I’ve found that model building has helped me to develop a better patience. I’d rush through builds so fast in the early years( and the kits looked like I’d rushed them), but I’m a lot more... relaxed?... about proceeding to the next build step. ... so much so, that I have an old-moulding of the Airfix 1/72 Typhoon that I’ve been poking at, on-and-off, for over ten years( my part count is over 200 so far). The funny thing is that I bought the kit in order to try out a painting technique, which it isn’t ready for yet. I’ve since bought three other kits for the same experiment, and only one of them has actually seen the test application.
I'm seriously considering getting a Supermarine Spitfire Mk1A starter kit. I last did an Airfix kit when I was a boy. My father bought it for me, so I'm really looking forward to getting back into the hobby.
Well just cracked open an Airfix Hurricane 1/72. This is one of the best videos for those of us who want to build a good looking model with basic paints and brushes, and are not trying to achieve anything more than that. Thank you Model Minutes
I just bought this same kit yesterday - not built one for around 30 years,so this video was most welcome, just need to find the time now to begin and complete the build - thankyou.
I bought this exact kit from Aldi 2 days ago. Completed it in 1 evening, it was great fun. I’ve not had an airfix kit since I was a boy. I also added extra touches, smoke and gun port stains and added a cut guitar string for the wire. After watching this video I’ve now done a watered down black wash and wiped it. Looking good
Awesome! I've also built this one in a capture German paint scheme, applied battle damage and sprayed one using an airbrush - all videos available on my channel :D
Thanks for the heads up Steve; our local Aldi also has them at a bargain price. There is an extra part in the kit not mentioned in this video - on the clear sprue with the cockpit. I think it is an undercarriage light (?) Do you or Model Minutes know what colour should be painted beneath the light please to reflect through the Perspex - red or orange, perhaps? I think this is a wonderfully encouraging video. I have just retired aged 66 and this is the first kit I have bought since I was about twelve! Between the age of seven and twelve I probably made an Airfix kit every month! I also bought nearly every set of little 00 soldiers and painted them all in great detail. Thank you Model Minutes for posting this video - I shall try my best to introduce all your little extra tips and hints into my own lockdown project. Keep safe and well.
After 40+ years since making my last one as a kid I decided to give this a go. Not quite as professional a finish as this one but very pleased with the outcome. I am now hooked again. Thanks for the videos and tips
Thanks for the video. I'm returning to modelling with my 14 yr old and grateful for the tips. When I was modelling aircraft as a youngster, we didn't have all these fancy 'washes'. I used to rub charcoal into the joints and hold the aircraft vertical over a candle flame causing soot stains to lick up the exhausts and gun ports...Occasionally it went wrong and that became a 'crashed' aircraft! Also, heat up a small needle and push it into the wings or fuselage, in a line to create machine gun damage... Finally, rub a soft pencil around the seating area of the prop - makes it spin easily when blown!
Got this kit and a few extra paints as recommended by you, in the post. Will be my first build in 40 years. Motto is ‘slow and steady and watch the video again’
Finally finished the build, a few mishaps with some glue splashes, decals were a bit of a problem (my fault entirely) and maybe a little heavy on the wash. But as a first kit in a very long time, I’m pleased with how it’s turned out. Me109 starter kit next!
Loving the channel. I've spent most of the day watching you in between doing my 1/72 Messerschmitt 109. I made this last week. I too painted the red tape over the gun ports and attempted to show exhaust trails with a wash of greys and black. The little chap has his yellow Mae West and I gave him a red scarf. Mine is wheels down, so I used some silver for the suspension struts. I was mooching around my workshop hunting for a length of wire for the arial line, nope all too thick. Tried cotton with dope from my fly tying kit, nope too saggy. Your idea is bloody marvellous. Thanks, really good.
