Thanks for the great feedback, this was a rewarding video and I'm glad its helping out :)
One of the best how to i've seen so far. Thank you!
I'll second that. great stuff thank you.
I just wanted to thank you for this video, I really appreciate that you have demonstrated a number of different methods for creating some brilliant chipping effects. Great job.
Very realistic effects. Using the mixture of rust powders is a fantastic idea for a varied colour. Thanks for sharing
Very comprehensive and precise, ty
great tutorial, thanks so much for posting, on by the way: i can't find ALL THE SMALL THINGS. will you help me,please? i've noticed down below a link about, but isn't that. best regards.
To achieve the effect of the rust running down the side of the model you used an enamel base coat but I was wondering if its possible to achieve the same effect while using acrylic paints. From reading online, acrylics are the more popular paints right now so I was thinking of sticking with them rather than enamel paints. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for this. I think a couple of these techniques would be great for an upcoming project I have planned.
Very well produced video. I found it engaging and interesting to watch, and as I'd not seen the masking fluid technique used in such a method before I learned something new, which is always of great value. What it all boils down to, I suppose is personal preference; for instance, I really liked the somewhat random effect that salt chipping gave, especially when combined with the rust streaking, though admittedly that method is somewhat more messy and work intensive. Still, excellent video and I look forward to more!
Hands down the best chipping video I've ever seen. Thank you very much for this great tutorial.
Thank you very much, very useful tutorial. Also very clear description of processes.
These are all great techniques!!!
well after watching this vid I thought Id give it a try. thats the maskol one. brilliant. i couldn't be more happier with the results. Im so glad i took the time to watch then try this. Thanks for the tutorial.
Excellent video Jon :)
It's a good tutorial. Do you have tecnics to paint a sunken ship? I have a project with a submarine and i have many questions. Thank you.
Oh you're insane skilled! I'm working on a M1A2 Abrams now but it is so hard to give it a realistic look...
you taught to be a model easily rust meTHX! and ABO!
So, if I want to make a airplane rust I use salt on the body. And spar paint it. I don't know if you can cust a 1:32 scale Black Widow. ?
Thank you very much! It's very useful :D
I love the vid... I used salt quite a bit... I used a brush to apply the salt to the model, but your shaker technique looked good too... :)
hi really like the way you put together your videos and tutorials, there are many on here thats just about advertising themselves or the free products that they get,you have a real fresh approach that i really enjoy many thanks and look forward to more of your excellent work,
best regards allan
Never tried the masking fluid before. Great results you've got there, looking forward to try it out. Thanks for sharing!
Can you use the hairspray technique with the weathering powders??
Awesome, one of the best tutorials I seen on the various methods of chipping!
Hello. Can you tell me which technique you used on the panther and sherman at the beginning?
This is the best chipping tutorial on youtube, and i should know i've looked at them all lol....Big Thanks
Where is the full video...Thanks
Tank you very much. This is for me as a beginner ver usefull!!
Thank you so much for the great explanation!I have just two small questions which may be because of my bad english though. ;-)
You are using this clear plastic sheet for mixing colours quite alot. Is it something special?
In the masking section you named the rubber like thing for removing the Maskol. What name is it?
Thanks from Germany :-)
it's all new to me , thank you for the skill set and expanding my skill set..
Awesome video... THANKS!! Just subscribed to your channel =)
Why are the chips a brighter colour than the original base colour?
Whoever did it first probably noticed that lighter colour around damage on real world examples. You do see this on things like excavators, I don't know the science behind it but when the paint gets damaged it is a lighter colour. Maybe it's to do with light refraction, as often paint goes slightly darker when you gloss it and the damage would knock tjks gloss off. Either way it's a little technique that adds contrast.
@@ScaleModelMedic thanks for the reply!
You can get a tad more control with the salt by only brushing water on the areas you want chipped.
It is so nice to see an instructional video without dead space, and incessant "uh".
Very informative, thank you
Outstanding tutorial video, thank you.
Best chipping tutorial on RUclips! Thanks for sharing! Great channel!
Thank you,..............I enjoyed watching you do this weathering emensly . Beautiful to watch . As you must know , you can know the technique but still get it wrong . it also takes an artists eye. and you have both . Well done ....Ron
I think the salt technique works really nice as dirt/small stones too. It has a nice randomness in grain size. Maybe have 2 batches of salt painted with different colors before applying the water. Could this withstand the test of time?
how do you do bullet holes on 1:72 scale plane?
Brilliant vid Jon, a joy. Thanks for your efforts bud...
