    Almost six years late but this was definitely worth seeking out, took a while and I've been searching. Excellent tips and the 40 mins is just right. It's quite hard to find long form videos that go into a good amount of detail. Thanks 👍
    I can't remember what my first childhood kit was, but my first kit returning to the hobby was a P51-D, immediately followed by this kit - neither looked this good, of course 😅😬

      @@jamfjord Thanks m8! I’m so glad you found this video and it was useful to you. Long form videos are rare because they take so long to make and if they flop it takes me awhile to get motivated to do another. Anyway thanks for watching!🙌🏻🍻

    Looks absolutly amazing I recon I had to watch as I have one plastic Spitfire that was gen to by my Daughter so I guess i have to get it right, and also a mate of mine has done hundreds of plastic aircraft But have since sold most of them I bought a DC3 and a Lancaster Bomber from him AND.....they look AMAZING so I'll have to take my time as this SPITFIRE will be my FIRST one. So I'll be a bit nervous doing it OH OH OH ..............

      Thanks, Graeme! Take your time and follow the proper steps and you'll be fine. Hey, and if you screw it up you can always strip the paint off and start again or just go buy another. This hobby is really quite cheap so messing a model up isn't the end of the world. Good luck with yours. Cheers.

    My first ever model was indeed a Spitfire MK Ia, in around 1989. I remember I only had three Humbrol enamel paint pots, gloss black, gloss green and a gloss brown... Yeah, she looked a beauty. She was stuck up on fishing wire with the rest of my (hundred or so) other models until about 1995 when my then bedroom was decorated and all the models were put into a big box for storage. But if I recall correctly, with the amount of gloss paint on her, even if she's now long since languishing in a land-fill somewhere, she'll still be all shiny.

    Nice job. Interesting to see the differences between this kit and the starter set - same plane, similar decals, but the instructions are way better on yours. On the starter set, there is no decal placement sheet, for example, making most of the decals redundant unless one researches elsewhere.

    Hi Scott
    Finally had a chance to look at this video. Been doing it in spurts as it seems that something is always drawing me away. Good thing RUclips keeps it at where you left off. Here are a few of my observations and comments
    1. Not too crazy about the cuts with the film/tv clips at the front end. The Spitfire fly-bys were perfect though.
    2. Your speed up sections were very appropriate as you are right, those would have been boring.
    3. I liked the use of your chisel. I have one of those and completely forgot I can use that tool in that manner.
    4. Your use of aluminum foil and the kit decal was great. I think I will try that method next time but in 1/48th I think I will use lead foil as it is a little thicker and probably look a bit better.
    5. Your replacement of the gun sight was a nice idea.
    6. I am surprised you can put together the whole cockpit and still be able to do the detail painting but seemed to work out okay. I’m not that brave.
    7. I see you are using the Tamiya extra thin a little differently than normal. I have never been able to apply it to one part and attach the other part. Maybe why you were having trouble with the rudder? If I had to do it that way I use the white cap Tamiya liquid glue. A lot more working time.
    8. Love your idea of the block of wood for a handle. Got to remember that.
    9. Your decaling method is also interesting. I was surprised that you get so many decals ready at one time. You are a brave man. I normally also use a tissue to wick away the water instead of using the hard surface like your mat. But having said that, doing it that way probably keeps it wet before use.
    10. Your use of the water colour pencils was great. Got to try that.
    11. The tea candle/super glue tip was an eye opener. Definitely have to try that.
    12. It must have been quite interesting building this model as well as videoing it. Based on the video angles it sure looks like the camera is right in front of you. If that is the case not sure I could do that. Be cool to see your set up.
    Looking forward to your future videos especially your U boat commander figure if you will be filming that.