I’m getting my first model making set today, I’ve wanted one for a couple of years but several things have impacted this. Thanks for all your videos you’ve been a big help in deciding what to get and your videos have given me a lot of insight into what goes into an airfix model. Thank you so much :)
Just getting back into models. Not built an Airfix kit since I was a kid and that was a very looong time ago. Watching this has brought back so many memories from my childhood. After watching your video on this model, I think I'm going to buy and build this and maybe a Hurricane before I get stuck into the modern warfare stuff I've got on order. Wow. Love the way you have done this video and the "after" ideas to give it that used look. And the sprue idea. Blimey. Never thought of doing that. Awesome. Thank you. 👍👍👍
Thanks a lot - the tips are really useful. Every time I watch a video I learn something new. I am trying to build this kid. Unfortunately I am making a right pig's ear of it but next time I hope it will be better. I have found that to be a good modeller you need only 3 things: patience, take advice and practice.
Finished my first ever proper model yesterday.Mine was very challenging because I broke the pilots dashboard. Also lost the pilot and the yoke as well. Missed one of the parts in the propeller so it doesn't spin but after everything I still finished it.Its great that even if you break or lose something you can still build it.Also lost the decal sheet but to be honest it looks better without decals
Thanks for this tutorial, I was looking for exactly this example. Tip : The bruch strokes should all be in the same direction for a given coat on a given piece. This prevents the apparition of bubbles (watch from 9:07 ) and reduces brush strokes marks even more.
Thank you for your time and for the video. I am returning back to a childhood hobby of mine and things have changed slightly, but mainly the cost, it was much cheaper many years ago
Started this yesterday, took 3 hours to do the cockpit but I'm using more colours and primer on the surfaces, on the pilot I've used 4 colours, and details on the paint work around the cockpit, and I did have to open everything up from my new toolkit , so the build itself was probably 90 minutes after setup of everything Today or tomorrow I'll start the fuselage and propeller section This is my first model build so I thought I'd try everything I could to make it as good as I could following online videos, so thanks for this it's helped no end 😃
@@ModelMinutes I didn't realise the kit needed to be unpainted to stick together that explains why my Tamiya glue didn't work yesterday and I went to Revell cement which was more powerful, I'll remember to leave the mating faces plain from now on 🤣
This is a great step by step video! I haven’t built a kit for probably 20 years and I’m thinking of getting back into it. I think a Spitfire is a great kit to get started 🙂 I love the little added extras you did at the end 👍🏻 great job!

Thanks Phil! I'm glad you enjoyed my video and subscribed :D. I'm currently working on something slightly larger in my "lock down" - hope to get it done soon!
This is what I have been looking for. I have the same type of kit but a different plane. Thanks for the help. Although my kit is 40 years old so the paints and glue are long gone
Thanks for your video. I recently bought this kit myself to get into modelling again (after 35 years). 😉 Once i used Humbrol enamel paint, now i'm trying Revell Aquacolor. And i paint with a brush, ofcourse. 😀
Excellent tutorial Matt! This is a very good tutorial for the beginner and it takes away a lot of the mystery when first building a model. I have three airbrushes but I still very much enjoy brush painting an entire model. I brush painted a Games Workshop Sentinel with their paints and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing this and now I have to get my Airfix Spitfire together!
I built this kit last week but I didn’t even know about that decal varnish I guess I could buy some for it !! Thanks for the tips !! Also my kit had another white decal that would rap around the tail 🤔also I definitely didn’t think of melting the spruce to make the wire!!
Yea well I got a raf 100 year anniversary gift set for Christmas that came with the spitfire a sop with camel and a thyphoon so it may be different but same paint job
I just bought this 2 days ago and I’ve started making it today and it’s taken me 2 hours just to do the inside of the cockpit. Good video however I’ve learnt a couple of things I will be doing to mine
I'd be interested to see it if you still have it! This is the latest tooling for the spitfire from airfix though, so it goes together much better than the old one, if you've not had a go building it yet, i'd highly recommend it :)
Just finished building my spitfire Mk1a, I think I did too many layers of paint as I can‘t see the panel lines anymore, I did manage to weather the model pretty well though in my opinion considering I had no panel lines to work around, I tried to do the sprue melting for the wire at the back of the spitfire however it caught fire on my first try lol and then every time i pulled the other two pieces of sprue away from eachother they just ripped apparently without a smooth small wire in between, although of this, I’m still pretty proud of my first model :) Your tips came in so handy!
