I do a lot of work with 2-part epoxy putty sculpting in my Warhammer and Battletech hobbies. Instead of bent soda can, go get an esthetician's tool. Not sure what they're called. It's a textured metal cylinder as thick as a pen and about twice the length of your thumb. It has stiff metal loops on each side, it's used to remove blackheads and pop zits. I also use the metal picks designed for digging crab meat out of the claws. Best modelling tools I've ever handled.
I do military aircraft models myself, but I also have a love of 40k (Dreadnoughts in particular). I really like painting 40k models with the more realistic style used by military model kit makers, I think it looks so much better than the weird "Tron style" that 40k painters seem to love, i.e. neon bright and totally unrealistic highlights along edges. This model is a perfect example of the opposite approach, with dark wear areas along the edges and I think it looks amazing. I especially liked the fact some of the standard 40k features were simply deleted, rivets cut off, random armour panels filled in, etc. And referring to the Las Cannon as "some laser that looks more like a flamethrower", so painting it like a flame weapon was brilliant.
I’m painting Warhammer right now. A few weeks ago I thought about trying to do something like this. Usually lighting, colors and modifications in Warhammer are very extreme, so seeing more grounded paint schemes is a refreshing concept. Lots of vehicle painters from Warhammer backgrounds I’m sure will love this video as many want more weathered, beaten up effects on their tanks and robots.

An unexpected but welcome surprise! I've a few friends who have been directly inspired by your work on armour models and applied the techniques to warhammer models, so it's lovely to see you showing how it's done! I know I myself have found your work incredibly inspiring
3:51 protip: take some rodico, make it into a ball, slap it on your mat. Stab the work piece into the rodico (this, because it's specially formulated to not leave marks or gunk behind, usually used by watchmakers to clean parts or excess oils) so you have both of your hands free, then obtain a entomologist's needle (get a whole set of them, they're very useful - and them specifically because they're long and thick, usually made from high quality steel that's sturdy) and use it to keep the detail in place before applying the glue.
That is a fantastic Sicarian. The right sponson gun is a laser cannon, similar in battlefield role to a anti-tank gun. Its great to see a warhammer model painted realistically!
Mind-blowing work! I would love to see you try to tackle a Warhammer tank crawling through alien terrain with unusually-colored substrate, like, purple or something! It'd be cool to get your take on something weird like that!
I want to see you paint an entire army now... Tanks, Knights, Titans even Warhammer has some crazy stuff! Including tanks that are not just over 100 years but multiple centuries or even MILLENIA old if they managed to survive. In the warhammer universe there are cyborgs walking around that are older than the entire civilisation of some factions.
It was really cool to see a different approach to painting a war hammer tank, I really enjoyed hearing the reasoning behind your modifications of the kit.
I would love a "meta video" from you, discussing and showing how and in which order to use acrylic paints, lacquer paints, enamel paints, oil paints, alcohol-based paints, spray paints (from cans), inks, gouache, soft and hard pastels, and dry pigments... Especially related to models and miniatures. It feels overwhelming building this overview.
In my very humble opinion there are no rules, just very loose guidelines. For example, right now I'm applying acrylic washes over a surface painted completely with oil paints!
@@NightShiftScaleModels Thank you, that's interesting - I would appreciate even your imperfect and incomplete opinion and experiences 🙂I can appreciate how there is no 'Grand Truth' and that theory can only bring one so far without practical experience. This is brilliant, someone from a similar but slightly different part of the hobby taking what he knows into this one, so much to learn here for us Warhammer nerds.
Thank you for taking us on your journey of painting this model! I really liked the transition from the messy pin wash application and the following blend of the paint. Knowing it looks the same on your models gives me a lot of confidence!
I really appreciate the attention to realistic construction, especially with the cut marks and interpreting those big rectangles as interlocking teeth. What a great build!
Amazing. That has Siege of Terra feel. Been waiting for you to do 40k. For fun models or centerpiece army ones, that mostly sit on a shelf, I will use just about anything on the model, including oils. For the things that will see regular play it's mostly going to be acrylic in some form, some inks, and varnish. I have been painting 40k since the early 90s and have found that some things do not like going in and out of foam, being handled constantly, or just being stored by the dozen in a box(like Boyz).
"... everything fits perfectly and there are no gaps that have to be filled..." I would love to see Night Shift tackling a Forge World kit 😃👍 The end result here is fantastic; especially the cast steel turret.
As a 40k exclusive painter/modeller, I found this entire approach fascinating and there's no debating how exceptional the result looks. I definitely learnt some tricks I'm excited to bring into my 40k work! So thank you. ^_^

Yes yes YES! I have been binge watching your episodes my friend. I am so glad to see your talent put on a 40k vehicle. Now for a Gundam ;) I'd love to see a weather beaten battle damaged Gundam. But I am so happy to see a new video from you!
I've been making armor models for over 50 years and picked up a couple of the Warhammer tanks, they are a ball to assemble and paint. I was attracted to them because they reminded me of the behemoths of the First World War and some of the interwar period armor of the 20's and 30's. It's fun to depart from historical subjects, like taking your imagination for walk. Great work Night Shift, you've made a real beauty.
I've been a lifelong 40K player and this guy's modeling makes me both want to paint even harder and quit at the same time. Absolutely incredible. We need more modellers in 40K!
Woah! Awesome! Check out some of the armor from the « astra militarum » faction, as their tanks are more inspired (somewhat by historical vehicles. Could be a cool project to meet somewhere in the middle between your usual projects and the more extremely sci-fi of this Warhammer model!

