You can find _Revell_ kits in every toy store here in Germany too. It's probably how they got so successful, pushing their kits into every toy store, small or large, all over the country. When it comes to the model kit market here in Germany, _Revell_ has a market share of about 77% (yeah, I don't know why and how either) and like every company that absolutely dominates its niche, there is little incentive for them to improve in any way. btw _Revell_ originally was an American company founded by Lewis H. Glaser in New York City in 1943. The name comes from the French word "reveille" meaning "new beginning".
Models are so small now--and the parts so tiny and delicate--that you HAVE to be a dedicated modeller to finish one...I grew up building them in the 70's and loved it, but discovered how awful they are these days when trying to introduce them to my son...we got through about 3 before giving up...
I know it’s not models like these but try a company called cobi. They’re a polish company that makes “lego” models. The feel like actual lego. I recommend the plane models as they definitely seem the most friendly for someone just starting with their brand.
It is pronounced: Re-VELL So the accent is on the 2nd syllable. (What I mean by that is, it is not RE-vell ...accent on 1st syllable. It's Re-VEL ....accent on 2nd syllable.) Revell.
i've built several of this kit they are excellent and well detailed .... he should stick to simple wargaming kits and leave the real model kits for the real modellers as he clearly haven't a clue as Revell is a well respected brand in all serious model shops
Them saying the T-90 is the most modern tank is fair enough, the kit is from 2013. Besides it's now 2023 and the T-14 still isn't really a thing. The T-90 is still the most modern tank Russia can actually field.
but what companies are good? like all i can find is stuff that is comparable to revell. What are the companies for professional models (tanks/planes/cars)? i would really love to know, as i am currently getting into modelling for the first time and ordered me VERY cheap Revell products (basically only to mess around and try painting techniques, don't wanna ruin a good model with bad painting)
@@XpVersusVista I am not even in the slightest a pro on this, but I put together models anyway... Revell has a nice and cheap "Panzerhaubitze 2000". Italeri is quite good, except for the WoT-packages (you can assemble a WoT-Panther in an evening, and the Ferdinand was so devoid of detail I had to put a ton of spare parts on it). Hobby Boss got me frustrated with the SU-18. Trumpeter has great models, but a messed up construction manual, and sometimes the parts do not fit. Fun fact: on the WoT-Ferdinand, there where about hundred parts. The trumpeter "G.W. Tiger" had hundred parts for the engine alone
@@brandotoao Then they have shaped up in the most recent years. For 30 years i have built models, mostly planes, and not found one that not needed heavy knifesurgery or a ton of filler to get the parts to fit together. The cars and trucks I built are on the other hand very good, nicely fitting and well contructed, but boats and planes are a total mess.
In Russia, we say "Révell" and "Síria" (your first variant). Uncle Martin, you should check new Zvezda's modern AFV 1/72 models like Armata, Terminator (LoL), T-90 A and MC. They're easy to build, have much better quality and they are pretty cheap. Also check on the Scalemates site some revell's kits, some of them are reboxing of Zvezda (but not this disgusting T-90A)
I got the new zvezda t-14 aramata. It was a joy to build. All the parts fit, all in scale, great detail and cheap only £35. My only complaint would be how tricky the bar armour was to install with all the struts in the correct place. But apart from that great. Lastly as a side note is it just me or are zvezda boxes much thicker and tougher than all the other makes.
@@jacobkingsford5209 yeah, they are more robust. One more plus for zvezda. Alltough I haven't had any issue with the packageing of any manufacturer. But propably mainly because I buy my kits directly in the store and not online

