iPad Air 2019 review: happy medium

- Apple’s new iPad Air has almost all of the features people want from a iPad Pro -- without paying Pro prices. Compared to the basic iPad, you get a better screen, a keyboard connector, and a much faster processor. But it still has a physical Touch ID home button for unlocking and a lightning port for charging. Dieter Bohn reviews the iPad Air and explains why it’s the best iPad for most people -- because it’s the happy medium.

Do you think this iPad is for you -- or would you prefer something else entirely?
I would accept it as my Younger friend. It is a great option to invest. Apple only has iPad mini and iPad in its series which are value for money. Everything else is not
Does it bend like the pro?
@@dyvel the 10.5 pro bends at its smart connector ... I think this too
They're kind of like refurbished old pros. Not sure if that's good or bad.
iPad Pro 10.5 is the perfect fit for me, especially the ProMotion and 4 speakers. But I already have iPad 2018, so I won't upgrade anytime soon.
I am all about Android, but iPads are the best tabs out there.
Facts
I cannot agree with you more. The Android tablet market was a failure from a get-go and all thanks to Google and friends.
Very true! in the market for 2 iPads right now. Have a Galaxy S10
I agree. I prefer android for phones, but I have switched phones like 4 times while my old ipad mini 2 is still going strong after 5 or so years, especially with the iOS 12 update. Something an android device can't even hope to compare. I might get a new one from this batch of ipads for the SoC.
yeah. I think so too
This is the perfect iPad for college students. The Smart Keyboard and Pencil were a game changer for me. But the Pro was always so expensive. The really hit the sweet spot here.
Not to mention you could make the new Apple Pencil compatible with the new iPad Air by getting a Lightning-to-USBC dongle and gluing a thin magnet strip to the top or side ;)
Rogeh. It all depends on what you are doing in college. For me, I’m a C# programmer and need Windows but before that I had a lot of writing classes that I used my iPad Pro for. The Apple Pencil is damn nice for writing.
@@thegeneralbenjamin9518 Which size iPad Pro did you use?
Avanith I have the 10.5 iPad Pro from 2017 and the Apple Pencil 1st generation.
Avanith that’s not how it works
"Apple thinks TypeC is a Pro feature but every Android... whatver"
Lmao
😆😆😆😆😆
$120 Android phones being very unprofessional with their Type C
@@kenbee1957 but they still got it🤷
I would speculate that the gen. 1 pencil might have a lot to do with it. Without Lightning, they would need to use gen. 2 which might mess with product differentiation for them (and probably increase cost) or redo the pencil for USB-C charging which would increase cost. On the other hand, iPhones still use Lightning as well (I don't know, perhaps EarPods played a role there).
Well apple being apple. Greedy company
This is a really good review. Would love to see an in-depth comparison between the performance of the new iPad Air and the iPad pro 10.5 tho!
ipad pro 10.5 is the same price now and it definitely worths it
Katılıyorum işlemci hariç her şeyi daha iyi
And İpad pro 10.5 has 4 speakers.
It's less actually
Agreed! Currently using that right now 😊
I Have the iPad Pro 10,5 and I pay 500 euros for it. Seeh... puede ser mejor opción que el Air 2019.
This is the ideal review! Perfectly informative and visually entertaining. Nicely done.
This one's gonna sell well but I will keep my iPad Pro 10.5 with it's "inferior" processor.
navlfc Dont underestimate the letter „X“. Moreover, the new iPad Air has less cores than the X-Series
GPU is more powerful on 10.5 pro, only the CPU is much faster on new iPad.
Yeah it's inferior to people who want the latest whatever
navlfc not inferior u still get updates than other brands still need to learn
Ens Problem is that while there’s a risk of the phone shutting down, it’s very possible that they went too overboard with the safety measure to slow down the phones more than what is needed. So using it as an excuse to incentivize people to upgrade. They should also have make people know about the issue when the cpu is slowed, and let them to choose if want performance or battery life. Which they do now after the scandal, but it’s buried in the menu options so people who are not very tech savvy don’t find it.
Finally, someone reviews the Ipad air!! Thank you
I know, all I see on YT is iPad mini reviews!
I totally agree with you.
At the moment I have the iPad Air 2 and I might just replace it with the new one at the end of the year.
I say might because the Air 2 is still quite fast and I never feel it is getting slow or outdated.
Wow, this is legitimately the best iPad Air review I’ve ever seen. He is just plain right and everything he says is relatable and clarifying.
I'm a Vet Medicine student and ever since I got this iPad Air 3, I started becoming more productive and paperless. I can study at night without going out of my bed just to open my room lights and sit on my desk to study. I can just grab it and start studying right away. I have an iPhone and taking pictures of my professor's lectures and just automatically syncs in with iCLoud just made my life even better and easier. I love .
3 Dieter videos in a week, can't really ask for more. Excellent as usual!
I’m gonna for iPad mini 2019
It’s portable & comfortable
And it has the same features which the iPad Air has
I found the iPad mini too small and ended up selling mine and buying the iPad Air instead
Yo the verge I think that the air is the best all-round choice for most people because it can do everything like video editing and studying works really well and gaming is amazing and watching too and also it is almost pro to the pro pro and not paying iPad Pro prices
ipad air: i can be used on a plane
nintendo switch: i have to stop you right there
Tbh iPads are really amazing.Verstaile as well as powerful. I use one to edit my youtube videos and they turn out to be amazing. Great job apple!