Nice build of R J Mitchell’s Spitfire. I intend to include the Spitfire I got today from Models for Heroes with the D-Day Operation Overlord Diorama I bought last week from a model fair. I’ve been back in the hobby since January after almost a fifty year break, I ruined more models hand painting back in the day and now mostly use an airbrush, although my hand painting is starting to improve (maybe).. Good video. Regards..
Good work, you got a great finish on that, love it. I don’t have an airbrush but at the end of the day I enjoy what I do . If it frustrates me I have to mothball the project. Mind you with RUclips there is loads of skills to learn for me and keep going. Thanks for the video, appreciate your openness to opinions.
Hi Keith! Thanks for watching - I'm glad you like my model - I actually used this one to do my "battle damage" video a bit later on (video is on my channel somewhere)
Model Minutes It’s really good. I’ve a handful of starter kits to get through. Even the Cutty Sark, but that apparently is fiddly. The one kit I want to do is the English Electric Lightning, so will have to practice a bit on the skills front but I love that plane for its out and out insane speed. It’s funny though, doing kits again and learning about the history of aviation, we really did produce some great aircraft...sometimes👍
@@chathamabs2011 Haha! Yes, we had some really great ones and some absolute flops! I've built the cutty sark on my channel too - it's not a bad kit to do, but can't say i've ever built an EE Lightning
it's worth mentioning that it is 2023 and if anyone is reading this at a different time, that deal is probably not in effect. Also not all Lidls have the same selection of kits
Nice work, I've decided to build another one of this very kit with the added paints, however I was in the build of one previously but I fluffed it up when the prop fell off and the decals ripped... mind you that was my fault as I didn't put the nib on the back of the prop and the reason the decals ripped was due to my impatience with drawing panel lines with a pencil... still, with this second one I'm letting it all settle before I move into details and so on.
As a fairly experienced modeller I bought this as a whimsy from Lidl: I was surprised just how good the moulding is compared with the ones I had as a kid. Most of the paints are OK apart from the green, which in my set which was almost solid. The camo patterns shown on the back of the box (whilst good) cannot work (the tail is completely colour mis-matched port/starboard). Decals are fantastic for this level of kit, but Airfix should provide some guidance for newbee's to allow enough time to set where an overly is required. Overall I would rate this 8/10 - but then again I'm an amour modeller.
I'm not sure I understand your comment regarding the tail camouflage being "mis-matched"? The camouflage paint schemes on WW2 spitfires is well documented and Airfix have recreated the artwork for the instructions quite faithfully to how they were in real life. If my understanding is that you are referring to the vertical tail surface and the fact that port and starboard are not mirrored or symmetrical, that is because that was how they were actually painted on the real spitfires and thus can completely work
@@ModelMinutes I had always assumed that each camouflage colour would 'wrap-around' all of the surfaces of the tail, otherwise it would mean there is straight demarcation between colours on the leading edge of the fin and the trailing edge of the rudder, which seemed improbable to me. After your reply I looked at some on-line images of spitfires and although I couldn't find any detailed pictures of the leading edges of the tail, there is a museum exhibit (Duxford I think) which reflects the Airfix painting scheme, so I'm wrong. Moral of the story...never assume! To be fair to me the overhead colour diagram doesn't seem to reflect what is inferred by the side elevations, but it is very small scale. All that said I think it's a very nice little kit.
Awesome and very clear 👍 would you recommend sealing in the weathering with another coat of matte varnish so that it doesn’t smudge over time or would painting the varnish on wipe off/ smudge the weathering because it’s wet?