I could never make models because even as a child my hands were too shaky so I got into percussion, much better fit. But I have always had a passion for model building because my grand father loved building model trains and landscapes. I can safely say this is one of the most impressive models builds I have ever seen, the details you added are beautiful.
Revell do produce some good kits, admittedly the more expensive and newer ones, but nonetheless they do, however I have never rated their tank/ACP/artillery or any of their tracked model kits. This is the first time I have watched any of your content, and I am pleased to say I really like your commentary and presentation, definitely a new recruit to your channel. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴
Airfix have found their niche by concentrating on planes since the last 10 years or so. Revell are like: "Ok, let's release some random poorly self-designed kit from time to time, and fill up our offerings with kits from ICM and Zvezda, which are much better than everything we could produce by ourselves. Ah, and don't forget to re-re-re-re-release our crap from 100 years ago forever and ever."
Emperor_Xenolius I love airfix but is it just me or are they slightly smaller than other models? Or have I been buying slightly over scaled models for years lmao
@@piker78 He's trying to suggest that those were Ukrainian tanks, and that they just painted a Z on the wreckage to make them look ruZZian. Not sure if ukraine ever had any T-90's, though. They have the T-84, their own upgraded T-72. (Which is all a T-90 is anyways)
I know what you mean. I also built a ju-88 from Revell (1/72) and it wasn't good. The cockpit had some nice detail for 1/72 but the rest was meh... Not "pure" junk but there are certainly better things to spend your money on than Revell kits
Me too! I'm almost 60 and I stopped buying Revell and Airfix as soon as there were other brands available. I forgot to include Italeri in my "Avoid" list. Never bought them either.
I’m 59 and I also learned to generally avoid Revell when I was a teenager. Having said that, I recently built one of their T-34/85s on impulse and it was OK, at least as far as assembly went. Especially compared to the Ace Centurion Mk3 which forces you to pick between having return rollers, fenders and the grossly mis-shaped, oversized and flash-laden sprocket wheels or their weird two-parts per side adhesive resistant rubber tracks; you can’t have both because there isn’t room to fit all the parts even if you cut the guide horns off the top run of the tracks. And it has instructions that are as clear as mud when it comes to working out which way round some parts are supposed to go or where they are supposed to attach.
I am pretty sure I built that Ju-88 too, it was the single worst model I have ever built. No details, extremely brittle and thick plastic and nothing actually fit together.
For me Airfix has always been The Model Kit company, despite having sampled dozens of others. For an instance of what they can do when trying very hard; the 1/48 Supermarine Walrus is hard to top :-) .
As a kid I used to love putting together these models. Back then, I was aware of Airfix and Revell and even at the young age of 6 or 7 i knew that Revell was inferior. I cant remember the reasons why but I do recall I allways used to specify Airfix over Revell when I was asked what I wanted for Xmas / Birthday.
@@flitsertheo This. Their range of reboxings is _vast,_ from current era kits from the likes of Hasegawa and Eduard, all the way to historic relics from the 70's. And the real fun thing is Revell never clearly indicates the origin of the kit on the box. They're brand with which you don't want to be buying blind.
Oh Revell, that brings back memories. Back in the early 2000's I used to build pretty much only Revell kits as they were the only ones sold by the toystore nearby. Some went together perfectly and were a lot of fun (I still have a Bf 109 and a P-51A with fond memories attached) but some were absolute monstrosities. In my experience, it was mostly the airplanes that went together well, the tanks were a pain. I honestly never cared too much about scale accuracy as they were used for playing, and I'll give them being sturdy enough to withstand a couple of months of abuse by a 10- and 12 year old. What did strike me was that when I walked into a model store last week for the first time in over a decade, they were still selling some of the exact same kits that I built back then. Just for fun I looked up the descendants of some of the old kits given to me by my grandfather all those years ago, and they still used the same tooling for their Sturmpanzer IV (1993) as the kit given to me from 1975!
I built a lot Revell 1/24 cars and trucks since the late 80s. All of the cars were really nice to build and get well together with nice molded parts. Blaming a whole campany for one tiny model kit is quite unfair. A lot good RUclips model builder liking the cars too. That's not toys for kids. I find his style quite arrogant.
I grew up with Revell models from the 60s and 70s. I think Monogram was another manufacturer, but not as available as Revell. I was young, didn’t really understand engineering quality and just went with it. Decades later, I started building them again and am thankful at all the variety available to me from anywhere in the world. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, I am nowhere near your skill level and consider you a master modeler, plus you add some comic relief included with your verbal instruction and knowledge sharing.
The sculpted putty details look great, in my opinion. I think, as a model maker and an artist on general, I tend to fall for the same trap of only seeing the tiny flaws in my work. Especially when I'm holding the thing half a millimeter from my eyeball.
revell 1/72 kits... dont get me started, if i wanted a good 1/72 scale kit id just buy one from zvezda or model collect, the model collect kits have lots of parts and nice details and zvezda kits are fun to make with neat tracks
Your attention to detail is commendable and creative! An artist with a model kit! You put something extra into what is just a basic T-90 tank kit. Cheers!
Diluted putty, with anti- Revell rant tears...😭😭🥺🤯 I've built tons of Revell kits , some are easy, some are crap. But, aren't we all modelers, sometimes we like a challenge. Revell kits can be nicely finished replicas if you put the work in. Shep Paine comes to mind. You definitely polished a turd in this video..great job!