I’ve always wanted to see you take a warhammer vehicle and give it the realism treatment! Love it!
Been doing Warhammer for many years. Yellow and Black is Caterpillar was a revelation that was like shovel to the face. LOL
I want to see you paint an entire army now... Tanks, Knights, Titans even
Warhammer has some crazy stuff! Including tanks that are not just over 100 years but multiple centuries or even MILLENIA old if they managed to survive.
In the warhammer universe there are cyborgs walking around that are older than the entire civilisation of some factions.
A Night Shift Knight would be next level
I would love to see what he does with a Khorne Lord of Skulls!
I very much enjoyed this video - what a splendid final model!
Potentially the Best 40k tank paint job
It was really cool to see a different approach to painting a war hammer tank, I really enjoyed hearing the reasoning behind your modifications of the kit.
15:30 A tank being 100 years old isn't that much for Warhammer - some are hitting 10 000!
The rough cut metal, welds, graphite touch... really good details.
A 100 year old tank would be like brand new in 40k. Some vehicles are thousands of years old :)
I didn't know thay i need in life a video from my favorites scale models channel with my favorite Warhammer tank
Please do more! It's just a blast
I've so often thought about doing this for years. Then uncle goes and does it!
A bunch of marines with this texturing would look awesome!!!
Your work, however, speaks for itself. Your work suggests that the guidelines you apply are good. I'd like to know more 🙂
This is brilliant, someone from a similar but slightly different part of the hobby taking what he knows into this one, so much to learn here for us Warhammer nerds.
Neeeeeeerver clickt so fast. A dream come true! Please. Please do another one.
Thank you for taking us on your journey of painting this model! I really liked the transition from the messy pin wash application and the following blend of the paint. Knowing it looks the same on your models gives me a lot of confidence!
I have been thinking about this for ages ! Thanks Martin, it's always a pleasure when you upload !
I really appreciate the attention to realistic construction, especially with the cut marks and interpreting those big rectangles as interlocking teeth. What a great build!
After many years I cannot believe it! My friends, we have done it! Mr Shift this is fantastic.
"... everything fits perfectly and there are no gaps that have to be filled..." I would love to see Night Shift tackling a Forge World kit 😃👍
The end result here is fantastic; especially the cast steel turret.
Somehow, I don't think Uncle Night Shift would go anywhere near an FW model kit, for the reasons you insinuated. 😂
As a 40k exclusive painter/modeller, I found this entire approach fascinating and there's no debating how exceptional the result looks. I definitely learnt some tricks I'm excited to bring into my 40k work! So thank you. ^_^
That is amazing!! I only paint Warhammer models, and I have been subscribed to your channel for a while now. I am always stealing your techniques, and it's your videos that convinced me to start using AK products. You really should consider entering that tank in Golden Demon. I think you have a shot at winning. Awesome video. Thank you so much for sharing with us!
You Sir, are phenomenally talented. This is the first of your videos I've seen and I'm blown away. You officially have a new fan in me.
As someone building a 30kTemplar Breatehren/Black Templar army getting tips on how to weather black and yellow tanks specifically is such a wonderful surprise
What a joy to watch someone with actual technical know-how approach a model the right way! Beautiful job accenting the slabs of armor, the welds and the flame-cut edges man!
Yes yes YES! I have been binge watching your episodes my friend. I am so glad to see your talent put on a 40k vehicle. Now for a Gundam ;) I'd love to see a weather beaten battle damaged Gundam. But I am so happy to see a new video from you!
It's always amazing how you make light plastic look like heavy metal.
Well this was something I wasn’t suspecting!
Warhammer kits are in deed fairly high quality.
**Plastic** Warhammer kits are fairly high quality.
@@markdorn8873*new* plastic Warhammer kits are high quality
I've been making armor models for over 50 years and picked up a couple of the Warhammer tanks, they are a ball to assemble and paint. I was attracted to them because they reminded me of the behemoths of the First World War and some of the interwar period armor of the 20's and 30's. It's fun to depart from historical subjects, like taking your imagination for walk. Great work Night Shift, you've made a real beauty.
Never clicked on a video faster
My god, this leaves me wanting to see more 40k projects from you. This is truly one of the best paint jobs I've seen for a 40k armour model.
Me: you can't paint gaming models to the same level as scale models. Nightshift: Hold me beer.
I've been a lifelong 40K player and this guy's modeling makes me both want to paint even harder and quit at the same time. Absolutely incredible. We need more modellers in 40K!
40K was not the crossover I was expecting.. absolutely out of the blue. AMAZING WORK 👌
Never thought I'd see Night Shift do 40k (although I always wanted it). Incredible. Enter Golden Demon sir please.
Woah! Awesome! Check out some of the armor from the « astra militarum » faction, as their tanks are more inspired (somewhat by historical vehicles. Could be a cool project to meet somewhere in the middle between your usual projects and the more extremely sci-fi of this Warhammer model!
Beautiful. The buildup of rubble in all it's little nooks and crannies is such a wonderful touch. This thing looks straight off the battlefield!
Oh my god u mad lad, u worked on a Warhammer model!!!! Not only that but my favorite tank in the entire setting too!
As someone who still has the one or other figure and vehicle to paint ... this video really intimidated me. Unbelievable what is possible and what you have made of it. All the greatest respect for your work. The Emperor would be proud of you.
So glad you've finally done a warhammer tank! Would love to see some more in the future
I would love a scenic Warhammer diorama now!