Good question - not sure if further layers would harm the pastel weathering. If you dry brushed with paint it wouldn't be an issue though Something I'd have to look into
Im trying to find the best spitfire kit for a beginner, both my dad and my grandad had a spitfire as their first kit and i really do love spitfires so i may well buy this one
Airfix have just released a new Spitfire Vc beginner kit, specially designed to be easy to build. I’ll be doing an unboxing on it in the future but it does look good for a new person to the hobby
A thought I just had ref dioramas Matt. One friend bases paintings on specific actions in which the aircraft he is painting was involved. It may be a thought to make a diorama based on a similar idea? I've also seen dioramas copying photographs people have found. Just a couple of thoughts and saves having to design a diorama as some else already did :)
I'm pretty sure I used the enamel version in this build - but either version is fine. I tend to use acrylics more often these days. The reason why they are both called 135 is because they are both clear satin varnish. Many brands do the exact same colours in both enamel and acrylic variants
Kevy Elyod I don’t think so, I believe that they used series (100, 200 etc) to denote specific things. For example, squadrons In 600 series were reserve squadrons, and those in 300 were foreign nationals. Obviously there are variations here and there
Model Minutes yeah that’s very true actually, thanks for being so helpful! I really do appreciate it and it’s nice to know you care about new modellers, going into lots of detail which takes time :)
Matt, awesome video and I learnt some good tips so many thanks. I do have a question if may? What ratios would you mix Humbrol Enamel Satin Varnish 135, Matt Varnish 49 & Gloss Varnish 35 with a tamiya thinner X-20A or Vallejo airbrush thinner 71.161…. Many thanks in advance
Charles Wilcockson afterwards is best. The decals can sink into the panel lines after application, and would look better blended into the paint scheme with a wash over the top
I have compact charcoal (in a cylinder like your pastels), can this be used for a black wash for weathering? I would use it like you did, shaving some off and collecting the dust in the water to create a wash.
I'm getting this as Well as the hurricane mk. Ia for my first time trying out modelling, just a quick question, would the paints provided in one of them be able to do the two of them? As the hurricane mk ia. Isn't the starter kit version.
Adapper _Dilo I've got a review of the hurricane on my channel, it requires a black and white underside, so you'd need to get a white paint that's not included in the spitfire set. Also, If I remember correctly the nose is yellow, but it's up to you if you paint it that colour
How do I know if I have watered down a paint too much/too little? I have tried and it appears as if the paint doesn’t stick to the brush or the model very well
Model Minutes in slowly getting the hang of it! My white bit of the spitfire I’m building (it’s the N3290 GR.U one) looked very messy at the bottom with long streaks all over it however after doing some watered down layers it seems to have nearly gone away! And would you recommend I do a non-watered down later for any paint first as a primer layer and then I use watered down paint?
This was my first kit! Built more than a year ago! I tried using poly cement after the model was done as some filler...let’s say it didn’t go too well, ended up ruining one of the decals
It's quite a good kit for a first go! Yeah, i did that in my younger years, and melted a hole in the wing of a spitfire MkIX. Poly cement is a solvent though, its whole job is to melt things together lol. It's a mistake i wont repeat again :)
Hi matt, I'm a beginner modeller and I have built a few kits. I want to try out some varnishes to stop the decals from silvering. Do I apply the varnishes all over the model or just where the decals are going to be placed
It is up to you really. I normally apply a satin varnish before decals, sometimes in only the areas where they will be placed, then go back over the top with a matt finish to dull them down. Other times I will do the whole model, but this can change the final finish of the model and make it look a little less matt. It really depends on the effect you are trying to go for
Model Minutes another question if this is ok, I have some micro set and micro sol. Can these be used as well as the varnishes or is it one or the other?
@@beckypenny1957 You use micro set first to start the decal off, then you can use micro sol afterwards to make the decal soften even more. I made a video on decals in the early days of my channel: ruclips.net/video/jTBSXnFPYIA/видео.html
the heating sprue to make wires trick was some black magic shit.. blew my mind
Haha!
i was using string, this works much better!

Model Minutes yup just got to keep practising I guess :)) I’ll be sure to keep watching your most recent vids!
Hey man! I am new to this model kit world, and I wanted to thank you for such didactic and informative video! : )
I'm glad you found my videos helpful! Thanks for watching :)
Good video. Regards..
Thanks!! I'm glad you liked it - welcome back to the hobby :)
I’m not a beginner anymore but still fun to watch!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed :)
I’m replying to you while actually building that spitfire right now!
That's awesome! How're you getting on?
Nice and complete, Airfix where my first kits also a long time ago...
Thanks for watching! They were mine too :)
Loved it, yes a display (I can’t spell the correct word) would be great as yours are very good. Great video! 0:00

Thanks Bob!
You have done a great job on building and finishing this kit.....and great video, Thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it :D
Never ever modelled in my life, just bought red arrow and spitfire arrive in a day or two gonna see how I get on then might start it as a hobby
Awesome! I'd be interested to hear how you get on :)
😎 really helped me understand better just got the model.