Near my area their pretty good and my local model store has a lot of the models but you need to make sure you don’t buy lvl 1. My experience with Revell is pretty good I prefer it. My worst experience is with italeri
I've been building Revell's 1/350th Bismarck and it's a terrific kit, overall. I have swapped out some bits with 3D printed alternatives and photo-etch, but no complaints whatsoever regarding the kit. I accidentally broke off one of the propeller struts and Revell Germany sent me a replacement part at no charge -- they even comped the S&H.
Nothing wrong with newer revell kits. . Yes the old ones were awful. But they have improved alt also alot cheaper than the other brands mentioned. Here. They represent great value for money. .if you think that is the worst kit ever you have obviously never dealt with Mach2 kits. Or old frog and novo stuff. . Do People seem to expect kits to just leap out the box and assemble themselves ?? . All kits have room to improve them. That's the fun of modeling.
That kit is ancient. Not from 2013. However what I was not happy with airfix was the release of the Vulcan xh558. It was just the 80's kit produced again. However when I pre-ordered it they "forgot" to mention that and advertised it as new. Then now after I already built that thing they release a new vulcan
You do not know pain until you’ve built an Airfix Bismarck, there was a problem with nearly every part, either misaligned or had an immense amount of excess material
@@thepulle4722 Strange. I own three of those, and had no problems with the kit, rather my own lack of skill at the time. The guns were the one aspect I wanted to remedy most though, but were less objectionable than Heller's attempt at the same in 1/400.
I had to build a revell p61 for my brother’s air and space class literally the worst kit I’ve ever done barely anything fit together and all the glass parts literally all of them were probably 5mm to small
Are you talking about the 1/48th scale kit that was originally a Monogram mold from like 1970? What do you expect? The masters were carved by hand from wood.
The two worst kits I've ever encountered would be chinese and polish respectively, roughly tied for awfulness. Revell just tends to annoy me, by being in some cases sloppier* than Airfix were at their lowest point. *Parts being still caked in release agent for instance, requiring prewash in sugar soap.
I have learned as much watching you build this s***** model kit as I have in 25 years of scale model building without any outside help or advice such great tricks thank you
I still vividly remember building a revell kit with this exact track bending thing and being frustrated as hell. I was probably 11 or 12. In the end it worked out fine, but it definitely wasn't fun
i know that revell kids are not really sonsumer friendly, and yes they are mostly for kids, but i started with models from them in an age of 8 and found it pretty easy to build them. so yes i can imagine to give them to my own kid haha.
Yes. Revell kits are awful. Bad details and most of the time no clear lines so there are holes to fill and so on. Some parts don't fit at all. When you take your time you can make something decent. My first kits were from Revell, it wasn't my best experience to be honest. It was OK. But after building some good kits like flyhawk (which they don't have in any store so I have to order them from China every time) I really started to appreciate modeling as a hobby. But once I ordered a katyusha rocket launcher bm-13 from the brand PST. It was worse. Even the paint would not stick to the model (with cleaning of course). Greetings from Germany, home of Revell (seriously, these are everywhere here)
Yeah. Revell is fairly old as far as scale model companies go, so they have tons upon tons of mediocre old kits that they keep reboxing (such as their 1:48 P-51D and F4U-4). At least they're cheap.
It's, "Re-VELL", accent on, "vell", Martin. Sorry for your bad experience, it's a very old model company, merged with Monogram some years ago, and does produce many very fine quality kits, also reboxes some by other manufacturers. Please don't judge them by just the one kit.
I was just wondering what happened to Monogram! I haven't really built any model kits like this since the '80s, back then I'd build just about anything I could get my hands on, so I remember seeing a lot of models from Monogram, Revell, Airfix, Tamiya, Hasegawa, and on and on. I don't remember the majority of them being especially bad, but the Japanese kits tended to be quite a bit more fiddly, detailed, and precise. I think the one real exception that stood out as a bad model kit was this one MiG model kit that was made in Poland... that thing was a caution, an outrage, and a horror: the parts didn't fit together; the wings were warped, different sizes, and one sat higher on the fuselage than the other; something seemed to have gone wrong with the injection molding process, with the plastic not filling the mold, so the tail was just sort of incomplete, and there were bubbles in the plastic. Not to mention, the usual mold lines, seams, gaps between parts, and so on. My poor father built that one, and just spent a lot of time cussing at it, bless him. And, inevitably, the instructions were in Polish, which none of us could read, not that the kit was really that complicated to figure out. But, it was kind of a fascinating bit of the collection anyway, coming from what I guess was a small company from a country we'd never seen a model kit from before. I have some fond memories of it!