I still love my iPad air 2. It does every thing I need and keeping good overall amazing battery life. You can find good looking used iPad air 2 online, it's super easy. No need to buy those expensive new models.
Is this iPad the same size of the iPad Air 2 or biger
HI - Incredible review, thank you! Can i ask - im deciding between the new air and the pro 11 - its coming down to the pro motion or 120hz speed - in real world use with the pencil can you tell the difference? Ie for drawing?
I feel that "Air" means a lighter version of the Pros, and thus (as you said) bringing most of the premium features to a cheaper price point.
Always happy to see a new video with Dieter! Informative and entertaining as always...
Lol! Me too! What a tool!
Yess
He's definitely my favorite out of all of them.
I'm a musician, and when reading a 200 page .pdf score on my iPad, the Pro's processor makes a huge difference. Everyone doing reviews keeps saying how little the Pro adds over the basic lineup, but as a violinist, the pro features are a no-brainer.
I like how Dieter throws shade at apple very smoothly throughout the video.😂😂😂 It’s hilarious
Dieter is an asset for The Verge. I only watch the channel for his reviews.
Are there any difference in app store with comparison with mini 2019
There’s no difference between the iPad app stores (if they’re on the same iOS/iPadOS version.)
Can I use Ipad pro 10.5 case with this Ipad air2019 ?
I just bought the iPad Air and Apple Pencil so excited to set up
I miss the headphone jack on my 2018 iPad Pro.
Best Buy is selling the 2017 iPad Pro for $499 and I chose that over the new Air last week, and haven’t looked back
You can even snag them in eBay for under $400 if you don't mind used

For a little more you had the new 2019 Air with A12 processor instead of the A10x.
I have the same iPad 4 that is 5 years old. Still running strong today with the a6 chip and yes I use it just about everyday
Would you ever consider getting a refurbished pro?? I'm really on the fence
Conclusion, wait till next year to buy this year's pro cheaper
Tbh, apple just needed 3 ipads.
Mini, regular, and pro
W. What about the iPad Air 2?
That was a revolutionary iPad
Still got my air 2, have had it since 2014 and its still really good. Apple have perfected tablets and they aren’t overly expensive like their overrated phones.
As someone watching this video and replying to this comment on an iPad Air 3 I digress lol
I still have my iPad air 2. Got it the day it came out. Still running good. Though I am about to upgrade due to a lack of apple pencil support.
iPad airs are good for students. Cheaper but better.
So now that the iPad has a 10.2” screen and a keyboard connector, is the air worth it?
I’m due for an upgrade... idk if I should get this or the 10.5” iPad Pro which is slower
The iPad air "floats".. 🤣🤣 loved the timing..
As always a good informative video..👍🏽
I just got ipad pro 10.5 instead of the air. I felt the little improvements in cpu was not worth losing the quad speaker and pro motion display. I got it for the same price as the air (499).
64 GB or 256 GB ? India ?
@@SurendraYadav-gp1go I got the 64 GB version. It's a lot expensive in India. I'm getting it from US. 😅