Awesome!
Great little helping video fot those who need it!
Hopefully people will find it useful :)
For people interested about the kit . Lidl have it for 7 pounds in uk as a summer deal starting from 27 of july.
it's worth mentioning that it is 2023 and if anyone is reading this at a different time, that deal is probably not in effect. Also not all Lidls have the same selection of kits
Thanks! This was super helpful when building my kit!
Awesome! I'm glad it was useful - i'd love to see your kit when it's finished :)
Wow I just got this kit and I got it for £7.50 on sale. Neat
nice!
Nice work, I've decided to build another one of this very kit with the added paints, however I was in the build of one previously but I fluffed it up when the prop fell off and the decals ripped... mind you that was my fault as I didn't put the nib on the back of the prop and the reason the decals ripped was due to my impatience with drawing panel lines with a pencil... still, with this second one I'm letting it all settle before I move into details and so on.
sounds like you've learnt some lessons from that kit - it will only help you improve!
Amazing I watched this video two days ago then see a brand new kit of this in a charity shop for £2.50
nice!
So amazing!!! Well done!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Video of the Airfix 1/72 Corsair starter kit? Just built my first model and kinda wanna built the corsair next
Ayden O'Shaughnessy that’d be cool! But I don’t think I can get the Corsair as it seems to only be a available in the US at the moment
That's the kit i was trying to get
nice!
Great video - I admire your skill - very helpful - thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful!
great! this really helped my son out on is diorama
Glad I could help!
As a fairly experienced modeller I bought this as a whimsy from Lidl:
I was surprised just how good the moulding is compared with the ones I had as a kid.
Great video, but you made it look too easy (especially the painting of the camouflage). Some close ups would have been welcome.
Thanks. Yes, this is one of the earlier builds on my channel as a result didn't quite have the camera work that my more recent videos do
Just got one of these from Lidl, terrified in case I balls it up like when I was a child 😂
i'm sure you'll be ok, just take your time :D
Awesome and very clear 👍 would you recommend sealing in the weathering with another coat of matte varnish so that it doesn’t smudge over time or would painting the varnish on wipe off/ smudge the weathering because it’s wet?
Good question - not sure if further layers would harm the pastel weathering. If you dry brushed with paint it wouldn't be an issue though
Something I'd have to look into
@@ModelMinutes thanks for the reply
Thank you. I have one on it's way.
Awesome!
@@ModelMinutes ahh ok ill check that out i will
Looks quite nice good job 👍 👏🏽
Thanks 👍 :D
Built this tooling 3 times! Ha :D
Nice! I think i've got a number of these now :P
I was looking for that one at the raf museum
probably as these kinds of offerings are usually not the "standard" sets they have on sale these days
It looks awesome dude
thanks!
@@ModelMinutes ive posted some pics over on my channel of my latest project build hope you like it
A thought I just had ref dioramas Matt. One friend bases paintings on specific actions in which the aircraft he is painting was involved. It may be a thought to make a diorama based on a similar idea? I've also seen dioramas copying photographs people have found. Just a couple of thoughts and saves having to design a diorama as some else already did :)
Yeah, i have thought about replicating photos at some point in the future :D
I have this spitfire but it is from the dogfight double kit
Oh that's cool, up against the BF109?
Model Minutes yes but I turned the bf109 into a diorama that I am working on
Awesome!
Cool 👍
Noice
What type of pastel did you use,oil or chalk?
Pretty sure it's chalk based
Excellent video, Matt.
Please clarify something for me about the painting process - are you using acrylic varnishes as well as acrylic paints?
In this video I used an enamel varnish over acrylic paints
@@ModelMinutes Thanks for replying.
Looks like I'll need to make another 15-mile trip to my nearest model shop to buy enamel varnishes!
Can I ask is that Humbrol 135 acrylic or enamel please as they both seem to be called 135 ? Thank you, great vid 👍
I'm pretty sure I used the enamel version in this build - but either version is fine. I tend to use acrylics more often these days. The reason why they are both called 135 is because they are both clear satin varnish. Many brands do the exact same colours in both enamel and acrylic variants
@8:30 if the squadron is called 610, does that mean there where at least 610 squadrons in the raf?