My first model was actually a Revell “level 2” F-18 some time in the early 2010s. This was back when they only had three leaves, and when you jump straight from snap together and prepainted to glue it all and get your own paint.... It honestly made me never want to try modeling again.
My dad made a T-54. I can’t remember who manufactures it, but those rubber tracks are the definition of a failure. They were too tight and we didn’t want to blow any cash on metal ones, so we stapled them to a piece of wood to stretch them out. The process took four days. Also, the turret didn’t have any vertical movement for the gun, and the whole thing is fragile AF.
Yes... now I'm trying to decide whether this guy sounds like Kermit the Frog doing an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression, or Arnold Schwarzenegger doing a Kermit the Frog impression.
I used to get revell model kits all the time when I was a kid. I had a really hard time building them and they always turned out terrible. I thought that's just how model kits are. But now I see these kits are just crap and there's actually a reason I had such a hard time with them as a kid.
I'd say the only good Revell one was an M1 Abrams one that was simpler than this T-90 kit from an American toy store. The tracks were two rubber pieces, one on each side, already connected. Can't say anything about realism since ten years old was a long time ago, but I believe it was already painted like a generic US tank
I don’t agree, it looks quite good. The newer kits do have better instructions. Revell might not be top notch but in 1/72 they are quite agreeable imho.
I know you probably won't see this, but as always I found this video, like your others, inspirational. There was a joy to seeing what you did with this kit as i would have just built it out if the box. Yes, I am a 50 year old child, what can I say!!! 😂😂 Wonderful stuff Martin, thank you.👍😉
Over here in Russia reveló is considered one of the MOST prestigious brands being more expensive than tamiya, a t34 Zvezda costs 10 dollars and a rebel costs 100
First time I've viewed your channel. Very entertaining, and fun! Thank you! As a person with very little modelling experience, I honestly thought Revell was a very good brand. So glad your honesty set me straight...
Revell is very hit and miss, they have some kits that just don't go together well but then there's some that rival Tamiya for quality. They run the entire spectrum for quality.
I always thought Revelle models where decent quality - till i got some different one, like a WW2 bomber with actual stamped metal parts and all plastic parts just fit together correctly. But the track on that tank seem to be an exception. still have an unfinished tank (started it like 10 years ago but lost interest as the part-fit was horrible ...) and there the tracks come in multiple pieces: a long section for the top and bottom, just going to the middle of the rollers, 2 shorter sections connecting the upper and lower rollers, and then several single-links for the corner-rollers them self.
I like Revell. I've never had any issues with any of their kits, they don't cost an arm like Tamiya and their after market service is pretty good. And in France they're sold in model kits stores. Not in toy stores. But I guess it depends on the country you are from
I got the M48 Patton from Revell a few years ago, and recently I decided to build it. Nothing fit together properly, everything was warped, and the small pins didn't fit in any of the guiding holes. I'm not going to buy from them again.
"Doesn't look good" ? you took a turd and turned it into a gem as much as possible, I thought Germany Revell was supposedly to turn around the low quality that Revell had digressed to, thanks for the heads up on their lack luster kits.
The thing I like about Revell is that they have some rather interesting pieces in 1:72 (Fennek for example) But yeah, are generally low quality builds...
Stuck at home with COVID, a friend brought me a kit for the Arizona. And I can't even get past step one, the hull of the ship looks great, until you try and fit them together
After moving to Iceland I decided I needed a hobby during the long dark winters and luckily the only model shop in the whole country sells Tamiya so I didn't have to contend with buying this and bought a stug IV. And due to me making the mistake of watching this channel I now need an airbrush and about 1 million króna worth of other stuff, I think I've developed a serious model addiction and it's only been 1 week... I'm gonna be poor soon
What you said about the dad thing is right. My dad showed me scale modeling by building the Airfix Panther Tank. The problem is that the tracks where of rubber and they had terrible joints. I had a hard time with my dad trying to get the thing on. We had to cut it a bit and glue it. I mean, I still enjoyed building it. Or why would I be watching these videos so that I can prepare myself for a T-14 Armata I'm about to build. But those tracks, damn them.

