  • The Supermarine Spitfire Mark V was developed to address the shortcomings of the earlier mark I and II variants. Being the next mass produced version of the aircraft, it featured a number of improvements. One of these being the use of the universal C type wing, which allowed the aircraft to have the option of installing more cannons in lieu of machine guns if the mission profile dictated it.
Join me in this video as I show you how I built the brand new Airfix Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vc in 1/72 scale. This is the starter set version which comes with a number of paints, glue and a brush included. This kit is one of the first of a new range of "beginner friendly" kits designed by Airfix.
The aim of this new series of kits is to encourage new modellers into the hobby with kits that are easier to build but not sacrificing on a lot of detail.

I bought the same set 1 week ago in the Netherlands because I want to start modelbuilding again after 60 years ( I build my first kit when I was 12 years old) and this set looked perfect for starting. But I am lucky that I not started yet. Looked at the propellershaft and it had the same problem and also only the black and green paint where fine. I will go to the shop where I bought it and asked for good paint. Thank you for this very helpful video.

    Few things to say:
First of all, nicely done Matt, camera work and production was fantastic, the video was a joy to watch
That prop assembly is not just a problem with your kit. I have not built this spitfire but the new mossie from airfix in the same scale has the same system and it has the same problem on both of the props. I didn't catch what was going on so just glued the spinner to the engine nacelles as I would normally. So that is 2 kits that have the same problem now. I have noticed that airfix recently have overengineered things and creating complex, not very functional solutions to problems we don't really have.
That cockpit colour that you mixed is closer to that of the yellowy green found in USAF aircraft, the RAF ones are pale green with a slight hint of blue
That green for the camo colour is certainly off. I have painted real aircraft with what that colour should be and its not even close

When you soaked the entire decal sheet, you brought back memories of my earliest days in this hobby as I used to do the same thing back then! But I didn't have the presence of mind to actually cut the sheet after having done so - that came a bit later after I built my first Tamiya kit and talked to a friend who had been building them since he was really young (I was 11 years old at the time). Airfix's instructions for decal placement were to my mind very vague for a child to understand back in the late 1970s and early eighties. I like the look of this kit, though and how it builds up.

Nice video, thank you. I have just built this as my reintroduction to the hobby and found a few issues. Like you, I found the prop assembly a little challenging, although mine did succumb to brute force to get the pin further in. The included black paint was like tar and was not revived by the addition of thinners, I checked the black on my FW190 kit which was in the same state - Airfix to their credit, replaced both within a week. The upper grey and green paints are odd, mine are much darker than what the box suggests is correct, again I agree with you about quality control.

just built this kit myself, in part thanks to your videos getting me into the hobby after a number of years. The paints were pretty good for the most part, but the 106 was a bit clumpy (I thinned all the paints with water anyway.) The green was also a completely different colour (more of a grey-green than the pea soup colour of your set) so I would imagine Humbrol probably did something to the formula. Not sure of the age of the set but it was a 2-pack with the red arrows hawk that was on discount due to external damage so I would imagine it was a bit older. Either way, I can definitely say this video, amongst others has helped me get back into Airfix as I thoroughly enjoyed the experience (even if it was a bit fiddly.)

Bought this kit as a return to scale modelling after around 30 years (Im 38!) - Though in that time I have continued with my warhammer addiction lol. My propeller shaft was the same, but I just snipped about 5mm off the end of the rod after test fitting provided the same issue you had. Also took quite a bit of force to click into place, so maybe you have to be a bit brutal with it to slide the backing part of the shaft all the way in (thats what she said)
My paints were mostly crap too. Colour matched them with the citadel range I already had easy enough. For a beginner though having dried up paints would be pretty sad. Humbrol really need to fix them up. 30 years ago starter sets has the god awful enamel tins which weren't much better as I remember lol!

I'm just getting back into the hobby after a 40 year break. While I didn't pick up this particular kit I did choose an Airfix dogfight doubles kit that included a Spitfire, BF 109, and the building supplies. Of the 8 pots of paint in that kit 4 were dried out but salvageable and one had to be binned as it was a brick.
The fact that the kit came with the paints, brushes, and glue was the reason I chose it, as I don't have a stash of supplies yet. It was definitely annoying to then have to run to the store for additional paint.

