Vids like this made me purchase my first model (an A10 warthog) that I built and used rattle can and brush paint on I just used a paper tovwel and a ton of paint for the wash
One thing that has to be remembered. What do tank crews get to do when not in combat? Well, their commanders find them jobs, like any other branch of the armed forces. “Right, you lot! The old tin can is looking scruffy, go paint it!” So while use in combat will cause scratches and chips, the paint itself may be pretty unweathered and there maybe not much rust. This is very true for tanks from the WW2 Normandy battles, the allied tanks having been fully serviced and prepared before the invasion and the German vehicles being mostly from regiments resting and rearming after service on the Eastern front. So early on in the battle, vehicles would have looked pretty pristine. Later on, after the battle if Normandy and the drive across France and the low countries, vehicles would have looked much more tired. The German crews were given gallons of Panzer yellow, brown & green to paint their own camo, which is why there are no standard patterns.
@@SvenTviking And that's why choosing the right subject to paint and weather is important. I mostly select my models based on their weathering potential. But, and I've said this countless times and will keep saying it in the future as well, I'm fully aware my chipping has nothing to do with realism and I'm perfectly okay with that. I simply enjoy the process and the results and I think that's the most important in our hobby.
No, that looks like a mass-produced cheap Chinese toy. Not being negative, but it just shows how much artistic talent is involved in realistic weathering.
Factoid: When filming the old Samurai based series, Shogun, the western set builders working with traditional Japanese set builders introduced an until then unknown and untried technique to Japanese craftsmen...weathering. Each house and room was built to the usual insane quality and spec of traditional carpentry and then the Japanese got really confused because the westerners then started to "Age" everything in a further step that at first irked them...until they finished and explained that now the buildings looked truly weathered and older. ...and thusly Japanese set builders learnt for the 1st time about making things look like they had been in place and in use for a long time which they had never ever done themselves in cinema or TV productions over there. Weathering....it's what makes things look authentic.
Martin, I noticed how well you demonstrated the chipping effects during the eleven minute segment. Even when using a "bad" technique and inferior brushes, you managed to produce a highly respectable finished piece. I guess your talent transcends your tools. Excellent job. Thanks.

I'm a 55 yr. old Modeler that has been at this for almost 50 yrs. and I STILL learn New and Awesome Techniques like this! One more I will add... I have used this to create realistic "Bare/Exposed Metal" effects by shipped paints. FIRST I apply several layers of "Stainless Steel Epoxy Spray Paint" as the "Raw Metal". Once dried, this gives an EXTREMELY Hard and Durable "Metal" Effect to apply the Main Color{s} over. Then I apply a "Chipping Agent" such as "Yellow Mustard" condiment, or Liquid Latex or Rubber Cement in the "Chipped" Areas. Once the main paint is applied rub off the Chipping Agent and you will have a realistic "Exposed Metal" look. I did this on my Darth Vader Chest and Belt Boxes and some other parts of my Screen Accurate "Darth Vader RotJ" Costume. Next, I am currently working on my Han Solo "DL-44" Blaster Prop, using a REAL Metal C96 German "Mauser" from DENIX for the main gun, with an after market Conversion kit. I have taken apart the Mauser and Stripped the Paint from all of the parts. Once the Stripping is done, I will Start the conversion. Since up to a half year passes between my models, I've watched this video at least five times now. It's always informative and funny and always a good reminder of what to do and what not. I've learned so much from Night Shift over the last three years, thank you so much for that.
"Badly painted chipping can ruin your model and take precious months off of the one, single existence you have been granted here on Earth." [shows model that looks better than any of my work] :(
✔️✔️Exactly, and its because badly painted chips ruin models, that I switched to a more direct, accurate, genuine method for creating them! For instance, many chips seen on real German tanks were caused by non-penetrating fire from allied infantry or armored vehicles. So, I realized I could best recreate that look, by taking my Jagdpanther and Tiger II models out to the local gun range and shooting them with .30-06, .50 BMG ball rounds, and some British 6pdr armor piercing rounds. But when the smoke cleared, and I walked downrange to assess the results, i learned that scale matters! It turns out that ALL of the aforementioned rounds had a significantly greater "effect" on my tiny, plastic models than they do with actual full sized armored vehicles made of very thick steel! I'm sure I'll remember to apply that lesson the next time I build a model tank! 😉
Yeah. That one looked pretty decent and realistic to my eye. I guess its his own work and he is overly critical or something but there is that one spot in there that could be better I think.
Honestly the “that’s not horrible enough “ part is something I like, I like the look of that much “sponged on” paint to make chipping and such which is what I’ll probably use from now on since I never do chipping for my kits