A12 Bionic Chip , Lightning Port, Apple pencil Support
This is enough for me
The reality is no one’s gonna write any apps that would take advantage of this GPU as they would alienate a lot of old iPad users

I like the 4 speakers and Promotion.
I start to think that “Sell more 2017 Pro“ is exactly Apple want.
Maybe they want to sell off the ”old” pro 10.5 because of the white spot defect? I was ready to get the 2017 pro but read up on the common screen problem which put me off. Might get the new air instead
@@Filmbanditen Just get the apple care and dont even worry about it
I love these conversational reviews, especially Dieter's. It feels incredibly casual and intimate without losing any informational value. Very well-written and put together and definitely a vibe I hope to incorporate into my own projects.
I did an audit of my intended tasks for an iPad Pro. I discovered that I could use an iPad Air 3 for most of those activities with third party dongles. I also found magnetic sleeves and cap covers that help prevent you losing the Apple Pencil 1st gen. If you never see Pro Motion you never miss it. You don’t lose the opportunities to create and be productive using the air over the pro and the accessories to bridge the gap between the air and the pro cost less than 20% of the price difference between the base level air and pro. Look at the available third party accessories before making your decision.
I still don't know why I should choose air over 2017 iPad pro, just because of a12 processor?
*1st ipad air2019 review on youtube🤘🤘🤘*
I prefer the mini, to me the whole point of an Ipad is portability, I want an Ipad mini with the Ipad Pro design
Isn't being portable and available 24/7 an IPhone thing? Huh
You basically described an iPhone
As a university student should I buy the 2017 pro or Air ? I'm very confused
+ I never used an apple device so if there's any iOS updates will the 2017 pro be included?
So I can use the smart keyboard from the 2017 10,5 Pro for the new Air? Found one for a cheap price on eBay
Funny thing is I got the 10.5 inch for $525 on Black Friday in 2017... 🤨
I'm gonna air on the side of caution and wait another year before buying another ipad.
Made the right descision there
now there is an air 4 , worth your wait
This comment aged well.. the 2020 Air was way better.
I waited for the new ipad's but lacking 4 speakers or stereo in landscape-mode made me buy a ipad pro 2017 for a sweet price.
Sure it isn't as fast as A12 but it's fast enough to do everything fluid.
iPad Air 3 is awesome! Just got it yesterday after using iPad Air 1 for about 7 years.
I'm in love with the iPad Air 2019! I want it but don't need it 😀
This should have been dubbed the iPad 7th gen. Pro, regular, mini. It it simple.
thatgeekdad it's too good to be a regular iPad. Just iPads are, like, the entry level.
@@ilyachap I get that but when you are a company that is known, in the past, for simple and intuitive, and are now all over the place, people will go in wanting an iPad but might walk out with nothing solely with too much confusion and more questions. Even if directly talking to an Apple employee. Specs are for the nerds and geeks like myself and I am assuming you. So is laminated screens, true tone, and 120mhz refresh rate. People want to know if they are getting what fits them and are they getting a good deal for their money. Telling them this is in between the regular iPad and the pro will confuse them because they will think OK, one is for regular people and the other professionals. So what is this?
There’s already a regular iPad
people are used to “air” branding meaning thinner, lighter, and more powerful so i don’t think it’s really that confusing
Ipad pro 10.5 or ipad air 3? Air has better processor right?

Just the mini is Cheaper and Better than the air.
Mukundmarvel4 Not for people who need to lecture Screen is too small for me.
lol the only real difference is the size. $100 more for the bigger screen isn't really that much. Especially if you're someone like myself with larger hands.
Mukundmarvel4 I’m possibly getting this iPad Air 3 for drawing not going straight for the pro because I’m not sure if I’d like to draw digitally. But anyways the mini personally would be to small for me to draw on and it’s almost like a mini phone except wider (in my opinion) it’s not worth it to me I’d rather get something bigger and if I don’t like drawing I can always use the bigger iPad to watch RUclips/ft/movies/etc.
But the screen is smaller and lots of people hate small tablets so they aint for everyone
Karl’s Klangers but it’s cheap
I'm considering to get a new iPad air for educational utility, such as note taking and paper reading. Just wondering if it's really worth paying $100 more (compare to iPad 2018 128G) only for an updated screen?
How is the feel of using Apple pencil on this in compare to IPad Pro 2018 for drawing and writing? Same or sloppy or it's good but not for drawing!!
Screw that discount iPad Pro 2017. 2018 iPad is the best.
Yep, sold my iPad 2017 after a year for almost the same price and bought a used "like new" Ipad Pro 9.7''. It's so fast and it's gorgeous to draw on it.
Happy with my Air 2. Still receiving software updates, see no reason to change or upgrade. Still has brilliant performance.