Kevy Elyod I don’t think so, I believe that they used series (100, 200 etc) to denote specific things. For example, squadrons In 600 series were reserve squadrons, and those in 300 were foreign nationals. Obviously there are variations here and there
Do you water down the acrylic paint when you paint the parts on the sprue? If so, why, and if not, why not?
DriftyWingss sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. It can depend on the paint and if I’m worried about brush strokes being visible
Model Minutes ahhh thank you! Appreciate it lol and sorry for asking so many long questions, I’m just scared to make any stupid mistakes
DriftyWingss no mistakes are stupid if you learn from them ☺️
Model Minutes yeah that’s very true actually, thanks for being so helpful!
Many thanks in advance
probably 3:1 paint to thinner as a starting place, and if it is still too thick, add some more thinner
Really great video, enjoyed watching the build. I have one quick question, is the humbrol 49 matt varnish enamel or acrylic?
you can get Humbrol 49 matt varnish in both enamel and acrylic versions
Very helpful thank you!
I'm glad you found it useful! Are you building a spitfire at the moment? :)
is it best to apply the black wash to call out the panel lines before or after the decals are applied ?
Charles Wilcockson afterwards is best. The decals can sink into the panel lines after application, and would look better blended into the paint scheme with a wash over the top
Model Minutes i know im a tad late but i tend to prefer adding a wash after i apply decals but before a varnish
Mine is scheduled to arrive this month
Awesome!
@@ModelMinutes it’s been on back order for over 3 months
@@scalesmodellingmagic5883 That's a shame. You could probably had someone send it to you quicker - LIDl/ALDI had them on sale here in the UK
@@ModelMinutes yeah it’s taken a lot longer cause I’m in AU and it takes longer for certain kits to get her
@@scalesmodellingmagic5883 sad times. I've heard that it can be quite a struggle for you guys
Very nice video 👍
Thanks!
Iam thinking of getting a Mk1@@ModelMinutes
Awesome! :D
Excelente video desde chile gran trabajo a mi también me gusta los aviones y el aermodelisno 👍👍👍😎
Thanks!
Looks like the one seen in Nolan’s Dunkirk
Yes, it is very similar but i think it had different ID codes on the fuselage
I have compact charcoal (in a cylinder like your pastels), can this be used for a black wash for weathering? I would use it like you did, shaving some off and collecting the dust in the water to create a wash.
Hmm, i couldn't say - have you used it on a test piece?
Model Minutes not yet, I’m a beginner, I’ve just got all my stuff I need (your video helped so much)
@@DriftyWingss fair enough, i'm glad you found it helpful
Model Minutes any tips with common rookie mistakes? Just curious so I don’t ruin my spitfire as my first model
@@DriftyWingss Just take your time and read all the instructions - practice fitting parts before gluing them if you need to :D
what do you need to buy before you even start? any and all advise is truly appreciated
I recently uploaded a video on that topic, check my channel band you’ll see it “start modelling on a budget”
@@ModelMinutes thanks buddy
very nice job
Thanks!! :)
@@ModelMinutes Thanks!
Excellent 😊
Thanks 😊
How do I know if I have watered down a paint too much/too little? I have tried and it appears as if the paint doesn’t stick to the brush or the model very well
DriftyWingss probably too thin then. You might want to add a tiny drop of water at first to see if that’s any better
Model Minutes ill try that, thank you very much :)
DriftyWingss if you want to do a primer base layer, I’d recommend getting a cheap spray can of primer for that
This was my first kit!
Model Minutes
I just got this kit again from a friend, and it’s gonna be pretty cool to see how much I’ve improved in one year
Hey matt can you do video about airfix vintage classic sm 79 bomber
Thanks for the suggestion :D
Still waiting for my spitfire starter kit
:(
love you spitfire. btw can you do some 1/48 😁
FPV rio thanks! I’ve got a 1/48 Spitfire on the bench at the moment ☺️
Impressive you didn't use the airbrush, I used enamels as a kid, it was all the rage over here but airbrushing has caught on.
I still use enamels occasionally
Dumb question but does enamel paint smell
Yes, quite strongly in fact
@@ModelMinutes thanks for letting me know