I swung by the hobby store and picked up a small testors acrylics set with black, white, silver, blue, red, and yellow for about $5 on sale. Using that I've been mixing my own. It's worked well so far, and as a bonus I have the silver for landing gear struts and such.
Overall I'm impressed with the kit I bought. Fit has been good, the molds are crisp. Hardly needed putty at all. (Picked up a tube of Mr white putty while getting the paints)
Like you said in the video, I can see where the paints might have been off putting to a true novice. I'm just 40 years out of practice and working without many tools 😆

Hello Matt, I've been following your channel for a while and I really like it. Specially your trips to Arfix's headoffice. I built this kit in 2016, the tooling is from 2010, according to Scalemates. Surprisingly, my kit came in a plastic bag, pretty much like the old Airfix kits under the name "Project Airfix" molded in blue styrene. About the paints, I believe you could have contacted Airfix and gotten new paints. I once had a problem with the decal sheet and they sent a new one in no time, and I'm from Brazil. Great kit. Alex

As for tooling dates, my information in the video is accurate, the kit you are referring to being tooled in 2010 was the Mk1 spitfire that didn’t come with a display stand , this version is a MkVc which is a much more recent tooling as mentioned in the video

    • @ModelMinutes

Revell skill levels are misleading - they are purely based off the number of parts in a kit rather than the skill required to build it. For example, a biplane with only 30 parts might be harder to build than a jet with 100.... but the jet will have a higher skill level . . .

I just got this set yesterday. I had the exact same problem with the propeller mount. I solved this problem with brute force by hammering it in. And I didn't break it. 😅
Paints: Green paint pot had signs of seepage around lid edge and was very pasty inside. I used water to thin it out. Black was mostly fine.
Haven't opened the other two yet.
As a first time modeler in my late 30's I am still happy with this set but I did my research beforehand so I don't know how anyone would fare if they bought this on a whim. The instructions and tips are really good though. Better than Ikea.

Very useful video... the end result is very good, and I like the way you haven't messed around with weathering or shading on this one. It's a nice neat finish and you get a good feel for the model from your build and video. However would I go out and buy one for a beginner? Not if the paints are going to let it down so badly.... it's a major issue if a lot of these kits have crap paint; not everyone can walk back to a physical shop to get replacements. I'd also suggest that a couple of small bits of sandpaper in a start kit would be a cheap but useful addition, as would some sort of primer that's easy to apply before using the acrylics? Might add 50p to the cost but allow a much better finish?

Try using Tamiya extra thin (Light green top) to loosen parts that have been cemented together.
Depend on how much cement had been applied and how long the parts have been left for the cement to cure, so it isn't guaranteed to work, but most times I find it helps.

That humbrol 30 dark green appears to have far too much yellow pigment added, unless the other pigment that makes up the colour had run out/not dispensed enough to make the colour correct. As for the issues with the others, that is shocking for a kit that only hit the shops in late summer!

Revell starter sets aren't really the same as Airfix ones - they put a "normal" kit in a box with some extra paints and things. Yes, the brush, paint and glue are pretty good in comparison to the Humbrol ones in Airfix boxes, but the model kit is not specifically designed to be "beginner friendly" like the model featured in this video

my dad gave me some paints that are over 15 years old and we only threw away two. one because we couldn't get it open and the other because it ran out. to be fair they were mostly Humbrol enamels or Tamiya acrylics. the last kit gift sets/starter sets I got had one paint each that had dried up. I tried to fix the first one but accidentally turned it into a wash. by the way, in New Zealand, the only type of Humbrol paints you can get are enamels and it's hard to find thinners for them. but if you use Tamiya, the majority are acrylics. it's weird. the only acrylic products by Humbrol are rail colour(and there a very few) and the range called clear. and the gloss in that is hard to find(clear is a varnish range)