Robert Norris cool how is you’re experience without cellular?(bc I am thinking buying the new air 64 gold but I can’t decide cellular or only Wifi
Super informative, thanks
DOES it supports external hardrive with the ios13 update because thats the deal breaker for me.
What makes me really sad, is that despite the vast number of current iPads, not a single one have the combination of features that I want. I want the 2nd gen Apple Pencil and USB C, but I also want the more rigid bodies of the Air/Mini.
For USB C, I simply want a single cable to charge all of my devices, from my Surface Book, to my Pixel 2, to my Nintendo Switch, to my apparently fictional iPad unicorn. The 2nd gen Apple Pencil is mostly because I don't want to have the worries that are associated with the 1st gen, as at the prices I'm paying, I don't want to have to deal with compromises. Lastly, for the rigidity aspect, as a student I cannot always be the sole actor that puts strain on my bag. Other people may hit it, knock it over, or do almost anything else on accident, as such, I want a more rigid body that can handle more abuse.
I will say though, Pro Motion and quad stereo speakers do sound appealing.
Hobbes because if Apple were to come out with an iPad like this 😂 no one in the future would want to upgrade their iPad when they do release new versions in the future
why WHY do ppl *insist* that they need USB C everywhere? and Apple Pencil ?? It would just make those iPads more expensive and that's not the point of that product line. If you want top of everything get the Pro but pay the premium price that comes with it. Not that it would bring any added benefits (smaller bezels, really?)
@@mullerstephan USB C would most definitely not increase the price. Just because Apple says that USB C is a "pro/expensive" feature does NOT mean that it actually is. Yes, it is more expensive than USB micro-B, but it is not something that would appreciably increase the cost of the iPad Air, it would simply make it much more convenient for most people to charge it, especially as we continue the march toward charging everything that doesn't have charging needs of greater than 100W with USB C. As for the Apple Pencil 2nd gen, I again seriously doubt it would increase the BOM by that much. Apple is leaving those two features on only the Pro models so that you will pay them more for the newer, better designed tech.
@@Hobbles_ I understand it is not expensive. However I don't think that USB-C is really necessary and in my opinion lightning is superior to USB-C. The target market of the iPad mini are medical, aviation and retail industry. If Apple wants to keep these customers it makes sense not to change the form factor, bezels or connector of the iPad mini. Otherwise many systems in place for the use of the iPad mini would have to be adapted or changed completely (ex point of sale, etc..)
Dieter and nilay are the best RUclips reviewers :3

they just added a key-board connector and they named it as AIR...
it’s thinner and lighter than the base level ipad which is, yaknow, the whole point beyond the air branding 🙄
The reason it has lightning and not usbC is because you need lightning to charge the 1st apple pencil.
true, but they could've also just designed it in mind with the apple pencil second gen in mind, and yes I know your comment is a year plus old
I still have my iPad Air 3rd gen and it’s still super fast! With the 1st gen Apple Pencil it’s really amazing!

Is this a re-release because this will confuse some people. I have an apple ipad air 2 from 2015.
When you dominate the market, you can charge and say whatever you want
I think they're trying to get rid of their part inventory before the foldable phone revolution kicks in
It took Apple years of stupid delays to make wireless charging happen and they couldn't even do that right by delaying their air power thing, and not making the fast charging available on other accessories for the meantime unless you use their presumably extortionatly priced unreleased wireless fast charger.
Don't hold your breath, it'll be years before crApple catch up the the rest of the industry's innovation- which is kinda insulting to apple when consider that a lesser known brand did it before them. Them again, Samsung also released truly wireless ear buds before Apple with the icon X buds still sound 100× better. Now Apple charge 200$ for basically no changes aside from the ability to wirelessly charge. Nice 😂🤦♂️.