I've been building scale models for 40 years and I've tried every technique imaginable as well as always try to come up with and try new techniques but my reason for my comment is to simply say thank you for taking the time to share these techniques with everyone. Every time I watch one of your videos your positive attitude is very contagious un like covid that's a very bad type of contagious your positive attitude is a good type of contagious lol. I've forgotten so many of the techniques that you share and show simply because after doing this for so many years I basically run on autopilot but its 100% a great thing to have a refresher course. This is definitely one of the most informative and entertaining weathering videos I’ve seen this week, and I only got my first RC tank a week ago :) Thanks for the help
I've read loads of stuff on chipping and practised the techniques but this is the clearest and most effective tutorial I've seen on chipping. Outstanding!
I swear your videos keep me sane in the really bad Metro Manila traffic, especially when i'm heading back home from work. Also, helps me sneak time on the bench and play around with how to weather my aircraft
I'm painting models for about 10 years now. I usually browse through painting channels to laugh at the results. Your channel will be the first that I will subscribe to because you deserve it. I'm blown away. Mach weiter so.

I'm not really into armour or 1/35 models, but by coincidence I just discovered this channel packed with great skill, some dry wit and comprehensive demonstration. Your population of subscribers just increased with one.
I'm just learning how this stuff is done and it's amazing. I used to think that the sponge will do the job (yep, I have shaky hands) and have never tried a precise fine brush, but seeing how it affects the overall look of the model, I realize that mastering it is a must now =) Thank you for the explanation and motivation to improve =)
Only just seen this video great tips these lessons will help me hone me skills even more as been model building for 35years and still learning all the time 👍🏻😊

Who the heck down votes a high-quality video like this? So much great information here and the video is really well put together in terms of sharpness/focus, lighting, pacing. Great stuff - thanks for sharing!
Getting ready to learn this for the first time (I'll be practicing on a soup can) - this is one of the very best tutorials on the topic that I've found. Great camera work, terrific examples, very good explanations about why things are done (as opposed to many videos that are just "watch me" - I'm not knocking those, but they aren't always useful for beginners). And, good sense of humor. That alone is difficult in one's second language. Thanks so much for this! Definitely saved.
Well that's not huge anymore. But still a large surface to chip. When I was chipping my 1/72 O-I superheavy tank, man, that took like a month to paint all the chips.

Oh, great, I was just feeling okay about my miniatures and now all I see is an equivalence to fingerpainting. Thanks. Seriously though, they are great techniques that I will attempt to use on my tanks.
@@NightShiftScaleModels - I'm joking. I'm not a hobby model painter, I do Warhammer 40k, so I'm in the process of getting through a rough total of 120 models, of which 9 are tanks or tank sized models. I've only painted around 70 or so guys (ever), so obviously the quality and realism is not going to anywhere near what you've done, hence the finterpainting joke :D I did know about the sponge trick, but you gave me a better idea of how spartan I should be with it. By the way, I'd give my left nut to see you paint a 40k Tank or Dreadnought with your skill and knowledge. That's easily Golden Demon territory.
@@Smilomaniac You're actually not the first guy to ask for that. I think it will be worth a try in the future. Seems like there's plenty of 40K crowd amongst my subscribers.
@@NightShiftScaleModels There's a big wave of new people coming into the hobby, since they re-launched it with an easier system and they just released (like a week ago) their new contrast paints, which are a wash/acrylic mix that covers a surface in one one go and leaves the recesses darker in the same color. It sounds better than it is, but some of the paints are surprisingly good. Obviously the paints work best on organic models, not so much flat panels. The reason your chipping video blew up in views is probably from that new interest. Other channels like Miniac, Goobertown Hobbies and Ebay Miniature Rescues (and many others) have also blown up in subs. So if you happen to include 40k in the title of one of your videos, your sub count will likely also skyrocket. I know you'll only do it if you have a genuine interest, you don't seem like the kind to hunt for subscriber numbers, but it's a nice incentive all the same.
5:32 Yeah lol You have a like and a new sub 😂 I like the random comments during the video as jokes and thing. And the way you explain. Of course! Nice vid and tips. Thanks!
Brilliant video. I’m a train guy but you military modelers are the masters of weathering. I might now even buy a T34 (my favorite tank) and give military modeling a go.
This is an excellent tutorial. It's still problematic for the relative beginner like me to translate the lessons to the model - but overall it explains the method as best as it can possibly be shown. I have been making model armor since the 1970's and I'm still just beginning to learn the techniques.
Hands down the best tutorial Iv'e seen. I dont know how you rate against the Worlds best but I dont think anybody is a better teacher for the beginner or intermediate painter. I learned a lot in this video...Thank you!

