B_C. I'm happy to share my paint recipe if you're interested.
We tau players finally time in the sun.
That’s a nice aquarium
@4:01 That's exactly what fish would say trying to deny being fish 🐟🐟
i started tau in 5th and man etherals were so bad at that time
That concept art actually looks like it could fit in the grim darkness of the far future. My biggest turnoff for these guys is how clean and Gundam-y they look amongst all these Gothic and Roman and Mad Max aesthetics...
Nick, your child is adorable (assuming that was indeed your child)
I'm just gluing together my first Ghostkeel from the CP box. My first ever WH40k army 🙂
gotta love that the level of warp corruption that could inflict horrific mutations on humans or turn them into chaos spawn just turns Tau equally as racist as the average imperial citizen lol
I'm late to this comment party, but I must say that it brings such a massive smile to my face to see some of my terrain designs in your video! Thank you
Which ones?
I have never been a huge fan of them being an eldar thing, as the eldar don't seem to want to be friends with them at all. if the eldar realize that they are somehow connected with the necrons this would explain why they are very cautious of them and making any form of alliance/non aggression pact
love to hear everyone else's thoughts though :)
also they do sort of look similar to the necrons, especially in some of the Necrontyr fan art
I can get behind this take. Nice setup!
Honestly I think one of my new favorite things is that one of the client races of the Tau is a League of Votann that traded them ion Weaponry. That probably took centuries for the trade deals to be even drafted because oh boy, the Kin do not exactly do things quickly.