East Germany before the fall of the iron curtain did use MiG´s and after East germany was absorbed into the BRD their equipment went to the Bundeswehr. They might have used them for training at most but that barely counts as using.

Get a Bandai kit!! They’re incredible simple with minimal nub marks, great color separation, simple instructions, and perfectly fitting parts!

C'mon Uncle Nightshift, it's obviously pronounced Revell.

True. I am building the T15-Armata. Amazing detail in that scale. And the parts seem in scale.. unlike toeing-cables from revell for e.g. bleeeh

Airfix: You underestimate my power...
Airfix are either really nicely designed or absolutely disgusting, no in-between.

I’m 60 and I’ve avoided Revell models since I was a kid. Foolishly I bought a Ju-88 a few years ago. Pure junk. Nice work as usual.

Decades later, I started building them again and am thankful at all the variety available to me from anywhere in the world.

Revell are for Mums and Aunty's to get you for xmas . They were crap back in the 70's and still are

This got recommended to me and I have absolutely no clue what's going on... I'm still interested, though
Is it as bad as the real thing? Is there a conversion kit to turn it into a tractor? Can you install a jackinthebox spring in the turret?
Making a masterpiece out of a Revell kit separates the men from the boys 👌😂😂😂
I'm not really into building tanks myself, but I have found that their aeroplane kits are good, especially the newer ones

"Doesn't look good" ? you took a turd and turned it into a gem as much as possible, I thought Germany Revell was supposedly to turn around the low quality that Revell had digressed to, thanks for the heads up on their lack luster kits.
I can't imagine having this much patience...
I'm glad RUclips recommended this video! Awesome work and I just subbed!🤘🤘
2:18 When I heard "T-14 armata is better then T90" I laught, then I forgot this is four two years old video.
HE'S BACK!
Every Friday! 😮 Quite the night shift he's been working this last year
What you said about the dad thing is right.
Tonight on "Why is this in my recommended?"
not dissapointed tho, pretty cool stuff
Same
i don't know but i like this guy
I have a feeling its because of my WarHammer addiction