Putting together the various chipping techniques in one clip, is quite good, as it gives the viewer a choice depending on his or her resources, preferences, and skill level. I found the Matt Cote/thinner with pigment technique on the Humbrol video clip demonstrated on rolling stock very good. However, this ScaleModelMedic clip demonstrating the same technique on aircraft panel is even better. The salt technique, while offering less control, did demonstrate in this clip good results, yielding a combination of pin hole rust and panel rust. For myself, who uses rattle cans as a top coat, the salt technique is necessary, as the paint from a rattle can is thick, and cannot be easily removed when applied over a liquid mask (in my case, Micro Mask). To exercise better control with the salt technique, I apply water on a small section of my model, then actually grab a pinch of salt and stick it manually to the wet section with my fingers. It could get a little messy, but the end is chips more or less along the intended area. If the area looks insufficient, I would re-wet the area, and then add a few grains of salt. ScaleModelMedic, again, this is an excellent clip, and should be helpful to all. Thank you.
Very good tutorial... Thank you so much...
great job, but too bad, no French subtitles...
Will these methods work with model masters enamel paints...
Super helpful and very clearly demonstrated.
Thanks Jon, just what i needed... Superb tutorial as always.. All the best,Stay safe and well mate. :O)
Only an armor guy would demo armor weathering on an airplane part.
This is Blimmin Brilliant mate...... Thank you for taking the time to do this ..... Us Noobs really benefit from that huge wealth of experience you clearly have... Thanks again
Where can i find similar products in the united states???
Thank you! Echoing what others have said, this is the best (meaning more authentic results) chipping/rust video I've seen so far. Hugely helpful!
sO DETAIL THIS IS AWESOME MAn! thanks.
Really good effects, thanks for sharing. I'm going to try the salt technique to create some really worn, rusty oil barrels.
GREAT video. I've got a 1:24 Zero and I wanted to paint it up as a well worn kamikaze version with lots of chipping. I have the masking coat (technique #3) but I think painting in a coat of aluminium and then whatever the undercoat was and then the top coat but using the salt effect (technique 4) would produce the most realistic paint chipping effect.
Agree with other posters that mixing all the rust colours together was a brilliant idea!
Cheers for the video!
excellent job. i liked so much. i will try it very soon. good teacher.
Very very good as always! One of the bestbtutorials on chipping and rust i ve ever seen!
Hm
Removing the masking sol is not so easy in my case. It has just to strong hold.
Thank you so much! That was quite helpful. Please excuse the beginner question, but would the masking agent technique also work if I applied the pigments with white spirit instead?
Thanks for the info on multiple techniques. This is a very helpful tutorial and shows great effects.
Great video , thank you for sharing.
amazing tutorial! suscribed!
My complement to you Sir , This one is the best I have seen!; well explain, easy details. My hat to you ! congratulations. And Tank you for taking the time to produce such a good tutorial~!
Thanks I appreciate it a lot, I'm back at the bench as I write this reply quite literally filming more stuff for the channel, so the dead spell should end soon and I hope to get back to doing more stuff like this
Brilliant video that mate! Really effective!
Sure enough, Humbrol recorded video is you?
This isn't a chipping question. How to you paint the lines on canopies? I've used masking liquid to some success.
Great video as always.....
Have you tried using brasso metal polish as a way or gently wearing away the top coat. You need to seal your base coat and be very gentle but it does subtly wear away the paint and is very controllable, seen some great weathered Japanese aircraft done with it, still getting to grips though myself
Excellent video! Concise and nicely edited, yet packed full of just about everything I could want to know about the different chipping techniques, thank you! I hear tell you have discovered yet another new chipping technique as well - in terms of creating a chip off the old block, so congratulations! :) - Sim
Good techniques with amazing results are clearly and simply explained. Thank you. I was originally going to use a chipping medium for my models, but after seeing this I might use your liquid masking technique!
You are the man!!! Excellent natural voice over, excellent clear instructions. Thanks a million and all power to you!
Thanks for yet another great instructional video. I've built some awesome looking Armor with what I have learned from you.
Hi modelmedic can i ask what camera you use?
Really nice video Jon!
Ive got some of the Humbrol Maskol but have always applied it with an old brush and never been satisfied with the results. I'm really looking forward to using your method and the enamel thinners to get some cool effects.
Thanks, really glad your making videos again! :-)
Great vidéo! I’m gonna try the maskol technique soon, gives the effect I was looking for
That was an outstanding tutorial especially because of the fact you showed different techniques.
Thank you for the share
I am just picking up model building and painting as a hobby. As a novice, I am absolutely amazed by these videos. Thank you for taking the time to provide such thorough explanations of each technique.
Hell yeah! One of the best if not the best video on chipping techniques - and I know many of them because I usually have to us them once or more times a week.
Thanks for this one - keep it up!
You did a great job on this video it will help lots of people thanks for taking your time to make the video.. Thanks Brad
Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for sharing it! Excellent tutorial!
thank you! Great Video! I just want to ask, are there any effective ways to control the specific location where the salt would land?
Excellent Tutorial, you should make a full video from start to finish building a model and doing all of that.
Using the enamel binder is brilliant. That is an incredibly good idea for faster, easier AND more realistic streaking. It's the whole package!
Muchas gracias amigo, muy buenas técnicas. Las pondré en práctica.
nice work i goin to use some of idea kutgw
Amazing! I'm glad i came across your channel man! Thank's a lot! Will help me for my 1/6 dioramas!