    • @SmallSoldier
      @SmallSoldier  5 лет назад

      Nice, thanks for the feedback Chris. Lots of good points. My camera is just off to my left and does get in the way from time to time but works out pretty good. It’s certainly makes you change the way you build when your filming. The reason I add the parts at the front or end of my videos is for 2 reasons.
      1. I’m trying to be a little different than everyone else and like to throw some comedy in there as well.
      2. If I don’t tell the viewers to subscribe they forget. Just some tips I’ve learned from watching some of the bigger channels. Unfortunately you need to do a little hand holding to get people to act.
      Thanks for your comments they are always and true appreciated.👍🏼👍🏼🙂

I'll make a solid effort to bring it down on the next one. I really appreciate your honest opinion and value your comments. Thanks for watching!

      I had the same problem with the sound. I don't know if your software shows the noise level. If it does, normalize the background track(s) and tune the volume just a few decibels above sound level. Not big issue though - I could hear you word for word on my laptop.

      Yes the tea candle will keep your super glue from drying out. I've had it sit in there for days. The key is to clean it out occasionally and re-melt the wax from time to time to keep it fresh. 👍

      Scott…had a quick question about paint thinning for airbrushing after watching this video. I am struggling to get Vallejo model air paints to flow well with my H&S Evolution with a .2 new tech needle and nozzle. I use 30% thinner with 5% flow aid by volume as per Model Paint Solutions out of Seattle. Constant tip dry, almost immediately. Very frustrating :). Can you recommend a best practice, mix ratio etc. Any help appreciated. Cheers. Oh and spraying at 15-18 psi with this dilution.

    • @SmallSoldier
      @SmallSoldier  2 года назад +1

      @@ernestsalmon6931 I use roughly the same air pressure so your good there. As far as paint dilution goes it depends on what your using for paint. I mainly use lacquer based paints ie. Tamiya, Ak or Gunze thinned with Mr Leveing Thinner. My paint to thinner ratio is roughly 60-40 thinner to paint. I like to build the layers up in thin coats which gives me a smoother finish. For acrylics I like a 70-30 thinner to paint if using Vallejo paints. Again it’s all about a smooth coat and more thinner sprayed in lighter coats will give you that. You can thin some acrylics with MLT 400 and Vallejo paint is one of them. You’ll more than likely get a smoother coat using this thinner because of the retarder which is present in MLT. If you don’t like the smell then stick with the Vallejo thinner and continue adding the flow aid as well as paint retarder. The retarder will help with tip dry but this also depends where you live. If your in a dry climate use more retardant less if in a humid environment. Hope that helps. 🙂🍻

    • @ernestsalmon6931
      @ernestsalmon6931 2 года назад +1

      @@SmallSoldier Scott...Thanks for the clear and excellent advise. I will double down on the thinner :). I also use one drop of Liquitex Slow-Dri as you recommend. I do use MLT for the Mr. Surfacer Products and can give this a try with my Vallejo acrylics to see if it makes a difference.
      As others have commented here this is one of the best how to videos I think I have come across to date. Thanks for sharing :).
      Oh and if you hadn't guessed I am currently building this model. It will be a gift for a cousin in the U.K.

    may i ask about some build technique ? what is the final polish grit that you using to polish Fuselage, also does just sand and polish is enough to make the gap disapear?. BTW, thank you mention about wet sanding, i keep forgot about it, so i alway have issue with scratch when sanding

    • @SmallSoldier
      @SmallSoldier  4 года назад

      Well you can use several types of grits. I use 12000 grit for the final polish or a super fine polishing stick will work as well. There's several manufacturers that produce great sanding pads. 3M have some although i haven't been able to obtain any myself. Wet sanding is best as it helps remove the grit as you sand and your less likely to scratch the plastic. As far as making seams disappear I always have to do back to tidy up most seams or gaps. I found CA glue works well as a large gap filler but can be hard to sand out in some cases. Thanks for watching... Cheers!

    I just can't live with the HUGE panel lines on the new mould aircraft, they're just MASSIVE, so out of scale that the panels would have to be maybe 5-6mm apart on the real thing!!!!!!.
    There are even die cast models out there with smaller panel lines.

      I would do a test first as some thinners are hotter than others. If you do it make sure to use an artist quality odourless white spirit as they tend to be less aggressive towards paint but still do a test it's just safer that way. And you'll prevent much swearing afterwards. :)