Thank you again night shift
Instant hit ! Excellent information and great techniques explained clearly with just the right amount of humour - Subscribed
I have ssen a couple of your videos and your attention for detail is just amazing. I dont even do modell builds and painting but you have made a subscriber just because. Amazing to look at
My favorite detailing brush BY FAR is "The Psycho" ... such great control and precision..
This is definitely one of the most informative and entertaining weathering videos I’ve seen this week, and I only got my first RC tank a week ago :)
Thanks for the help
Wow maretu such a refined taste!!
Hello! Thanks for posting this. The idea of connecting the larger marks made by a sponge using a fine brush was a total revelation for me.
Maretu what’s this playlist?
An excellent tutorial on a very touchy subject for me but because of this I will definitely try and work on... thankyou very much.
When I'll grow up, I wanna do weathering like you
I've read loads of stuff on chipping and practised the techniques but this is the clearest and most effective tutorial I've seen on chipping. Outstanding!
Thank you!
Im a fan of those bass transitions!
Glad to hear that :D
I swear your videos keep me sane in the really bad Metro Manila traffic, especially when i'm heading back home from work. Also, helps me sneak time on the bench and play around with how to weather my aircraft
So glad to hear that! Thank you!
I didn’t even know what chipping was, but I am here.
Thanks for the recommendation RUclips!
I'm painting models for about 10 years now. I usually browse through painting channels to laugh at the results. Your channel will be the first that I will subscribe to because you deserve it. I'm blown away. Mach weiter so.
Lol, thanks a lot!
I may be one of the worst model makers in existence, and yet I can find this more interesting than action movies because it’s engaging
OMG loved this i am getting back into modelling after long time im old school an your FXs are huge transformations i did cars made them look like mini versions motor detail was skimpy at best now? OMG aftrr market motor wiring kits? interiors? so excited !! have several tanks never worked on WILL NOW !! thank you so much
Thank you Maretu very cool
I'm not really into armour or 1/35 models, but by coincidence I just discovered this channel packed with great skill, some dry wit and comprehensive demonstration. Your population of subscribers just increased with one.
I'm just learning how this stuff is done and it's amazing. I used to think that the sponge will do the job (yep, I have shaky hands) and have never tried a precise fine brush, but seeing how it affects the overall look of the model, I realize that mastering it is a must now =)
Thank you for the explanation and motivation to improve =)
I love how you do one panel the expert way, and the other panel the beginner way but still able to make it look cool
I'm building an IS-7 tank and this video is helping me a lot. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Just put your model in front of a turbine, and blow lots of sand at it at high speeds. Instant results.
Aight lemme just pull out my T U R B I N E
TheNoseph it could actually work with a hair dryer
I have a small hand held sand blaster?
Only just seen this video great tips these lessons will help me hone me skills even more as been model building for 35years and still learning all the time 👍🏻😊
Just recently found your vids. Love your techniques and am learning a lot. Thanks for sharing Martin
Glad to have you on board! Thank you!
I've been building models for over 30 years, and I must say, wow! Learned something new and exciting! I've been hooked on gunpla lately, this new way of weathering is going to look great! Thank you so much!
Thank you! I've been in the hobby "only" for about 23 years :)
Another excellent video! Best way to spend my lunch break :D
HA! I knew uploading at 6pm is the perfect time! :D
@@NightShiftScaleModels sorry but what was that tank at 1:26 ? turret lookt a little like tiger but modern
@@apocalypticsurvivor1881 it's BMP-3 with reactive armor. CLOSE ENOUGH :D

Perfect tutorial, even I'm not a beginner anymore! Gonna try it on my Jagdtiger grrr grr
Such a huge model to chip!
@@NightShiftScaleModels The Problem is...it's an 1/72 scale, but still a huge tank :0
Well that's not huge anymore. But still a large surface to chip. When I was chipping my 1/72 O-I superheavy tank, man, that took like a month to paint all the chips.
@@NightShiftScaleModels Quick update....it's a hell of a ride. Also when ur hands are doing shakii shakii and the 00 brush is afraid of the model. Hope I gonna finish it and present it as a new Vid...
@@modellbaugecko3115 Shakii shakii... love that so much I MUST say that in some chipping video :D
I am no way any kind of armour modeller but am currrently building an old ABC robot from Judge Dredd that needs to look like old dirty metal with rust etc. This video was so informative for me and I cant wait to give it a go. I am a modern fast jet modeller so I will enjoy this challenge, thanks sooooo much for your advice. I will subscribe now. Your English is PERFECT by the way.
MARETU's playlist is quite unique
Wow.. thanks, I’m working on a 3x3 feet game board, will definitely apply this to my terrain buildings.
マレツさんから来た方いらっしゃいませんか…?
The video is very useful because of the small additional suggestions here and there and because of also showing what happens when mistakes are done
That's very maretu of you
Just used your technique for rust and weathering on my 'Tamiya 1/35 Chieftan Mk5' video...Brilliant technique and really effective...Thanks for all your tutorial vids..they are so helpful to new modellers like me...Big thank you!
How thick do you have to be to dislike this video!? It's fricking awesome
Ooo. I got a big project I'm starting up and this video is going to really help me with it. Thanks for posting!
This video is the first I've seen of yours and it earned you my sub ;-).
Me too!
Thank you both and welcome!
Exactly. Subscribed not even halfway into the video ;-)
@@Krejza82 Thank you!
@@NightShiftScaleModels You're welcome. Haven't done any model in years (bike racing) yet I love to look at different techniques.
Especially the part about learning patience. I need to follow that path. Got distracted from it, for a time being.
I came across your channel and have become addicted to your work. I am a model railroader and some of my equipment will really benefit from weathering and chipping. Also, your foam carving is just eye opening. Nicely done!
"let's assume you're not very patient or your hands are very shaky"
me: *breaks down crying
*Pats on back* it's ok man you're not alone
@@shadowprince5698 thanks man, it means a lot
I'm in this picture and I don't like it.
But isn't that the way it's supposed to look? How the hell does rust know your hand shakes,it's just rust. Shake away.
@@chrisroberts7900 that's fine for rust and dirt, but when I'm trying to paint Unit numbers on a tank while I'm shaking like Michael J Fox sitting on a paint shaker, well, it gets depressing
I’ll tell you now I subscribed in the first minute. This is great. I’ve been modeling for over 35 years and your the first with both techniques and humour. Congrats.
Oh, great, I was just feeling okay about my miniatures and now all I see is an equivalence to fingerpainting. Thanks.
Seriously though, they are great techniques that I will attempt to use on my tanks.
Smilomaniac lol I feel your pain buddy ✌️
Lol guys, I think those techniques can help you in a non-painful way. This whole video was DESIGNED to make it as easy as it can get :D
@@NightShiftScaleModels - I'm joking. I'm not a hobby model painter, I do Warhammer 40k, so I'm in the process of getting through a rough total of 120 models, of which 9 are tanks or tank sized models.
I've only painted around 70 or so guys (ever), so obviously the quality and realism is not going to anywhere near what you've done, hence the finterpainting joke :D
I did know about the sponge trick, but you gave me a better idea of how spartan I should be with it.
I love how you go back in and blend the work together, very nice result
5:32 Yeah lol You have a like and a new sub 😂 I like the random comments during the video as jokes and thing. And the way you explain. Of course! Nice vid and tips. Thanks!
Well I have 0 knowledge or desire to do modeling not EVEN SURE how I got to this side of RUclips, BUT for sure the topic is absolutely fascinating.
I think Maretu is going to do things to us…
Brilliant video.
You are the bob ross of miniatures sculp/painting!!. Greetings from México.
I'm building a jagdtiger model, do you have any recommendations on what would make it look its best?
